Dr. Super opens new dermatology practice in Conyers

By Beth Slaughter Sexton Staff Correspondent he was the kid in the emergency room who never cried because she was too engaged watching the doctors stitch up her latest accident. Politely asking them to not block her view, this child wanted to know everything the ER doctors were doing and peppered them with what she says were “a 1,000 questions.”

So it came as no surprise when planning her life's future, this young girl would someday become Dr. Dione Marcus Super, M.D. A dermatologist practicing for more than a decade in Rockdale and Newton counties, Dr. Super just opened her own dermatology practice in Conyers.

“It's exciting and I'm really busy,” she said. “It’s truly a dream come true."

With a last name that means first rate and top notch, the doctor has the perfect name to place on her office shingle—Super Dermatology. Her patients have shared a few good-natured comments, such as “I always knew you were super!”

The name came with the man she married two years ago.

“It took a long time to find the perfect guy,” the doctor said. “Marrying him gave me a name that means I have to live up to being super.”

Urogynecology and Gynecology Care

E

very day, millions of women silently wrestle with issues that cause untold embarrassment, inconvenience and discomfort. While many people think that urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are uncommon issues, affecting only a small number of elderly or disabled women, the truth is that these issues are remarkably common.

In fact, data from Yale University shows that about 35% of women who visit their gynecologist’s office for routine care have urinary incontinence (UI), while 40% experience moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse.

Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together.

And, indeed, pelvic floor conditions are more common than hypertension, depression, or diabetes in women.

Yet, if you’re like many women, seeking help for these conditions can be a source of embarrassment or fear - or even hopelessness. The stigma of Ul and other pelvic floor conditions is enough to keep many women from admitting their concerns, even to their own physicians. And living with these conditions can be devastating psychologically, as well as socially, emotionally and physically. The good news is that, while problems like

these are common, they aren’t considered normal or inevitable, regardless of age or health, and many effective forms of treatment are available.

The field of urogynecology is a specialized area of both urology and gynecology that focuses on treating women who are faced with these sensitive issues. Urogynecologists receive extensive training in the treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, as well as the muscles and connective tissue that support these organs.

Treatment for incontinence and prolapse - protrusion of the bladder or vagina from your body - can be either non-surgical or surgical. The first step in getting help is to see a physician who has experience treating these types of conditions and learn about what may be causing your problem. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and medical history, conduct a physical exam, and discuss with you which tests are appropriate.

Your physical exam may reveal signs of medical conditions that can cause incontinence, like treatable blockages from bowel or pelvic growths. Tests may include an ultrasound, cystoscopy (using a tiny camera to see inside your urethra and bladder), a urinalysis, and urodynamics to measure pressure in the bladder and the flow of urine.

Depending upon your diagnosis, the severity of your symptoms and your overall

health, your physician may recommend conservative, nonsurgical therapies as the first approach to treat your pelvic floor disorder. These include medications, pelvic muscle exercise, lifestyle and dietary modifications, use of a vaginal support device called a pessary, and biofeedback.

If your condition doesn’t improve, your doctor may suggest surgery. Many of the available surgical procedures for incontinence and prolapse are minimally invasive, including some robotic-assisted surgeries that may offer a more effective treatment option. Using tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, your surgeon can operate with greater precision and control, so your recovery is faster and less painful, with a better clinical outcome.

These are just some of the procedures your doctor may consider to treat your incontinence or prolapse.

Men with BRCA mutations have increased cancer risks, too Men with BRCA mutations, particularly BRCA2, have an increased risk for developing breast cancer and a more aggressive form of prostate cancer, as well as pancreatic cancer.

In fact, 50 percent of all BRCA mutation carriers are men and many do not know it.

About 12 percent of men with metastatic prostate cancer — one in nine— carry an inherited mutation, a recent New England Journal of Medicine study found. This is a higher rate than the percentage of women with breast cancer who carry a BRCA mutation. Another recent study found that African-American men with prostate cancer had significantly higher chances of carrying a BRCA mutation than patients with other ancestries.

Considering genetic testing So when should men consider genetic

counseling and testing? Men and women with family histories that include early-onset breast cancer or ovarian cancer are good candidates. In addition, men with an aggressive form of prostate cancer are also appropriate for referral to genetics, especially if they have breast or ovarian cancer in their family.

Pancreatic cancer can affect men and women and most are not hereditary, but this type of cancer within a family history that includes breast, ovarian and/or prostate cancer could also be clues to a hereditary risk.

If a man is diagnosed with breast cancer, regardless of his age, he and his close relatives are also good candidates for genetic counseling and testing.

