BOARDWALK BEAUTIFIED Hooray! New York City Parks surprised us by putting the Top 30 photos from The Rockaway Times Photo Contest on the boardwalk a few days earlier than expected. Turned out to be perfect timing because the warm weather last weekend brought out big crowds which got to see the fantastic photos that make Rockaway even more beautiful. In addition to the Top 30, five Honorable Mention photos adorn the railing at the ferry dock. The photos, amazing to begin with, are even more amazing when made poster-sized. Check them out at Beach 95th Street.

The Rockaway Times Summer Guide: THE MAGIC IS BACK The 2021 Summer Guide has arrived! Last year’s cover featured Melanie Frances Homsey photographed by her mom, Margie Daly. It was the perfect photo for the time as Melanie was captured, on her bike on the boardwalk, smartly dressed including the all-important face covering. This year has a parental connection as well but it’s a different vibe altogether. We think this great photo of magician, Wesley Chimilio, taken by his father, Mike O’Donnell, not only makes us smile but reminds us that Rockaway is magical and everything about this coming summer says: The Magic Is Back! Mike’s photo is also one of The Top 30 in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest and can be seen on the boardwalk with other finalists.

Picking the cover was as hard as picking The Top 30 as we received so many great shots that just say: Rockaway! This is the seventh year in a row we’ve produced The Summer Guide and we get to use the old expression; it’s back by popular demand! As usual, it’s chock full of great information about the peninsula and enhanced by contributions from staff, guest writers and photographers. We will be distributing The Summer Guide, also known as Rockaway’s Summer Magazine, from May 27 through the 4th of July. You can pick up a copy at many of the businesses that advertise and we’ll stock the orange newsstands over the next several weeks.

Memorial Day Ceremonies Set for Monday While enjoying the beach and barbecues this weekend, don’t forget the reason Memorial Day is celebrated—to honor those armed forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country. One way to do so is by attending the local Memorial Day events. This year’s Rockaway Memorial Day Parade on May 31 is once again cancelled due to Covid-19, but the ceremonies will continue. “The Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 of the American Legion and Auxiliary will be holding its Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 31,” Parade Committee Chairman Jim Trainor said. “Due to an abundance of caution, there will be no parade. Instead, starting at 11 a.m., we will meet at the Four Chaplain’s Monument on Beach

129th street for a brief ceremony and wreath laying. Then we reassemble at Memorial Circle at 11:30 a.m. for our ceremony and wreath laying. We will then reassemble at The Doughboy and Doughgirl Monuments at Beach 95th Street for our final ceremony. At all the locations that we are holding our ceremonies we request that all wear masks and social distance. “This is a day of remembrance for our fallen comrades that we never forget their sacrifice for America. These young men and women answered the call when their country called on them and made the ultimate sacrifice for America. We look forward to next year when hopefully we will be permitted to honor the day like we had before Covid.”

Ryan Rudden Hockey Tournament a Win All Around By Katie McFadden

The Annual Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament was a big success. About eight teams took to the Beach 108th hockey rink on a hot, sunny Saturday, May 22, to play in memory of Ryan Rudden and to raise money for a special local girl in need. They may have been competing, but it was all for a good cause. Every player bore Rudden’s name and number 11 on the back of their jerseys as they carried on the memory of the young man who tragically died in a car crash in 2002. The teams battled it out as locals stopped by to watch the action, enjoy some food and music and help raise money for Olivia Benedetto, a 13-yearold Roxbury girl left unable to walk after a skiing accident. “My family and I can’t thank everyone

enough for their generous donations, continued support and presence this weekend for our Annual Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament,” Ryan Rudden’s sister, Rickielynne Rudden said. “Grateful for our community and being able to honor my brother every year with a sport that always brought a smile to his face and has made friends more like family.” Rickielynne Rudden thanked Billy Burns, Vinny Smith and Bobby Keane for getting the

teams together. After several rounds, a team named Ronna took home the win. She also thanked All American Bagel and Barista, Boardwalk Bagels, RBQ, the RIBs, Johnny Cs Tees, NYCountry Swag and On the Fly for their food and jersey donations to help make the tournament a success. To raise funds, they held a 50/50 which was sold out and successfully raised $13,000 for the winner and the Benedetto family.

***** Here’s to a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend for all. And please take time to remember those who died while serving in the Armed Forces. ***** Maureen Walsh, one of the stewards of Memorial Circle in Rockaway Park, alerted us to a missing marker, a concrete block with a brass plaque indicating the names and branch of service of the fallen, etc. Apparently when trees were planted, one went missing. Know anything about it? Contact Maureen (no questions asked!) at 347731-0285. ***** The official beach opening will occur at Beach 17th Street and the boardwalk on Friday, May 28, at 2:15 p.m. Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver or a surrogate will declare the beaches

open and that means lifeguards begin summer duty and the concessions open officially. ***** The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is out! The summer magazine is 112 pages and, just like the weekly paper, it’s free. Big shout out to The RT staff and contributors who work so hard to make The Guide the must-have Rockaway publication. And we’re thrilled so many local businesses are in again. The Guide is almost like an old-fashioned yellow pages. People keep The Guide and can look up local businesses all year. Hmmm...maybe we’ll do another for Labor Day…. ***** Oh, and we will be distributing The Guide from now through the 4th of July, so don’t worry, you’ll get a copy. ***** Another sign that beach season is upon us is the installation of the Top 30 photos from The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. NYC Parks surprised us when they installed the photos a few days early. Kudos to the crew

