She selected the worldrenowned University of Florida Health Science Center for her residency training.

She graduated as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist in 2004 and was immediately offered a teaching position at the University of Florida. She is board certified. She was an Assistant Professor at the University Of Florida for 11 years, where she contributed to the education and training of countless young physicians. For most of the same time, she also served as the Medical Director of the Beaches Women’s Health Specialists. In 2014, she joined North Florida OB GYN and enjoyed her practice in Jacksonville until the opportunity to return home to Georgia presented itself.

Dr. Farrow will return to her hometown and join the Covington Women’s Health Specialists Team! She is excited to practice at Piedmont Newton Hospital, where her family has a tradition of service and volunteering. She has special interests in diagnosing female cancers, performing minimally invasive surgeries, and helping with sexual problems. Dr. Farrow is also active medical aid work in Haiti.

Joining Dr. Farrow in her move back home are her husband who was able to transfer to the area and their three children.

Menopausal Hormone Therapy Does NOT Increase the Risk of Death

Finally! Reassuring news for countless women who rely on hormone replacement therapy to extinguish their hot flashes and help them feel more like they want to feel. The results of two randomized clinical trials, that included more than 27,000 menopausal women, offer comforting evidence that hormones do not increase the risk of premature death.

The evidence was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in September 2017. Experts reported the results of two clinical trials. In one trial, 16,608 women took either a placebo or a combination of estrogen and progesterone for an average of 5.6 years. In the other study, 10,739 women took either a placebo or estrogen alone for an average of 7.2 years. The women studied ranged in age from 50 to 79 years, covering the ages when menopausal symptoms are usually most severe and interfere with the quality of life for many women.

Death rates from cancer, heart disease and stroke were equal in each group showing that the use of hormones did not cause more death in these women when compared with women not taking hormones. The mortality rates were presented as the ultimate “bottom line” in looking at the overall effect of using hormone replacement therapy. However, the mortality rates being the same in each group also showed that the use of hormones did not result in women living longer that women who did not take hormones.

While hormones may not contribute to living longer lives, most gynecologists and hormone users agree that they improve the quality of life for women who choose to use them. By controlling the disruptive symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings, hormone replacement therapy helps women feel and sleep better allowing them to be more productive and happier. The North American Menopause Society recommends that if hormones are to be used, women initiate the therapy before the age 60, or within 10 years of becoming menopausal.

Each woman considering whether to start or stop hormone therapy should sit down with her gynecologist and talk through the options and her individual risk factors. Women at high risk of breast cancer, stroke or blood clots will not be able to safely use hormone therapy. There is a slight increased risk of breast cancer if a woman takes a combination of estrogen and progesterone, however if a woman has had a hysterectomy and uses only estrogen, there is actually a slightly decreased risk of breast cancer (check out the Susan G. Reduce your risk

of colds and flu this season

Vaccination schedules become a way of life for parents to young children. But vaccinations aren’t just for kids, and adults should keep tabs on their immunization histories to ensure they’re up-to-date with vaccinations for their particular age group and lifestyle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the elderly are more likely to die of a vaccine-preventable disease than other age groups. The immune system begins to decline as we age, so the body can benefit from the diseasefighting boost provided by vaccinations. Individuals at any age should discuss immunizations with their doctors, but it’s a particularly important conversation for those age 50 and older.

Spending significant time in close proximity to others indoors can make people more susceptible to the flu. As a result, winter, when people typically spend more time indoors than outdoors, is often dominated by the sniffling and sneezing synonymous with the flu.

Colds are largely transmitted through surface contact with the virus or direct contact with a sick individual. The cold virus is then contracted on the hands and typically transferred to the nose, eyes or mouth through inadvertent touching of these areas. Spending time indoors in close quarters with other people, which is more common in the winter, can facilitate the spread of colds as well as the flu virus.

If you come down with the flu, increase the humidity in your home by running the shower with the door open, using a recreational aquarium or boiling pots of water. Maintain a warm indoor temperature to reduce the likelihood that the flu virus will spread.

