Call Her Council Member: Selvena Brooks-Powers Wins D31 Race

By Katie McFadden

District 31 officially has a new city council member. On Friday, March 19, Selvena Brooks-Powers was sworn in after winning New York City’s first real test of ranked-choice voting in the special election for the District 31 City Council seat. On February 23, District 31 ranked their top five choices for city council out of nine candidates. By the end of the night, Brooks-Powers held the lead with about 38% of the vote, but she didn’t have the 50% threshold needed to officially be declared winner, so ranked-choice voting officially came into play for the first time in an election. On Tuesday, March 16, the NYC Board of Elections finally began the process of hand counting the ballots in rankedchoice voting rounds, eliminating those with the lowest votes from the process, and going through voters’ next choices to redistribute the votes. By Thursday, March 18, they had a winner. With 3,841 votes, Brooks-Powers had 59% of the vote, beating out Pesach Osina’s 2,674 votes. “I am honored to be elect-

ed by the residents of the 31st City Council District in Southeast Queens. I stand on the shoulders of the leaders that have come before me, but especially that of Juanita Watkins, the first woman of color to serve a NYC Council district and the only woman to have ever served the 31st District — almost 20 years ago,” Brooks-Powers soon said in a statement after her win. "Running for office takes commitment and drive, and I wish the best for the other candidates. I remain thankful to everyone who supported me during the campaign - my family, friends, mentors, faithbased leaders, community leaders, and brothers and sisters in labor. "We are in the midst of a tremendously challenging time, and the 31st District has been one of the hardest hit. I understand the gravity of the next few months and am ready to hit the ground running to begin immediately delivering for the district. In the last 20 years, we faced 9/11, Flight 587, Superstorm Sandy, the 2008 economic crisis, and now the Covid-19 pandemic. Our community is resilient, and we will recover from this pandemic and come back stronger. I will work tirelessly to ensure we get our fair share of support, resources, and respect from City Hall.” Former District 31 City Council Member, now Queens Borough President Donovan Richards congratulated Brooks-Powers, who he had endorsed, on her win. “All of the ballots are counted, and the people have spoken: congrats Council Member-elect Continued on page 4

CALL HER COUNCIL MEMBER Continued from Page 3 Selvena Brooks-Powers! With this being the first true test of Ranked Choice Voting, it was great to see democracy in action and see Selvena prevail,” he said. “I am confident Council Member-elect Brooks Powers will build on the work my office and I started and chart a new course for the future of the 31st District. She will make Southeast Queens proud.” Runner-up Osina conceded saying, “Queens City Council District 31 is and will always be my home. I want to first thank my family for supporting my run for office as this takes a lot of patience and understanding. I want to thank everyone who believed in me and supported my candidacy by voting for me, by volunteering for my campaign, and would also like to thank my staff who assisted me run a great campaign. THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2021 each and every one of you. “We ran a great campaign, but the voters of Queens' 31st Council District have exercised their right, and have used the power of their votes, their ranked choice votes ... and they have spoken. “I congratulate Selvena Brooks-Powers on her victory as the next person to represent our community in the New York City Council. I wish her the best as we need to come together as a community given the many challenges ahead,” Osina said. Brooks-Powers is already hitting the ground running in her new position as the City Council Member for District 31, but she will soon have to get to work on defending her position. The recent election was to fill the remainder of Richards’ term, which ends on December 31. In June, Brooks-Powers will likely face contenders again in a democratic primary, and once again in the general election for a full term for the position in November.

Ulrich Demands DOE Change Covid Closure Procedures

Following random school closings in the area due to a few positive coronavirus cases, Councilman Eric Ulrich is asking the Department of Education (DOE) to lighten up on shutdowns. Students were able to return to middle schools last month and Monday, March 22 was supposed to be the day high school students could return to school but for several local schools, those returns are delayed, and other students have returned back to remote due to the school buildings

being forced to close due to students or teachers testing positive for coronavirus, sometimes for just two cases. As we go to press, school buildings on the peninsula that are completely closed include I.S. 323 (Scholars’ Academy), the entire Beach Channel Educational Campus (including Channel View School for Research) and P.S. 43 and P.S. 197 in Rockaway. Other schools have had to close certain classrooms including P.S. 47 (currently in the old Stella Maris), The Waterside School, P.S. 233Q, Village Academy and P.S. 256Q. The closures have left parents and students looking for some normalcy, frustrated to say the least. Councilman Ulrich says it’s

