Katz Likes The State Of The Borough Queens Borough President Melinda Katz delivered her first State of the Borough Address in front of a packed house at Colden Auditorium at Queens College last Thursday. And while the parking was a mess, the 50-minute speech was anything but. Under the theme “If it’s good for our families, it’s good for Queens” Katz stood on the stage and confidently welcomed the crowd in eight languages. The octolingual opening served as an appropriate greeting to an area that prides itself on its cultural diversity. “Our neighborhoods are home to families from over 120 different countries and speak over 135 languages,” the BP proudly explained. Lately, Queens has been generating a lot of buzz. It has quickly risen to become perhaps New York’s trendiest area. In fact, a few weeks back it was hailed as the top destination for travelers in the United States by famous travel publication Lonely Planet.

The Beep went on to note other publications that are claiming that Queens is hot and on the move, hinting at the same kind of gentrification that swept over Brooklyn in the past 10 years. “You may say you’ve seen New York,” Katz began. “But you really haven’t until you’ve experienced Queens.” Katz’s made clear that Queens as a borough is definitely on the move. It is has shed the reputation of New York City’s afterthought and has turned into one of its hottest areas. However, just because Queens is moving forward doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work to be done. Moving forward also means that neighborhoods now face the threat of being left behind. Rockaway, for instance, is considered to be one of New York City’s most attractive summer destinations, yet travel to and from the peninsula is certainly less than convenient. Add that to a lack of progress rebuilding after Sandy and you can see why residents

don’t want to see Rockaway miss the boat (sorry) as Queens rises. Of course the BP addressed these concerns from the stage. “For post-Sandy Rockaways and other low-lying communities in Queens, I insist on not just rebuilding, but rebuilding better and stronger. A key component of this is making sure that the voices of the people who know their community better than anyone else are an integral part of the rebuilding efforts.” Rockawayers will surely remain skeptical until they see Katz’s words put into action. Nobody knows better than the people of this peninsula that the quixotic rhetoric that is often delivered from the security of a podium means nothing until it is put into action. Prior to diving into her speech, Katz asked for a moment of silence in honor of fallen NYPD officers Detective Wenjian Liu and Detective Rafael Ramos who were killed in the line of duty late last year. A

Tubular Views – Product reviews Well the “Blizzard of 2015” didn’t pan out to be the bomb we were told to expect in snow fall but each and every blizzard brings insane waves. Tuesday was no exception with some easily double overhead sets rifling through the lineup. What’s most important about surfing these waves is checking your ego at the door and making sure you have the skills to deal with the extremely challenging conditions. It’s hard enough walking the sidewalk in 50mph gusts and 6” of slush, let alone trying to paddle into 10-12’ face waves with the same wind gusts in 40°F water, 23°F air and 10°F wind chill. The next most important thing is your gear. Here is a review of a few items that can either make or break

your comfort zone…and your session. WEST Lotus Wetsuit 4/4 Fluid Seam A rather impressive looking suit and all seams completely sealed, I was sold on this being a great suit… until I tried to get into it. Sealed seams are extremely important in the frigid temps. It prevents those seams from blowing out and creating holes and with winter water temps from January through to March staying in the 30’s, you don’t want holes ANYWHERE! Anyway, It took me a whopping 20 minutes struggling to get into this thing leaving me exhausted. Not to mention being trapped in the thing for 30 minutes and not being able to get out of it.