Seasonal Changes How to improve indoor air quality in winter Homes tend to be stuffier in autumn and winter. As temperatures outside dip, windows are closed and air quality inside homes can suffer.

Poor indoor air quality can not only be uncomfortable, causing residents to experience headaches, dry eyes and nasal congestion, but also can be unhealthy. According to the American Lung Association, poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, such as asthma.

Allergies can strike in autumn as well People often mistakenly associate seasonal allergies with the spring. But allergies can still appear even long after the final flower buds of spring have stopped blooming.

Ragweed is the most common culprit with regard to autumn allergies. According to Bruce Gordon, MD, a professor at Harvard University and an ear, nose and throat allergy specialist, ragweed has a distinct season. Its pollen is produced in abundance between late-summer and mid-fall. In warmer climates, ragweed may continue to cause allergy symptoms into the winter.

A single ragweed plant can produce one billion grains of pollen per season. The weed grows prolifically through many areas of the country. Lightweight pollen on ragweed can travel on the wind up to 400 miles, so even if ragweed isn't abundant where you live, you still may be affected.

In addition to ragweed, pigweed, sheep sorrel, curly dock, and goldenrod also may contribute to autumn allergies.

Mold is another potential foe come the fall. Mold can thrive in compost piles and leaves that cover the ground during this time of year. In some climates, mold allergy season begins in mid- to late-fall, right after ragweed season, potentially making mold and ragweed a one-two punch for those susceptible to these allergens.

When battling fall allergies, consider using antihistamines and special nasal sprays, which may help to mitigate the symptoms of these seasonal allergies.

Though it’s not feasible or healthy to open windows when temperatures outside dip to near or below freezing, there are steps everyone can take to improve the indoor air quality in their homes.

• Add to your décor with plants. Plants provide both aesthetic and practical appeal to a home’s interior. Houseplants can clean and purify the air in a home, helping to remove formaldehyde, benzene and other toxins that can make indoor air unhealthy to breathe. Benzene is an irritant that can cause dizziness, headache, nausea, and blurred vision, among other side effects.

Formaldehyde, which is often found in homes thanks to its widespread use in a range of products, can cause watery eyes, nausea and wheezing.

• Watch what you are lighting up. Many homeowners know that smoking indoors drastically reduces indoor air quality, putting even nonsmokers at heightened risk of developing various respiratory ailments. Homeowners concerned about the indoor air quality in their homes should ban smoking inside, no matter how low temperatures dip outside. In addition, homeowners with wood-burning stoves and fireplaces should be especially diligent

maintaining these features, as they can release harmful soot and smoke if they are not taken care of. Some people may also be allergic to incense and scented candles, so keep a watchful eye on residents and guests whenever you light candles or sticks of incense.

If any symptoms of allergies appear, avoid lighting any more candles or incense, waiting until you can open the windows if you want to light any again.

• Purchase an air purifier.

Air purifiers are beneficial year-round, helping to remove allergens and particles from a home. High-efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA filters, are extremely effective at removing airborne particulates from the air inside your home.

• Pay attention to pets.

Like their owners, pets tend to spend more time indoors during the winter. That means more fur and pet dander, the skin flakes in an animal’s fur or hair that can trigger allergic reactions, is likely in your home during the winter than in the summer.

To combat this, bathe your pets regularly in the winter, making sure to wash the animal’s bedding in hot water on a weekly basis as well.

• Open the windows when possible. Winter does not typically provide many opportunities to open the windows, but you might get a few chances to let some fresh air in through the windows during winter. Make the most of these opportunities, and when possible crack the windows when you’re cleaning so dust and other particles that kick up have a path outside of your home.

Clean interior air should be a year-round priority, but homeowners may have to go the extra mile to keep their homes’ interior air clean when winter arrives.

Melanoma and Breast Cancer: A New Warning If you’ve had breast cancer or melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer), be aware that having either one raises the odds of developing the other, according to a recent study published in the Irish Journal of Medical Science. While earlier studies have noted an association between the two malignancies, this is the first time researchers have explicitly advised doctors to monitor breast cancer patients for signs of melanoma, and vice versa. They also recommend that melanoma patients with a family history of breast cancer have regular mammography’s or breast MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging).