time for the DOE to change its protocols for Covid-19 closures. In a recent letter penned to Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter, the Councilman details the many challenges parents in his district are currently facing as a result of the ongoing closures. "For more than a year now, students have had their entire academic lives upended by the pandemic. Distance learning simply does not provide the same quality of education and necessary social interaction for our students," Councilman Eric Ulrich wrote. "Additionally, as parents and guardians have been returning to work, finding childcare during the school hours has become a massive burden – and oftentimes, a costly one." "During a time of such economic uncertainty, we cannot afford to put parents in a position where they must choose between putting food on the table and caring for their child

during school hours," he added. In his letter, Ulrich notes that his office has been inundated with complaints from constituents. "In recent months, schools in my district have been opened and closed so many times that hundreds of parents have contacted my office to complain," he wrote "In some cases, entire buildings were closed on account of just two positive cases." Ulrich explains that no other facility or business has such a strict standards for operating, urging DOE to ease up on the protocols. "While we can all agree that the safety of our children and DOE staff is the highest of priorities – no other businesses, offices, or facilities have such strict guidelines for closures," Ulrich added. "In order to begin returning to normalcy, it is imperative we provide our children in-person learning and reopen our schools."

A Fresh Start to Avoid the Day By Katie McFadden

Avoid the Day is turning a new page. After deciding to temporarily close the storefront in December, the owners of the local bookstore and café are ready to reopen their doors to offer a literary escape once again on Friday, March 26. And this time, there will be wine. When local husband and wife, Jianna and Jason Heuer, fulfilled their dream of opening a bookstore in Rockaway in February 2020, factoring a pandemic into their business plan just a month later was the last thing they expected. Six weeks after opening, the Heuers were forced to close their storefront for Avoid the Day Bookstore & Café and find alternative ways to try to sustain their brand new business. They tried putting their stock online and offered shipping, curbside pick-up and local delivery, and as conditions improved during the pandemic, they were able to reopen the storefront to some extent, but something was off. SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR OVER 50 YEARS

After all, the true charm of the bookstore experience was missing. “The magic of a used bookstore is in the browsing. Happening upon a book you have always wanted, or never knew about, at a fantastic price because it comes to you having already been loved by someone else,” Heuer said. “The comfort of a local cafe is in knowing the owners who in turn know your name, are interested in your story, and greet you with a genuine smile.

A FRESH START TO AVOID THE DAY Continued from Page 6 the most important one was keeping our day jobs and we decided it was best to take a step back and figure out what to do that would be sustainable while also focusing on our day jobs a bit more.” The Heuers decided to take a winter break. “It was more expensive to keep the door open than it was to close or ‘hibernate’ for the winter. Many fellow small businesses also followed this tact for the winter months,” Heuer explained. To continue to sustain the business, they decided to put their book stock on Bookshop.org and LibroFM, which Heuer says was successful for what it was. “We have had consistent sales and interest both on our website and via social media,” she said. Now the Heuers are now gearing up for a triumphant return this Friday, March 26. The reopening coincides with not only some nicer weather, but a reason to say “cheers.” Heuer says,

“We acquired our tavern license and will be serving wine and more substantial food when we reopen. We knew the license would be coming around February and we were waiting for warmer weather to come so we could set up an outdoor seating area when we reopen.” When Avoid the Day reopens, they’ll be offering a selection of wines to enjoy with a good read. “We will have a house Red, White, Rosé, and Prosecco that we will likely change seasonally. We will carry cans (perfect for the beach), bottles, and if you're dining outside- by the glass,” Heuer said. But the full indoor drink and read experience will have to wait. “We will only be doing to-go both for wine and food inside the store until COVID is a bit more under control. We want to be sensitive to our patrons who are just there to browse and not to eat and keep everyone as safe as possible,” she said. ATD will also offer a selection of coffee and teas for those who don’t want alcohol, and some good local eats to pair with a

good book and beverage. “We will be serving baked goods from Fat Cardinal Provisions and Raquel Confections and pizza from Last Dragon Pizza,” Heuer says. Since they launched the store, the Heuers wanted to incorporate local offerings into the café side of their business. “From the start, even when we were just a pop-up, pairing with local businesses has been an important part of our mission. We think when local businesses promote one another and support one another, the economy thrives,” Heuer said. While the bites and beverages will be great, as Rockaway’s only bookstore, ATD is still all about the books. “We are first and foremost a bookstore, our cafe offerings are a great addition to enhance one's experience but not the main focus,” Heuer said. Most importantly, ATD will once again be open for browsing and purchasing some of the many titles they offer. And while they won’t be serving food or drinks to stay indoors during regular hours for the time being, they will