***** Looks like a new beer garden is about to sprout. Tap That is the name of the place setting up at Beach 111th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Their website says it’s “Brought to you by the co-founder of Brooklyn's The Burger Bistro – John Agnello brings over thirty five years of experience as a chef/owner to Rockaway Beach with his newest culinary venture.” With “pour my beer” technology, guests will be able to pour their own beer and wine. The hope is to get the place opened by Labor Day weekend. ***** B-ball is back. The Summer Classic, that is. The St. Francis schoolyard is hoop heaven for hundreds of players (and spectators) from June through August. The High Exalted Mystic Ruler of The Classic is Keith Bugsy Goldberg and he tells us that registration this year for the Grammar School and High School Divisions will only be for one week, May 24-May 31. who do the work! The photos, already amazing, are all the more amazing when enlarged to poster-size. Check them out around Beach 95th Street and get a look at five Honorable Mention photos that adorn the ferry dock. ***** This is quite the price tag. The long-neglected Chai Home on the beachfront of Beach 125th is up for sale through BHHS Laffey International Realty. It could be yours for just…$10,990,000. ***** Statistics show Far Rockaway is really lagging in the percentage of people who have been vaccinated. Just 29% of people living in 11691 have had at least one vaccine shot. It’s the lowest percentage in the entire city. The overall city average is 49%. On the other end of the peninsula, in the 11697 zip, 75% of residents have been vaccinated. The other Rockaway zip codes are all under the city average. Wine With Sue Brings the Party To Their No. 1 Fan By Katie McFadden

Usually Wine With Sue kicks off the summer season drawing big crowds while rocking out at the concessions. This time around, they put on a personal performance for a special birthday girl. Not everyone can get Wine With Sue to play in their own backyard but the popular local band wouldn’t miss an oppor-

tunity to make the day special for their number one fan—Kristine Caruso. On Saturday, May 22 the whole band, including lead singer John Burke, drummer Don Sautner, guitarist Mike Schmitt and bassist John Fabry, took to the stage in the Caruso’s backyard and brought the party to Kristine two days ahead of her 29th birthday. Kristine was previously fea-

tured in The Rockaway Times in 2014, when friends, family and the community contributed to a successful GoFundMe campaign to help install a chair lift in the Caruso home so Kristine could access her basement apartment. At age 17, Kristine was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia II, or SCA 2, a disease that impacts the central nervous system, and became wheelchair bound shortly after her 21st birthday as symptoms progressed. Kristine’s diagnosis has never stopped her positive attitude and bright smile, which was beaming all Saturday evening as she celebrated her Tiki-themed birthday with family, neighbors and friends as her favorite band played some of her favorite songs. One of those

favorites includes their cover of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers, which Kristine danced to with the help of her fiancé Kevin O’Connor. The party was also a special treat for Kristine’s mom, Linda, who shares the same birthday with her daughter. After blowing out candles on her cake, Wine With Sue posed for a few photos with Kristine. “We would do anything for our number one fan,” John Burke said.

ST. ROSE OF LIMA STUDENTS TAKE MATH TO THE BEACH The 7th-grade students of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy, took their math lesson outdoors last week. The students turned part of the beach into their math and ecology classroom for the day. “Students collected ecological data on shellfish for their statistics project. Using the skills actual ecologists use, the students were able to take their math class into

the real world. This was a wonderful chance to explore their local wildlife. The joys of working in the Rockaways,” Satti Marchan, Principal of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy, said. Along the way, the students found crabs, horseshoe crabs, and sand crabs with eggs. The 7th graders looked at actual mussels, found fish bones, and even discovered a shark egg.

Rock (Away) Art & A Day At The Beach By Dan Guarino

“Today is the day! The sun is shining and the weather is sweet,” organizer Kieran Mulvanerty posted to kick off her Let’s Make Some Rock(away) Art at the Beach on Sunday, May 23. The event brought some two dozen adults and children to gather shells, carve the sand, have a splash and get creative at the shore off Beach 105th Street. “My whole life I have always been drawn to art. I like to draw. I love photography, and I like to paint,” Mulvanerty noted. “And I am always trying to do stuff with the kids, break out the crayons and the markers.” So when she shared a Facebook post of people making mosaic-type rock art and 2530 people responded to it, she was inspired. That’s how Let’s Make Some Rock(away) Art at the Beach came to life.

As the day went on, friends, family, others, and even passersby stopped by to contribute, gather shells and sea glass or bring their own, take photos, join in and create designs of their own. The rippling Rockaway waves as they came in helped out by sculpting the sand, taking bits away and leaving watery pools behind. The afternoon was set to cap off with a planned release of monarch butterflies which hatched just in time the day before the event. “Ever since Covid,” Mulvanerty said, “people have been wanting to get out.” The event was “a way to bring people together as a community” and “get people to be creative, with no rules, just fun.” “The more the merrier.” Asked if he had fun, young Walker Casey replied, “Yep.” Pointing out a pattern of flourishes and designs he and others worked together on, he said “We spelled out ‘Rocka-

Editorial: City Council Candidate Says Commuters Need Help By Mike Scala

When I'm speaking to neighbors on the campaign trail, the issues of traffic, parking, tolls and speed cameras are often mentioned. Residents feel like a war on cars is being waged by the powers that be. They aren't wrong. If there was any doubt in my mind that a deliberate effort was being made to undermine drivers, it was removed during my tenure as counsel and legislative director in the State Senate. While questioning one of the individuals tasked with implementing the plan for Select Bus Service on Cross Bay and Woodhaven boulevards, I was plainly told lanes and left turns were being eliminated for the express purpose of frustrating drivers out of their vehicles. At a recent debate, a candidate for office stated the city

was in a transitional period from the era of cars. The endeavor to improve public transit is a laudable one. The Rockaways suffer from the worst commute times in New York City. We need all the help we can get. But living in a transportation desert, we also understand the importance of pursuing solutions that do not harm those of us who do rely on vehicular travel. That's why I've been such a strong advocate for the ferry and the QueensRail—or the former Rockaway Beach Line of the Long Island Rail Road. Both are upgrades that do not sacrifice roadway. In fact, they ease the burden of traffic by creating attractive alternatives rather than being punitive. Our campaign has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters because we know the way forward is a city that works for all of us. Most