Men who pursue genetic testing are helping their entire family, especially their children. That’s because a woman who inherits a BRCA mutation from her

father faces the same high risks for breast (up to 70 percent) and ovarian cancer (up to 40 percent) as a woman who inherits BRCA mutations from her mother. Men can also pass these mutations on to their sons.

It is a common misconception that only the family history of “female cancers” matters when it is on the maternal side. Knowing the maternal and paternal family histories are important and can save lives.

Anyone concerned about their family history can ask their doctor about seeing a genetic counselor. Many people

Georgia family opens newest senior living community in Covington

— The Oaks at Ashton Hills

N

elson Salabarria Sr. once found himself in the same spot many baby boomers find themselves today.

He was faced with the difficult decision on how to care for his frail and aging mother who had developed Alzheimer’s disease.

While living in Florida at the time, where there has long been a large elderly population, Salabarria said his options were few. He could either place her in a nursing home or a small personal care home with limited security for patients who wander.

The dilemma inspired Salabarria to dream about building a community where, as he put it, “seniors could live with dignity and respect.”

A real estate developer, Salabarria moved to Georgia and following his retirement, he was ready to make his dream a reality. He asked his son Alex to leave Florida and move to Atlanta where Alex’s brothers and sisters lived and where the family would begin to change the landscape of senior living.

When the Oaks at Ashton Hills opens in Covington this September, it will be the latest senior living property the Salabarria family has opened in Georgia. Located adja-

cent to Ashton Hills Golf Club and near Piedmont Newton Hospital, Oaks at Ashton Hills is a senior assisted living and memory care community. In the past two decades, the family has opened Oaks communities in Woodstock, Canton, Cumming, Pooler, Hoschton, Leesburg, Brunswick, Dublin and Columbus.

Still being constructed, sales are under way for the Covington property featuring the latest stateof-the art amenities and services to help seniors maintain their independent lifestyle. With one- and two-bedroom apartments, there will also be studio apartments and Horizon apartments that offer a different design for the one-bedroom layout.

Nelson’s son Alex is now chief executive officer of the company, which opened its first senior living community in 1998 in Woodstock.

Alex’s step-daughter, Therese Boutwell is community relations director for the company and said the Salabarrias’ senior living communities are noted for their commitment to focusing on a person-centered lifestyle. Such a concept moves away from an overly structured approach to allow a lifestyle that encourages independence and personal choice for the unique needs and desires of each resident.

When completed, Oaks at Ashton Hills will have space for 86 residents. It will offer such amenities as 24-hour access to staff with state-ofthe-art emergency call and smoke and fire systems; assistance with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, dressing and eating; three nutritious meals and two snacks daily; housekeeping and laundry services; dental and podiatrist services; private studio apartments with all utilities (excluding phone and cable); free Wi-Fi; scheduled transportation to shopping and banking; social, educational, spiritual and recreational programs; medication supervision and reminders and regular monitoring for general health and well-being, including blood pressure, weight and nutritional status checks with quarterly reports to family.

Through its partnership with Genesis Rehabilitation, residents are able to get on-site physical, occupa-

tional and speech therapy services.

Don’t let the Upcoming Health Care Crisis Be a Burden to You and Your Family….

have become especially concerned over the last few months with the issues surrounding clients and their families regarding their care issues as they get older. According to recent studies, the life expectancy after age 65 is now 18.6 years.

Wow, this is quite a change from 1965 when the average male was anticipated to live only three more years after reaching age 65! From 2015 to 2055, the number of people aged 85 and older will almost triple to over 18 million.

As people live longer these days, there is of course a greater chance that they will need help due to chronic conditions. About 70% of people who reach age 65 are expected to need some form of long-term care at least once in their lifetime. With these numbers in mind, there is no doubt that this will be a financial, emotional and physical struggle for many families. It reinforces my commitment to promote long term care insurance coverage. Very often I get a call from a client or their son or daughter; and it’s a relief to be able to re-assure them that, yes, there is a long term care policy in place that will chip in and help with this important care. Their Mom or Dad thought ahead to protect not only themselves in this area; but also to lessen any burden on their children down the road. These calls happen usually when Mom or Dad have had that stroke, diagnosed with

Parkinson, Alzheimer’s/dementia or other debilitating sickness, or just “growing old” and needing more substantial help. It burdens my heart though when I get these calls and I have to say “No”, we talked about it, but they did not get that coverage.