offer private bookstore experiences for those who want to really avoid the day. Heuer explains these are “experiences where people can book time outside of our regular hours for up to six people to come in and eat, drink, browse, play games, choose their own music, and generally just have a great time. It's like a private literary salon, date night, or family time. A way to get out of the house but do it safely.” After an unpredictable year and a voluntary hiatus, the Heuers are ready to reopen their doors. “We are looking forward to serving this great community again. We have missed our regulars, meeting new customers, and introducing people to their next favorite book,” Heuer said. Avoid the Day Bookstore, located at 99-04 A Rockaway Beach Blvd, opens Friday, March 26. Hours will be Wednesday through Fridays, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, check out www.avoidtheday. org.

The Rockaway Times

THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2021 reminds us of another commuter tax story. In 1999, one of her predecessors, who happens to be her mother, Audrey Pheffer, voted with others to repeal the commuter tax which was levied at the rate of 45/100 of one percent of the salary of people who did not live in the City. All those people coming into the City each day from Upstate and Long Island had to chip in for the city services they used. The repeal has cost the City billions, many billions, since. Maybe they should have made that tax deductible instead of repealing it. ***** The news broke after we went to press last week so we’re a little late in congratulating Selvena Brooks-Powers for her victory in the District 31Special Election to fill the City Council seat vacated by Donovan Richards. Hats off to all runners-up and especially to Pesach Osina and Manny Silva who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. This election used ranked-choice voting (there were nine candidates) which required hand-counting and made for a long and tedi-

ous process. ***** On Monday, Governor Cuomo announced that all New Yorkers age 50+ are now eligible for the vaccine. Cochrane Strength: Reaching the ‘Unreachable’ By Daniel Lynch

The pandemic has altered nearly every aspect of our lives— and exercise is no exception. Capacity limitations, face coverings, and social distancing protocols implemented by public health officials have drastically changed how, when, and where we exercise. Although these protocols may give someone every reason to skip a workout, exercise is vital to one’s physical and mental health, pandemic or not. Nevertheless, most know that exercise promotes good health. What many do not understand is just how important it truly is. Leave the explaining up to Breezy Point native, Kevin Cochrane. Cochrane has dedicated the last three years of his life to working out and building his body. Even Cuisine by Claudette, which supports good nutrition, knows Cochrane is the real deal as in November, he became their first-ever sponsored athlete.

And he’ll soon be sharing his knowledge locally. “Fitness truly saved my life,” says Cochrane. “Not long ago, I was in a dark place and fitness brought me to a brighter side. I became involved in fitness and general wellness to better myself and I earned what I worked for: results. I had many people asking me about my workout routine, diet, supplements, sleep schedule, etc. At one point I thought to myself... ‘why not just make a fitness account to give people access to what I’m doing.’” So, he did just that, and it is “booming.” Since launching Cochrane Strength on Instagram, he has gained nearly 1,500 followers and he’s now trainer in gyms and fitness studios around NYC. You can catch Cochrane at HIT Factory in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and Fit4Life in Howard Beach, where he is both a personal trainer and group fitness instructor. And he’ll soon be coming to the peninsula. Cochrane will be teaching at The Rockaway

Hotel on Beach 108th Street and Burn Fitness on Beach 104th Street. Additionally, for those who enjoy some fresh air while working out, Cochrane says, “I am planning a beach boot camp during the summer months as well. Keep an eye out!” Cochrane says his training is made for all fitness levels. “I have something for everyone. I train beginners, athletes, elderly, etc. All are welcome. My biggest suggestion to anyone trying to make a change in their lifestyle is to come and take one of my classes or talk to someone

who has taken one. These classes will change your quality of life for the better.” Besides showing others what he does, Cochrane says he also started his Instagram account “because I am driven to help others reach the unreachable. I want to support those who may feel isolated, anxious, or fearful [all of which could be side effects of the year-long quarantine] because that was me.” Cochrane encourages people to kick those doubts to the curb. “You can take control of your life. Make no excuses and come train with me,” he said. Check out Cochrane’s Instagram account @coch_strength to find out when and where he will be hosting classes. With beach season around the corner, there is no better time to join him in his quest. After all, only 87 days remain until summer. And conveniently, group fitness classes in NYC were given the OK to resume this week indoors. With that being said, it is time to move!