While it kept me warm during my session there was little flexibility in the suit. It was more like a 2 1/2hr resistive training workout, if I moved or twisted my arm or neck one way, the wetsuit forced me back to the position it wanted me to be in. OK, I’ll admit that it might be stock from last year and neoprene technology goes leaps and bounds each year, such as ISURUS Wetsuits using Compression Technology along with Hydrophobic neoprene that is water resistant, this suit also seems to add another 200% of weight to it from water retention. Word on the street is that a lot of brands are moving to this new technology so we will all hopefully benefit. But keep in mind the added costs this technology will bring. ISURUS suits are upwards of $600 while WEST wetsuits can be in the $200-$400 range. Why was it so difficult to get into? The entry area in this chest zipped wetsuit was so small with lack of thinner, stretchier neoprene. This also highlights why you might want to buy a suit locally and check it first rather than buying online like I did. $200-$300+ 2 stars out of 5 Xcel Infiniti Comp 7mm Rubber Dipped Booties I have pretty much bought and tried every bootie manufacturer out there. chase, well, except Hydroflex, don’t go there! This boot is INSANE! I have never felt so comfortable and my feet so warm in anything ever before. Even more important, it doesn’t even feel like it’s a boot with sole. It feels like a second skin so when you’re standing on your board you can literally feel the wax beneath you feet. With the boot’s rubber dipped outside, it’s using the same logic of keeping water away from your foot and reducing temps inside the boot, letting the therms from your body keeping temps toasty. Oh, and it’s by far the easiest boot to get on and off, and when changing ouside in freezing temps, this is a win-win! Best boot on the market! $69.95 5 stars out of 5

The Zen Of Shoveling causing the whole delay. “Somebody put my boots somewhere.” “Somebody took my hat.” If there’s a younger brother, too young to help, he’s often the accused. Mom’s are second. “She’s always putting stuff where I can’t find it.” This act can go on and on and usually involves everyone, all pissed off now, looking for the missing gloves or hat. When said item is located and the well-muscled athlete starts to head out to shovel, you’d think, mission accomplished. But no. No, no, no. What follows is a pathetic effort designed to do one thing: get the middle aged man who shouldn’t be shoveling to shovel. The strapping young man will shovel the top two inches of a 12 inch drift. He will shovel and put snow on the neighbor’s sidewalk. He will dump the snow around your car so you’ll never get it out. He will somehow break the shovel. He will do whatever necessary to drive the middle aged man to pick up the shovel and do the whole job himself. At this point, the middle aged man is boiling over the whole episode about getting the strapping young man to help and now he’s shoveling anyway. He’s angry and he’s shoveling. The smart man knows he should shovel without anger. He reads the Be Well, Be Happy column and takes a deep breath. He goes out to shovel and is one with the snow. He may have a heart attack but he will die happy because he didn’t bother trying to get a young man to shovel.

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE ROCKAWAY TIMES

000000

Why is that man shoveling when he’s got teenage boys at home? He could have a heart attack. Those kids should be helping him. Yeah, yeah, I know. Kids should be doing a lot of things, but they don’t. For those wondering about the man without a snow blower, the man without a generous neighbor with a snow blower, he’s out breaking his back and risking a coronary because he knows this is inevitable. And really, he’s just being smart. He could spend time telling those teenagers (or post-teens like good-for-nothing other than emptying the fridge 20-somethings) that they have to get out of bed and help. And he could listen to them say, I will, I will, in a little while. And he could answer them with – no, I want you to start now. And then he could listen to them whine and say they’ll do it later, they promise. And he could yell and say, let’s go now! And then he could watch them start to get out of bed. He could watch the strapping young man or men take six minutes to swing one leg off the bed. And then he could say louder, move! And then he would hear the kid who plays sports and moves at the speed of light to get ready to go out on a weekend night moan, I am moving! The next half hour – at least ! – is designed to drive the middle aged man insane. The strapping young man spends the time “looking” for whatever clothes item will forestall the actual act of going outside. “I’m looking for my gloves!” they whine if told to hurry up. Or they imply or accuse “somebody” of