I never will forget a call from a daughter who said “I found your business card in Mother’s things, did she have long term care coverage with you?” I vividly remember having had the conversation and writing up the policy application and submitting it; and then

a few days later getting a phone call from the client saying, “I don’t think I’ll get it, my daughter (the one I was talking to at the time on the phone) said “Don’t worry Mom, We’ll never put you in the nursing home, we’re here to take care of you”; so she though that would happen and no need for the coverage. I knew the answer, before I even asked, “Where is your Mother now?” She said, “Mom had had a stroke and we put her in the nursing home.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her what her Mother had said to me prior

arm weather invites all types of relaxing thoughts and behaviors. People embrace various ways of relaxing in the summer, from choosing lightweight clothes to spending more time on recreational pursuits to streamlining certain beauty practices.

Summer beauty routines may require minor changes to accommodate some of the environmental effects of hot weather and humidity. Consider the following tips to look and feel your best when the mercury rises.

· TRY TINTED MOISTURIZER. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

· GET A HEALTHIER GLOW. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are at their strongest. · DON'T FIGHT THE ELEMENTS.

Many people go to great lengths to change what nature gave them. For example, those with curly hair will spend hours with straightening irons or special serums. Try to embrace the elements and your natural hair texture this summer. Use a product to keep frizz away and let hair air dry.

One way to pursue hospice services is to directly contact the patient’s physician and discuss the needs of your loved one. A second option is to directly contact a hospice of your choice and inquire about hospice services. A hospice representative can help answer questions and review your needs and how they can be met by the hospice team. They can also offer to contact the physi-

hen the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, itÕs important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun wonÕt take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

SAFETY

• KNOW THE RISKS OF UV EXPOSURE. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage.

• USE ONLY BROAD-SPECTRUM SPF SUNSCREEN. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well.

UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating.

• KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATER-RESISTANT AND WATERPROOF SUNSCREENS. Manufacturers are no longer al-

lowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water.

• COVER UP WHENEVER POSSIBLE. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear widebrimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and lightcolored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF.

Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.

Should You Be Worried About

Frequent Heartburn?

I

t is common to experience a little heartburn after eating spicy foods or drinking alcohol. It may feel like chest pain or burning after eating, a sour taste in the back of the throat or hoarseness.

But suffering daily, long-lasting or frequent heartburn symptoms should not be ignored and may indicate a more serious condition.

As many as 15 million Americans suffer from daily heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This chronic but treatable condition refers to irritation and damage to the lining of the esophagus from

prolonged exposure to stomach acid. This damage occurs because of a weakening of the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach which allows acid to leak up into the esophagus.

Typical treatments for GERD may include medication to reduce stomach acid and simple lifestyle changes to help reduce the reflux symptoms – such as avoiding trigger foods, decreasing portion sizes, losing weight, quitting smoking, elevating the head of the bed, and not eating before bedtime.

For certain patients who have had chronic acid reflux, an upper

endoscopy may be recommended to assess severity and to uncover any pre-cancerous changes.

If GERD is left untreated or unmonitored for a long period of time, it can result in a condition called Barrett’s esophagus which can progress to cancer.

Barrett’s esophagus is a disorder in which the inflamed, acid-damaged cells in the lining of the lower esophagus change to resemble those found in the stomach. As a result of this transformation, Barrett’s patients have an increased risk for esophageal cancer.

Enjoy your season in the sun and still play it safe As children, summertime meant endless outdoor fun. As teens, it meant sunbathing with baby oil, to ensure the darkest tan.

Fast-forward to adulthood, where a thinning ozone layer and a higher incidence of skin cancer have made us wary of enjoying sunlight. But while cancer is a serious concern, you don't have to become a summer shut-in.

Use these tips to help you safely enjoy your season in the sun.

Avoid 10 to 4

For years, health experts and Atlanta meteorologists alike have warned us to stay indoors during the heat of the day. Avoid the peak hours of the sun. Its rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to schedule outdoor activities around those times.

Slather On the Sunscreen

Liberally apply sunscreen about 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. Because the sun emits two types of harmful rays-UVA and UVB-your sunscreen should provide "broad-

spectrum" protection against both, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher.

Reapply, Reapply, Reapply Reapplying sunscreen may be the most neglected step in the sun-safety regimen.

Don't just put it on and forget it. Sunscreen should be reapplied about every two hours while you're outdoors, and every 45 minutes if you're swimming.

Hats It! Head out with a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. Choose one with a wide brim at least three to four inches around for suitable coverage. The bucket and widebrimmed farmer's hats, in a lightweight straw or cotton twill, are two classic, stylish choices.

Seek Shade Seek shade, but do so with caution. While trees and umbrellas provide protection, you still need to protect yourself under them. The

sun's rays can scatter, penetrate and reflect to reach you.

