Fantastic Photos! Top 30 Named

Rockaway’s Got Talent needs an update: Rockaway’s Got More Talent Than Ever. The Rockaway Times Photo Contest drew more than 1,300 photos and left ten judges with a near impossible task of picking the Top 30. They pressed on, however, and after multiple rounds, finally settled on thirty fabulous photos. The Top 30 will be made into poster-sized photos that will adorn the boardwalk around Memorial Day and be on display throughout the summer. The spectacular photos enhance the boardwalk scene and showcase the amazing talent of Rockaway photographers. In an attempt at fairness, the judges from the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy, The NYC Parks Department, NYC Ferry, The Rockaway Times staff, and John Cori, who first prompted The Rockaway Times to start this contest in 2015, were provided the photos with just numbers and no names attached. From the initial 1300+ photos, 341 photos were selected to move to the next round. That’s worth repeating! More than 300 made it to the second round. The third round narrowed the field to 184. Subsequent rounds, each tougher than the last, continued until the Top 30 remained. Several photographers are no strangers to the Top 30. They’ve submitted photos that have made the finals or even won the

competition. A few photogs find themselves with more than one photo in this year’s Top 30. Bravo! At a ceremony on the boardwalk, at a yet-to-be-determined date, a grand-prize winner will be chosen. The talented winner will get $500 and have his or her photo on the front page of The Rockaway Times. And though we can say unabashedly that the Top 30 are great, we know some wonderful and deserving photos did not make the cut. Some came up short in the voting but deserve some recognition and we’ll name Honorable Mentions in future editions of The Rockaway Times. The cover for The 2021 Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide has yet to be selected and this photo won’t necessarily be from the Top 30. All 1,300 photos will be considered to grace the summer magazine that is a Rockaway keepsake, which will be published Thursday, May 27. Remembering Richie O’Connor By Katie McFadden

“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” It’s a lyric from a song from one of his favorite Broadway musicals, “Wicked,” and it is one that resonates with the hundreds of people who were lucky enough to know Richie O’Connor. However, as hundreds lined up around the block of Denis O’Connor Funeral Home to pay their respects on Sunday, April 25 and pews were packed at St. Rose of Lima Church as an additional 11,000 people tuned in to the live stream for his funeral on Monday, April 26, another one of Richie’s favorite song from “Wicked” also resonates— “Popular.” On Friday, April 23, Richie O’Connor, known to many as the beloved hair stylist from Rocco’s, died after an unexpected and quick battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Richie was just a few weeks away from turning 53. But despite being taken too soon, Ri-

chie O’Connor lived a life that only some could dream of— one of friendship, laughter and so much love. As another song from “Wicked” says, Richie was always “dancing through life.” A lifelong Rockaway resident, Richie O’Connor arrived in the world on May 12, 1968. Born to Lillian and Richard O’Connor, Richie was the youngest after four sisters, Patricia Gray, Lillian Reynolds, Jeanne Byrne and Barbara Knott. Richie came into the world shortly before his eldest sister, Pat, was supposed to get married at age 21. The age

difference made for a unique family dynamic throughout his life. “After he was born, my parents came home from their honeymoon. My dad was a rookie cop in the 100th Precinct and he brought Richie dressed in his little sailor outfit and said to the sergeant, ‘I’d like to introduce you to my brother-in-law,” Christine Ferazani, Patricia’s daughter, said. Ferazani came along just 20 months after Richie. Though he was technically Uncle Richie, she was one of the few who wasn’t allowed to call him that. After all, being so close in age, they were more like brother and sister. But to many others, Richie O’Connor did become known as “Uncle Richie,” even if there wasn’t a family connection. As she gave the eulogy during Monday’s funeral service, Ferazani summed it up well, “Everyone should have an Uncle Richie.” From his partner of 22 years, John Hoffman, and his cat, Lupita, to his 11 nieces and nephews, 12 great nieces and great

