FInd a Way This year's program was designed with head football coach Tony Severino's phrase "find a way" in mind. These words resonate with any Rockhurst football player and carry over to other Hawklet teams, classes, and co-curricular groups. To "find a way" means putting in work in the off-season, doing whatever it takes to make yourself better, and representing Rockhurst in the best way possible. Any comments about the book can be sent to the All Sports Program team of Robbie Haden and Michael Dierks at allsports@rockhursths.edu. 9301 State Line Road, KCMO 64114 816-363-2036

The All Sports Program is put together in order to promote the 11 athletic programs under the Athletic Department. The revenue helps underwrite the costs of these programs. Special thanks to our advertisers for supporting the ROCK. Also thanks to the coaching staffs for providing much of the information. Special thanks to the incoming freshmen and families for their help in selling ads. Thanks also to designer Curran Steck ‘13, photographer Steven Austin and Raven Printing for their help in producing this year’s program.

Welcome

from the

Board Chair Capital Campaign Stats • 12 new financial aid funds have been created, adding $1 million to the endowment • 150 donors have made gifts between $1,000 and $60,000 • 1 donor gave $1.8 million through a bequest • 3 benefactors have committed more than $1 million each • 18 supporters have offered more than $100,000 each • 20 donors have pledged more than $50,000 each • 100 percent of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and staff have contributed

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I welcome you to the new and improved Rockhurst High School. On October 7, 2017, we will dedicate the Hawklets Center, a multi-purpose student and alumni facility located on the lower campus. The Hawklets Center replaces the old fieldhouse, built in 1962 when the Rock moved to its State Line location. The Hawklets Center will be home to student-athletes in Fall sports (football, soccer and cross-country) as well as Spring sports (lacrosse and track and field), and provide much-needed space for coaches and trainers. The second floor of the Hawklets Center also will be used for gatherings of students, alumni, faculty and staff. The practice field, adjacent to the Hawklets Center, is being expanded and turfed, creating greater flexibility for football, soccer, track and field and baseball practices. These improvements on the lower campus complement the concurrent projects on our upper campus, which include the construction of a Learning Commons and additional interactive classrooms. It is, indeed, an exciting time to be part of the Rockhurst community. On July 1, 2017, Rev. William T. Sheahan, SJ, began his service as Interim President of RHS, pending the arrival of David Laughlin as the school’s 17th President in July 2018. At St. Louis University High, Fr. Sheahan participated in wrestling and track, and at the Rock he has helped coach sprinters and hurdlers on the track team, in addition to serving as team chaplain for the varsity soccer team. “Jesuit education has always sought to educate and form the whole person,” says Fr. Sheahan. “Rockhurst’s accomplished athletic tradition continues to have an exceptionally important role in developing our students not only into athletes, but into conscientious, committed and caring young men. I am so grateful to all of our athletic directors, coaches, trainers, parents and alumni for their support our Jesuit mission.” With your support, we will continue to build upon the Rock, in academics, in mission, in service, and in all co-curricular activities, including athletics. Sincerely yours,

Jonathan R. Haden

Welcome

from the

President Dear Friends, Beginning in Renaissance-era Europe, the Jesuits started sponsoring schools. And recalling the athletic training that characterized Greek and Roman education, Jesuit schoolmasters insisted upon offering to students opportunities for athletic competition. Through rigorous physical training, repetitious practice of new athletic skills, as well as coaching and mentorship from wise and caring adults, student-athletes would grow in ability, confidence and maturity. More important than whether or not they received accolades for their performance, Jesuit students were taught to reflect upon the invaluable life lessons that they would take away from competition. As a Jesuit-sponsored school, Rockhurst High School provides our students with competitive sports activities for those very same reasons. We believe that athletic competition offers our students special opportunities to develop new skills, to gain confidence and to mature physically, intellectually, morally and even spiritually. Sports involvement goes a long way in forming our young men into competent, conscientious and caring “men for others.” We are especially grateful to our athletic directors, coaches, trainers and other dedicated adults who make this formation possible. We hope your visit to our campus is enjoyable and that you will let our staff know if and when we may assist you. Please join us in praying for the health and safety of all student-athletes engaged in today’s competition.

Sincerely yours,

Rev. William Sheahan, SJ

INTERIM PRESIDENT

Mission Statement Rockhurst High School serves the greater Kansas City area by educating Ignatian leaders, MEN FOR OTHERS, in the Roman Catholic, Jesuit college preparatory tradition. In the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, its goal is the formation of the whole person within a diverse and desciplined environment, as one who is open to growth, strives for academic excellence, is religious, loving and committed to justice through service.

Welcome

from the

Principal Vision Statement Rockhurst High School will be sought out and recognized for its ability to educate men-for-others. Rockhurst High School will, in the Jesuit tradition, foster lifelong friendships based on enduring principles and Ignatian values. It will be nationally and locally recognized as the best value-added education because of its success in developing community leaders for an increasingly diverse world.