CURRAN’S

agree that reducing vehicle emissions is an important environmental concern. The city currently uses technology to inundate drivers with fines in the false hope it will cause cars to vanish. A better plan is investing in smart traffic lights to adapt to conditions on the road in real time. In Pittsburgh, this system was found to curb engine idling time by 40 percent and travel time by 25 percent. If New York is to be seen as the world leader we envision it to be, we need to be known for being cutting edge and not the nanny state. Unfortunately, many politicians are too busy talking about "congestion pricing" to embrace innovation. These proposals call for tolls to be collected within the borough of Manhattan, again with the objective of taxing local travel. Sound familiar? We've been down this road—or should I

say, crossed this bridge—before. If we believe it is unjust to be charged to drive from Queens to Queens, we can't abide this regressive strategy elsewhere. It's time to demand better. This is not zero-sum game. The commonsense approach is to promote policy that benefits everyone. Instead of focusing on the war on cars, we should be waging the battle to improve the lives of all commuters. (Mike Scala is running for the City Council seat in District 32)

Hope for Olivia By Katie McFadden

Locals from Breezy Point to Rockaway are rallying around a young girl who could use some help. On February 16, Olivia Benedetto, a 13-yearold girl from Roxbury, had her life turned upside down after a skiing accident left her unable to walk. As Olivia goes through rehabilitation and her family is praying for a miracle and navigating ways to make her life as comfortable as possible, the community is doing what it can to help. Olivia, who goes by Liv, and is known as Livie to her family, is an impressive young girl. The eighth grade Scholars’ Academy honors student taught herself gymnastics in fourth grade, and with practice, perfected aerials. Olivia’s mom, Colleen Clancy says her daughter was always active from a young age. “She’s been like that since she was born. I couldn’t keep her in the bassinet. She was always trying to climb out,” Clancy said. As she undergoes rehabilitation at Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, NY, Olivia is doing all that she can to get back on her feet and fly again. “My goal is to walk again and do gymnastics,” she said. A skiing trip during winter break changed Olivia’s life forever. While Colleen stayed home with Olivia’s older brother, Nicky, Olivia, her older sister, Lexie and her dad, Nick Benedetto set out for Pennsylvania to hit the slopes. After a night of melting and then a deep freeze, the mountains were a bit more slippery than usual. Olivia was skiing on a ramp when she caught more air than she intended. “I started to lean backwards, and I just stopped and slammed on to the slope,” Olivia recalls. “I remember my back being in pain, but I was still able to move my legs. I remember my dad saying that it was just a bruise and a bunch of people asking me questions.” The young girl was transported to a hospital in Wilkes Barre, but they were unable to perform the surgery she

needed. She was then airlifted to Geisinger Hospital in Danville, PA where she had emergency spinal surgery the next morning for a T12-L1 fracture. “Her fracture was extremely severe, and it damaged her spinal cord,” Clancy said. After the surgery, Olivia was paralyzed from the chest down. After some time recovering in the hospital, Olivia was transferred to Blythedale, where she’s been undergoing rehabilitation to learn how to become more independent. The doctors predict she won’t be able to walk again. Yet, Olivia is ready to prove them wrong. “She’s been extremely optimistic and determined. She doesn’t care what they say. She just feels she’s going to walk again one day,” Clancy said. Olivia has made some strides in her rehabilitation, gaining movement up to her belly button from her chest. “She works her butt off and she’s really impressed the psychical therapist because she’s so strong. She can sit up, catheterize herself, dress herself and transfer herself from the bed to the chair,” Clancy said. With a positive attitude, Olivia has even become an inspiration to other patients at Blythedale, giving other kids pep talks through their struggles. “Some people don’t always think the most positive thoughts. It’s just not their mindset, so helping other people and putting a smile on their face makes me smile,” Olivia said. Despite her progress, Olivia’s doctors don’t have much more hope. “They don’t expect her to improve much more, but we’re not going to accept that,” Clancy said. “We’re going to try everything we can to help her. Personally, I don’t like to use ‘handicapped.’ I like to call her ‘handi-capable.’” Citing other scenarios of paralysis patients overcoming their prognosis, the Benedettos, who are parishioners of Blessed Trinity, are keeping the faith. “We’re truly waiting for science to catch up to faith,” Clancy said. “I pray every night for a miracle or some great news to happen. God is always with you and

with God, anything is possible,” Olivia added. Olivia is expected to return to Roxbury on Friday, May 28, but she won’t quite be going home. She will be unable to easily access her Roxbury bungalow, so she will be temporarily staying with her sister in a nearby home that was made available to her by a neighbor who lost their parents due to Covid. On top of an already difficult situation, the Benedettos have been hit with the reality of having to demolish and rebuild their home which they’ve had since 1994 and just finished paying the mortgage on last year. “We have to knock it down. Her bedroom is on the second floor and there’s no possible way to retrofit it. It’s so small and nothing would be accessible to her,” Clancy said. When that will take place, is still up in the air, but upon hearing the news of what happened to Olivia and what her family has to deal with, family, friends, neighbors and the Rockaway, Roxbury and Breezy Point communities have quickly come up with ways to ease the burden. Friends of the family started a GoFundMe to help the Benedettos as gas, tolls and food bills added up as they made daily trips to Pennsylvania and then Valhalla to visit Olivia. They’ve received large donations from The Graybeards, Blessed Trinity Parish and Colleen’s pastor from her childhood parish. Co-workers from Nick’s job in NYC Transit and Colleen’s job at the Breezy Point Hardware store have also contributed. Family friends then created and sold #LivieStrong t-shirts with lady bugs on them, a sign important to the family, as it reminds Colleen of her late father. Friends also started a 50/50 and a raffle for a fishing trip. Last Saturday, the Ryan Rudden Hockey tournament was