nephews, as well as several godchildren, Richie was surrounded by love. But that love extended beyond family. According to Ferazani, Richie had a habit of “collecting people.” From his elementary school days at St. Rose of Lima to his high school days at Beach Channel, through his time spent traveling and his outings across the city, O’Connor made friends everywhere he went. “I can’t tell you how many friends he had,” Richie’s sister, Pat Gray said. “He had 15 different crews.” Many included lifelong or longtime friends—a testament to the bond that Richie formed with those he met. In addition to living a life surrounded by love, Richie spent his life doing what he loved— hairdressing. “When I was a young girl, I had very long hair and he used to love to brush my hair and style it,” Pat Gray said. He did, graduating with a business degree, but he still wanted to be in the business of doing hair. In his 20s, O’Connor got his license and soon started working at Rocco’s Hair Salon, where he transformed the looks of thousands of locals from those looking for a trim, to those wanting to look their best for their most memorable occasions, like weddings, communions, proms and beyond. And his knack for looking good went beyond good hair. From dresses to bags, earrings to shoes, Richie was the go-to guy for fashion advice. “He knew just how to dress everybody. If you had a particular body flaw, he knew how to get the right cut to hide what it was,” Ferazani said. His fashion-sense radiated on the outside as Richie, who never wore an outfit twice, was known to coordinate the

THURSDAY, April 29, 2021 perfect shoes, bow tie and fedora or jaunty cap for a night on the town. During one of those nights out at a Broadway show, Richie picked up on the fashion sense of a fellow audience member sitting next to him— Jimmy Fallon. He struck up a conversation with The Tonight Show host, and by the end of the night, the two were singing karaoke at a nearby bar and Jimmy Fallon took down his address so he could send him one of his suits. It was just one of many celebrity encounters. As a big Bravo TV fan, Richie had a habit of having runins with late night show host Andy Cohen. “He used to stalk Andy Cohen in the summer at the Jersey shore. He’d always find him and take pictures with him,” Ferazani said. And Cohen remembered Richie. Shortly after his cancer diagnosis, Cohen tweeted, “Uncle Richie I am sending you all my hugs and love!!!” While it was a testament to who he was that Richie left impressions on celebrities, it is

those who knew him best who will truly remember Richie O’Connor for the unique person he was. “Richie was truly one of a kind, if only the world had more people like him,” Laura Boyle Rochelle, one of his best friends from high school, said. “He was all about love, family, friends and everyone having fun. We were blessed to have him in our lives and will cherish the memories he gave us.” Her daughter and Richie’s goddaughter, Megan Rochelle said, “If you knew Richie, you loved him. I am so lucky to have had him play so many roles in my life: godfather, brother, friend. Although Richie was my go-to for advice on fashion and style, the advice I will carry forever is to ‘live life like Richie’— he lived life to the fullest and is a true inspiration to us all.” Even with his loss, Richie taught that lesson. His cousin, Kelli Ann Leary, shared a recent conservation she had with Richie, in which he mentioned he wanted to buy a pair of $295 shorts. “I told him he was crazy

to spend that much money on a pair of shorts,” she said. He agreed to wait until they were on sale. “He never got to buy the shorts. If I learned anything his last week, it’s to buy the shorts” she said. #BuyTheShorts was soon used by other friends and family in his memory, like longtime friend, Nancy Re-Ferguson who said, “Let's always live by his lessons: Beauty is pain, #BuyTheShorts, and most importantly, be beautiful inside and out!" Richie O’Connor’s spirit will live on. His friends and family hope to auction off pieces from his flashy wardrobe at some point in the future to raise funds to send kids from the neighborhood to experience a Broadway show. The Graybeards have also started a scholarship fund in his memory to send kids to Richie’s alma mater, St. Rose of Lima. It was pointed out that had New York registered just 89 (89!) more residents the seat count, 27, would have remained the same. Much of the counting was done during the height of the pandemic. While it’s true many people have fled New York for good, a lot of people just left temporarily and others were reluctant to even answer the front door for fear of the virus. No way an accurate count was obtained. It’ll be another ten years before the next census. ***** You can’t fight City Hall goes the old expression. And if Andrew Yang becomes mayor, the fight will become even more futile for those dreaming of activating the old Rockaway Beach Line (Queensrail). For the uninitiated, the commute from Rockaway to midtown Manhattan used to take 34 minutes or so. When the Rock-