Welcome to Rockhurst High School. I especially welcome our visitors and guests. Rockhurst has a strong tradition of excellence in athletics. I believe that our athletic program plays an important role in our goal of educating young men, in the Jesuit tradition, to be leaders. Athletic competition provides a means for our students to identify and develop their God-given talents. Participation in our athletic program teaches our student athletes to work hard, become part of something greater than themselves, practice good sportsmanship, and deal with success and disappointment. Being part of a team and working together creates enduring memories of life at Rockhurst; these memories will last a life time. I offer my sincere thanks to Mr. Michael Dierks, Athletic Director, his assistants, Mr. Kevin McGill and Mr. Greg Buckman, and to the coaches, managers, trainers, team physicians, parent volunteers, and statisticians. Our superb program would not be possible without the tireless dedication of these individuals. I am also grateful to Coach Dierks, Mr. Robbie Haden ‘09 and Mr. Curran Steck ‘13 for their tremendous effort in publishing this year’s edition of the All Sports Program. As an alumnus of the class of 1981, many of my memories of life at Rockhurst are of joining my classmates as we cheered for the Hawklets. I look forward to, once again, cheering on the Hawklets with students, parents, friends, alumni, past parents, and fans of Rockhurst. Thank you for your dedication to Rockhurst High School.

Sincerely yours,

Greg Harkness PRINCIPAL

rockhurst admissions Admission Information To apply for admission to Rockhurst High School, contact the Admission Office to obtain an application packet. This includes all the forms necessary for applying to Rockhurst. Once all materials are turned in, the admissions committee reviews each application to determine how Rockhurst can best serve the applicant and his family. Open House Rockhurst hosts an Open House each year to give young men in grades six through eight and their families a chance to tour the school. The Open House allows the families to see the school’s facilities and meet with current faculty and students. This year's Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, October 29, 2017. Visit Program The Visit Program is another great way for prospective eighth graders to get a sense of a typical day at Rockhurst. Each participant spends a day “shadowing” one of our freshman through his daily class schedule. Shadow visits are scheduled on most Thursdays and Fridays from October through March. Select Mondays and Wednesdays will also be available in the fall. Visitors report to the Admissions Office at 7:50 a.m. and stay until the end of the regular school day. As an added bonus, lunch is on us! Visit the admission section on our website to schedule a shadow day. Placement Test Every student who plans to enroll in any Catholic high school in either Kansas or Missouri must take a standardized placement test. The test will be administered at Rockhurst High School at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017 and Saturday, January 6, 2018. Results of the test will be used to identify potential candidates for honors classes and also help the admission committee determine summer school attendance. Financial Aid Rockhurst annually awards $2.4 million in financial assistance to its students. The financial aid awarded to students varies according to individual merit and financial circumstances. Aid awards are determined after taking into account an analysis by an independent agency of the family’s need, the applicant’s academic performance, and his enthusiasm for a Rockhurst education. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and other donors, Rockhurst awards scholarships to many of our incoming and returning students. With few exceptions, scholarship awards are based strictly upon merit and financial need. Aid eligibility requires that a family file a financial aid statement with the Director of Admission and Financial Aid, but no separate application is necessary to receive scholarships. In addition to need-based scholarships, an incoming freshman may qualify for one of four different academic scholarships based on his composite score on the high school placement test. To be eligible for either scholarship, an eight grader must have: - B+ average in his seventh and eighth grade years - Received a positive teacher’s recommendation - Taken the placement test at Rockhurst High School Academic scholarships ranging from $500 - $2,000 are awarded to incoming freshmen who achieve a composite score between the 96th and 99th percentile on the High School Placement Exam.

Sportsmanship It is the desire of Rockhurst High School that good sportsmanship be practiced by students, players, coaches and fans. Acts such as throwing items on the playing surface, participation in vulgar cheers, participation in cheers against referees, etc., will be considered offensive to RHS as they don’t teach good sportsmanship. Violators will be escorted from the game and could be banned from attending future Rockhurst activities. Please support your school in a manner that will reflect positively on both you and your school. 12

Welcome

from the

athletic director One of the missions of co-curricular school activities is to serve as an extension of the classroom. There are strong lessons to be learned in athletics. Lessons include setting and maintaining high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in our schools and our society. It is up to us to provide the direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a positive impact on our children, the leaders of tomorrow. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all coaches, players and spectators at our events. The value of the lessons learned by exhibiting good sportsmanship will last a lifetime. If we ever lose sight of that, then athletics is not worth sponsoring. The positive actions of a coach, athlete or spectator at an event can influence how our school is perceived in our own community and the communities of those schools we meet on the field of play. Sportsmanship, quite simply, translates to citizenship for our young men and women and all those involved with the interscholastic program. Through our programs young people learn and practice RESPECT ‌ respect for self and respect for others. We are asking for your support in this effort by emphasizing to your son what is expected of them at an athletic event as a competitor or spectator. After all, such events are an extension of the school day, and we should expect the same type of respectful behavior exhibited in the athletic arena as we do in the classroom. We urge you to ask your children to demonstrate self-control and self-discipline and at the same time, enjoy the games. Finally, we ask you to set a good example when in the stands at an event. It is only through these efforts that we can clearly communicate what is acceptable behavior. We hope that your positive example will help set the tone for those around you so we may all enjoy the games our athletic teams are involved in. Sportsmanship starts with you! When you purchase a ticket to an athletic event, you are given the privilege to view the action and to voice your support of our teams. We want that support to be in a positive tone. Simply put; let the coaches coach, the players play and the officials officiate. While in the stands tonight, cheer for the Hawklets and make us proud! We look forward to serving you this year and appreciate your continued support of Rockhurst athletics.