What the Numbers Say Investigators led by photo biologist Gillian M. Murphy, MD, of the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, and a member of The Skin Cancer Foundation’s International Advisory Council, examined the 6,788 cases of melanoma and 27,597 cases of breast carcinoma between 1994 and 2007 documented in Ireland’s National Cancer Registry. They mathematically determined that if there was no statistically significant relationship between the two,

30-35 patients could be expected to have both malignancies. Instead, there were 127. “In general, patients with melanoma or other skin cancers are always at higher risk of developing other malignancies,” Dr. Murphy commented.

“But this is about a fourfold increase, which raises the possibility of a genetic predisposition linking the two cancers.”

The study corroborates the findings of journals such as Annals of Oncology and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, which reported that breast cancer patients have between 1.4 and 2.7 times the risk of developing melanoma. And the danger is reciprocal: The International Journal of Cancer noted that female melanoma patients have a

Urogynecology and Gynecology Care

E

very day, millions of women silently wrestle with issues that cause untold embarrassment, inconvenience and discomfort. While many people think that urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are uncommon issues, affecting only a small number of elderly or disabled women, the truth is that these issues are remarkably common.

In fact, data from Yale University shows that about 35% of women who visit their gynecologist’s office for routine care have urinary incontinence (UI), while 40% experience moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse.

Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together.

And, indeed, pelvic floor conditions are more common than hypertension, depression, or diabetes in women.

Yet, if you’re like many women, seeking help for these conditions can be a source of embarrassment or fear - or even hopelessness. The stigma of Ul and other pelvic floor conditions is enough to keep many women from admitting their concerns, even to their own physicians. And living with these conditions can be devastating psychologically, as well as socially, emotionally and physically. The good news is that, while problems like

these are common, they aren’t considered normal or inevitable, regardless of age or health, and many effective forms of treatment are available.

The field of urogynecology is a specialized area of both urology and gynecology that focuses on treating women who are faced with these sensitive issues. Urogynecologists receive extensive training in the treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, as well as the muscles and connective tissue that support these organs.

Treatment for incontinence and prolapse - protrusion of the bladder or vagina from your body - can be either non-surgical or surgical. The first step in getting help is to see a physician who has experience treating these types of conditions and learn about what may be causing your problem. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and medical history, conduct a physical exam, and discuss with you which tests are appropriate.

Your physical exam may reveal signs of medical conditions that can cause incontinence, like treatable blockages from bowel or pelvic growths. Tests may include an ultrasound, cystoscopy (using a tiny camera to see inside your urethra and bladder), a urinalysis, and urodynamics to measure pressure in the bladder and the flow of urine.

Depending upon your diagnosis, the severity of your symptoms and your overall

health, your physician may recommend conservative, nonsurgical therapies as the first approach to treat your pelvic floor disorder. These include medications, pelvic muscle exercise, lifestyle and dietary modifications, use of a vaginal support device called a pessary, and biofeedback.

If your condition doesn’t improve, your doctor may suggest surgery. Many of the available surgical procedures for incontinence and prolapse are minimally invasive, including some robotic-assisted surgeries that may offer a more effective treatment option. Using tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, your surgeon can operate with greater precision and control, so your recovery is faster and less painful, with a better clinical outcome.

These are just some of the procedures your doctor may consider to treat your incontinence or prolapse.

Of course, your physician’s recommendations will depend on your diagnosis.

Exercise plays an important role in cancer care Listening to his patients tell how cancer treatments impact their quality of life, Dr. Angelo Rizzo gives them more than a sympathetic nod of the head. He gives them hope and he gives them his own story– one that began 17 years ago when he was diagnosed with leukemia and given three to five years to live.

“I got to learn first hand just how debilitating the side effects were, but how much exercise improved my pain, energy level and other side effects during my chemo,” he said.