Sweet News! Madelaine Chocolate Gets Big Money to Stay news for all of us.” With the grant, the company will be able to replace lost equipment and increase production, so that it can get closer to where it was before Sandy hit. It will also allow the company to double its workforce over the next two years. They will re-hire many of their former employees who were laid off after Sandy and will work with Workforce1 to hire locals for the remaining positions. The company currently employs 113 people and plans to add more than 110 with the additional funding. Farber says local politicians like Congressman Gregory Meeks, State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder helped push the current administration to make this grant possible. “This encouraging announcement sends a positive message to residents of the Rockaways and in neighboring communities who are still recovering from the devastation caused by Super Storm Sandy. this grant to return to its pre-storm operations, more than doubling its workforce,” Congressman Meeks said. “These jobs will help create more economic opportunities for hundreds, potentially thousands of families in the region and brings us one step closer to healing our community.” Due to the size of the company and the City raising the cap on funding available to small businesses through the CDBG-funded HSBLGP, Madelaine is eligible for $9.7 million from the program and will be qualified for $2 million from NYCIDA if they create and maintain at least 110 full-time jobs and another $1.5 million if they create and maintain at least 160 full-time jobs in Rockaway. Madelaine must also remain in Rockaway until at least 2025. “It took 66 years to build the company and just a few hours to destroy it. Now, just two years down the road, without much assistance other than our ability to borrow from Small Business Services, there is still a very long road ahead but that road is made possible by this grant,” Farber said.

“It has been a long time since the storm, but this is a wonderful development and we certainly are very grateful and excited and you can feel that throughout the factory,” Madelaine owner Jorge Farber said. “We have come to realize with things like this, that you’re really appreciated and we’ve received a great feeling of appreciation from our neighbors just over the fact that we were able to reopen. We’re delighted by everything.” Hurricane Sandy devastated the company, leaving it with $50 million in losses from damaged equipment, property and a $10 million loss in inventory alone. Madelaine Chocolate officially opened with limited capability in October 2013. In February 2014, it was announced that the building at 9603 Beach Channel Drive was up for sale and the company may be moving, since it didn’t have sufficient funds to recover. The grant will allow Madelaine Chocolate to remain in Rockaway. “This is our community. We live here as well. We have always expressed our wish to stay in the Rockaways,” Farber said. “We really did not want to move, so this is certainly great

How sweet it is! After being awarded a $13.2 million grant from the City, Madelaine Chocolate Company is here to stay. The 66-year-old chocolate company, which has been operating in Rockaway for 48 years and serving as one of the peninsula’s largest employers, will stay in Rockaway due to a tremendous grant provided through the City’s Hurricane Sandy Business Loan and Grant Program (HSBLGP) and the NYC Industrial Development Agency. The large award was made possible after the de Blasio administration made changes to the NYC Department of Small Business Services’ HSBLGP over the summer. “Under the de Blasio administration, we have worked hard to turn around the Hurricane Sandy Business Loan and Grant Program - with 170 approvals, up from 7 last January - and also to ensure Rockaways residents have access to good jobs as the community continues to recover from Hurricane Sandy,” Maria Torres-Springer, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services, said.

You’re supposed to flip the paper upside down when you move from the regular part of the paper to this week’s Health, Wellness, and Fitness section! ***** The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraiser, “Take the Plunge” is scheduled for this Saturday, January 31 at 1 p.m. at the Colony Theater in Breezy Point. This is the 15th annual plunge for brave and supportive souls who have jumped in the winter waters to bring awareness to Cystic Fibrosis. The event helps fund life-saving research, education and care programs. Hats off to the McMahon family who spearhead the effort. Call Theresa McMahon at 914-374-6839 to get involved or visit rockawayplunge.com ***** After you jump in the water and you’re still not warm after a week, well, the timing will be right to go to the 100 Precinct Community Council Chili Cook-off at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday, Feb 7th. ***** Oh, why didn’t we think of this. Dan’s Papers, a Hamptons weekly, did a recent story about Queens and it being named top destination spot in 2015 by Lonely Planet. They compared Rockaway to Montauk and also suggested that Rockaway Taco call itself Tacaway. Even money says some hipsters start referring to Rockaway in just that way. ***** The Friends of Sean Lugano Foundation is holding its annual fundraiser on Feb 6 at 7 p.m. at the Altman Building in Manhattan. Sean, who went to Xavier, was killed on 9/11. The Foundation donated $50,000 to rebuild the St. Francis Schoolyard. The schoolyard, of course, is one of the more treasured things on the West End because of the Summer Classic in which hundreds and hundreds of kids take part. The Foundation could use your support. Please visit FriendsOfSeanLugano.com for more information. ***** Super Bowl is a trademarked name. Advertisers are not supposed to use “Super Bowl” or “Super Sunday” in their ads. So, the game they play on Sunday has to be called the Big Game or the Pro Football Championship or Pigskin Super Duper. The big bad NFL might sue if you dare use Super Bowl. ***** Okay, some of you folks are scared of computers and don’t go near one. But if you like Rockaway memories

