Piedmont Cardiologist Offers Tips for Reducing Heart Disease Risk

Every minute, someone in the United States dies from a heart-related condition. Taking preventive actions early on is crucial to reducing one’s risk for the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, says Girum Mekonnen, M.D., cardiologist at Piedmont Heart of Conyers.

“Even though there are effective treatments available for heart conditions, these treatments address the illness after it has happened,” Dr. Mekonnen said. “It’s important to focus on prevention because this helps to address the problems before illness occurs.”

So, what can you do to reduce your risk? Dr. Mekonnen recommends: Regular physical activity Exercising on a regular basis has many benefits for your heart, like making it stronger and healthier. It also can lower blood pressure and cholesterol and help control diabetes. “People who don’t exercise are much more likely to develop heart disease,” Dr. Mekonnen said.

“There are many ways to stay physically active depending on a person’s level of fitness and exercise capacity, but what’s important is doing it regularly, as their condition allows.”

Avoiding tobacco products Smoking is the leading cause of preventable heart disease, and smoking and using other types of tobacco products can increase one’s risk for heart disease. No amount of smoking is safe. “It’s never too late to quit,” Dr. Mekonnen said. “Your risk for heart disease begins to decrease as soon as you quit smoking and continues to fall with increasing length of time since quitting.”

Being aware of family history Dr. Mekonnen also advises patients to be aware of any family history of heart conditions such as early (premature) coronary artery disease or heart attacks, heart failure and sudden cardiac deaths.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are among the most common risks for heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost half of everyone in the United States (49 percent) has at least one of these risks. Dr. Mekonnen said, “It is very important for patients to know their individual risk factors and work closely with their doctor to reduce their risk of future heart disease.”

Maintaining a healthy weight Obesity and being overweight can increase your risk for heart disease. “It can lead to certain conditions, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance or diabetes, which increase your risk,” Dr. Mekonnen said.

Effective strategies for maintaining a healthy weight include eating healthier snacks, with controlled portions and staying active.

A heart-healthy diet When coupled with regular exercise, a hearthealthy diet in proper portions can lower your cholesterol, help control your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and maintain a healthy weight – all of which are beneficial for the heart.

Dr. Mekonnen recommends heart-healthy diets such as a Mediterranean-style diet (lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and olive oil).

Breast cancer is an ever-present threat. Statistically, more than 12 percent of all women will be diagnosed positive in their lifetime.

Nutrition is another important factor in cancer prevention and recurrence. Just how important depends on the individual, but there is consensus that a smart diet would be plant-based and include fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts and whole grains.

Voted “Top Doc” in Henry County’s H magazine numerous times, Dr. Gordon is a native of Atlanta. Born at Georgia Baptist Hospital while her mother finished nursing school there, the doctor graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in genetics and molecular biology.

She graduated from Mercer University with a degree in medicine and completed a fouryear residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., where she was the administrative chief resident. Dr. Gordon is double board certified in general obstetrics and gynecology as well as in the new field of urogynecology.

Dr. Rice joined the Women’s Center in 2014.

He is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists.

The doctor grew up in Winder and earned his degree in biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Georgia. After graduating from UGA, Dr. Rice attended the Medical College of Georgia and subsequently moved to New York City for his general OB/GYN residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. He also attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where he completed his fellowship training in urogynecology.

These dog breeds are especially compatible with seniors Pets often make ideal companions.

They are around when a person needs support, they can provide protection for those living alone, they're always willing to lend an ear to problems, and many tend to offer unconditional love.

Seniors facing an empty nest or the loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy their spirits. Studies have shown that seniors can benefit both mentally and physically from having a pet around.

Pets can alleviate anxiety, depression and boredom.

While pets can provide comfort and companionship, they remain a significant responsibility. Seniors should find an animal that will fit in with their lifestyles. This is an important consideration for those seniors who travel frequently or have mobility issues. In addition, men and women living in senior communities or assisted living facilities should determine if there are any pet restrictions in place.

Those seniors who have decided that a dog will be the best fit can choose among several breeds that may be a good match for their needs. When selecting a dog, consider both size and temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle and will need

less maintenance. They are easily carried and won't take as long to bathe and groom. Smaller dogs also consume less food than larger breeds, reducing the expense of dog food and the hassle of wrangling large, heavy bags of chow. Temperament is also important, as some breeds tend to be more easygoing than others. Larger breeds may be preferable to a smaller breeds, which tend to be hyperactive. However, always remember there are pros and cons to each breed, and each dog will demonstrate his own personality traits.