A March for Irish Solidarity On Sunday, March 21, a local organization put a unique spin on traditional St. Patrick’s Day parades to send a strong message. As a piper led the greenclad group through Belle Harbor to Rockaway Park, this march put out a call for Irish solidarity for racial justice. Local group “Your Anti-Racist Neighbors” organized Sunday’s “Irish Solidarity March”

for all marginalized groups around the world. In a social media post for the event, the group said, “As Irish Americans who are proud of our cultural history of resistance to oppression and solidarity with marginalized communities, we will march to uplift that proud tradition. In political arenas, in mainstream media outlets and in our own community, both

historically and in the pres- of course, bagpipe music. Photos by Sean Boyle. ent day, it pains us to see the harmful complicity of so many of those who share our ancestry. This is our response.” The gathering of about 40 people met on Beach 129th and continued to the boardwalk, where they peacefully marched to Beach 105th Street and shared the message behind the event with words, signs and

ADDABBO AWARE GAMBLING CAN BE A PROBLEM March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and as Chair of the NYS Senate Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee, Senator Joe Addabbo is aiming to help people who need it. The NYS Senate passed legislation (S.4207), sponsored by Senator Addabbo, requiring the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to develop a problem gambling education program that all individuals, prior to being removed from any self-exclusion list, must complete. Many gaming facilities nationwide use self-exclusion lists to encourage responsible gaming. In New York, gaming facilities are required to offer individuals the ability to voluntarily place themselves on a self-exclusion list, which will prevent them from entering, placing a wager, or collecting winnings from a gambling facility. In addition, if an individual is seen on the premises of a facility, they may be escorted off the casino’s property. “Problem Gambling Aware-

ness Month serves as a reminder that gambling addiction is real and requires effective resources to educate, support, and treat individuals,” Addabbo said. “As the prospect of legalizing mobile sports betting appears closer than ever, we remain focused on raising public awareness about problem gambling and its negative effects. This legislation will help raise awareness while enhancing self-exclusion services for individuals seeking to confront their issues with problem gambling.” For those seeking help with problem gaming, the New York State Gaming Commission offers many Responsible Gaming Resources on their website (ny.gov/ programs/responsible-gaming), or they can call 1-877-8HOPENY for addiction support and referral services, or they can text HOPENY(467369). After passing the Senate, the bill moves to the Assembly Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee for consideration.

The Plunge Goes On By Katie McFadden

They were freezin' for a reason on Saturday. Dozens of brave souls decided to take the plunge and jump into the Atlantic to raise money to support Special Olympics NY. On Saturday, March 20, with big smiles and joy to keep their spirits warm, plungers headed to Beach 94th Street to run into the ocean for a chilly dip on the first day of spring. But the motivation behind it made it easy. After all, those who plunged were raising funds to help keep Special Olympics programs across the state doing the great work that they do. Covid couldn’t stop this event from being a success. Usually, the event is held in Riis Park, but this year the location was changed to Beach 94th Street. With Covid-19 safety in mind, each plunger was allotted a time slot sometime between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, so that groups could maintain social distancing. Participants were also required to wear masks and sanitizing stations were on site. Some could also opt to participate in a virtual plunge by filming themselves plunging somewhere besides Beach 94th Street. Each group and individual that took the plunge put in hard work to raise money for the event. According to the organizers, the plunge reached its goal of raising $35,000. The top team was Rockaway’s own St. Camillus Special Olympics Phelan Cold group, which raised more than $9,000 alone. Courts for Mary Quinn was the

tember. According to the plunge fundraising site, in second place was Jonathan Beiner, who raised around $2,400, and third was Thomas Quinn who raised just under $2,400. Anyone who raised more than $150 went home with the coveted 2021 Polar Plunge sweatshirt. The spirit of the plunge was made extra special with groups showing up in costume to

second biggest fundraising group with over $8,000 and the Cross Island Plungers followed close behind raising more than $7,800. The top individual fundraiser was Ray Otton, who volunteers for St. Camillus Special Olympics. Otton raised more than $4,000. In addition to donations from family and friends, Elizabeth Hanna of Rockaway Businesses Need You helped boost Otton’s donations by $1,000 by running raffles leading up to the event. Otton, Patrick Trainor and the St. Camillus group took the plunge in memory of the late Richard Connor, a beloved participant in the group who died in Sep-

cheer plungers, on including Darth Vader and Storm Troopers, who posed to take photos. The local NYPD 100th Precinct got into the spirit as several officers took the dip and their Youth Coordination Officers and Explorers volunteered their services by taking temperatures of plungers, giving out sweatshirts and even dressing up as the plunge mascot polar bear. EKG Info