and want to get a fascinating look at the past and present, have someone you know who knows how to go online and have them look up a site by James Supple. It’s called OldRockawayPhotos.com -- it’s a lot more than old photos! Force yourself, it’s great. ***** With the blizzard rolling in, maybe people had nothing better to do on Monday and Tuesday but go on Facebook. The news that Madelaine Chocolate was staying in Rockaway (and will be doubling its workforce) was met with raves. The post garnered 771 Likes and more than 60 shares. That’s a lot. ***** A proposal is coming before the Community Board about building a 9 story transient hotel on Smith and Foam Streets in Far Rockaway. Can’t quite get the location for a hotel. It wouldn’t be a homeless shelter, would it? ***** Making the most of the weather. Surfers and Stand-up Paddle Boarders were out in the blizzard and on Tuesday sleds were going up and down the dunes. ***** The Graybeards Dinner Dance was another huge success as more than 400 people flocked to the El Caribe last Saturday. New prez, Joe Keenan, did a fine job in taking over the hosting role previously done by Steve Stathis. Joe had the crowd cackling with a number of wisecracks. The generous support of so many helps the Graybeards help others. ***** Another snowstorm effect: The New York Blood Center is reporting a blood shortage -- over 3,000 units weren’t collected because of cancellations. Make your donation today. To donate, call 800-933-2566. ***** Announcements heard throughout the snowstorm: Alternate side parking is suspended. The parking meters remain in effect. Don’t forget to feed the meters. Really? ***** And how about the work crews –is that you, Skanska? – putting up orange cones at Beach 117th and Beach Channel Drive forcing traffic into one lane at a spot that buses and many cars make a left. The cones are up whether or not crews are working and safety buffs tell us they are supposed to put up flashing lights or signs that a lane is closed up ahead.