The following are some dogs that can be especially compatible with seniors. * Pug: Equally playful and willing

to be a lap dog, the pug requires little exercise and grooming. The breed is typically nonaggressive and submissive. Pugs are good-natured and playful; they don't often bark and are easy to train. * Shih Tzu: The Shih Tzu lives for attention, but this breed can be dominant and difficult to train. The Shih Tzu will be alert to its surroundings and, despite its small stature, can be a good watchdog. * Pomeranian: Pomeranians look like big balls of fur and can bring a smile to an owner's face. The breed tends to be perky, can display dominance and can be difficult to train.

Because Pomeranians can be dog-aggressive, they may be best as the only pet in the house. * Yorkshire terrier: The Yorkie is a diminutive breed in size only, as they tend to have exuberant personalities that dwarf their stature. The ideal lap dog, Yorkies want to lie around and lounge, though some do like to bark. If the fur is kept short in a "puppy cut," the dog can be easy to maintain. * Pembroke Welsh Corgi: This medium-sized dog hails from Wales and typically requires only moderate exercise and little grooming. They are easy to train and moderately dominant. They don't bark excessively, and they often get along with other dogs. * Schnauzer: Available in three sizes, Schnauzers are good companions and protectors. This is an intelligent and loyal breed and will need to be kept amused to stave off boredom. * Brussels Griffon: These dogs do not shed, but they will require professional grooming at least once every 3 months. If socialized early, the Griffon can be a good companion but will likely remain wary of strangers. They are good watchdogs and devoted to their owners.

Hepatitis C: Baby Boomers Beware People born between 1945 and 1965 are five times more likely to have Hepatitis C, also known as HCV. According to the Centers for Disease Control, three out of four people with HCV are part of the baby boomer generation - and millions don’t even know they’re infected.

HCV is a contagious liver disease that ranges from a short-term illness to a chronic infection that attacks the liver.

The infection is spread primarily through contact with the blood of an infected person, and approximately 75-85% of people who become infected with the virus develop a serious, lifelong illness.

Protecting your skin is easy and super important We have all heard that we need to protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun. In fact, each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.

But a trip to the sunscreen section of your local drugstore can leave you reeling from abbreviation overload. UVA? UVB? What happened to plain old SPF? The new ratings and terminology can be a little confusing, but it means you get more information about effective skin protection.

The old SPF, or sun protection factor, didn’t give us the whole picture. The testing only measured protection against UVB rays. Today, we know that there are two kinds of harmful ultraviolet rays: UVA, which are

used in tanning beds and cause premature aging of the skin, and UVB, which cause sunburns. Both play a role in the development of skin cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration has new guidelines for the marketing of over-thecounter products containing sunscreen beginning this summer.

The FDA is requiring companies to be more accountable and transparent in the marketing of their products.

And that’s good news for

consumers. Products now have to undergo successful testing to claim they offer “broad-spectrum sun protection” (protection against both UVA and UVB rays), and will be allowed to state they help reduce the risk of cancer and early skin aging only if they contain SPF 15 or higher.

They also have to include water-resistance times how long the product should last during swimming or sweating as well as be more conservative in the product’s claims. For example, companies are no longer allowed to call their products waterproof, sweat proof or sunblock, which overstates their effectiveness.

Four ways to protect your skin Cover up. Even when it’s hot, lightweight, breathable clothing can keep you cool and your skin safe.

Wear a hat. Choose one that shields your head and shoulders from the sun.

Apply sunscreen correctly.

Use about 2 tablespoons, and apply 20 to 30 minutes prior to going outdoors. I recommend an SPF 30 or higher. Also be sure to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and after water exposure (swimming), even with sunscreen products labeled as “water resistant.”

Limit exposure. Seek the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.

Thumb/wrist pain – is it tendonitis?

Many conditions can cause pain at the thumb side of the wrist, including fractures, sprains/strains, arthritis, This tendonitis is joint inflammation, and characterized by pain tendonitis. Tendonitis at the bony prominence at the thumb side of of the wrist. The pain the wrist often arises 770-933-1900occurs with lifting and

twisting activities, and often radiates up into the thumb and down the forearm. It can be accompanied by swelling and the development of a knot at the side of the wrist, although these symptoms are not universally present.

Occasionally, one may notice some numbness or pins and needles sensation at the area.

The first thing to do is give the thumb and wrist a rest. Obtain a brace that immobilizes both Polk

Simple wrist braces that allow the thumb to move freely are better than nothing, but still not as effective as braces that include the thumb as well. Ice, topical creams, and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen are helpful and can be used in conjunction with the thumb/wrist brace. If symptoms fail to resolve, consult your Resurgens’ physician for further evaluation and treatment.