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Last month, the publisher (Kevin Boyle) received an email from a reader asking me to do a column about home electrocardiograph (EKG or ECG) machines. The reader specifically mentioned the KardiMobile EKG device. Before I get into that device, allow me to mention some basics about the science and technology of EKGs. An EKG machine measures the tiny electrical currents generated in the heart before, during, and after a heartbeat. To begin a heartbeat, an electrical impulse is generated in the sinoatrial node, the heart’s intrinsic pacemaker located in the upper left chamber, known as the atrium. As this impulse travels down the electrical pathway in the heart, it first causes the atrium to depolarize or contract, and then the ventricle. After the heart muscle contracts, it must electri-

cally reset itself to be able to accept the next impulse. This electrical reset is called repolarization. All this electrical activity is tracked by the EKG machine. The first use of electrocardiography was in the 1870s. By about 1910, EKG units were commercially developed. These units were very large, about the size of a bedroom dresser. Up until the 1980s, EKG units were analog, meaning the electrical impulses from the heart caused a small motor in the EKG machine to move a stylus over a paper graph, creating a recording. With the advent of the digital age, the motor and stylus were eliminated. The most common EKG units in use today create a 12-lead, or 12-channel, recording using ten electrodes. One electrode for each limb, and six electrodes spaced across the chest. These are called the precordial leads. 12-lead EKGs can be used to diagnose a variety of heart is-

sues, including rhythm disturbances, heart enlargement, heart damage (i.e., from a heart attack), electrical impulse issues, and heart attacks. They are also used to check the performance of implanted devices like pacemakers and defibrillators. In today’s digital world, EKG devices for home use come in all shapes and sizes, from smart watches to devices like the KardiMobile EKG. But almost all of these devices that are intended for use outside of a medical setting are one lead devices, meaning they only have two electrodes, not ten. Typically, they use the same setup that EMTs use. They will give a one channel recording, not a 12-channel recording. They are most useful at detecting heart rhythm anomalies, for example atrial fibrillation. In most cases, they cannot detect or diagnose abnormalities like a 12-lead recording can, for example a heart attack in progress. On the upside however,

they are relatively inexpensive and, when used with a smartphone, they can email the recording directly to the patient’s physician. They are most suited for use by someone who has an ongoing heart rhythm issue like atrial fibrillation or has a pacemaker or defibrillator. Another useful and inexpensive home health device is a pulse oximeter, which clips onto a fingertip and measures the amount of oxygen in the blood and the heart rate. A normal pulse oximeter, or pulse ox, reading would be between 93 to 98%, however someone with a pulmonary disease like asthma or COPD might have a reading at or below 90%. These units are helpful to have at home for those with these lung diseases, especially during a symptom flare-up. A low pulse ox may be an indication to call the doctor and get to the hospital. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Travels With Bob TAPPAN’S ’76 HOUSE, HISTORY AND SPIRITS By Bob Nesoff

With the danger of the pandemic coming to a close, try planning day trips to get back in the swing of traveling again. You would do well to consider a drive up to Tappan, NY and its amazing historic district. One must see spot here is the Old ’76 House. Tappan’s Old ’76 House could claim the title of being one of the oldest taverns in the New Jersey/ New York corridor, but few can dispute the fact that it was the location for events that could have altered the Revolution and had us all pledging allegiance to Queen Elizabeth. And it has the ghosts to prove it. Today it serves not only fine modern food, but also boasts the ghosts of a woman, man and two children of undetermined origin that have served as an exciting addition to a peaceful meal. Robb Norden, who has owned the establishment for 35 years, has seen the spectral figures, as have any number of people there for a meal. One, a woman, appears at a window table in the south end of the dining room, while a male visits diners at the opposite end. Speculation is that the male ghost seen at a corner table might be that of infamous British spy Maj. John André, hung on the hill behind the tavern. He simply appears, moves around the west end of the dining room and then goes back to wherever ghosts go. “The only ones that bother me,” Norden, commented, “are the two children. They only appear on the second floor. Seeing, as I have, the ghosts of two young children, a boy and girl, is bothersome. I don’t know who they are or what their story is.” And there is proof. Norden produces a photo that has a spectral being in it. “A young couple had their wedding reception here some time back. After they left, I received a call from the bride asking me who the lady in a blue dress was that photo-bombed a picture. When I saw the photo, it took me aback. It was the female ghost