Warning For All

There’s Another View

Dear Editor: Let’s be clear: the proposed Port Ambrose, as an import natural-gas hub to be built 22-miles off the New York coast and 30-miles off the Jersey coast, will be great for New York & New Jersey, and good for Rockaway. We support passage of the proposal. Were the port to be placed five miles offshore we’d be adamantly against it as a security threat, and as a sensationally dangerous target for extremist terrorists from around the world. But it isn’t, and we’re not. A remarkable American drilling process, Horizontal Drilling, has now put the US back on a fast track to energy independence; and so we enter a new age of now-abundant, 50% cheaper, and a 30% cleaner alternative to crude-oil: Natural Gas. Canada and The United States have hundred year supplies we barely knew existed 50 years ago. This ‘nat-gas’ abundance is being exploited to warm our homes, power our utilities, and maybe someday soon, fuel our cars. We need infrastructure to transport and process natural gas, and Port Ambrose is one such proposed development. Naturally, the environmentalists – led by ‘big’ Al Gore, former US VP - are against Port Ambrose, and are whipping up hysteria against this project. Environmentalism (with a capital E) is a good thing, and yes, we need to be sensible stewards of our resource-rich state and nation, and the 1960’s disasters such as NY’s Love Canal, Cleveland’s Lake Erie and Pittsburgh’s Monongahela River woke the nation to the destructive power of unprotected waste discharges into our bays, rivers and oceans. Natural gas is cleaner and greener than crude oil, and until we’ve discovered a sensible, more efficient, and pragmatic alternative, it’s a fabulous step forward. Underground gas pipelines are common and in fact some 250,000 miles of pipeline crisscross America, and despite the hysterics, the pipelines have proven entirely safe. Is methane and nat gas combustible? Yes, of course, but so is the engine in your car. Other interest groups and parties are against this project because they say, Port Ambrose might soon flip the switch from an import hub to an export hub. OMG, break Russia’s back of monopolistic control over Europe’s energy dependence, and bring revenue into the US. There may come a day when the Marcellus Shale deposits provide surplus energy for our East Coast needs, and then we would be in the enviable position to export energy for great profits to the developers and New York State (& Pennsylvania too). Certainly, safety and safeguards are priorities for us. With Port Ambrose sufficiently offshore, no horrific catastrophe will obstruct NY Harbor, nor impact our beautiful beach-side community. The proposed underground pipe to the offshore LNG hub will hook up with an ALREADY-EXISTING and trouble-free underground pipe that links natural gas deliveries from New Jersey to New York. LNG transport is a common practice across the Mediterranean and the Pacific, and soon, we hope, across the North Atlantic!!! Dear Editor: The massive fire at “The Avalon” in Edgewater N.J. which left over 200 families homeless is sad and a wake up call for us all. The bright side is that there was not a loss of life. Let this be a lesson for all residents in our area. Let’s all do what we can to help ourselves and our families in the event of such a loss. Let’s make a checklist of things to do: 1-- Make sure that we have Homeowners , or Renters Insurance & that it is always paid up to date. 2- Contact The Fire Department and get the Handbook on Fire safety. 3-- Take copies of all important documents and safe keep them with a family member. 4- Write down all Computer Sign-ons and cell phone sign-ons and codes, in the event they are destroyed. weather permitting, and provided hay when needed. Wow, there’s a woman who takes her cow juice seriously! My standards are a tad looser…as long as it’s white, cold and passes the “sniff” test, it’s good to go! Speaking of milk, a gallon of milk now costs twice as much as a gallon of gas. How low can the price of gasoline get? Back in July 2008 a gallon of gas peaked in NYC at $4.41 and today averages just over $2 a gallon. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is starting to hint that retail prices may be close to bottoming out and that “It probably is just a matter of time until we see [an] increase in gas prices…” Have you been wondering why the decrease in the price of oil hasn’t translated into lower airline ticket prices? The major air carriers “hedge” their fuel purchase contracts to avoid extreme increases in fuel but these “hedge” contracts do not allow for cost savings when the price of fuel drops dramatically as it has over the past months. There is also no impetus for the major carriers to lower airfares when their flights are still leaving the gates fully booked. Privacy be damned! Everyone may say they are seriously concerned about privacy in our digital world yet, for the 3rd consecutive year, the most common password used to protect our electronic accounts was “123456” and following right after that was “password.” I don’t understand how people can be so lazy. But perhaps I shouldn’t be too quick to pass judgment. My personal password is “letmein” from the 1962 rock n roll hit by the Sensations! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Queens Borough President Melinda Katz reiterated her call for a permanent ferry service connecting the Rockaways to the rest of New York City at her State of the Borough Address last week. Unfortunately, Mayor de Blasio wasn’t present to hear Katz as he only returned to New York from his visit to France the night before. I’m sure he was tired when he arrived home, you know – rough night and all that. No big deal, he didn’t hear any of our pleas for the continuation of the ferry service either. City Council Speaker Melissa MarkViverito attended the Borough President’s address but I think she was otherwise preoccupied with thoughts about being the subject of a city ethics probe for accepting “free” assistance from a prominent city lobbying and consulting firm during her campaign for the Council Speakers position. Oh, and before I forget, Mayor de Blasio’s BFF in Albany, Shelly Silver, appears to have his own legal problems also. City Councilman Mark Levine (District 7 – Manhattan) has introduced a bill that will keep our beaches open past the normal Labor Day closing date until the first day of school and then every weekend until the end of September. The bill would also allow the Parks Department to open beaches on weekdays after the start of school at that agency’s discretion. This I would like to see. They can’t provide sufficient lifeguard staffing during the regular summer beach hours. Did you catch Antoinette DeMetropolis’s “Dishing the Dirt” column last week here in the RT? Antoinette requires her milk to be free from antibiotics, hormones and pesticides. Apparently Ms. Metropolis also conducts background checks on the farms where the cows reside to ensure her milkmakers are afforded a grass fed diet with full access to a pasture,