Tips for daily sun protection and skin cancer awareness

Despite numerous volunteer campaigns and initiatives for increasing public awareness on sun protection and skin cancer screening, the incidence of skin cancer continues to rise. Skin cancer includes basal cell carcinoma (most common), squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

1. What are the types of skin cancer?

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer appears on sun exposed skin usually as a small red bump or patch and rarely metastasizes.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer in the general population, but is the most common in organ transplant recipients. It appears on sun exposed skin as a red, scaly patch and may metastasize.

Melanoma is the skin cancer with the worst prognosis and

can appear on sun exposed and non sun exposed skin.

The first indicator of a concern for melanoma, is a mole that has changed color and has increased in size with an irregular border. The rate of metastasis of melanoma depends on the depth of the lesion, so making the diagnosis early in the growth of the melanoma is important. Sun protection and skin cancer screening examinations are a MUST! 2. Who is at risk for skin cancer?

People who have fair or easily burned skin, blue or green eyes, red or naturally blond hair, extensive freckling and a history of extensive outdoor sun exposure through work or recreation are at risk for developing skin cancer. A prior history or family history of skin cancer is also a risk factor. Certain patients who are immunosuppressed from an organ transplant or lifelong immunosuppression

for a medical condition are at also high risk for developing skin cancer.

3. What can one do to prevent skin cancer?

Sun protection with application of sunscreens and sun avoidance is important to prevent the development of skin cancer. Once a month skin self examination looking for any lesions that are new, changed in size or color or lesions that have turned red or bled and not gone away, is also helpful. Enlist the help of a family member when you examine your skin. Everyone should have a yearly skin examination for skin cancer screening by their dermatologist, to help determine who is at risk for skin cancer.

The dermatologist can also inform you what to look out for when you examine your skin for suspicious lesions or moles. If you suspect you may have a skin cancer make an appointment with your board certified dermatologist as soon as possible. Early treatment of skin cancer and pre skin cancer is key.

4. What sunscreen do I use and how/when do I apply it?

Everyone should apply a broad spectrum sunscreen, SPF >45, preferably one that contains a physical sunscreen, e.g zinc or titanium dioxide, as they are less irritating to those with sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens offer excellent protection but may cause redness and irritation in those with sensitive skin types. Fragrance should be avoided as this

may aggravate an existing allergy or irritation. Most broad spectrum sunscreens (protect from UVA and UVB rays) are light in formulation and easy to apply. Sprays are now available for ease of application, especially for children. Sun screen should be applied liberally on all sun exposed sites at least 20 minutes before going out into the sun. Reapply every two hours.

5. What are other ways I can protect myself from the sun?

As well as applying sunscreen, limit out-door activities between 10am and 4pm. Many companies provide sun protective clothing for those at high risk for skin cancer; however, wearing a long sleeved shirt, long pants or broad brimmed hat also protects against sun burn and sun damage. Clothes with tightly woven fabric protect against the sun. Special clothes with SPF are also available. Artificial tanning salons should be avoided!

Contrary to popular opinion, UV light in tanning salons is not regulated and light skin patients will easily burn.

Finally, it is important to get outside and enjoy the summer - just protect yourself! A sun tan does not protect you against skin cancer. Do not forget to wear sun protective clothing and re-apply your sunscreen. And if you are concerned about a changing mole or red spot that does not go away, make an appointment today with your board certified dermatologist for a skin check.

Non-Invasive Hemorrhoid Therapy Hemorrhoids are quite common, with nearly half of all adults having experienced the associated itching, rectal pain and bleeding during bowel movements by age 50. The good news is there are several ways to treat hemorrhoids and ease the pain, itching or other symptoms they may cause.

They develop in the anus and lower rectum as inflamed and swollen veins, and are caused by strained bowel movements, pregnancy, childbirth, obesity and other conditions and actions that increase pressure on these veins.

Hemorrhoids are either internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus), but a person can have both types at the same time.

Typically, hemorrhoids are diagnosed following a physical and/ or rectal exam. The good news

Pain is often the fire that brings patients into the office for evaluation and treatment, but the location of pain is often not the cause of the problem, just like a fire obvious on the roof, may have started in the basement. Managing prediabetes or diabetes Diabetes and its precursor is a major problem, both in the United States and across the globe. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that the global prevalence of diabetes figures to rise from 8 percent in 2011 to 10 percent by 2030.