away Beach Line was abandoned in the 1960s, so were the tracks, and the stretch of railway became an overgrown, overhead wasteland. Advocates for reviving the line have been giving the good fight for many years but a recent MTA study concluded it would cost billion$ to bring back and political opposition on the other side (those against bringing it back) has always been strong. Yang announced his support for the Queensway which would turn the old rail line into a park, modeled after the High Line in the City. ***** This is the last call to be in The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide. Rockaway Pitches In for Peninsula-Wide Cleanup When everyone comes together to do a small part, it can make a big difference. That was exemplified last weekend as volunteers across the pen-

up, spearheaded by Christine James, was a resounding success. Groups and individuals from the east end to the west end, beach to bay, stepped up and did what they could in various areas that were in need of some tender loving care. We support people who don’t drink too,” Tichenor said. All drinks, whether with alcohol or not, can be served in one of the bar’s special tiki mugs on request, but a deposit is taken to prevent the glasses from disappearing. Sip on a Mai Tai complete with photo-worthy garnishes, munch on some mango habanero wings with just the right amount of kick and don a lei. You’re on vacation. Well, at least it feels that way when you step into Tiki By The Sea. Rockaway’s very own tiki bar is now open. Tiki By The Sea officially opened its doors on Friday, April 23. The tiki bar and restaurant, located at 67-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard (the former home of Thai Kitchen), is the next best thing to come to the ever-growing Arverne by the Sea area. Tiki By the Sea is the brainchild of some folks who know the area well and know good food and drinks. The partners include bartender extraordinaire and managing partner of the Breezys BBQ concession, Amy Tichenor, Dylan Sirgiovanni and Mike Reen, who got their start with Bythebeach Coconuts and then boardwalk concession, Edible Island, and Joe Herron, who has opened some of the best bars in the country. Tichenor explains that Tiki By the Sea is a place where they could see themselves hanging at regularly, and they’ve opened their doors for all of Rockaway and its visitors to enjoy that same vibe. “We wanted to open a place we all wanted to hang out at. Something casual, laid back with good drinks, easy food and a place that’s non-pretentious and where we’re not taking ourselves too seriously,” she said. The inspiration to open a tiki bar came from vacation. “All of us love to travel and wherever there’s a tiki bar, we always go to it, especially when in the Caribbean or Puerto Rico,” Tichenor said. And it was something Rockaway was lacking. “We wanted to bring something to the neighborhood. There was a gap missing there. We wanted to bring some flavors that you can’t really get around the neighborhood that are perfect for after the beach and a long day in the sun,” Sirgiovanni said. Some got a little taste of what was to come at the tail-end of last summer when Edible Is-

land brought their poke bowls from the boardwalk to the future home of Tiki By the Sea as part of a pop-up. Now the space has been decked out with a tiki theme and the menu has grown beyond the popular sushi bowls to include a little something for everyone. From dumplings to fries, to lettuce cups, wings and sliders, small bites make up much of the menu. With meat, vegetarian and even gluten-free options, complete with a gluten-free vegan garlic scallion aioli that goes with everything, everyone can find something to enjoy. In keeping up with technology, all food can be ordered through QR Code menus at each table, but staff will assist those who don’t have smart phones. They also plan to add an on-site digital kiosk for people to walk up to and order. Even the cocktails are crafted with all in mind. From rumbased tiki favorites like the