Dress for the Occasion

Covering up in dark, tight-knit fabric is the best way to protect your skin, but it's no fun in the summer heat. Fortunately, some companies now make lightweight clothing with effective sun protection. These items bear an ultraviolet protection factor or UPF (think of it as an SPF for fabric) of 15 to 50 on their labels. Hand numbness — is it carpal tunnel syndrome?

E

veryone has had occasions when their hands have “fallen asleep” –it usually happens if someone has been laying on it wrong or something got wrapped around it too tight. However, prolonged or recurrent numbness is not normal.

There are many things that can cause persistent numbness in the hands: a pinched nerve in the neck; neuropathy related to diabetes, vitamin deficiency, or certain drugs; stroke; neurologic diseases; heart attack (particularly in women and diabetic patients); nerve injury; excessive swelling; or carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common causes of numbness in the hand. It can affect both men and women, especially as people get older, but tends to be more common in women. Despite popular perception, there has been no evidence that carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by repetitive motion at work, although, once one develops carpal tunnel syndrome, prolonged positioning of the wrist in a bent position can exacerbate the symptoms. In fact, the standard carpal tunnel patient is a middle aged housewife.

It is caused by pressure on a nerve that runs

through a tunnel in the wrist to reach the hand.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be commonly seen in pregnancy, due to fluid retention causing swelling around the nerve.

Symptoms often include numbness in the hand, often with an accompanying ache. The numbness may range from just abnormal sensation at the fingers, to pins and needles, to dense numbness with inability to feel objects. It can be intermittent or constant, but is usually worse at night. Frequent complaints include nighttime awakenings or waking in the morning with the hands numb. It can be worsened with daily activities which require holding the hand in certain positions for prolonged periods of time, including driving, talking on a phone, doing one’s hair. More severe symptoms include constant numbness, clumsiness, weakness, or even visible muscle loss. These are more concerning signs, and should prompt one to seek medical attention.

Simple treatments for milder cases involve obtaining a wrist brace that keeps the wrist from bending. This should be worn at night, although it can be worn during the day as well. If this fails to relieve symptoms after several weeks, or if you

have any of the concerning symptoms noted above, seek medical attention. Your physician may perform a clinical exam or run some tests to help determine if this is indeed a carpal tunnel syndrome. Most carpal tunnel syndromes are reversible; however, waiting until the condition is severe may result in permanent, irreversible nerve damage. The surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome is a small, quick procedure, which can be easily performed at an outpatient surgical center. form of cancer that develops in the pigment-making cells of the skin known as the melanocytes, melanoma is a relatively rare form of skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is more dangerous than basal and squamous cell skin cancers, which are the most common types of the disease, because it is likely to metastasize if not detected early.

No one is invulnerable to the potential threat posed by melanoma, though some people are at greater risk of the disease than others. The following are some of the risk factors for melanoma, courtesy of the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Sun exposure Exposure to the sun can increase a person's risk factor for various forms of skin cancer, including melanoma. The SCF notes that blistering sunburns suffered in early childhood especially increase a person's risk of developing melanoma, though sunburns later in life also can increase that risk. In addition, people who live in places that get substantial sunlight, such as Florida and Hawaii, tend to develop more skin cancers than people who live in areas with less sunlight. Tanning booths

and beds also increase exposure to ultraviolet rays, which increase one's melanoma risk.

Moles The more moles a person has on his or her skin, the greater his or her risk for melanoma.

There are two types of moles: normal moles and atypical moles. Normal moles are small, brown blemishes or beauty marks that appear in the first few decades of life. Many people develop such moles. Atypical moles known as "dysplastic nevi" can be precursors to melanoma, and people with such moles are at greater risk of developing the disease. It can be difficult to distinguish between normal and atypical moles, though the SCF notes that atypical moles that itch, bleed, crust, ooze, swell, or are elevated from the skin might be in particular danger of becoming melanomas.

Atypical moles that are bluish-black in color or become persisting open sores are also at greater risk of becoming melanomas.

Skin type People with fair skin are at greater risk of various types of skin cancers, including melanomas. Such is also the case for people with light-colored hair and eyes.

Weakened immune system People whose immune systems have been compromised are at greater risk of developing melanoma than those whose immune systems are working at full strength. Chemotherapy, organ transplant surgery, excessive exposure to the sun, and diseases such as HIV/AIDS can weaken the immune system.

Family history The SCF notes that roughly 10 percent of people diagnosed with melanoma have a family member who also has been diagnosed.