who was the uninvited guest at the reception.” Although it’s known as the Old ’76 House, the tavern was first built in 1686 by Caspares Mabie as a home and tavern. Mabie was a local merchant turned inn keeper and the tavern was known originally as “Mabie’s Inn.” The Old ’76 House lays claim to have been built in 1668. During and before the Revolution, the tavern was host to patriots planning the separation from England. It was considered a safe ground and meeting place for the Revolutionaries. It came into ever-lasting prominence following the most notorious act of deceit and infamy in American history…the calumny of Benedict Arnold. Gen. Arnold had been posted to command of the fort at West Point, a strategic position atop the Palisades overlooking the Hudson River. Should a British fleet manage to move beyond that point, it could have meant disaster for the nascent revolution. Embittered because he felt he had been downplayed and not given the high honors and position he felt he deserved, Arnold conspired with the British command to turn over the plans for the defense of Fort West Point. Arnold’s contact was a young British officer, Maj. John André. He was considered a charming and handsome young man who was adjutant general to General Sir Henry Clinton, commander-in-chief of British forces in North America. Arnold was a brilliant and respected general and a close friend of Washington. But he had been reprimanded by congress and even made to stand before a court martial. Arnold met with André and gave him drawing of the fortifications and other pertinent information that would have led to the collapse of the American strong point. The British officer mounted his horse and made his way through the lines. His movement raised suspicions of several American troops and they stopped and searched him. In his boot were the plans for West Point’s defense. André was

taken to the tavern, now the Old ’76 House, following his trial at the old Dutch church, a block away. He had been apprehended in civilian clothing, and as a result was tried, convicted of spying and sentenced to hang. André requested to be executed by firing squad as befitted his position. Hanging was for common criminals and lower caste people. The request was turned down by Washington and the Major was hanged near the ’76 House. A local woman threw a handful of peach pits into the shallow grave in a sign of disparagement to the spy. Today several documents dictated by André and then signed by him, hang on the walls of the Old ’76 House. So, taken by the young officer, Washington commented: “He was more unfortunate than criminal. An accomplished and gallant officer.” An amazing tribute to an enemy soldier. Today he is a hero in England and respected in the

United States. Arnold was disrespected on both sides of the Atlantic and died a despised man. George Washington used the tavern for his headquarters while in the area and many of the Continental’s battle plans were drawn up there. One day while Washington was at lunch he looked up and saw a picture of his former friend-turned-traitor, Benedict Arnold, hanging over the fireplace. Incensed, Washington rose, went to the fireplace and turned the drawing upside down. It remains in the position to this day and his name still stands for treachery. Sitting in the tavern, you can feel the history and, if you try hard enough, see the spirits of the founding fathers meeting there to plot independence. And that might not be just your imagination. In 2012 a group of paranormal investigators looked into alleged happenings there. Their decision was that spirits inhabit the Old ’76 House. Could it be Maj. André seeking redemption? Could it be George Washington planning to meet with his officer to discuss coming battle plans? Is that man in Colonial garb and white wig a reenactor or a spirit of the past? If you are adventurous, request a seat at Table #2. That’s where most paranormal incidents are alleged to have taken place. Try placing an order for yourself and your guests…and whomever else might suddenly appear. You decide.

Become A Listener During the month of March, I decided to create a space of equanimity in my life by balancing how I listen and speak. Many of you may have created a sacred space in your homes to pray, listen, meditate and move. Some have a space between your bed and dresser but you made it work during these past months of confinement. I have never really mastered the art of conscious listening until recently. I am still a beginner but I am learning to tune into the sounds and people around me. The profound essence of

being quiet. The art of deep listening is a skill. For some it comes naturally and yet for others we need to train our ears to listen and our tongues to silence. How do we cultivate the capacity to listen to one another without judging or interrupting the person speaking? Imagine a world where you truly held space for one another, cultivating the ability to be quiet without having to voice your opinions. When you become attentive to each person you meet, you will begin to devel-

op sincere listening skills. Are you ok with the uncomfortable silence when there is nothing to say or do you feel the need to fill the gap with words and thoughts? Some people are naturally quiet and able to listen without an agenda. When they are present for you and are not thinking about what they want to say when you finish speaking. They are open and thoughtful. It is a rare quality and profound. You will find these people to be trustworthy and authentic. When you encounter deep silence, sound, and space around your body, you may become more receptive to the sounds you hear around and within you. Begin to listen with your whole awareness, embodying your entire environment. You will find peace and perhaps a sense of the mysterious sacred within. To be at home with yourself is a beautiful gift. How many people do you know in your life who are really good listeners? Are they present, interested, honoring, understanding, never interrupting,