Dr. Rizzo, a physical therapist is the founder and president of Therapeutic Solutions Inc., a specialty physical therapy practice in Conyers that 18 years ago pioneered and set a new standard of care for cancer survivors. With more than 43 years of orthopedic and sports physical therapy experience, Dr. Rizzo is also a national and local speaker on the role of physical therapy and exercise in cancer care. “Rehab was not the standard of care in the oncology community,” Dr. Rizzo said. “I set out as our primary mission to educate the oncology and lay community. A year later I got diagnosed with leukemia.”

He has been in complete remission for 17 years.

“I made it our mission as a company to educate the public and oncology community about the important role that exercise and PT plays,” Dr. Rizzo said, adding that patients from Athens to Marietta come to the Therapeutic Solutions practice located in Rockdale Medical Plaza on Milstead Road in Conyers.

“We’re the only one in the community doing this,” he said. “We work with patients prior to cancer treatment to educate them on what they can do to minimize their side effects like fatigue and swelling. We work with them during treatments and then after...I feel like my experience as a leukemia survivor and the thousands of treatments we’ve done with other cancer patients gives me the pulse of what those patients are going through. Odontophobia. Is it contagious? Is there a cure? Well, sometimes and yes. One can “catch it” simply by hearing others talk about the whir of a drill or the scrape of a metal blade on their tooth.

But the cure can be pure bliss, thanks to sedation dentistry.

Odontophobia--the fear of the dentist--is a real condition that experts say makes an estimated 9-15 percent of Americans avoid going to the dentist.

While fear of the dentist can range from simply having anxiety about an upcoming dental appointment or feeling nervous in the waiting room to developing a real phobia or dread that makes one avoid the dentist altogether, sedation dentistry offers a solution. It uses medicine to help a patient relax; the medication used will have the patient on the edge of consciousness and easily awakened once the procedure is complete.

Whether used for surgical extractions, root canals or even simple fillings, IV sedation can be used for the patient

who is experiencing anxiety that is keeping them from dealing with their dental health.

Not all dentists can provide IV sedation. Only dentists who have been specifically trained are able to offer this comforting option to their patients.

Sedation dentistry is a solace for many and offers the patient additional choices in dental care. Sedation can be administered as an inhaled gas, commonly known as nitrous or ”laughing gas.” Administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose, the gas quickly wears off so the patient is often able to drive home following the procedure, experts say.

Oral sedation comes in different strengths and is administered from mild to moderate based on the scheduled procedure. About an hour prior to the procedure, the patient will take a pill that causes drowsiness and sometimes even makes the patient fall asleep, which is what most people think of when they hear the words “sedation

dentistry.” Whatever type of sedation a patient chooses, a local anesthetic or numbing medication will also be administered at the site of the dental procedure.

While anxiety and fear might keep many people from the dentist, thereby paving the way for gingivitis, periodonital disease, early tooth loss and a range of other serious complications, the use of sedation dentistry offers a real path away from pain and a real choice for patients in their oral care. Reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectcal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both the United States and Canada. So say the American Cancer Society and the Canadian Cancer Society, who project nearly 60,000 Americans and Canadians will lose their lives to colorectal cancer in 2015 alone.

Though many risk factors for colorectal cancer, including age, heredity and racial and ethnic background, are beyond an individual’s control, that does not mean people are helpless to reduce their risk for this potentially deadly disease. Maintaining or adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce a person’s risk of developing various cancers, and colorectal cancer is no exception. The following are a few ways adults can reduce their chance of developing colorectal cancer.

• Get screened. As is the case with many cancer treatments, colorectal cancer treatments are much more effective when cancer is detected and treated early.

BOARD CERTIFIED PHYSICIANS

Colorectal cancer screenings help find polyps before they become cancerous. In addition, people may not immediately associate symptoms of colorectal cancer with the disease, instead thinking such symptoms are indicative of a less serious illness or condition. Screenings can not only determine if those symptoms are a result of colorectal cancer but also find colorectal cancer before such symptoms even develop.