Preventing diabetes should be a priority for men, women and children, but management must take precedence for the millions of people who have already been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, making healthy food choices is an essential step in preventing or managing diabetes. Making those choices can be difficult for those people who have never before paid much attention to their diets, but the AHA offers the following advice to people dealing with prediabetes or diabetes.

Limit foods that may worsen your condition.

Some foods, including fiberrich whole grains and fish like salmon that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help people with prediabetes or diabetes. But many more foods must be limited, if not largely ignored. Limit your consumption of sweets and added sugars, which can be found in soda, candy, cakes, and jellies.

It's also good to limit your sodium intake and resist fatty meats like beef and pork.

Document your eating habits.

The AHA recommends that people with prediabetes or diabetes maintain a food log to see how certain foods affect their blood glucose levels. Within 60 to 90 minutes of eating, check your blood glucose levels to see how your body reacts to the foods you eat. As your food log becomes more extensive, you will begin to see which foods match up well with your body and which foods you may want to avoid.

Plan your meals.

Hectic schedules have derailed many a healthy lifestyle, but people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes do not have the luxury of straying from healthy diets. Plan your meals in advance so your eating schedule is not erratic and your diet includes the right foods, and not just the most convenient foods.

Bring lunch and a healthy snack to work with you each day rather than relying on fast food or other potentially unhealthy options in the vicinity of your office.

Embrace alternative ingredients.

Upon being diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, many people assume they must abandon their favorite foods. But that's not necessarily true. Many dishes can be prepared with alternative ingredients that are diabetes-friendly.

In fact, the AHA has compiled a collection of diabetes-friendly recipes that can be accessed by visiting www.heart.org.

A prediabetes or diabetes diagnosis requires change, but these conditions can be managed without negatively affecting patients' quality of life.

DID YOU KNOW? A prediabetes diagnosis means you have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Excessive glucose in the blood can damage the body over time, and those diagnosed with prediabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the majority of people with prediabetes do not have any symptoms. The condition is typically revealed after blood tests indicate blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Being overweight and living an inactive lifestyle are two of the biggest risk factors for prediabetes, and doctors may recommend that men and women 45 and older, especially those who are overweight, be tested for prediabetes. Those who have been diagnosed with prediabetes will not necessarily develop diabetes down the road. In fact, the NIDDK notes that men and women who lose at least 5 to 10 percent of their starting weight can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and may even be able to reverse prediabetes.

Anushka Amin,DMD purchases established Conyers dental practice

Dr. Anushka Amin still laughs when she recalls her first week as a dentist. One of her earliest patients was her father who came to the office with a broken tooth.

“I had been on the job four days when my Dad broke his tooth,” she said. “He told me, ‘I don’t think it’s that bad,’ but he had split his tooth down the middle. I was like, ‘Dad, do you think you could have broken this tooth a little later?’” Nevertheless I repaired the tooth.

“I love that he told his friends about it,” Amin said. “In the Indian culture, you’ve got to be a doctor or a lawyer and when I decided to become a dentist, he was like, oh, why? But dentistry is really a good field...Now he’ll always tell his friends with young daughters that they should think about dentistry for them. I know he’s proud of me.”

Dr. Kaushik Amin, MD, a physician of internal medicine in Conyers always thought his daughter would become a doctor and some day take over his practice. She was headed that way, but decided instead to enter the dental field.

Dr. Anushka Amin, DMD, recently bought the 34 year old Conyers practice of Dr. Daniel Hodges, DMD. With the purchase of the dental office, Amin is coming back home.

Born in Arizona, Amin and her family moved to Conyers in 1993. She attended Flat Shoals Elementary School, Memorial Middle and then graduated from Rockdale County High’s Magnet School for Science and Technology in 2005. Amin was part of the student council and played tennis during her school years.

After high school graduation, she headed to the University of Georgia as a premed student.

However, a mission trip to Costa Rica and Panama changed her plans. As part of a medical mission team, Amin had to do a dental rotation and one of the first things she did was pull a tooth for a patient.

“I was like, ‘Oh,’” she recalls. “...I saw there was so much more to the dental field. I already had a love for the science, but the artistic aspect of dentistry appealed to me. I switched and very quickly did everything I could do to get into dental school.”

Amin finished her microbiology degree at UGA in 2009, and enrolled in the Medical College of Georgia’s dental school in Augusta. She received her dental degree in 2013, and went to work as a dentist in the Rockdale area before going to work at an office in Sandy Springs. Amin had been in Sandy Springs for almost a year when she learned Hodges was interested in selling his practice in Conyers.

Avenue, Suite A, in Conyers at the end of February and is excited about the future. Amin is also pleased that Hodges continues to serve as a dentist in the practice while she welcomes new clients and expands the business.