Thanks!

Michael Dierks

ROCKHURST HALL OF FAME The Rockhurst High School “Sports Hall of Fame” honors alumni, coaches, and friends who have had a major impact of the school’s athletic tradition. Given The Rock’s storied heritage of sporting excellence in the Midwest, selection to the Sports Hall means recognition among the “best of the best” in Midwestern athletic history. The Sports Hall was established in 1991 by legendary coach and athletic director, Al Davis, Jr., along with his devoted student and friend, Mike Lillis ’56. Since the Charter Class of five men was inducted, the Sports Hall has grown to 111 members, including one of the largest classes to ever be inducted this year. Honorees were determined by a Selection Committee that carefully reviews nominations by Alumni Class Captains, as well as recommendations from the public at large, before submitting a slate to Rev. Terrence Baum, SJ, president of Rockhurst High School, for his blessing. Formal induction ceremonies occur each year during the Alumni Reunion Weekend.

new hall of fame inductees Christopher Russell ‘87 Chris Russell of Rockhurst High School’s great Class of 1987 was a force on both the offensive and defensive lines in the mid80s. Chris was a key member of the 1986 State Championship team that forced five shutouts in 12 games, and allowed just 5.4 points per game total. Chris also helped anchor the 1984 squad that gave up a school-record low of 23 points in the regular season. He was a three year starter at offensive guard and defensive line, although Coach Tony Severino said that Chris was athletic enough to play fullback. A true team player, Chris was selected by his fellow Hawklets and coaches as the 1987 Edward F. Bukaty Award winner, given to the Rockhurst player who displays the greatest leadership both on and off the field.

Sean Doyle ‘99 Sean Doyle of the great Class of 1999 was a playmaker on both sides of the football who rarely left the field for Rockhurst for three years. As just a sophomore, Sean led The Rock in both tackles and interceptions out of his linebacker position. As a junior, he again led the team in tackles and also in points scored, with 103, as fullback. And of course, his senior year he led in points, as well as notching 139 tackles – still the 4th most in program history. Combined, he has the most career tackles of any Hawklet to put on the uniform. Sean was a three-time All-State selection, and his senior year won the most prestigious honor in Kansas City: the Simone Award. He was acknowledged as a top all-around football player in the city for two seasons. In the spring, he added three years of varsity baseball. Sean continued his football career at the University of Missouri, where he earned First-team All-Big 12 honors and led the conference in tackling one season.

Brandon Shelby ‘00 Brandon Shelby of the great Class of 2000 can still be found listed numerous times in the Rockhurst football record books. Brandon was a fixture on the field beginning his sophomore years as the kickoff return man. He wouldn’t leave the field for the next two years. As a junior he led Rockhurst in rushing with nearly 1100 yards and starred as a defensive back, which earned him All-State honors. Then there was Brandon’s senior season. During the 1999 season, Brandon doubled his junior year rushing output, totaling 2181 yards – the school record that still stands today. He added 31 rushing touchdowns as part of his 192 points scored that season – which is 2nd in school history, while average 9.2 yards per carry. His efforts landed the Hawklets in the State Championship game. Brandon’s historic season earned him SuperPrep All-American status, as well as the Simone Award. He would go on to a college career as a defensive back at the University of Oklahoma.

Derek Wathan ‘95 Derek Wathan of the great Class of 1995 was one of the first Rockhurst baseball all-stars after it returned to the school as a varsity sport in the late-80s. Derek was a rare four-year starter and could, and did, play everywhere on the field – until manning shortstop full-time his junior and senior seasons. In the 1995 season, Derek led the Hawklets to one of the best post-season runs in Rockhurst history, finishing with a 14-4 record. He was notorious throughout the region, earning All-Metro and All-State honors his final two seasons. As a senior, he was selected as the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, and Rockhurst head coach Scott Schriner acknowledged Derek as the best high school player he had ever seen. Derek went on to play at the University of Oklahoma before being picked in the 2nd round of the MLB Draft and enjoying a 10-year career in professional baseball, mostly in Triple-A.