• Reconsider your diet. Adopting a healthier diet is another way many men and women can reduce their risk for colorectal cancer. Red meat is a great source of many nutrients, including protein, iron and zinc. But studies have shown that a diet high in red meat increases a person’s risk for colorectal cancer, which may be due to chemicals known as nitrites forming when meat is digested or processed.

• Cut back on alcohol consumption. The International Agency on Cancer Research notes that there is sufficient evidence

linking alcohol consumption to colorectal cancer. Men and women who excessively consume alcohol may be at greater risk of colorectal cancer because such consumers tend to have low levels of folic acid in the body.

Many risk factors for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control, but men and women still can take steps to significantly reduce their risk of developing this deadly disease.

Your age, lifestyle and family play role in prevention There is no magic formula that predicts who will be diagnosed with breast cancer and no one is absolutely not at risk for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is typically most treatable when it is detected at earlier stages, so breast screening is a very important part of a woman’s health care plan.

Most people don’t realize that about 80 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a relative who had the disease.

That is why it’s so important to get yearly check-ups and mammograms for anyone over the age of 40.

Two easy ways to reduce your risk for breast cancer: • Eat healthy • Stay fit Because breast cancer has been associated with obesity, watching your diet and exercising are great lifestyle changes anyone can make (and they have benefits for other aspects of women’s health as well!)

Family History If a woman does have a family history of breast cancer, her risk may be increased so she has several options to learn more.

A harmful genetic mutation can be inherited from a mother or father. Each child of a parent who carries a mutation in one of these genes has a 50 percent chance (or 1 in 2) of also inheriting the mutation.

Therefore, genetic testing is not just information for one person, but a whole family.

Genetic counseling and testing can help women understand how their family history impacts their odds of developing breast cancer and learn about options for increased screening or even surgery to reduce their risk.

A simple blood or saliva test can determine if a person carries a mutation in a gene that increases the chance of developing breast, or other cancers.

The most well-known examples are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes; however additional breast cancer genes have been discovered as well.

Anyone considering testing should first speak with their doctor who can refer them to a genetic counselor, so all of the implications of testing can be discussed.

Age is an important risk factor The time for average risk women to begin having yearly mammograms is age 40, but some doctors recommend beginning earlier depending on certain factors, like family history.

Although mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, statistics show that by screening for breast cancers and detecting them at the earliest possible point, they can lower the risk of a woman dying of breast cancer by 35 percent in women over the age of 50.

Thumb/wrist pain – is it tendonitis? insidiously without an inciting event, although it can occasionally result from an injury. It can happen to anyone, although it is seen more often in women than in men. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are particularly prone to develop this condition, as are caregivers of infants and young children.

Many conditions can cause pain at the thumb side of the wrist, including fractures, sprains/strains, arthritis, This tendonitis is joint inflammation, and characterized by pain tendonitis. Tendonitis at the bony prominence at the thumb side of of the wrist. The pain the wrist often arises 770-933-1900occurs with lifting and

twisting activities, and often radiates up into the thumb and down the forearm. It can be accompanied by swelling and the development of a knot at the side of the wrist, although these symptoms are not universally present.

Occasionally, one may notice some numbness or pins and needles sensation at the area.

The first thing to do is give the thumb and wrist a rest. Obtain a brace that immobilizes both Polk

the thumb and the wrist.

Simple wrist braces that allow the thumb to move freely are better than nothing, but still not as effective as braces that include the thumb as well. Ice, topical creams, and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen are helpful and can be used in conjunction with the thumb/wrist brace. If symptoms fail to resolve, consult your Resurgens’ physician for further evaluation and treatment.

Understanding & Recognizing Celiac Disease Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten – a protein commonly found in wheat, rye, and barley – leading to difficulty in digesting food. While there are only 40,000 known cases of celiac disease in the United States, it’s estimated that this digestive disorder affects more than two million Americans – including adults, adolescents, and children. People who have a first-degree relative with celiac disease have a 1 in 10 risk of developing it.