held to raise money for the family. On Sunday, May 30, Roxbury is hosting a cornhole tournament, which Olivia helped decorate a board for, and on Saturday, June 5, RBQ is hosting a mini Irish festival concert with proceeds going to the family. “It’s just unreal,” Clancy said. “This was totally unsolicited, they just started planning these things before we even got back to New York. People really care and it just reinforces the fact that there is truly no place like Roxbury, Breezy Point and Rockaway.” Olivia added, “I think it’s so amazing that so many people have decided to help my family and in this hard time, the fact that everyone is so positive for my situation makes me really happy. I’m grateful for that.” The only other thing the family asks is that people keep praying. “I believe in the power of prayer,” Clancy said. For more information on ways to help, email FriendsofOliviaBenedetto@gmail.com. For t-shirts, contact Lucia Mills at 917-620-9614. For 50/50 raffles that will be drawn on July 4, contact Jeanine Stathis (917869-3574) or Cindy Mangan (347-885-4613). From Rockaway to Broadway, Ginger Ladd Lands Big City Gig By Katie McFadden

Ginger Ladd, Rockaway’s resident drag queen, is going from Rockaway to Broadway, well… sort of. After a tumultuous year with the live entertainment industry shut down due to Covid, the queen has gotten her big break and is starting fresh with a new residency in Manhattan with Drag Diva Brunch. This past weekend, Ginger Ladd, who got her start in Rockaway, made her Drag Diva debut as the hostess of a Spice Girlsthemed drag brunch at City Winery in Manhattan. It was just the beginning of a big new gig with nationally recognized drag company Drag Diva. As part of the new residency, Ginger Ladd will alternate between hosting events at City Winery on Saturdays and the Hard Rock Café right in the heart of Times Square on Broadway on Sundays. The big gig comes after a roller coaster of a year for the Arverne by the Sea resident. Last year,

as the drag queen was starting to become recognized after relaunching her career, with residencies at Whit’s End, the Rockaway Brewing Company and locations in Brooklyn, often pairing up with DreamaBelle as the Rockaway Babes, her world was quickly turned upside down when Covid hit. The year started on a high note as Ginger Ladd and his husband, Mister Ladd, welcomed

At the same time, with bars and restaurants shut down due to the pandemic, live drag performances also came to an abrupt end. FROM ROCKAWAY TO BROADWAY Continued from Page 16 to his new son. And in that time, more hardship came. In April 2020, Ginger Ladd’s own father had a heart issue and was taken to the hospital. But his dad wasn’t out of the clear when he came home. His father had caught Covid and died due to its complications. “After my dad died and I wasn’t tattooing anymore, I found myself in a reflective time where I didn’t recognize my life anymore,” Ginger Ladd said. However, there wasn’t much time to grieve over such tremendous loss. Ginger Ladd had to do what he could to stay afloat. He picked himself up, put on the makeup and wig and kept Ginger Ladd alive by doing live virtual shows about three or four days a week on Instagram. From a live Rockaway Babes show to a gig with her husband called Rendezvous, and even a Ginger Ladd podcast where she would provide advice, the drag queen put in work. “In the last year, I

Page 17

THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 must’ve done 200 shows,” she said. She even found time to enter drag pageants, winning one, and applied for reality show, "RuPaul's Drag Race." While Ginger Ladd’s virtual shows would draw in anywhere from a dozen to 50 viewers, from locals to international fans, she had caught the eye of some very important people in the drag world. “I was in drag so much, constantly pushing out content, that it got the attention of a company that contacted me a few weeks ago and said, ‘We’ve been watching you,’” she said. That company turned out to be Drag Diva, a national drag queen show and talent management company. They presented an opportunity that sounded, well, questionable. “They contacted me and said ‘we believe you should be applying for a job we can’t tell you about. We haven’t signed on the dotted line and we can’t tell you what it is but take our word for it.’ You entertain the idea of someone out of the blue coming to you saying they have a once in a lifetime opportunity and you’re wondering if it involves

a Saudi Prince or a transfer of funds,” Ginger Ladd joked. “It sounds kind of crazy.” But she took a chance. Ginger Ladd applied for the job and spoke to general manager Brian Peeke. “I interviewed with him and it became immediately clear that this was a big deal,” she said. She interviewed on a Wednesday a few weeks ago and by that Friday she had signed the paperwork and learned just how big of a deal this new job was for a relative newcomer to the drag queen scene. Ginger Ladd is now the lead hostess of Drag Diva Brunch at City Winery and Hard Rock Café in Manhattan. The shows will all have different themes, such as this past Saturday’s show that had a Spice Girls theme where Ginger Ladd performed as Ginger Spice, of course. “One week it could be Golden Girls, to an enchanted fairytale show, to witches and wizards, you name it. We have a rotation of 15 shows to keep people interested,” she said. She’ll make her “Broadway” debut on Sunday, June 6 at Hard Rock Café.