Andy Metzler ‘00 Andy Metzler of the great Class of 2000 was a catalyst to Rockhurst’s domination of Missouri tennis that lasted more than a decade. During a stretch when The Rock won nine consecutive State Titles, Andy was instrumental in four of them. As a freshman, Andy played his way onto the varsity and qualified for the State Quarterfinals in doubles. As a sophomore, he tallied a 12-2 singles record and a 25-2 doubles record, ultimately finishing 2nd in State doubles. Andy worked his way to being the top Hawklet in the program as the number one singles player. His junior season ended with a 2nd place singles finish at State, before his individual Championship his senior season. He finished Rockhurst as part of four team titles. Andy signed to play tennis at the University of Kansas before transferring to the University of North Carolina to finish his collegiate career.

Paul Winkeler - Coach Paul Winkeler may not have graduated from The Rock, but he has earned his blue and white since joining the Rockhurst faculty and coaching staff in 1999. Coach Wink took over the reins of the swim & dive program in 1999 with the sport a “mystery” to him, as had zero experience. So he took what had been considered an individual sport and brought in a team mentality. And the results began to show. In his first years, Rockhurst went from 20th to 8th to 6th to 4th to 5th, before winning the school’s first swim and dive Championship, and just the second Kansas City school to ever do so. Following that first State Title in 2005, Coach Wink led his teams to 10 more consecutive championships, ending with an unprecedented 11 straight before stepping down in 2015. He was selected as the Missouri Coach of the Year seven times and produced 17 individual State Champions, along with 14 State Champion relay teams. He also coached 35 All-Americans and 29 Academic All-Americans. 23

beyond athletics... college counseling As a college preparatory high school, Rockhurst is committed to helping students discover collegiate opportunities and programs that meet one’s academic, spiritual and social needs. Each student who graduates from RHS has the ability to succeed in a college or university setting. The academic foundation instilled by our faculty is the greatest bridge afforded to our students as they make the transition into collegiate studies. Thanks to the context in which our students learn - both in the classroom and through co-curricular activities - each graduate is able to embrace new settings, relationships and disciplines through a myriad of lenses. The philosophy of the College Counseling Office is to understand and serve the specific needs of each student while enabling him to find a suitable and satisfactory match for his college experience. Through comprehensive programming, which introduces students to the world of college early in their Rockhurst experience, our students receive personal interaction and education opportunities throughout the year. Ownership of the college selection process belongs to each of the students, while we gladly assist with their exploration, application and matriculation. With over 3,200 colleges and universities in the United States, there is a suitable place for each and every graduate. RHS students attend colleges all across the national with the largest percentage concentrated in the Midwest. 15% of our 2017 graduates are attending a Jesuit college or university this fall.

Cross country

First state championship defined by will to improve each year Never settle. That has been the theme for the Rockhurst cross country team over the last decade. In 2007 Rockhurst qualified for State as a team – a celebrated feat for the program at the time. The Hawklets now expect to be at State every year (and have); and for the last six years, they have improved each season. The 2016 season marked a new milestone in the program’s growing tradition: a rest atop the State – the Hawklets raced their way to the school’s first state title. Back in 2011, the Rock team finished in 2nd place. In the following four seasons, Coach Michael Dierks ’91 and his Hawklets placed 7th, 7th, 5th, and 2nd, before earning the cherished championship. The title came in Coach Dierks’ 20th season as head coach. “Being the first Rockhurst team to win the State Championship represents every single runner that’s been willing to put on the singlet,” said Coach Dierks. “We can’t thank them enough for being the building blocks for this success.” Coming off of that 2nd place finish in 2015, the cross country team sensed that it could

be a championship contender. The Hawklets would return their top two runners from the State meet – John Luder ’17 and Danny Toomey ’17. “We knew there might be something special there for our senior year,” said Luder. “And then all the hard work we put in when no one was watching finally paid off.” The season, though, was not all smooth sailing. The Hawklets had to battle injuries throughout the year. This required runners outside of the top five or

As a runner at the University of Notre Dame, Coach Dierks has brought a strong pack running philosophy to the program. He is also in his fifth year as the school’s athletic director.

Team’s ability to win in any fashion leads to Final Four berth The 2016 Rockhurst football team entered the season with a bad taste in its mouth following a 4-6 record the year before. The senior class made a decision after that 2015 season: leave the Rock Football program on a high note with a strong showing. “After that 4-6 record our junior year, our class of seniors wanted to leave a better legacy,” said 1st Team All-State defensive back Ross Elder ’17. “About fifteen of us were on the 2014 team that went to State and we saw what it took to get there. I think our success during the season really paid tribute to the work we put in during the offseason. And once the games started, we always seemed to find a way to win.” Powered by a hard-nosed defense and a versatile offense – often anchored by Chance May ’17 as quarterback and linebacker – they did just that. Finishing with a 9-3 record and a spot in the State Final Four, Rockhurst brought a high-energy performance each Friday night. The stingy defense allowed less than 13 points per game, while the offense nearly doubled that number.