Mai Tai, Zombie and Dark and Stormy, or the local-inspired Barbadoes Basin named after the nearby body of water on the bayside, to the gin-based Singapore Sling, and the mezcal and gold rum Laka’s Nectar, there’s a good mix of choices to transport you to a tropical island. They even have wine and beer, including Medalla from Puerto Rico, which is perfect in a michelada, and they’ll soon add frozens to the mix. All of the cocktails are made with freshpressed juices and homemade syrups. The liquor brands might not sound familiar, but for those who know tiki drinks, they’re some of the best out there. “We have some of the best rum brands from the Caribbean. We did a lot of research and picked up brands we enjoyed using at the bars we used to work at. You might not be familiar with the rums we have, but they all have a good backstory,” Tichenor said. And if she has some down time between slinging drinks, she may even share some of those stories, such as that of Jamaican Pot Still Rum, made by Ed Hamilton, who wrote “The Complete Guide to Rum.” Even the bar itself comes with its own story as the wood used to create it was repurposed from a familiar place—but you’ll have to ask the bartenders about that one. Tiki By The Sea even offers fun drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol, but want to enjoy the theme. Their drink menu includes “zero-proof” non-alcoholic cocktails such as Liquid

Tiki By the Sea is just getting started. Since Friday, they have been open for a soft opening, but they will be planning a grand opening event in the coming weeks. At some point they hope to add brunch to the mix, with the possibility of themed-brunch events. The space is open for small parties, which are already starting to book up. For now, the owners are happy to finally have their doors open. “We’re so excited to host all of our friends on the peninsula. We want everyone to feel at home here. It’s good vibes all around,” Reen said. Tiki By The Sea is open seven days a week from noon until 10 p.m., with plans to extend hours over the summer. RIIS PARKING FEES TO DOUBLE The parking fees for Riis Park are going up. Last week, the National Park Service (NPS) announced that Gateway National Recreation Area will increase its beach parking fees at Jacob Riis Park. The additional revenue will fund infrastructure and maintenance needs and help enhance the visitor experience. Effective Saturday, May 29, 2021, the beach parking fee will be $20 per vehicle. Season passes will be $100. In 2020, the fee was $10 per vehicle and $65 for a season pass. Civic engagement was conducted in 2020, and the increase was approved earlier this year. This is Gateway’s first parking fee increase since 2012. Beach parking fees charged at Gateway are authorized under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 (FLREA), which allows 80% of the revenue collected at Gateway to remain in the park. In the past five years this money

has been used to rehabilitate the Wise Clock at Riis Beach, update the picnic area and playground at Canarsie Pier, expand kayaking and sailing programs, and to help fund the park’s lifeguard program. Future projects include rehabilitating the entrance booths and lanes at Jacob Riis Park for increased safety and smoother entry, improved ADA accessibility to the beach, and new signage across the unit. Visitors with senior and access passes will continue to receive a 50% discount for parking. Active service members and veterans, as well as visitors with Every Kid Outdoors vouchers will receive free beach parking. “We are committed to keeping the park affordable but also want to provide visitors with the best possible experience,” said Gateway Superintendent Jen Nersesian. “The money from the beach parking fees will help improve our visitor facilities and services.”

New York’s Strongest Rescue Trashed Kitten By Katie McFadden

He’s got eight lives left. A 10-week-old kitten was spared a horrible demise thanks to some of New York’s Strongest with the softest hearts. Local Department of Sanitation workers, John Kase and Willie Montero, assigned to Rockaway’s Q14 garage, were on their regular route in Broad Channel when they picked up a bag among a heap of trash on Cross Bay Boulevard that made an unusual noise. “I started throwing the bags in the truck and my partner, John, walked back to help me when I heard a meow. I said to myself ‘I hope that’s a toy,’” Montero told The Rockaway Times. Montero says there are occasions where they’ll hear an animal noise, only to find a stuffed animal in the trash. Unfortunately, in this instance, their worst fears were confirmed as they pulled the bag back out of the back of the truck before they cycled it. That meow had a

very real voice. Inside the tied and duct-taped trash bag was a live kitten. Kase and Montero were shocked that someone could throw out a kitten, but they quickly took action to make sure it had a better end to its story. “It turned into ‘how could anyone do something like this’ to ‘how can we help this cat?” Montero said. They put the young cat in a box and brought it along for the ride, but quickly found this cat wanted no part of being contained as it climbed right up on to Kase’s chest. The kitten quickly earned a name— Hopper—named after the part of the truck they throw trash into. Kase held on to Hopper as they went along their route and notified their supervisor. Supervisor Charlie Herbert notified Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue, which referred him to Rockaway Beach Vet Services to bring the kitten to be evaluated. Herbert dropped off the kitten at the vet, where it was