Signs & Symptoms Celiac disease can be difficult to diagnose because it affects people differently. Some develop celiac disease as children, while others later as adults. The ‘classic’ symptoms of celiac disease include: • • • • •

Abdominal Pain and Bloating Vomiting Chronic Diarrhea Weight Loss or Failure to Thrive Pale, Foul-smelling, or Fatty Stool

Some of the less typical, nongastrointestinal manifestations may include: • • • •

Arthritis / Joint Pain Osteopenia / Osteoporosis Dental Enamel Defects Delayed Growth and Puberty

• Dermatitis Herpetiformis (itchy skin rash) • Fatigue • Depression or Anxiety • Irritability and Behavioral Issues • Seizures or Migraines • Iron Deficiency Anemia • Missed Menstrual Periods • Infertility or Recurrent Miscarriage

Young children tend to exhibit more classic signs of celiac disease along with growth problems, while older children and adults tend to have symptoms that are not entirely gastrointestinal in nature. Recent research has demonstrated that only a third of adult patients diagnosed with celiac disease experience diarrhea. In fact, the most common sign of celiac disease in adults is iron deficiency anemia that does not respond to iron therapy.

Detection & Treatment If you are experiencing these symptoms or have additional risk factors, you should be evaluated for celiac disease by a gastroenterologist. Highly sensitive and specific tests can be useful screening tools.

If celiac disease is suspected, an upper endoscopy with small intestinal biopsies is recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Once confirmed, complete avoidance of gluten is the only real treatment available at this time. Guidance from your physician or a registered dietitian can be quite helpful in maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet.

Ways to stay healthy this holiday season

W

ith the holiday season upon us, many people’s schedules are hectic once again. There are social events and family gatherings to attend, shopping ventures to make, and decorating to be done.

While fun, the holiday season can be a time of added pressure, which leads to stress and other unhealthy situations.

At a time when you want to be at your best, stress can affect your physical well-being. The American Psychological Association says the hustle and bustle of the holidays has psychological consequences for some people. More people are inclined to feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, around the holidays. The National Institute of Mental Health says chronic stress can lower immunity and cause excretory, digestive and reproductive systems to stop working properly. Stress also may cause you to eat unhealthy snacks to cope, and that can lead to unwanted weight gain.

Stress is not the only potential health hazard that can arise around the holidays. A greater number of parties expose you to an abundance of foods and drinks you may not consume on a regular basis, and that can lead to a lot of mindless eating. Weight gained during this time of year can be difficult to shed come January, when colder temperatures challenge many peoples’ motivation to exercise.

Also, social settings put you in close contact with a greater number of people, potentially increasing your exposure to germs.

You can still feel your best

during the holidays. Follow these tips for maintaining a healthy mind and body.

• Get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine can protect you against various strains of the flu. Get a flu shot before the holidays so you are ready for cold and flu season.

• Carry disinfecting wipes.

Germs can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has come and gone. Studies from researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson have found the flu virus — and even the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA — on airline tray tables. Buses, trains and doors all may be harboring germs. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes and allow them to air-dry before touching them.

This can help you avoid coming into contact with germs.

• Balance your activities.

It can be tempting to overbook your schedule with a ton of activities, but this may ultimately prove stressful.

Leave days open to relax and do things you want to do, such as viewing Christmas light displays or even just unwinding at home with a good book. Try delegating some tasks to others in the household so you don’t take on too much responsibility.

Freckles are a common skin condition

Freckles are very common on light-skinned people. They form from exposure to the sun.

Whether it’s a light smattering of spots over the bridge of a person’s nose or tiny spots covering his or her arms and legs, freckles are a reality for thousands of people.

Despite their prevalence, many people are unsure just why freckles form or who is most likely to have them on their bodies.

Freckles are spots on the skin that are produced from concentrations of melanin, which is the pigment in the skin that gives it its color. Freckles generally show up on people who have fair skin. Melanin is derived from the amino acid tyrosine, which helps with protein production in the

body. Melanin is usually a black-brown shade and is produced as a defense against the harmful UV rays of the sun.