A big part of each season is trying to build momentum in the opening games, and the Hawklets came out ahead in some close matchups. Following a week one blowout win over Columbia Rock Bridge, the team buckled down for a defensive struggle at Blue Springs South, in which The Rock hung on for a 14-7 victory. Coach Tony Severino’s squad then headed south to face Arkansas powerhouse Bentonville, an annual battle since 2012, and managed to pull

Receiving an athletic scholarship to Kansas State University, he completed his undergraduate while playing football there and later earned his Master’s at University of Kansas. He is married (Marilyn), with three sons - all Rockhurst High graduates. Coach Sev teaches Lifetime Sports, a student favorite. He feels that Rockhurst athletic histories impact the school’s traditions because of the pride everyone feels when they are successful; they never want to let down those who preceded them. 52

He suffered a heart attack and died while watching his son Joe play in the 1952 Lillis/ Rockhurst football game. Every season since the Bukaty Award was established, a senior is selected by the football coaches and players as the recipient of this prestigious honor. The criteria, set by Mr. Alex George and former head football coach Mr. Al Davis, is to honor the individual player displaying the greatest leadership both on and off the field. The award criteria also state that the individual should lead by example and should have the respect of both players and coaches. Since that time, 64 young men, including Joe Bukaty, have been selected for this special honor. Football All-Time Team In 1970, Rockhurst and DeLaSalle played their 50th and final football game. A select committee from each school named an All-Time Football Team. Twenty years later, during the celebration of Rockhurst’s 75th year of football, the All-Time Team was updated. Rockhurst coaches have reviewed the many years of football teams and individual players and then honored additional players, naming them to the AllTime Hawklet squad yearly with the school criteria of having graduated five years out.

A top team in the nation, Hawklets fall short in penalty kicks Another year, another deep run in the State Tournament for the Rockhurst Soccer Hawklets. It’s much easier said than done, but The Rock somehow manages to play its way into the Final Four seemingly every year. It seems that way because the program has reached the Final Four in all but three seasons since 1998. These runs all have one thing in common: Head Coach Chris Lawson at the helm. He is currently in his 24th year as coach. “Our program philosophy focuses on player and team development, chemistry, buying into roles, using our strength of schedule, analyzing game video to build upon strengths, while recognizing areas individually and collectively we need to improve upon,” said Coach Lawson. “Getting to the Final Four and having the chance to compete for a title is the by-product of the development process we’ve had in place.” The 2016 season was no exception. Following a regular season that notched 21 wins versus just four losses, the Hawklets won their first four playoff games, including three shutouts, to land themselves in the coveted Final Four.

But the regular season should not be overlooked. The team fired off 11 straight wins to start the season, and by mid-September was the number one ranked team in the country, according to USA Today. During that stretch, the defense allowed just three goals and also won the Blue Valley Northwest “Top Dawg” Tournament. Game 12 on the season was a nationally-recognized matchup. The Hawklets faced Marquette University High School in the annual Jesuit Classic.

A three-sport athlete at Sacred Heart High in Sedalia, Coach Lawson decided to focus on soccer after high school. He went on to play goalie at State Fair Community College and Park University. Now in his 24th year heading Rockhurst soccer and 23rd as a Social Studies teacher, he has two sons - Mel (class of ‘09) and Owen, (class of 2020). One of his favorite coaching memories was seeing Owen dog pile with the players after winning the ‘07 and ‘08 state titles. He believes that very few schools have attained the type of traditions that Rockhurst has and holds in academics, co-curriculars and spiritual retreats consistently on a state or national level. Coach Lawson teachers Senior American Government and is the Social Studies department chairperson.

Soccer All-Time Team While our soccer program has been quite successful since its days beginning in the winter, the All-Time Team is a recent addition to recognize individual players who were hallmark players and instrumental to the success of the program in their eras. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school soccer career warrants consideration. The player must be five years out from graduation. Congratulations to these important players and thanks for your talents, toughness, tactical skill, and much more. Assistant coaches Scott Huber Coach Huber is the coach of the freshman squad. After stepping in last season to coach a second freshman team due to the large numbers of students who came out to play, he has now transitioned to the head coach of the only freshman team this season. He is a past parent and has plenty of experience coaching club soccer. Coach Huber is energetic, organized and passionate about teaching and coaching so it is a great fit.

Seth Sinovic The name should be familiar as Seth Sinovic is a local celebrity in the soccer community. He is a Rockhurst alum who worked his way from being a standout high school player all the way to being on the roster for Sporting KC. Coach Sinovic played collegiately at Creighton and not only does he understand what it takes to play at the most competitive levels, he is a great ambassador of the game. A graduate of the Great Class of 2005, Coach Sinovic has spoken to the team and summer campers and is throwing his hat in the ring on the coaching side and we are excited that he asked to come back to his alma mater las season.

Brian Dugan Coach Dugan is spending the 2017-18 year volunteering in the Alumni Service Corps (ASC) at Rockhurst. He is a graduate of St. Louis University High School, and then St. Louis University this past spring. While at SLUH, he was part of the soccer program for two years. Now at The Rock, Coach Dugan will teach two sections of Sophomore Scripture and assist with the soccer and baseball programs, along with working with Rockhurst’s Hurtado Scholars.