“I’ve been running into classmates left and right,” she said. “It’s been amazing.”

She also enjoys seeing her father and mother, Nita Amin, who worked as a pharmacist before becoming a stay-at-home mom when her children were younger. In addition to Anushka, the Amins are the parents of a son, Shail, an Atlanta accountant and another daughter, Karishma, a 7th grade science teacher in the John’s Creek area.

Amin met her husband, Arjun Patel when they were both students at UGA. Patel is an orthodontist with his own practice in Sandy Springs. The couple dated all during dental school and throughout his residency before getting married two and a half years ago.

She said they enjoy playing with their Golden-doodle dog named Luna.

Amin is also enjoying settling into her work.

“It’s one of those things where people are always so nervous going to the dentist and seeing the dentist that I like to think I keep things laid back,” Amin said. “Dr. Hodges is like that too... We try to make it a comfortable experience. It doesn’t have

to be super scary.”

She said she likes the opportunity to make connections with her patients-part of the job that helped draw her toward the dental field. Hodges has long exemplified what it means to create those doctor-patient bonds, Amin added.

“Dr. Hodges sees patients whose children are now his patients,” she said. “That’s part of dentistry.

You really become part of people’s families...There are not a lot of jobs that give you that and that’s the part I like most of all.”

“Our office is super fun and we joke around with everyone,” Amin said. “I feel like some patients who are nervous when they come in, by the time they leave, they say, ‘That wasn’t so bad.’ I’ll take that it wasn’t so bad.”

She said while the office is expanding, she hopes to keep it the same in many ways.

“For me personally, I want to keep the same feel Dr. Hodges has always had-the same comfortable feel,” Amin said. “We’re encouraging people to check out our Facebook page. I like to post pictures. I’d like for people to come and meet the staff. They’ve been there 18-19-plus years...

We encourage people to come give us a chance.”

Mohs Surgery for the Treatment of Skin Cancer An estimated two million new cases of skin cancer in the U.S. are projected each year.

The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. With early detection and treatment, skin cancer is highly curable. Skin cancer is easily diagnosed with a skin biopsy. There are different treatment options for skin cancer including excisional surgery, cryosurgery (freezing), electro surgery (burning), radiation, prescription medications, and the specialized surgical technique of Mohs Micrographic Surgery. The Mohs surgery procedure has proven to be up to 99 percent effective for basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma, the most common types of skin cancer.

Mohs surgery, developed in

1938 by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, is microscopically controlled surgery that involves the complete evaluation of the surgical margins for skin cancer removal. Mohs surgery is typically an office based procedure performed safely under local anesthesia. During Mohs surgery, the skin cancer is removed layer by layer and the tissue is processed at an on-site laboratory.

The tissue slides are examined by the Mohs surgeon who performs the pathology services, all while the patient remains in the office.

precisely from only the area with remaining cancer and this additional layer of tissue is processed and microscopically examined.

This process continues until all of the cancerous tissue is removed. After Mohs surgery confirms that all of the skin cancer has been removed, the surgical defect is immediately ready for repair.

There are several options for repair that include allowing the wound to heal on its own or surgically repairing the defect.

Piedmont Newton Now Offers 3-D Mammograms Piedmont Newton Hospital now offers 3-D breast imaging technology. The tomosynthesis 3-dimensional imaging units take better images of the breast interior, decreasing the number of “false positive” diagnoses and increasing the chances of early detection of cancer.

Piedmont Newton is one of few hospitals in the area offering the technology. Breast tomosynthesis allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time, building what is essentially a 3-dimensional mammogram.

“Early detection is critical in increasing the survival rate among breast cancer patients,” said Wendy Hankins, RN, cancer navigator at Piedmont Newton. “When de2-D 3-D MAMMOGRAPHY MAMMOGRAPHY tected early, most patients have a better chance of being treated successfully.”

According to the American Cancer Society, about 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017. Survival rates continue to increase due to early detection, increased awareness and improved treatment options. Today, there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

“While digital mammography remains one of the most advanced technologies today, it’s only a 2-dimensional image,” said Amanda Bauer, M.D., breast radiologist at Piedmont Newton. “Overlapping tissues in a standard mammogram may lead to false positive results where there is the appearance of an abnormality that isn’t there and false negative readings where the tissue obscures a malignant tumor.”

In addition to 3-D breast imaging, Piedmont Newton provides screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, bone densitometry, stereotactic guided biopsy, ultrasound guided biopsy and MRI guided biopsies. For more information, visit piedmont.org.