“This last year has been such a shift because what it did for me personally, as someone who loves Rockaway, it was all my intention to be Rockaway’s Queen of Queens but when the pandemic hit, I had to think globally and push my entertainment out to anyone who would see it and I realized my reach could be so much bigger,” Ginger Ladd said. However, while Ginger Ladd will be busy blowing up Broadway and Chelsea, she says she won’t forget her Rockaway roots. She still plans to make local appearances, is working on organizing a Rockaway Pride event and will head the next Poseidon's Parade with her husband as the parade king and queen. “Rockaway was the rebirth of my drag career and I want people here to know that I’m very grateful for the opportunity they gave me to get noticed on a national stage,” she said. THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 What Beach? Dear Editor: The City has failed us, The Rockaways, again. This weekend is the start of the beach season. It is a time when people throughout the City come there to enjoy our beaches. But by the Beach 97 and Beach 86 concession stands and areas, there is no beach at high tide. The City is now

receiving between $300,000 and $453,777 each year from Rockaway Beach Bazaar LLC, the company now running the three concessions along the boardwalk. Queens Borough President, how many people will come back to our beaches and enjoy the food, drink and entertainment at those concession stands when there is no beach at high tide? If you can’t be on the beach, why come to that beach? There are other beaches around the city and I’m sure

the Brooklyn Borough President will be happy to see more people and their money come to his beaches. How long will Rockaway Beach Bazaar LLC be willing to pay for half full concession stands? Parks Commissioner, with no beach, where are you going to put the lifeguard chairs and where are the lifeguards going to put their things? I think the Parks Department will have to close those beaches. Continued on page 21

Going Coastal LOCAL FROZEN TREAT SHOP STARTS FRESH By Katie McFadden

Last year left the Shannon sisters questioning their future as they tried to navigate keeping Coastal Frozen Yogurt afloat amidst the coronavirus pandemic. However, after taking the time to reinvent and renovate, the shop, now simply named Coastal, is back open and ready to serve delicious frozen treats. On Saturday, May 22, Coastal reopened its doors with a new look, a new business model and a new menu with expanded offerings. While no longer allowing self-serve, the Shannon sisters and their local staff are ready to serve customers as a full-service frozen treat parlor. They still have frozen yogurt and they’re also offering soft serve or hard ice cream, and even vegan options locally sourced by MUD, that can be topped off with any of their nearly 30 topping options from gummy candy to fresh fruit, whipped cream and sprinkles to fudge and more. And their new sundae menu with locally inspired names may make the decision easier for those who have a hard time choosing just what they want. The Shannon sisters have been serving up delicious frozen yogurt and ice cream at Coastal Frozen Yogurt since 2015. They found the perfect spot on the corner of Beach 109th and Rockaway Beach Drive, right in the area their dad grew up in, and in an area that had a bright future in an up-and-coming part of town. Locals and visitors alike flocked to the shop for self-serve fro-yo complete with whatever toppings they wanted. However, as the coronavirus pandemic hit, owners, Casey Shannon James, Morgan Shannon McDonnell and Charlotte Shannon, knew they had to switch gears. “We had to kind of change our business model because of Covid. All small businesses were hit hard, and we were not excluded,” McDonnell said. Like many small businesses, they switched to a togo business model, scaling back their menu and hours, opening up a takeout window and most

significantly, no longer being able to offer self-serve, as it was not Covid safe. “Last year it felt like there were so many unknowns of where Covid was going,” James said. However, as people start to get vaccinated, restrictions start to ease and things are looking more hopeful, the Shannon sisters decided to use their time closed in the off-season as a time to start fresh. “This year as Covid starts slowly going away, we decided to remodel,” James said. Around February, with the help of their father, retired firefighter Kevin Shannon, they began renovations inside and out. The most significant change is the main counter is now at the back of the shop, in front of where customers used to be able to grab their own cups and serve themselves whatever fro-yo flavors they wanted before adding their own toppings. “We’re welcoming people back inside again, but we wear gloves, follow safety protocols and when it comes to the machines, we didn’t think people would want to be touching the same handles and sharing spoons with the self-serve method anymore,” James said. Besides a new business model, Coastal now has a new color scheme, a new logo, a new awning, a wooden table facing the street made perfect for people watching while enjoying a treat and old photos on the wall of their parents who grew up around the block, surfing and enjoying the playground across the street. As a local family, despite having

plenty of new visitors with the ferry and hotel nearby, keeping a local vibe was important. Especially on a block that despite going through so many changes and growth, is full of businesses run by local families. “We’re so happy to be a part of this block with born and bred Rockaway families. All three sisters were born in Rockaway, the Healys were born in Rockaway, the Tubridys with the hotel. It’s good to see a block become what it is today with locals operating a lot of these businesses. We’re proud to be a part of that,” McDonnell said. In honor of that, they decided to roll out a brand-new sundae menu with names that might sound familiar to locals. The Shore Front Strangler is a chocolate lover's dream. The Animal, named after the A train, is chock full of goodies that will leave you with a sugar high. The Jawsome, one of the most aesthetically pleasing sundaes, is a tribute to some of Rockaway’s sea life, including sharks. The Reese Park, named after Riis Park, is made for the peanut butter fans. The Wet-

suit, tipping a hat to Rockaway’s surfers, is a classic sundae complete with wet walnuts. And the DFD, their “dairy free dessert,” might be recognized by those who know the local nickname for beach visitors. The DFD features their new product of vegan, dairy free, sugar free MUD, created by locals who happen to live across the street from the Shannons. “We knew that it would be more of a ferry crowd favorite, but we had been looking for something that was healthier. We wanted something for everybody,” James said. The decision to add a dairy free, sugar free option came after years of people with certain dietary restrictions coming in looking for a treat. The Shannon sisters say while they were renovating, customers were coming by eagerly awaiting their reopening, and the shop has been bustling ever since Saturday. “It’s been very busy,” James said. “It’s great because we didn’t think we’d last through the pandemic. It gives us hope that we’re open, and people are coming in and we’re busy. There was a period of uncertainty for us and we’re grateful to the community that we’re still able to be open and serving everyone delicious desserts,” McDonnell said. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our local clientele. We love Rockaway.” Coastal, located at 108-19 Rockaway Beach Drive, is open seven days a week, from noon until 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 p.m. on weekends, with plans to extend hours even later in the summer.