People whose mother, father, siblings or children have developed melanoma are considered to be in families that are prone to melanoma. In fact, each person with a firstdegree relative who has been diagnosed with melanoma has a 50 percent greater chance of developing the disease than someone with no such family connection.

Melanoma is a potentially deadly form of skin cancer. People with a family history of the disease or those who spend substantial time in the sun should be especially vigilant about protecting their skin.

Reduce your lung cancer risk

By Dr. John E. Moore Atlanta Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Associates There’s no sugarcoating this. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 154,000 people will die from lung cancer in 2018. That’s more than the next three most common cancers combined (colon, breast and prostate).

Despite formidable research proving that smoking is responsible for more than 80 percent of all lung cancers, approximately 16 percent of adults (age 18 and up) continue to smoke. Former smokers make up 60 percent of diagnosed lung cancers, while 20 percent are current smokers and 20 percent have never smoked (secondhand smoke).

However, while smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer, additional offenders include genetic factors, air pollution, radon and occupational

exposure through asbestos and certain chemicals and variables.

If you experience chest pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty breathing or new-onset wheezing, or are coughing up blood, see a physician right away. While these symptoms often are caused by something much simpler than cancer, if it is lung cancer, getting treatment right away may mean a better outcome.

Discuss symptoms or health changes with your doctor and follow up on your doctor’s recommendations for screening and smoking cessation to ensure you stay cancer free.

Why are there such high death rates from lung cancer? The disease is hard to detect because it does not cause symptoms in its early stages.

Approximately 85 percent of patients are diagnosed with late-stage disease.

However, when found early, lung cancer is actually highly curable.

Screening of high-risk patients with low-dose-radiation CT can be lifesaving.

Studies have shown that if lung cancer is diagnosed and removed when it is less than 1 centimeter in size survival is greater than 90 percent. Medicare and some insurance companies will cover low-dose CT scans as a screening tool.

There also are many new advances in the field of lung cancer treatment. Most lung cancer resections are performed either robotically or thoracoscopically (VATS). Immunotherapy and targeted chemotherapy agents tailored for specific tumors offer greater hope in the treatment of advanced lung cancer.

Stereotactic-targeted radiotherapy provides much better results than standard radiation.

Lung cancer screening will lead to early detection of lung cancer and therefore the application of some of these newer treatments.

The average age of someone diagnosed with lung cancer is 70. If you are a smoker or former smoker, you are generally at the highest risk for developing lung cancer. It is vital to stop

smoking to reduce your cancer risk.

Even after you have been smoking for many years, stopping smoking will improve your overall health. Within 20 minutes after quitting, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. Within two weeks to three months, your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

Studies have shown that even people with an inoperable lung cancer live longer if they quit smoking when they are diagnosed. Participating in a group smoking cessation program improves your chances of quitting and remaining a nonsmoker. Learn about cataracts to see more clearly Many people take their vision for granted until a problem arises that affects their ability to see. While certain conditions may occur suddenly, others develop more gradually and may not even be noticeable until the problem has progressed significantly.

Cataracts is a common vision problem that is often associated with aging. The National Eye Institute says that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Prevent Blindness America says there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined. The American Optometric Association defines a cataract as a cloudy or opaque area

in the normally clear lens of the eye.

Depending on its size, cataracts can interfere with normal vision. They typically occur in people over the age of 55.

A cataract can be present in one or both eyes. The lens is responsible for helping to focus light or an image on the retina. In a healthy lens, fluid and protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, offers NEI. However, as one ages, the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. Over time, this clouding may grow. Researchers also suspect there are other causes to cataracts, such as smoking or diabetes. In addition, wear and tear on the lens can develop into cataract clouding. Significant alcohol consumption, UV radiation, eye surgery,

and high myopia also may contribute to cataract formation.

All About Vision says the types of cataracts include: • Subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens; • Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens; and • Cortical cataract, which starts as white opacities in the periphery of the lens and then grows inward.

The Mayo Clinic advises that there are no known methods to prevent cataracts or slow their progression. But choosing a healthy diet full of antioxidants, quitting bad habits like smoking, managing diabetes, and having regular eye examinations can help. It’s also

a good idea to wear sunglasses that block against UVA and UVB light when outdoors.

Cataracts can cause blurring of vision and even make it difficult to see in bright conditions. Colors may seem faded, night vision may be adversely affected and glare may be problematic. The AOA says that early cataracts typically are not treated and changes to prescriptions may provide temporary visual improvement. If a cataract progresses to the point that it affects one’s ability to perform everyday tasks, surgery in which an artificial lens replaces the natural lens may be necessary.
