In 1949 Howard and Vivian Barnes, a year after starting their lives together, opened Conyers Jewelers. Mr. Barnes, a trained watchmaker, ran the store along with his mother, Mrs. Ruby Thompson Barnes. Mrs. Vivian Barnes worked in Atlanta until 1967 when she joined Howard in the daily running of the store. In 1990 their granddaughter Teri Tidwell Stanley, a trained gemologist and jeweler, joined the team. Today this store is the oldest continuous business in the City of Conyers.

Dear Friends, More than 40 years ago, Jack and Barbara Morgan, our beloved parents, took a big leap, bought a cow pasture on Pace Street beside Dried Indian Creek and began building Morgan Plaza.

Jack hauled dirt from the family farm east of town to form the foundation on which the original building would stand. He would oversee the construction of other phases over the years. Barbara dealt with the finances and ultimately became the rent collector, going dutifully from door-to-door with a gentle spirit still remembered by long-time tenants.

They believed in Morgan Plaza as a place for small business owners to set up shop and earn a good living. Their own business, an OTASCO store, was located there initially. Some tenants remain there after decades. A variety of shops and services draw a devoted base of shoppers and clients.

Morgan Plaza is located on the vital corridor that runs between Highway 278 and the Downtown Square. Its easy ingress and egress make it attractive for customers and tenants alike. Morgan Plaza, in fact, set the stage for the current status of development along Pace Street, thanks to Jack and Barbara Morgan.