quiet, authentic, and have unconditional presence? The first step to becoming a good listener is be alone with yourself and try to listen inwardly. Be a friend to yourself and then you can be present for your friend, spouse, neighbor or stranger. When I go to church it is my sanctuary of quiet and thought. The priest speaks so eloquently, full of compassion and wisdom, always providing a place of refuge. They teach us how to be courageous during these difficult times, encouraging us to do good deeds and be of service in our community. I am grateful for this one hour of divine grace giving me hope and faith. My wish is for you to have someone who listens and gives you their undivided attention. Become a good listener and one day someone will listen to you. May you be safe, may you be healthy, may you be free of suffering and may you live with ease. Take time to listen to the birds, the ocean, the wind and all the beautiful sounds around you. We are here to live our lives fully.

LWA Edged In Championship By David O’Keefe

The Lawrence Woodmere Academy Tigers came up just short in the PSAA Boys Basketball Championship game on Friday, March 19. The Tigers lost 6461 to Portledge in a very tense and close game. Daniel Carrion (12th) drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to tie the game at 61-61. A couple of contested fouls ended up deciding the game as Portledge eked out the victory by 3 points. Daniel Carrion (12th), Pol Canals (12th), and Nabiyu Matheu (12th) were named in the All-Conference Team. Rockaway natives Michael Coletta and Raphael Tawil were instrumental in energizing this program through very difficult times. Coach Brett Tawil was instru-

mental in orchestrating this hybrid season. Coach Tawil and his Tigers were number 1 seed heading into the playoffs after victories against Stony Brook, Knox, and LuHi (twice). The whole season was a victory for LWA and its graduating seniors. We never thought we would see a basketball game played in the gym anytime soon. To get six games played during a pandemic was a massive achievement in itself. We are extremely proud of our boys.

A String And A Pen Dear Enchantress, I have been a procrastinator all my life, and I'm so sick of it. I even make post-its all around to remind me, and I ignore them and wait until the last minute. I really want to change, and I see how when I wait until the last minute, I get excited and my ideas are flowing so fast. I know this is your specialty and wish I could be totally different and make it easy so I wouldn't be up the night before doing work. I work for a nice company, and I get paid well, and I am working from home, which I used to say was the problem. I didn't like

spending time with my officemates, but now I'm home and I have the same problems. What are some baby steps I can take so I can work easier and not be under the same kind of pressure I always have? Dear Last Minute Lucy, I'm glad you already know this is my specialty, so you may already know I am the world's biggest recovering procrastinator! My earliest memory is in the 2nd grade, so I totally understand you. So! Let's make it easy and get you started. Instead of a small square post-it, put up a piece of paper, with a string and a pen on it. Not on

your phone, (where distraction lives) on your fridge. Write one idea on it daily, (you can also put it in the bathroom) any place where you already have habits. If you think you have nothing to write, write "nothing." The "high" that you feel when you wait to the last moment, is an actual addiction, and this kind of addiction is based on a behavior, and behaviors can be changed. Along with the behavior, your mind has to be willing to be changed. Writing to me is a great step, the other step is to question yourself, "do you really truthfully, if you were really, really honest, think you can change?" Listen to your first answer in your mind. If you think "no," that's ok, can you be willing to be curious if you can change? So instead of going from "no I can't change" to "yes I can change," go from "no I cannot change" to "I'm curious if I can change..." Curiosity is a more fluid way to assess, instead of being "good" or "bad" or "right" or "wrong."

Celebrate that you write on this paper every day. Then whenever you do the project, bring your daily written note list and you'll see your body will react differently. If this first step works out well, repeat it again for the next project and give yourself a due date, (not a deadline, forget dead anything.) Then complete it early, and spend the next day doing nothing for work. Yes! Take the day to chill, replace the reward! To ask Enchantress Shane a question, or to apply to work with her email her at support@ enchantedembodiment.com

ROCKAWAY OL' TIMES By Katie Lucev Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr.

The ‘Iron Horse’ and ‘The Babe’ visit Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY - 1927 The year was 1927 and the New York Yankees had just completed a season where they set an American League record of 110 winning games with only 44 losses, and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs in 1927 set a single-season record, which would stand for the next 34 years. First baseman Lou Gehrig, ‘The Iron Horse’, had his first big season with a batting average of .373 and 47 home runs, and was the American League’s Most Valuable Player of the year.