treated for an upper respiratory infection, but overall, Hopper is doing just fine and is ready to go to a good home. Applications are now being accepted at www.noahsarkny.com. Montero and Kase, both animal lovers, say they were just doing the right thing and they’re glad it didn’t turn out worse. “I’m just happy I could be a human and do the right thing. I think it’s what any human being would do in that scenario. I’m just happy I heard him before I cycled the truck and crushed him,” Montero said. In his 18 years on the job, Montero says this is the second time he’s found a live animal in the trash. He says about two years ago, he and his work partner were picking up bulk items at an apartment complex in the winter, when they found a bin with a box of kittens that

were just a few days old. In that instance, they also brought the kittens to Rockaway Beach Vet Services. While these stories had a good ending, Montero hopes people will stop this act of throwing out animals. “It’s just cruel. I don’t believe in animal cruelty,” he said.

rect part of his letter appears at the end, urging people to get vaccinated. The rest of his history is pure nonsense. His statistics on the blood clot rate are completely wrong. If we assume that women make up 50% of those vaccinated, then there were eight cases among a population of four million (50% of 8 million doses). This is still a low number, but it is significant for a particular type of thrombosis that is otherwise almost completely unknown. And allowing for the fact that the J&J vaccine was more likely to be administered to the older population (because of refrigeration issues), the rate may be higher still. This is not to cause alarm, but to explain the reason for the government's reason for calling for a temporary halt to its use so that the matter can be evaluated. On the subject of Bill Dickesheid's screed in favor of the Georgia election law changes, I have only one question. Can you point to any place in the Constitution or federal law, or

Local Group Gives Love With a Cleanup Local nonprofit organization, Giving the Gift of Love, Inc. stepped up to show some love to an area that desperately needed some. On Sunday, April 25, volunteers came out to clean up the area between Beach 56th and Beach 59th Streets and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Early morning rain couldn’t keep these volunteers from completing their mission.

According to Giving the Gift of Love’s founder, Victor Boamah, 13 volunteers showed up on Sunday to help clean the area. “It was a great turnout and most of all we got to clean our community,” Boamah said. Hair Today Alopecia (hair loss) of the scalp is a common complaint in primary care medicine. Once the areas of hair loss are found to be non-scarring (scarring refers to scaling, crusting, and obliteration of the hair follicles), the next step is to determine whether the distribution of hair loss is patterned, diffuse, or focal as the distribution guides the possible causes and approaches to treatment. If scarring is present, a scalp biopsy is usually necessary so referral to a specialist is recommended. In patterned hair loss, the thinning occurs symmetrically and most notably at the front,

top, and sides of the scalp, while hair density is retained in the back of the scalp. Although this type of hair loss can occur in both sexes, pronounced recession is much more commonly seen in men. The hair follicles miniaturize (become finer and grow less long). The most common form of patterned hair loss is called androgenic alopecia (AGA). It begins at puberty and the hairline recedes with age. AGA is associated with testosterone and is an inherited trait. If it occurs in women along with irregular menses, acne, and hirsutism (hairiness), the patient should be screened for poly-

cystic ovary syndrome. Treatment of AGA includes topical medication like minoxidil, oral medications (finasteride), and low-level light devices. Diffuse hair loss occurs over the entire scalp. Telogen effluvium (TE) is the most common cause of diffuse scalp hair loss, and there is usually an inciting event. Inciting events include severe acute or chronic illness, major surgery, thyroid disease, pregnancy, anemia, malnutrition, rapid weight loss, certain medications including lithium, warfarin, metoprolol, and chemotherapy, and the discontinuation of estrogen-containing oral contraceptives. TE may be apparent to the patient but not the examiner but can be confirmed by the pull test which is basically pulling out a clump of hair. In TE, hair loss occurs about two to four months following the inciting event. TE is usually self-limited, with hair shedding normalizing in about six to nine months. Focal hair loss occurs in discrete patches on the scalp and