In the body, the melanocortin 1 receptor on the MC1R gene helps produce melanin that tans the body. Variants of the MC1R gene will lead to freckles. Melanin is produced in two types:pheomelanin and eumelanin. Individuals who primarily produce pheomelanin tend to have freckles. Freckles also are largely genetic, and some identical twins may have similar freckle patterns.

There are two basic forms of freckles. These include simple freckles and sunburn freckles. Both are made more prominent by exposure to the sun.

Simple freckles are usually small, tan and round.

Sunburn freckles are larger, darker and more irregular in shape. You’ll find them usually on the upper back and shoulders. Lentigines is the medical term for darker sunburn freckles that do not tend to fade in the winter.

Freckles, although most common on the face, can occur anywhere on the body that is repeatedly exposed to sun. While freckles are not harmful and rarely lead to skin

cancer, people who have freckles are at a higher risk for other skin conditions, which in turn may increase their risk of skin cancer.

That’s because a person with the pheomelanin type of melanin has a lower concentration of photoprotective melanin that guards against the harmful effects of UV radiation. People with freckles tend to burn more easily and need to rely on sunscreen and covering their skin to prevent damage.

When freckles are present, they may fade when the skin gets less exposure to the sun.

But some freckles will remain. Those who are embarrassed by freckles can be diligent about covering up in the sun.

There are various topical creams that can bleach freckles and lighten them over time. There also are dermatological laser treatments to lighten or eliminate freckles.

Freckles are a skin condition primarly for those of light skin who are exposed to sunlight. They are largely hereditary and rarely harmful. Those who have concerns about the appearance of freckles can visit a dermatologist to discuss their options.

Women having babies today are better educated than ever and prefer to make choices concerning their labor and birth. Childbirth classes are the ideal source for preparation, but often women utilize the internet to get answers to their questions.

“Dr. Google” can be intimidating, to say the least, and the information provided may not be right for a particular woman or her baby. The Physicians and Certified Nurse-Midwives of Covington Women’s Health Specialists are always pleased when patients are educated and prepare themselves for their upcoming deliveries, and we take the time to guide women to appropriate information sources and to answer their questions.

While there are many “hot topics” in Obstetrics, one that many women ask about is Cesarean section delivery. While it is agreed that normal vaginal delivery is the preferred choice for mother and baby, sometimes interventions or even a surgical birth may be indicated or chosen for maternal or fetal reasons. Traditional Cesarean delivery tends to isolate the mother from her partner and from her newborn. When baby is delivered, it is placed in a warmer, usually out of sight of the mother, and is quickly removed from the room to the nursery or recovery room. Mom may get a quick peek and a kiss, but won’t see the baby again until she gets to recovery or even to her

postpartum room hours later. And while most hospitals do permit a support person to accompany the woman to the operating room, that person most often is required to leave when the baby leaves the OR. There is so much evidence about the importance of early bonding, skin-toskin time and early breastfeeding for newborns and parents that we must support this. Without the opportunity for that emotional and physical bonding to occur, it may negatively impact breastfeeding and parental behaviors.

In an emergency, delivering the baby quickly and making sure mom and baby are safe is paramount.

Bonding will occur later, and lots of help will be given for breastfeeding. However, in non-emergent Cesarean deliveries, the Physicians and Midwives at Covington Women’s Health Specialists encourage moms to make choices concerning their delivery environment and how the baby is managed by offering FamilyCentered Cesareans at Piedmont Newton Hospital Labor and Delivery.

Women may bring music, the operating room lights may be dimmed (the surgical lights do remain on), and when the baby is about to be delivered, the drape may be lowered so mom and her support person can watch as baby is born! The cord is left to pulsate so baby gets its cord blood, and sometimes dad gets to cut the cord. The baby may then be passed to a Nurse or Midwife and dried briefly, then placed on mom’s chest for the duration of the surgery so she and dad (or her support person) can enjoy bonding with that new little person. The entire care team celebrates the miracle of birth with the parents! When the surgery is complete, mom, partner and baby are moved to the recovery room

where further bonding and initiation of breastfeeding will occur. FamilyCentered Cesarean, with its focus on early bonding, skin-to-skin contact, and breastfeeding, is not routinely used with preterm birth, emergency deliveries, or in cases where the baby is at high risk or not breathing normally after delivery.