The ladies of Rockaway WISH are wishing to grow their membership. They are holding a membership drive from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 30 at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club to show what they’re all about and to recruit more women to be a part of it. Rockaway WISH is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 by Kelli Donohue Tirado. Inspired by the work of local male volunteer groups like the Graybeards and the Rockaway Irish Boys (RIBS), especially following the death of LCpl Michael Glover, USMC, Donohue started the group as a way for the women of Rockaway to come together for a good cause. Donohue gathered a group of friends, who first started holding meetings in living rooms. Now located on the second floor of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, the group has grown significantly in its more than eight years, especially after gaining recognition for their volunteer efforts after Sandy. The WISH acronym stands for Women Inspired to Support and Help. The ladies started by sending small gifts to local women affected by the war in Iraq, a tradition they have continued by delivering Mother’s Day flowers to local women who have a child deployed. They also started Treats with Santa, an annual Christmas gathering for children and families, where kids can make crafts and have their picture taken with Santa. The group also holds annual coat drives, baby item drives, school supply drives and more. Another big event they hold is WISH Rocks, which is a concert and dance party for children. The women also hold annual fundraisers and support other community fundraisers like the 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for Breast HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!

Cancer Awareness and Clare Droesch’s Crush Cancer Foundation. Following Sandy, WISH really stepped up by raising funds, collecting donations and setting up a donation center. The group was able to donate more than $100,000 to families in need. On a smaller scale, but perhaps even more important, WISH does small things to help anyone in need around the neighborhood. Beth Hanning, Communications Director for WISH says when they heard that a local woman was taking the bus to her chemotherapy sessions, the ladies arranged transportation for her and drove her to her appointments. “Little things like that are sometimes even more important than the bigger events we do,” Hanning said. “We just try to be involved in anything we can because we want to give back to the community that we all live in,” Hanning said. “It makes me feel better as a person to just be involved and it makes me feel good when people come up to you and say thank you. We’re only able to do this because of our members. After Sandy, we grew to about 450 members, but we’re in the two hundreds now and we’re trying to get people involved again. People are always saying that they don’t know how to help. How do you get involved? Come Friday and see what we’re about!” Ladies who are interested in learning more about WISH are invited to the general meeting in the upstairs lounge of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club (533 Beach 126th Street) on Friday, January 30 starting at 6 p.m. Guests will receive a complimentary drink. The annual dues to be a member are $50. If you are interested but cannot attend the meeting, visit www.rockawaywish.org or email info@rockawaywish. org for more information. Plenty was made about Winter Storm Juno and the chaos it was supposed to leave in its wake. Weather pundits began to pump the storm’s potential on the news and the people responded how they always respond to warnings of big snow: by clogging the aisles and depleting the stock of local supermarkets. At first thought it seemed that the storm would come and go without much of a fuss, maybe five inches, then predictions amplified to over a foot, and then estimating that it could be a record-setter. NYC officials began urging residents to take proper precautions on Sunday, asking those who could work from home to do so, and to avoid driving if possible. Then on Monday the Mayor announced that all buses and subways would stop running at 11 PM. City roads were also to be closed at 11. He announced that New York City schools were to be closed on Tuesday and ordered for all New York City buses and subways to stop running on Monday night. All signs pointed to this being one heck of a storm. In the end it wasn’t anything we haven’t dealt with before. About seven inches of powder fell on Rockaway and most parts of New