Bryan Jantsch Coach Jantsch (RHS ‘10) is welcomed back to the Rockhurst soccer program as a volunteer assistant coach. He was part of RHS State Championships in 2007 and 2008. Individually, he was All-State his senior season and is a member of the All-Time Team. He went on to be 2nd Team All-Conference at Drake University. Now working as a medical device sales rep, Coach Jantsch is finding a niche in coaching, having also served as an assistant coach for St. Teresa’s in the spring.

Mike Wickenhauser In his 18th year as assistant varsity coach, Coach Wickenhauser is a former Jesuit high school player at DeSmet in St. Louis. Following college education at Northwestern University and Webster University, he joined Rockhurst as part of the Alumni Service Corp. Coach Wick is currently a candidate for his PhD at the University of Kansas. He teaches both sophomore and senior English courses and the department’s chair. He is married with a daughter, Ava and a son, Joseph. Coach Wick believes that Rockhurst’s tradtiton plays a role in each and every match they play.

Dirk Lawson The name Coach Lawson might sound familiar as he is the head coach’s younger brother but this is Coach Dirk Lawson’s first year as the JV coach. He previously coached youth soccer for 20 years. Coach Lawson was a four-year letterman and 2-time allstate selection at Sacred Heart High School in Sedalia, Mo. He played collegiately at Park Univ. and then went on to get his law degree at Boston University. Working as a financial advisor, he is married to his wife Aimee and they have three children; Grey ‘19, Grace and Carver.

Dan Salzman Returning to the staff for his 7th year Coach Dan Salzman graduated from Rockhurst High School in 2005. While at Rockhurst, Coach Salzman played soccer for four years and ran track for two years. He went to Missouri University of Science and Technology, where he played all four years on the Men’s Soccer team. Aquahawks committed to improving, despite programs growing throughout State Practices at 5:00 a.m., two-a-days, outside conditioning, pool length after pool length of laps. It sounds rigorous. And it is. But this is the dedication it takes to build a State Championship-caliber swim and dive team. This is especially true when other schools in the area, and throughout the State, begin to grow their swim and dive programs like Rockhurst did in the early-2000s. “Swim and dive continues to grow as a sport,” said Head Coach Bob Barth. “A few years ago there were only three club teams in all of Kansas City. Now there are eight.” The same growth seems to be throughout the state, and competition has stiffened. In the last two seasons, eight different teams have placed in the top-five at State; evidence that more and more teams are competing for top honors every year. In order to have a shot at the title, a team needs to qualify as many swimmers and divers as possible during the regular season, and then have them peak during State competition. Coach Barth focuses on a longer taper for his swim-

mers. This means that the swimmers lower the number of yards they swim per week as the season goes on, with the goal of preparing them for a big meet – namely, the State Championship. And the Aquahawks qualified a solid number of individuals for State, with 17 swimmers and divers earning spots to compete. The collection of Rock athletes rallied together for 95 points, good for a 9th place finish. A core of 2017 seniors such as Collin Nill,

Coach Barth began his high school coaching career in Indiana but he eventually found his way to the Northland. He spent the next 12 years coaching in the North Kansas City School District, and in 2011, was instrumental in creating Club North Swimming, which has continued to provide an outstanding competitive swimming experience for kids all over the Northland. He holds a BS in Education, a Master’s degree in Human Performance, and is an ASCA Level III coach. He has two children: Samuel & Suzanne. 116

swim & dive The Rockhurst Swim & Dive program recognizes many different levels in their team awards. Self evident in the purpose are the following: Rookie of the year, Diver of the Year, MVP, Team Spirit, Leadership, Most Improved, JV Swimmer of the Year. The Aquahawk Award of Excellence is the only award soley voted on by the swimmers and recognizes the person who represents the program best. The Ironman Award is given to someone who had to really push himself to achieve something special. The Award of Perseverance & Determination is similar but more focused on overcoming setbacks in a career.

Athleticism carries Hawklets, gain valuable experience for new season High school basketball has just as much to do with attitude and effort as it does with talent. And that is the philosophy of Head Coach Pete Campbell ’89. He notes that the difference between a “good” program and a “great” program is the ability of the team to play as one unit and be successful on both sides of the ball. The 2016-17 basketball season featured a good team that was just unable to get over the hump and become a great team, as this Rockhurst team finished with a 13-14 record. The Hawklets came up just short in a few games that dictated the season. The Rock could not get the offense going in the annual rivalry game against Shawnee Mission East, which ended in a 54-49 defeat. And after a blowout win over Ruskin in the first round of Districts, Rockhurst suffered a last-second loss to top-seeded Raytown that ended the team’s year. Highlights on the season included a 2nd place finish in the Blue Springs South Tournament that featured a 6362 nail-biter win against Fort Smith Northside (AR) and an overtime victory over host

school Blue Springs South. In that tournament, Rockhurst’s top two players all year, Chris Teahan ’17 and Xavier Rhodes ’18 were named to the All-Tournament Team. The duo was also selected as members of the 2017 All-District Team. The 6’7” versatile Teahan led the squad in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.4 points and 5.5 boards per contest. Rhodes, a speedy guard, added 13.7 points and more than four assists on

head coach pete campbell Coach Campbell begins his fifth year as head coach after 18 years as an assistant. A Rockhurst grad (class of `89), he helped bring home a basketball state title in 1989; a feat made possible in part due to his game winning shot to make it out of the quarterfinals, and also in 2013 when he was the varsity assistant coach for the state championship team. He went on to get his BA from Mizzou and MA at Baker. He is married with three kids: Catelyn, and twins Emma and Will. Coach Campbell served as the athletic director for 6 years but has returned to the classroom and teaches freshman math. Without coaching or teaching, Coach Campbell says he would be broke - he can’t do anything else. 134