People in the dunes, will kill the grass that is holding the dunes in place. Parks Commissioner, do you have enough manpower and the will to keep people off the dunes? If you don’t, by the end of the summer there will be no grass and after next winter’s storms hit, there probably won’t be any protective dunes left and if it’s a bad year for storms, sections of the boardwalk could be gone as well. THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 Littering Dear Editor: Many of us are lucky to call this beautiful peninsula “home.” Do you leave garbage all over your home? I don’t think so. Yet each time I visit the beach, I find myself picking up other people’s trash. When you visit the beach, it should be left cleaner than how you found it. Let’s make an effort this summer to do just that. When you are packing the wagon up with your cooler and beach chairs, throw in a couple garbage bags, too. If we all make an effort together, we can keep our beaches beautiful! Thomas J McVeigh What A Waste Dear Editor: Last weekend I was shocked twice. You know the big container near CVS for secondhand clothes and shoes? On Saturday evening I saw a big plastic box with food near this container. There were 20-25 cans of canned vegetables,

peas, beans and lentils. On Sunday evening at the same place, I saw two big plastic bags. In one of them were five packs of rice and 2025 cans of the same canned goods. The other bag was much (maybe twice) bigger. In it were many packs of oatmeal (at least ten), the same canned goods and juice, but much more than in the first bag. In our newspaper I very often saw ads about food drives. Maybe this food is the result of very successful food drive? Maybe I am stupid, but I do not understand why we "rape" our soil for bigger harvest, spend natural resources and power, polluting the environment for producing all of these goods and then dump it. Now we will spend more power, more natural resources, produce more pollution in order to clean all this mess. Where is any common sense? It's a shame and it's unnatural. I am absolutely sure nothing should be given for free. When people pay even a token price, they buy only what

they need. But if it's free, they take everything that’s given to them. Maybe there is some profit in this situation. Populist-politicians get a lot of voters. A lot of people have jobs and it reduces unemployment. The government and politicians do not think about the nature. I think who will die the first? People or nature? Four days have already passed from Sunday, but I am still very upset and thinking about it. (I am very sorry for my “excellent" English, but I am a Russian and do not know English very well). Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

In September 2008, a group of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania modified messenger RNA (mRNA) in a way that stabilized the molecule and made mRNA a promising tool for both gene replacement and vaccination. This relatively new technology was used in 2020 to rapidly develop and manufacture a COVID-19 vaccine. This represents the latest in a series of breakthroughs in the realm of viral vaccines, each building on the last and each with a compelling record of disease prevention. The first major vaccine-related advance occurred in 1796 when Edward Jenner, a physician who had a laboratory in southern England, found that an animal virus (cowpox) could protect against a human virus (smallpox), although it would be over 100 years before viruses were discovered as causative agents of disease. Jenner’s work ultimately led to the

The Rockaway Times

VACCINE SUCCESS HAS LONG HISTORY elimination of a disease that is estimated to have killed over 300 million people in the 20th century. That strategy of using animal viruses to prevent human disease continues today. The second vaccine breakthrough occurred almost 100 years later, in 1885. Louis Pasteur found that the spinal cords of rabbits that had been experimentally injected with rabies virus were no longer infectious after 15 days of desiccation (drying). On July 6, 1885, Joseph Meister, a 9-year-old boy who had been attacked by a rabid dog, was taken to Dr. Pasteur’s lab. Using a series of inoculations with suspensions of desiccated rabbit spinal cords, Pasteur saved Meister’s life. Rabies, a disease with a mortality rate of nearly 100%, was now preventable after exposure. Pasteur opened the door for vaccines made with physically or chemically inactivated viruses. During the 20th century, vaccines using this killed-virus strategy included an influenza virus developed by Thomas Francis in the

early 1940s, a polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk in the mid1950s (Salk had trained at Francis’ laboratory at the University of Michigan), and a hepatitis A vaccine that was developed in 1991. The third major advance occurred in 1937 when Max Theiler attenuated (weakened) the yellow fever virus by serial passage through mouse and chicken embryos. This rendered the virus less capable of causing disease but still capable of inducing protective immunity in humans. He won the 1951 Nobel Prize in Medicine for that work. Other attenuated virus vaccines followed including measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and rotavirus. The next breakthrough came in 1980 when biochemists at Stanford University published their work that used Escherichia coli genes that were passed through monkey kidney cells, causing those cells to make a bacterial protein (antibodies). This recombinant DNA technology allowed for the creation of vaccines for hepatitis B, human papillomavirus, and influenza.