Recommended immunizations for those age 50+ R DiD you outine immunizations can keep people safe and healthy. Certain vaccinations can prevent diseases from producing symptoms, while others can lessen the duration of an illness or make conditions less severe.

Vaccination schedules become a way of life for parents to young children.

But vaccinations aren’t just for kids, and adults should keep tabs on their immunization histories to ensure they’re up-to-date with vaccinations for their particular age group and lifestyle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the elderly are more likely to die of a vaccine-preventable disease than other age groups. The immune system begins to decline as we age, so the body can benefit from the diseasefighting boost provided by vaccinations. Individuals at any age should discuss

immunizations with their doctors, but it’s a particularly important conversation for those age 50 and older.

Vaccine schedules and recommendations may vary depending on where a person lives, but the following immunization recommendations are offered courtesy of the CDC.

INFLUENZA: An annual flu shot can help prevent the nearly 36,000 deaths that occur due to flu each year in the United States. The flu vaccine is designed to combat the current strain of flu, so it is recommended anytime between September to March, which is the prime flu season.

People age 50 and older should opt for the injection rather than the nasal form of the vaccine.

TDAP: This vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis and is especially necessary for people who have close contact with young infants.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, can be passed on to youngsters and make them very ill. If you’ve never received a Tdap

vaccine, the CDC suggests getting it at least once.

Individual tetanus boosters should be received every 10 years.

PNEUMOCOCCAL: Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the pneumococcus bacteria. It can cause pneumonia, blood infection, ear infections, and even bacterial meningitis. This vaccine is given to adults age 65 and older or to younger adults at their physicians’ discretion.

HEPATITIS A: Individuals with medical, occupational or lifestyle conditions, such as healthcare workers or people with chronic liver disease, may need a twodose series of the hepatitis A vaccine.

Adults who are avid travelers to various parts of the world that may bring them in contact with animals or people who do not receive the same course of immunizations may need additional vaccines.

Speak with a doctor about which immunizations are recommended before travel.

Though vaccines are usually associated with childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations as they age. Even those who received immunizations as youngsters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifically to the over 50 crowd. Seniors are urged to talk to their doctors about certain vaccines.

In addition to flu shots, there are vaccinations that can help prevent other illnesses, such as pertussis (whooping cough), shingles, diphtheria/tetanus, and pneumonia. Shingles is a condition that affects those who had chickenpox as children, and can be quite painful. A vaccination is an easy way to avoid it. Many local pharmacies now offer on-site immunizations, saving people a trip to the doctor's office.

“I miss my grandma.”

I was talking to a friend after her father had recently died. She told me of how, at his funeral, she couldn’t stop thinking of her grandmother, who had died 15 years earlier.

Grief can be like this—surprising and sneaky, each loss building on the next.

In the conversation with my friend, I was reminded of a metaphor used to describe the grief of trauma and loss used by a Pastoral Care professor of mine years ago. “Your losses are held together like a pearl necklace, or a strand of beads. Each one is connected. You can’t touch one without its movement rippling through all the others. However, if you can imagine touching each bead lightly—polishing it gently—

His description of the way all of our losses are connected is a beautiful way to reinvent the pain of bereavement. In experiencing loss, it is normal to re-grieve older losses. Due to circumstance, sometimes we aren’t able to grieve a loss as it happens, so find ourselves in mourning when we are faced with a new loss much later.

The book, Grief Therapy, describes it this way: “Sometimes your grief can be so overwhelming because it encompasses the grieving you never did for other, earlier losses in your life. Let yourself feel the pain of those losses too.”

As you grieve your most recent loss, I hope that you give yourself the space to reflect on whatever emotions and memories may come up for you, and the grace to treat yourself gently.