sometimes on the face or body. The most common cause is alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune disorder that often presents early in life and is seen across both sexes and all ages and races. Those with AA may also have atopic dermatitis, asthma, or allergic rhinitis. Patients with AA and family members of those patients may also have other autoimmune disease like vitiligo, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and type 1 diabetes. Management of AA can be difficult as it is unpredictable, with spontaneous regrowth of hair occurring in up to 30% of milder cases. In active areas, the scalp may be pink and “exclamation point” hairs (hair with constricted lower ends) may be observed. If hair does grow back, it is often non-pigmented and appears white. Some topical treatments for AA have shown promise, as have some newer oral medications for severe disease. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code. We are sharing this info each week. The latest info represents changes between 04/19/202104/26/2021. In 11691, positive cases increased by 66 from 7,203 to 7,269. There were four new deaths in this period, bringing the total number of deaths to 450. Twenty-three percent or 10,930 people have been fully vaccinated. In 11692, cases went up by 28, from 1,778 to 1,806. There were two new deaths in this period, bringing the total to 104. Twenty-five percent or 3,955 people have been vaccinated.

In 11693, cases rose by 15 from 1,098 to 1,113. There were no new deaths, and the total remains at 39. Thirty-one percent or 3,007 people have been fully vaccinated. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 27, from 2,210 to 2,237. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 96. Forty percent or 6,610 have been fully vaccinated. In 11697, cases rose by five from 547 to 552. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 12. Seventy-two percent or 1,925 people have been vaccinated. Go With The Flow Go with the flow. Opposite of resistance. My latest personal “study” has been about resistance. When I’m not accepting of a person’s action or lack of, or a current reality, or state of affairs, I find myself focusing my thoughts on that and it is so unsettling. I keep on coming around to why is this so, or asking the same questions over and over. It never gets better, that is, the feeling around it, and nothing changes. So, rather than dwell on

whatever it is, I am practicing letting go of the resistance. Resistance is like abruptly putting up a stop sign. Something happens or someone repeatedly behaves in a way that you have something to say about, and you come to a halt and put up a barrier of whys and hows. It doesn’t feel good emotionally and chances are it takes a toll on the body’s systems as well, if even temporarily. It’s like being paralyzed or frozen in time. culty because there is something of our own making in the way. Practicing letting go of this resistance—what is not serving me in any way—has really opened up a channel of ease within myself. Accepting situations as they are has given me a gift of relief. All of a sudden, I am free. I am free to think about, feel around and try to change the situation or communicate in a good way with someone. When we can let go of the halt, that boundary, that stop sign—the resistance, we don’t focus on what it is, and can allow space for understanding, empathy, compassion, maybe right action. Even if the situation may never change, it is in the flow and not in the resistance, that helps to make peace with it and move on with a little more ease. Flowing through life feels much better than stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going. A stream of water flows

through open channels and is abruptly stopped by a huge boulder. In your mind’s eye, imagine the water flowing—it is going along easily, maybe with a ripple here and there, but when it gets to the boulder, crash! Flowing through difficulties, making a conscious effort to do so by imagining the channel open and free, is so much better and less tiring. Resistance can be really tiring, constant push back, there is a lot of energy required to hold up that stop sign. We don’t have to be right about something. We don’t have to make someone do something he/ she is never going to do. We don’t have to do anything that doesn’t come from a place of genuinely wanting to do it. Let go of resistance, go with your flow and make peace with yourself. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

RISE Community Cleanup Day By Liam Lachner, Community Outreach Coordinator and NYC Civic Corps Member

On Saturday April 17, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) hosted its first public outdoor community cleanup of 2021. The purpose of this event was to clean up a stretch of land located on Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 59th and 62nd Streets adjacent to the elevated train tracks. RISE has been managing this area in partnership with NYC DOT as part of its Wellness Way Initiative. The intent of this initiative is to activate a section of demapped roadway and adjacent vacant lots as a hub for pedestrian use and recovery efforts, focused on improving the health and wellness of the local community. RISE had a fantastic turnout with around 40 people coming out to volunteer their time.