Despite the fact that there is still much work to be done to address vaccine hesitancy, build trust, and ensure equitable benefits from vaccination, the list of vaccine successes is long. For example, after the introduction of Salk’s polio vaccine, the number of polio cases in the U.S. dropped from 29,000 in 1955 to 900 in 1962, and the disease is now eliminated here. During the 2019-2020 flu season, flu vaccines prevented an estimated 7.52 million infections, 3.69 million medical visits, 105,000 hospitalizations, and 6,300 deaths in the U.S. And now, with the worst pandemic since 1918, when influenza killed about 50 million people worldwide, we are again seeing vaccines become an important strategy in ridding the world of SARS-CoV-2, especially the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that use the new mRNA technology which, as they don’t contain the actual virus, cannot cause even a mild case of case of COVID-19. Expectation How many times have you been disappointed because you expected another outcome or for someone to do or say something or act in a different way? I’ve been examining this in my own life and looking for a way to remove the expectations and replace them with happy acceptances. I know from my studies and yoga practices, “santosha” or contentment, comes from the ability to accept. Why wouldn’t we want to feel content in our lives and do

everything to be in that state of being? Could be a lot of it is habitual thinking. Just like habitual actions, i.e., habits, we do default to thinking habits. On this road to happiness—a happy life—I am looking for ways to better my inner workings so I can live fully and in delight. For years I said to my friends when in a “philosophical” conversation, when I feel balanced, I will keel over and die! I have come to edit that a bit, because I would like to spend some years feeling in balance, content and happy!

I make myself so unhappy by expecting a few people to be different and live up to what I expect of them. When I put it down on paper here, this seems ridiculous, yet it is a habitual pattern. I took The Power of Habit off the shelf and am revisiting the parts on habitual thinking. All I need is a shift, a switch to a different track, a change. “If you believe you can change—if you make it a habit—the change becomes real. This is the real power of habit: the insight that your habits are what you choose them to be. Once the choice occurs—and becomes automatic—it’s not only real, it starts to seem inevitable,” - Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit. This is not to say that it isn’t complicated. Searching for the reason why we may have expectations may be hard to pinpoint, but with patience and giving space to it, we can create the impetus to make the shift. And then go from there. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

So, I am bringing in the intention to make this change: to replace expectation and disappointment with acceptance and happiness. As we know, energy follows intention. At the start of our yoga practice, we take a moment to create an intention, a positive affirmation, so that we may bring it into our inner world and sooner or later, voila’! It may not be in an “expected” timeframe, but it will come. Repeating the intention often leads the way to “how” to make the change. We may know we want something to be different, but don’t know how. The continued intention opens up pathways for the how. I know this from experience: create the clear intention, bring it in by saying it to myself repeatedly, and let my universe help me to find the way. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you May you have inner peace. Please join me this

Travels With Bob SIGNS WE ARE GETTING BEYOND COVID A sure sign of spring, especially in the more rural areas, is when there are suddenly sightings of bears coming out of hibernation. A major sign that we are at the end of Covid-19 restrictions is the easing of the requirement to wear masks. But more than that is the resumption of travel. TSA reports that record numbers of travelers have been passing through security at all of the region’s airports. And beyond that, airlines are making changes and new ones are appearing. JetBlue, headquartered in Queens, is one of those taking major steps. Starting off as a local/regional airline, it has expanded tremendously. The reason in major part is the loyalty of its customers who find JetBlue to be one of the most accommodating and passenger friendly airlines. While JetBlue has grown to service a number of Latin American countries and the

Caribbean, it is now expanding service to England. On August 11, JetBlue will fly from JFK to London Heathrow. That will expand to Gatwick in late September. Robin Hayes, JetBlue CEO commented that “…travelers from the U.S. to London have had to pay outrageously high fares.” The airline will be charging $599 for economy and $1,979 for its premium seating. Those prices will hold for both Heathrow and Gatwick. Both airports are easy to get into London by its Underground (Subway to you New York/New Jersey commuters). The flights will operate on a daily basis and offer new aircraft, the Airbus A321 long range. They will be fitted with 24 Mint Suit premium seats. Two will have fully closing doors and extra-large space accommodating two passengers. The suites will have lieflat seats with memory foam and a 17-inch entertainment screen. Economy will provide 117 seats and have free wifi and entertain-

ment, including live TV. Other airlines also show signs of coming out of Covid slumber. United and some others are eliminating the vacant middle seat that has been kept open to provide “social distancing.” That’s sure to be met with mixed reviews by passengers. But United has always had the reputation of doing its best to accommodate passengers and pay attention to their comfort. We’ve had reason to be a transcontinental paying customer on United recently and will be again next month. Over the years we have been impressed by the professionalism of United’s ground staff as well as flight crews and flight attendants. Does not matter, economy, business or first class, the flight attendants are professional and make the flight as comfortable as possible. With the return of travel, a new airline is coming on the scene, Breeze. Interestingly, Breeze has been founded by David Needleman, who, coincidentally was

the founder of JetBlue. Breeze will be a single-class airline with a limited flight pattern, although plans are in the works to greatly expand. The carrier will be using Embraer E-190 and E-195 regional aircraft. The planes seat between 108 and 118 passengers. But comfort here will be paramount as the seating configuration will be 2x2 with no middle seats. In October, Breeze will start taking delivery of 60 Airbus A220 planes at the rate of one a month for five years. The A220s will offer a premium class and routes in excess of two hours. There is no indication how long the carrier’s low fares will last as it grows and adds new aircraft. Currently it is offering basic economy fares starting at $39 one-way on 39 domestic routes. While the routes for Breeze are sparse, additional routes will be added through July. At present, some 95 percent of the airline’s routes have no other airline providing non-stop service.