York were handed less than a foot. In Rockaway, sleds were soon going down the new sand dunes and surfers were riding very large waves. Snow began falling early Monday and didn’t stop until Tuesday, but it never seemed that the storm was ever going to take that next step from annoying snowstorm to the disaster that weather-people were predicting. Even though it wasn’t the two feet that some had called for, the 7-10 inch dusting did shut down most major thoroughfares in New York City and Long Island. By Tuesday afternoon the streets were open and things were on their way back to normal. While most of New York City was spared from Juno’s wrath, parts of Eastern Long Island saw up to 17 inches. Predicting the weather is a double-edged sword and is definitely an unenviable task -- overestimate a storm and people are complaining that they had to go out and buy a month’s worth of bread, underestimate a storm and people are screwed. So despite the “disappointing” snowfall, Winter Storm Juno served as further proof that in the postSandy and Katrina world, the media and officials have erred on the side of caution -- often overhyping forecasts.

Are you an artist looking for some seaside inspiration? Through the National Park Arts Foundation’s Artist-in-Residence program, select artists will have summer day access to the exclusive Breezy Point Surf Club and the Silver Gull Beach Club to practice their art. The Artist-in-Residence program is designed for all types of artists to pursue their particular art form while at the beach. Between 4-8 artists will be selected to practice their art at the Breezy Point Surf Club or the Silver Gull Beach Club. The artist will have full access to each club’s amenities during the day for half of the summer. The artist will be able to use the club resources to create work inspired by the landscape. The first residency takes place between May 23 and July 11 and the second session takes place from July 12- September 1. All candidates must have merit or experience in one of the following arts: any two dimensional artwork, sculpture, music, writing, performance art, film, and/or photography. Any performing arts will also be considered. If selected, art-

ists must have their own supplies and materials and their own transportation to the clubs. The artists may present a minimum of one public program to club members in the form of a workshop, concert or lecture. An artist can choose to donate a piece to the NPAF after their residency. The prospective candidates must present a cohesive body of work, a complete application including their resume, and proposal of their residency project. Applications for the first session are due by April 1 and by June 2 for the second session. To apply, go to http:// www.nationalparksartsfoundation. org/#!apply-/c1as3 National Parks Arts Foundation (501c3), the non-profit that organizes the programs, is responsible for the management and development of Artist in Residence programs, Workshops and Museum Loans in United States National Parks, which include National Recreation Areas, National Monuments and other park venues. INSIDE REAL ESTATE

What to Look for When You Do Your Apartment Walkthrough Moving into a new place is exciting--especially once you get past apartment hunting and it’s time to sign your lease and move in. While you may be anxious to start unpacking once you get the keys, it’s important that you do a thorough apartment walkthrough with your landlord to make notes of anything that isn’t perfect. Not only will pointing out problems now make them more likely to get fixed in a timely fashion, but it will also limit your liability when the time comes to move out. While glaring issues like broken windows and cracked walls are likely to be obvious, there are other spots you should check when doing your walkthrough that you might not have considered. Here is a room-by-room breakdown of all the things to look for so that you don’t end up missing something major. Every Room. Start off by going through the entire apartment checking for dents, scratches, or cracks in the walls. You should also look at the flooring (whether it’s carpet or something solid) and check for any damage or stains that

you don’t want to be held accountable for. While looking at the floor, see if you notice any signs of bugs or rodents. Make note of any droppings, holes, or chew marks and ask your landlord about any pest control issues immediately. Next, open and close every door and every window to make sure the mechanisms are all working correctly. You should also test all of the locks for your security. Stand in front of all the windows and feel for drafts. If you notice air coming through, try to figure out where it’s coming from and if it’s something that can be easily sealed. As you walk through, you should turn on and off every light switch to make sure there are no wiring problems and check the light bulbs. It’s also a good idea to bring a portable electronic device like a cell phone charger with you and test out every outlet you come across. Look around for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and press their test buttons to make sure they are functional as well. You should also take this opportunity to ask your landlord about the fire evacuation plans (especially if your apartment is in a tall building) as well as loca-