After the historic baseball season concluded, both Gehrig and Ruth took advantage of the off-season to enjoy some of the fine codfishing offered by the Sheepshead Bay party boat fleet. These incredible and rare photos was taken on November 10, 1927 aboard the Sheepshead Bay party boat “ELMAR II”.

Standing from right to loft are Lou Gherig, Captain Gus Rau of the “ELMAR II” and Babe Ruth. They spent the day fishing for cod at the Cholera Bank off of Kingsborough Community College and the Rockaways. (Article courtesy of Kingsborough Community College)

FYI - COD = 'catch of the day' !!!

Creamy Chicken Marsala By Sharon Feldman

(Shared from Osara Recipes) Ingredients: 4 Chicken Breasts 1 package of Baby Bella mushrooms 4 Garlic cloves 1/2 cup Dry Marsala 1 cup Chicken Stock 1 Shallot Few sprigs of Thyme 2 oz Parsley 1 tbsp Butter All-purpose flour, enough to cover a dish, seasoned with salt and black pepper, for coating the chicken Instructions: Begin by sauteing the shallots and diced garlic in olive oil in a frying pan for about a minute over a medium flame. Then mix in the mushrooms, salt and black pepper. Continuously mix for about three minutes to cook evenly. Set

aside and start cooking the chicken in a separate pan. In a deep frying pan, add about two ounces of olive oil, the halved garlic clove, and the butter over a medium/low flame. Working with one chicken breast at a time, pat each side of the chicken over the seasoned flour until fully coated and then place into the frying pan. Fry for about four minutes or until golden brown. Once the chicken breasts are golden brown, flip over to the other side and fry for another two minutes. At this point, lower the flame and very slowly pour in the Marsala wine. Cook for about another two minutes over a medium flame to let the chicken absorb the Marsala flavor while allowing the alcohol to evaporate. Next, pour in one cup of the chicken stock. Continue to cook until it starts to boil. Once boiling, lower the flame and mix in the mushrooms from the other frying pan, parsley and thyme. For a thicker gravy, mix together about 1/2 a cup of chicken stock and a 1/4 cup of flour and pour into the frying pan. Mix all together and allow the Chicken Marsala to simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from the stove and enjoy with your favorite side dish.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING IN THE PANDEMIC WORLD By Eric Jayden

As people continue to live and get through the pandemic, and vaccinations are the #1 priority, are professional wrestling companies still trying to find new ways to deliver the wrestling experience to the fans? In the United States, the major professional wrestling companies are still not touring around the country and are only using network television and social media to deliver their product. The WWE continues to use it's "ThunderDome" concept, which is a state-of-the-art set located in Orlando, Florida with video boards that are set up throughout the arena that show actual fans watching the show live from their homes like a virtual video conference system. The ThunderDome resembles the NBA's virtual fan experience but instead of a

flat board facing cameras, they have rows and rows of fans with enhanced chants and cheering. It’s now used on all of the WWE's Brands. Now, here is the question: "Will pro wrestling ever start touring again?" Also, will virtual fans replace actual fans in seats? Is this the way we will interact with pro wrestlers? Is buying a ticket, taking a seat and having a hot dog and soda in an arena truly over? I personally hope not because nothing can replace the actual experience of watching a professional wrestling show live. I believe this is still a byproduct of the pandemic and once the pandemic is under control or completely over, we will return back to having live shows. Many fans have been weighing in on this new concept and so far, their opinion has been favorable with only the true wrestling purists not liking the

ThunderDome concept. But only time will tell if wrestling fans will remain loyal and stay watching the wrestling product under this Pandemic World we are living in or will wrestling itself start to lose its shares of viewership. The question of the week comes from Carlos R. in Bayswater and he said, "I am a big Lucha Libre fan and I watch many Lucha Matches from Mexico and I wonder why Lucha Libre is not shown more often in the United States." That's an excellent question Carlos, and here is the problem on why we don't see much of Lucha Libre here in the states. The American wrestling fan is used to the American form of wrestling which is traditional rules and format. Lucha Libre in general doesn't tell a story. That's not to say that there are no good guys or bad guys in matches but the way the

matches flow with the no tagging in and out and the blatant rule-breaking in front of the referee throws most American fans off. There used to be a company called Lucha Underground that aired on the El Rey Network that brought Lucha Libre to the American fans but unfortunately, they are no longer in operation. I am a Lucha Libre fan and I still watch it on various Network channels from Mexico. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a great week!