The Rockaway Times

By Beth Hanning Beach Etiquette I should have had this column in last week, but I did not know it was going to be such a spectacular weekend. I usually do not go swimming this early in the year and I almost went in for a dip! Here is my annual beach etiquette column and it is for all of our new residents and our visitors that were pouring off of the ferry this past week. One loyal reader said Kevin should place my column as one of the photos on the boardwalk, but my suggestion has been ignored! Rule 1: When you get to the

Page 35

THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021

beach and there is a lot of space, please do not sit directly on top of people already at the beach. I never understand why someone who has never seen me or met me before wants to sit so close to me? Don’t you want your own space as well? 1b: This also goes to setting up a huge crew directly in front of someone. Many times the residents know that the tide will be coming in as the day goes on and you sitting directly in front of them is both blocking their view and now creates a problem when you have to move when the tide

comes up the beach. I truly think this rule will be broken as the beaches close to the ferry are so small from boardwalk to shore. Rule 2: I love music. Our group often has a radio on the beach. However, when your music is so loud that the entire beach cannot even hear their conversation, that is rude. 2b: This noise rule also applies to vulgar language. Rockaway is a family oriented beach, so please respect the families with children that are surrounding you. Rule 3: Clean up after yourself. This was said in Robert Fulghum’s book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. One of his things he listed 25 years ago was: clean up your own mess. This is not beach etiquette; it is etiquette in general. My daughter and I rode Beach Channel Drive across from the ferry and there was an empty package of chop meat on the sidewalk. CHOP MEAT? This was in addition to the tons of garbage that was strewn about. I understand

that we do not have enough cans but make an effort to at least place your trash in a bag and bring it to the closest can. Rule 4: Dress appropriately. I saw a few people wearing what they thought were clothes. I have to start Jamaica Bay etiquette as well, because a jet skier came into Bungalow Bar with his life jacket and no shirt underneath. It is a restaurant, I do not think you are going to sink, you’ll be okay. Take off the life vest and grab a tee shirt. Please understand that I am not against non-residents of Rockaway enjoying our beaches, I just think that if they knew the rules, it would be a bit better. I have a few more rules and they will be out next week. Have a great week everyone. Of course if I missed a rule, let me know so I can include in next week’s column: email me at mrshanning308@gmail. com. PS. Thanks to our mayor, I never would have guessed beaches would be open on time!

First Drowning of the Season

Teen Shot and Killed in Far Rockaway

An 18-year-old boy from Far Rockaway was shot and killed on Friday, May 21. According to the NYPD, police responded to a shooting call on Beach 30th Street and Seagirt Boulevard at around 9:40 p.m. on Friday. They found Joel Lambert, who lived round around the corner, laying in the street with a bullet wound to his throat. Lambert was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Rockaway Times

Lambert’s mother told the New York Daily News that her son was a young athlete who strived to help others and was hoping to pursue a career in nursing after graduating high school next year. No arrests have been made and this incident is under investigation. If anyone has any information, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577TIPS (8477), visit crimestoppers. nypdonline.org, or text TIP577 to 274637 (CRIMES).

Before Memorial Day weekend, Rockaway has already seen its first drowning. On the night of Sunday, May 24, a woman drowned on Beach 17th Street. The victim, a black woman in her 60s, allegedly took off her clothes and entered the water on Beach 17th after 9 p.m. at night. According to the New York Daily News, witnesses saw the woman struggling and calling for help about 30 feet from the shore. Emergency services were called but the woman had disappeared by the time they arrived. Crews from the NYPD and FDNY immediately began an intense search for the woman in the dark, but eventually had to call it off. The woman’s body was

discovered on the beach on Monday morning. As a reminder, please remember to swim when lifeguards are on duty. Lifeguards will be back on the beach starting Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. daily.

Wrestle Talk A RECAP AND Q&A By Eric Jayden

Results from the May 24, 2021 WWE RAW Show from the Thunderdome in Tampa, Florida. Drew McIntyre vs. Kofi Kingston ended in a No Contest (21:55). Nikki Cross defeated Rhea Ripley (02:00). Charlotte Flair defeated Asuka (21:25). Cedric Alexander defeated Shelton Benjamin (11:55). Riddle defeated Xavier Woods (12:50). Jaxson Ryker defeated AJ Styles (02:05). Sheamus defeated Humberto Carrillo (03:45). Natalya and Tamina defeated Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (11:45). The Match of the Night was Charlotte Flair vs Asuka. These two always bring their A Game and Fire! I always enjoy when

these two fight. It's nice and stiff and full of storytelling. The first question comes from Larry S. in Rockaway Park and he asked, "I am a big Hulk Hogan fan. Is there any possibility of him making a coming back?" Well, Larry, in wrestling we have a saying "Never Say Never.” In my opinion Hulk Hogan can make a comeback but in a very limited capacity. The years of wrestling have taken a toll on his body and I can only see him coming back in a manager or an authority figure role. He recently co-hosted Wrestlemania.

The second question comes from Kenneth A. in Far Rockaway and he asked, "Who do you think has the better product, the WWE or AEW?" Currently, I feel the WWE Brand in general is failing to produce good content with the exception of the NXT brand. So, since NXT is part of the WWE you can say the WWE's NXT brand is delivering better content. The third question of the week comes from Marie H. in Rockaway Beach and she asked, "How much do Pro Wrestlers make?" Good question Marie. A wrestler starting off in the independent scene can make $25 to $50 per match. Once he/she has created a name for themselves they can make $50 to $100 a match, excluding merchandise sales. If the wrestler

signs a contract with a major wrestling promotion, they can make six figures salaries. But as I have mentioned before, a majority of wrestlers are making six-figure salaries working independently throughout the world. The fourth question of the week comes from John H. in Arverne and he said, "Wrestling is fake and I have no idea why anyone would become a wrestler." Well, John, this sounds like more of your opinion about wrestling and I have my own opinion. I love professional wrestling. It has been good to me and I wouldn't trade it in for anything. Thanks, for sharing. I want to thank everybody for sending in the questions. Please continue to send questions to eavil183@yahoo.com.