The group consisted of RISE’s Shore Corps after school students and local volunteers of all ages. RISE distributed gloves, garbage bags, shovels, trowels, and rakes to ensure our volunteers had all that they needed. There were three goals that RISE had planned prior to the event and wanted to achieve by the end of the day. The first goal was to clear out a significant portion of the garbage left behind. This area has been used as a dumping ground for household garbage and was also collecting litter for months, if no action was taken the trash would just keep piling up. Next our focus was on removing the invasive Japanese Knotweed

that has run rampant throughout the area. This invasive species can grow to upwards of seven feet and spread, causing all of the native plants in the area to die off. Our final goal was to finish adding new plants to one of our gardens. After last week's planting and cleanup with the high school students from our Shore Corps internship program was such a success, we asked some of them to come back and help finish the job. RISE could not have asked for a more dedicated group of volunteers. Our volunteers were stationed all along the area, not only to ensure social distancing, but to also cover as much ground as possible. The piles of bagged trash and Japanese Knotweed at the end were massive, spanning the entire stretch underneath the elevated train tracks. After the event, members of the NYC Department of Sanitation picked up our piles of garbage and plant

litter. If you are interested in being a part of RISE’s next cleanup, then come join us on May 15, at Beach 59th Street and Rockaway Freeway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and we will finish the work we started at that site. Special thanks to all the RISE staff and students who volunteered their time for this event, and to our partners at NYC Dept of Transportation, NYC Parks Dept, and NYC Dept of Sanitation for their support. Another thank you to the Queens Borough President's Office for attending and another to Rhonda Binda the Deputy Borough President for lending a hand. Lastly, thanks to New York Health and Hospitals for setting up a tent to provide COVID testing to any community members passing by and to our volunteers after the event. Queenslink is The Answer To Queensway By Andrew Lynch

Mayoral candidate Andrew Yang stood in Forest Park, Queens and gave his support to the Queensway, a project designed to convert the Rockaway Beach Branch railroad into a High Line style park. Building a park along this abandoned railroad would be a great improvement to the quality of life in central Queens but would come at the cost of losing an important transportation asset. Building parks or transit should not be a zero sum game. QueensLink envisions the Rockaway Beach Branch with space for both transit and parks. The goal of the QueensLink is to build the foundation for a healthier, more sustainable city. By linking the major east-west subway lines into Manhattan with a north-south line connecting all of Queens we can reduce travel time to midtown Manhattan by up to 30 mins a day. Creating a new crosstown transit route will reduce the need for Brooklyn or Queens riders to first travel into Manhattan. This

creates faster journeys and can reduce subway congestion in Manhattan. Improved transit will help small businesses from Long Island City to the Rockaways. Utilizing modern construction techniques to build quieter tracks that won’t negatively impact neighboring homes. The space below the tracks would be opened up to create up to 33 acres of new park space. Transit will connect riders to the existing parks and beaches of Queens. Expanding transit will reduce the dependence on car travel and reduce pollution along the route

and help create a healthier Jamaica Bay. QueensLink is very much in favor of expanding park access to as many New Yorkers as possible. Building a High Line style park in the center of Queens will not do anything to reduce the dependence on gasoline burning vehicles on our roads and highways. All over this country, cities are rising to the challenge to reimagine themselves for a more sustainable future. Parks and alternative transportation go hand in hand. The QueensLink can be the next generation project which supports a healthier, more sus-

tainable lifestyle for all the residents of Queens and NYC, not just those who are fortunate enough to live by the park. The QueensLink has shown that both rail and parks can co-exist along this rightof-way. Currently, QueensLink is undertaking an Economic Impact Study to show the value that improved transportation can bring to Queens and the great city. The goals of this study are to show that the costs stated by the MTA are comically over estimated; to show how reducing travel time to JFK and the Rockaways can save the city and citizens revenue lost by sitting in traffic; and to show how the improved transit can help small businesses throughout the borough. New Yorkers deserve leaders with a true vision for a safer, healthier, and more sustainable city. QueensLink is the answer to the challenge for our next leaders of creating a better tomorrow. MAKE TRAVEL EASIER FOR YOURSELF By Bob Nesoff