All-American brothers graduate, leave program excited for new leaders The Rockhurst wrestling program will look for new Hawklets to step up and undertake the role as team leaders, both on and off the mat. The team will need to fill that void, which was left by the graduation of twin brothers Cameron and Colin Valdiviez ’17 – the two most accomplished wrestlers in Rockhurst history. The twins combined for eight State qualifications, more than 300 wins, more than 200 pins, and three individual state championships. They were also selected by their teammates as team captains for their senior seasons. “Without doubt, we are a better program by having two outstanding role models in Cameron and Colin Valdiviez. They raised the bar by showing the effort and lifestyle commitment it takes to be a State Champion and earn All-American honors,” said Head Coach Armand Aaron. “Hopefully our younger wrestlers were paying attention and realize that being a champion is attainable.” During the 2016-17 season, Cameron and Colin were on a mission to both

repeat as state champs in their respective weight classes, following individual titles in February 2016. They both worked their way to the State Finals, and Cameron won the 126-pound division, while Colin lost in a close match in the 132-pound division. They finished their seasons with records of 45-2 and 49-1 records, respectively. “Wrestling for the Hawklets was a great physical and intellectual learning experience for me,” said Cameron. “At the beginning of my high school

Season of streaks ends in Districts, returnees ready for a post-season run Baseball is a mental sport. Whether it’s the major league, high school, or youth league, baseball comes down to moving on to the next pitch, inning, and game. The mental fortitude of the Hawklet baseball team was tested in 2017, as they played through two winning streaks, a losing streak, big wins, and tight losses. The season started off as well as possible, with Rockhurst winning all five games in the Metro Lead-off Classic, hosted by Liberty. The tournament champions beat Liberty North in extra innings, won close games over Blue Springs and Oak Park, and handily beat Park Hill and Liberty. “Coming into the season and winning the first five game was huge for our guys,” said Head Coach Jim DeGraw. “It set the tone that we planned on being a tough team all season.” The middle of the season featured notable wins over Shawnee Mission East, Bishop Miege, and a doubleheader win at Creighton Prep in Omaha. The regular season did not end ideally, as the Hawklets went on a seven-game slide just before Districts. After a 15-13 regular sea-

son, The Rock put behind any recollection of a losing streak and focused on the game ahead: Ray-Pec. Early in the season, Rockhurst faced Ray-Pec and was handed its worst loss of the season, by a score of 14-2. The Hawklets avenged that loss by beating Ray-Pec 5-3 and knocking the Panthers out of the playoffs. “That’s just baseball,” said Coach DeGraw. “You can get beat up on one day, and turn around the next day and get them right back. And our

In the spring of 2018 Jim DeGraw will begin his 27th season as the head baseball coach at Rockhurst High School. He has led Rockhurst to its only two state final four appearances in 2004 (state runner-up) and 2010 (third place) and an overall record of 349 wins and 176 losses. Coach DeGraw has coached 27 players who have gone to play Division I baseball and five who have played professionally including former first team high school All-American and current major leaguer John Mayberry, Jr. (Mets). There have been 26 all-state players that have played under Coach DeGraw. Rockhurst has been ranked as the number one team in the state of Missouri during the course of five different seasons during his tenure and is a regular in the state’s top ten rankings during the spring. Since baseball returned to Rockhurst in 1989, teams have won 12 district titles. Under DeGraw, Rockhurst has made the national rankings as well, appearing in the USA Today Top 25 (#24), Baseball America Top 25 poll (#21) and the Midlands Region Top 5 (#2) in 2004.

Baseball All-Time Team With several Major League Baseball players in the program’s history it wasn’t too hard to begin an All-Time team for baseball (in 2009). The gap between 1960s and the late 1980s is because there was no program sponsored by the high school. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school baseball career warrants consideration. Consistency in playoffs leads to 14th state championship The magic number for the Rockhurst golf team: 305. The team score comes from the number of strokes in a round by the top four out of five team players. For the Hawklets, 305 earned them District, Sectional, and State Championships. Outplaying the field on the second and final day at State led to Rockhurst winning its 14th State title in program history, and the first since 2012. After the first day, the Hawklets found themselves in 2nd place, trailing Glendale by five strokes as the Falcons shot 300 and The Rock shot 305. Despite windy conditions, the Rockhurst team of Patrick Bessenbacher ’20, Rob Enright ’17, Ethan Packel ’17, Jake Propeck ’18, and Carson St. Clair ’18, battled back to shoot yet another 305, while Glendale slipped to a 313 on the day. The Hawklets were back on top after back-toback 2nd place finishes in 2015 and 2016. “We all knew that we had to play our best every round, and it just somehow managed to always end up with 305 at the top of the scoreboard,” said Propeck. “When we realized that we had shot

