kids Children's Book Week Celebrate Children’s Book Week activities from 17 – 23 August with the theme Reading is my Secret Power.

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. Join in a special Children's Book Week event at the Gracemere Library on Thursday 22 August featuring favourite stories, both old and new!

10.00am - 10.30am | Gracemere Library | All welcome Superheroes of all ages are invited to join the Dads Read storytime session at the Southside Library on Saturday 24 August starting at 10.00am. Wear your superhero cape or cufflets and ‘fly’ to the library for some Book Week fun!

Create a Picture Book Competition 2019 Have you ever wanted to be a children's author? Does your child have the most amazing stories to tell? Now is your chance to turn imagination into reality by creating a children’s book suitable for a child aged under 5 years, and entering Rockhampton Regional Libraries' Picture Book Competition. You are only limited by your imagination!

All ages are encouraged to participate in the competition, with some great prizes to be won. Entries are open to all Rockhampton Regional Library members, with submission open from Monday 5 August 2019.

Collect an entry form from your local library and get writing!

Sydney based children’s author Jacqueline Harvey speaks to thousands of young people at schools and festivals around the world inspiring a love of reading and writing. She is the author of the popular Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose series, which have sold over one million copies in Australia alone. Her books have received numerous short-listings and awards. Ever since she was a little girl she has loved to tell stories and thinks she might have made a pretty good spy too and is currently writing a new series, Kensy and Max which is all about espionage and undercover adventures.

The first book in the series, Painted Dogs & Doom Cakes, was awarded Honour Book at the 2017 KOALAs. Masterclass of Revolting Writing with Mark Svendsen Well-loved author and poet Mark Svendsen loves to ‘see the light go on’ in kids’ eyes, particularly when they ‘get’ literary devices and descriptive language. He believes that through age-appropriate challenges, students can discover for themselves how their own simple self-directed effort can make the ordinary shine. Mark’s works of poetry, picture books, junior fiction and young adult fiction, are published by UQP (Jam Roll), Hachette, Lothian Books, Houghton Mifflin (USA) and Random House (Woolshed). An intimate evening in the library after dark will be had with an intriguing panel of special guests, erotic fiction author, tattooist and drag queens who are willing to answer those awkward, inappropriate and uncomfortable questions. Many people become overwhelmed with the material that tends to be accumulated over a year, or indeed a lifetime.

The Rockhampton History Centre accepts a range of documentary heritage to add to various archival collections to help build an insight into the social activity of the region. These are important records which help assist researchers, local historians and family members well into the future.

These are examples of the types of material that can be donated to the collection: •

Old books with subject matter relating to the CQ region

Receipts, fliers or business cards from local businesses

•

Minute books, booklets, photos from local community organisations which may have disbanded

•

Old photographs relevant to the area (these can be copied and added to the collection)

•

School newsletters, yearbooks, presentation handouts and concert information

Funeral order of service or obituaries

Community notices or leaflets

•

Old maps, atlases, road directories of the CQ region

Letters and other correspondence, postcards, diaries

Tax Help Program If you need help lodging your tax return, you may be eligible for the free Tax Help program if your income is around $60,000 or less for the year.

Tax Help is a network of ATO-trained and accredited community volunteers who provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns online using myTax. Tax Help is available from July to October in all capital cities and many regional areas across Australia, including Rockhampton.