Traveling under the new rules, even though the pandemic appears to be on the wane, can be challenging. But there are steps you can take to get the bite out of it. I recently did a roundtrip to California for a meeting (more on that at the end) in Los Angeles. The flight required a plane change in Houston that could have been avoided with a bit more investigation on my part. But passing through the airport was eased somewhat because I carry a Global Entry card. While that card was originally designed to speed up U.S. citizens returning from a foreign destination, it has taken on new meaning today. With that card you automatically also receive TSA PreCheck. That allows you to go

through security without removing jackets, shoes/boots and such. There is also a dedicated line for Pre-Check that will speed you along while others trudge through long lines. The Global Entry card, as does Pre-Check, costs $100 for five years and requires a personal visit to an application point at designated airports. A bit of a hassle, but it’s only one time as you can renew online. Check with your credit card issuer as many of them will reimburse you for that cost. Airline credit cards for some lines also provide day passes for their lounges. The only drawback here is that if the lounge is busy, day passes are not honored. There is a way around that, but it costs more. Chase/United Airlines offers a “Club Card,” considered

a “Black Card” that is quite prestigious. Not cheap, but if you fly often, well worth it. The cost is just south of $600 annually. The card grants access, no matter how busy the club, to 40 United Airline clubs in the U.S. as well as Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Mexico City and Tokyo Narita. But there is more. They are part of the international Star Alliance that includes quite a number of foreign airlines such as Lufthansa. You have access to the club’s lounges of those airlines. With the pandemic, the offerings in the clubs have been limited, but the comfort of sitting there while waiting for a flight is immeasurable. When the pandemic is under control and they fully reopen, there are usually fully stocked assortments of food. Drinks, alcohol included, are available now. And that is as no charge. On my way back from L.A. there was a long wait. A very long wait. Sitting in comfortable chairs in the club, having a snack and a drink made that card very worthwhile. The card also increases considerably the number of points/miles you receive when charging the trip to the card. And you would be pleasantly amazed at the attention you receive when personnel see that card.

For those of you renting cars at your destination, be aware that there is a severe shortage of available vehicles…even with a confirmed reservation. A reservation works in favor of the companies, not you. They are running out of vehicles at a record pace and they really don’t care much that you will have no transportation. When the pandemic lasted longer than anyone thought, the rental companies began cutting personnel and selling off rolling stock. They are now in the process of obtaining additional vehicles and rehiring. But that will take a while. What can you do? Reserve as far in advance as possible and hope that when you arrive, there is stock in inventory. The reason for my trip to L.A. is a personal best. Some time back, I wrote an action novel, Spyder Hole, that was compared by some reviewers to Tom Clanc y and Vince Flynn. A friend gave a copy to a movie producer and they asked to meet with me. Hence the trip to Los Angeles. The bottom line… they bought the rights to make a movie and are now discussing leading actors and screen writers. So, in my case it makes sense to have the Black Card but you will have to think hard and see if it is cost effective for you.

The Question of the Week comes from Wendy M. in Rockaway Park and she said, "Being a wrestling fan for over 20 years now, why does it feel like all the televised wrestling shows are lacking storyline and just fall short from hitting the mark?" Wendy, this is question I recently discussed with my friends in the business and we all agreed that to a certain extent wrestling and wrestling storylines are not interesting and/or have fallen flat. Usually, after Wrestlemania, most

storylines begin to some take a turn for the better or the worst. One thing that should be happening, and I believe it is to a certain extent, is that AEW and IMPACT Wrestling should be taking the lead in the television ratings as they have enough talent to create storylines that get fans emotionally invested.