305 again on the second day of State, we were just simply amazed.” Individually, Propeck tied for 2nd, Enright tied for 5th, St. Clair tied for 15th, Bessenbacher tired for 30th, and Packel tied for 36th. The top three Hawklets each earned All-State honors. A strong regular season helped boost the team’s experience and confidence going into post-season play. Senior-laden squad refuses to lose, Hawklets back as LAKC Champions During the lacrosse season, Head Coach Tim Reidy ’02 schedules a handful of outof-town matchups. Of course, the Hawklets would like to win every game they play, but Coach Reidy intentionally pits his team against strong competition to ready them for the main goal: win the LAKC League Championship. In 2017, that goal was completed, as the Hawklets won the league title for the first time since 2014. A key to the success was again playing teams from outside of the area. After a 6-0 start against Kansas City opponents, the Hawklets traveled to St. Louis to square off against three of the top programs across the state. In a two-day span, The Rock fell to DeSmet 13-8, beat Chaminade 14-5, and lost to St. Louis University High 158. All three teams would go on to play in the Final Four of the Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association. “My college coach use to always say that in order to be the best, you have to play the best,” said Coach Reidy. “So as a program, we always try to take a regional or national trip each season to compete

against some of the best teams that area has to offer.” The Hawklets then returned home for another stretch of games against fellow LAKC teams. Over those four games, Rockhurst tallied 67 goals and allowed just 22. They moved to 10-0 in league play. Coach Reidy’s team again hit the road and traveled to Georgia for three more games against stiff competition. The Hawklets would lose all three to Marist High School, Johns Creek,

and Wesleyan School, but again gained that lead diminished in the 4th and East tied valuable tough-play experience heading into the game with six minutes left. the final stretch of the season. Rivalry with Rock Bridge continues as team earns another top-three finish For the 23rd consecutive year, the Rockhurst tennis team put itself in the position to earn a State Championship plaque. Every spring since 1995 has included a Hawklet team in the Final Four of Missouri Class 2 tennis, the largest class. All but one of those years has resulted in a top-three finish. The 2017 team finished the season in 3rd place, as they were knocked into the consolation bracket in the semifinals by Columbia Rock Bridge, which would go on to win its second straight title. “The rivalry with Rock Bridge is real,” said Graham Colombo ‘18. “It seems like we play them every year at State.” And for the last decade, they have. The two schools have faced off in the semifinals or finals every year since 2008. The 2017 matchup went in favor of the Bruins. Following that semifinal loss to Rock Bridge, the Hawklet team regrouped and focused in on hanging another banner in the gym at Rockhurst – an honor reserved for teams that finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd at State. A dominant 5-0 victory over Parkway Central ensured that

the 2017 team would be enshrined on the walls of the Loyola Center. Major assets to the bronze medal team included the doubles tandem of Henry Goeke ’17 and Collin Klumb ’18, which made a run to the semifinals in the doubles tournament. Donovan Walsh ’19 was a top singles player who played his way into the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. TRACK & FIELD

Team works through unseen hurdles, celebrates two All-State performances Track and field Head Coach Michael Day ’01 starts every season by telling his athletes that he loves the sport because it is the most pure form of athleticism. It is about who can run the fastest, jump the highest or furthest, and throw the furthest. It would seem like a sport that has little to do with luck – but that’s not always the case. According to Coach Day, injuries and the random “bad races” are products of bad luck. The Hawklets did their best to push through a bit of both during the team’s 2017 campaign. Two senior sprinters that had been on the State Series team in 2016, Navardo Bailey and DeWayne Bright, missed crucial training weeks in the season due to nagging foot and knee injuries. This affected their ability to be in top form for the postseason meets. Senior distance runner Branden Schaff also had his season cut short due to injury. Another bit of bad luck came from District and Sectional realignments. For the 2017, both groupings were realigned by the Missouri State High School

Activities Association (MSHSAA), and suddenly Rockhurst was placed in perhaps the toughest District in Missouri. It would be a District with three teams that would go on to place in the top-10 at the State Championships. “Of course you want to be able to have the best shot at getting through to State, but you can only worry about the things you are able to control,” said Tom Seitzer ’19, a top middle and long distance runner. “And what we were able

Coach Day will coach his 10th season in track, 5th as head coach and he is in charge of the sprint events. He coached the school’s 4X100 relay team to win it’s third straight state championship. He gave up his head coaching job in 2012 yet still assists with the middle distance runners. He has coached numerous all-state athletes and overseen an increase in participation over the years. Coach Dierks focuses on training the athlete’s mechanics and stength and stamina. He has worked with many talented assistants to help the program compete at a local and state level.