tions of any fire extinguishers. Bathrooms. Bathrooms may be small, but they’re full of equipment that could be malfunctioning. Make sure to flush every toilet and turn on every faucet and showerhead during your walkthrough. You should also try turning on the hot water to make sure the heater is working correctly. Open up all cabinets (including the medicine cabinet) to check their hinges, and look for any cracks in mirrors. Next, squat down next to the toilets and below sinks looking for drips and smelling for odors. Finally, check the shower for any signs of mold. Black mold, especially, can be deadly if it’s inhaled for too long. Kitchen. Like the bathroom, the kitchen tends to have several spots where trouble could be lurking. Turn on every appliance--from the dishwasher to the oven to the microwave--to make sure they are all functional. You should also check to make sure that both the fridge and freezer seem to be running at a good temperature. If the kitchen sink has a garbage disposal, try running the water and turning it on to make sure it doesn’t make any odd noises. Check under the sink the

same way you did in the bathroom to see if you notice any leaks, odors, or signs of mold. Open all drawers and cabinets to check that their mechanisms are working smoothly, and closely examine countertops for any chips or dings. Bedrooms and Living Room. Even though they are the larger rooms in your home, fewer things tend to be wrong with bedrooms and living rooms. You should make sure that window coverings such as blinds or shutters work well and can easily be opened and closed. If the apartment has a wall unit or window unit for the air conditioner, check to see if it is fully functional as well. While this guide to your walkthrough should help uncover the most common sources of strife for new renters, every apartment is going to be slightly different. As a general rule, make sure you leave no stone unturned when checking out your new place--even if it takes a while to go over everything with a fine-toothed comb. Once you know where the trouble spots are (if there are any), you can take the next step toward making this apartment your new home.

This antique Rockaway postal was mailed from a post office on a rock formation jutting out of the ocean where our peninsula formed eons later. LOL. The image is of our neck of the woods (so to speak!) during the Paleozoic era, in geological terms; when jagged rocks and high rock formations were all that existed. Bedrock today is seven to eight hundred feet below the surface.

State Of New York Sports By Michael Leboff

While politicians are delivering bloated State of the (whatever they’re in charge of) Addresses, we thought it wise to deliver our own hyperbolic address, taking on the State of New York Sports. The State of New York Sports may seem worse than it really is. If you drop into a sports bar in the area, you may hear a regular lament at the state of the sports in New York, but there are some silver linings. New York sports fans are infamous for holding their professional teams to an almost impossibly high standard, which means that anything short of ticker tape will disappoint. However, the future doesn’t look too, too bleak -- at least we hope. Despite missing the playoffs for the second straight season, the New York Giants look like a prime candidate for a bounce back in 2015. Odell Beckham Jr.’s meteoric rise after returning from injury looked like the sign of a once-ina-generation type of player. Additionally, Eli Manning looked to be getting back on track in Ben McAdoo’s offensive scheme. The Jets also have reason to believe things will get better going forward. Fans were emotional over losing Rex Ryan as head coach, but Todd Bowles seems like a good fit and has the pedigree to back it up. The Jets also mercifully relieved general manager John Idzik of his duties in favor of Mike Maccagnan, who has thus far said all the right things. Their quarterback situation remains a mess but hey, you’ve gotta start somewhere. Things don’t look as fun for our indigenous basketball teams. The Knicks are a doormat and the Nets have played their way into irrelevancy. The Knicks do have a good chance to land the top pick in the draft and are shedding salary like a bad habit, so there’s that. I’m actually pretty optimistic for

Page 21

THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015

BUSINESS DIRECTORY

both New York baseball teams. Matt Harvey’s return and the rise of their young arms means that the Mets should have one of the best staffs in the National League. Before Max Scherzer went to division rival Washington, I thought they had an outside shot at the division. Even so they should still be good enough to be in the wild card conversation. I predict meaningful games being played in September at Citi Field. As for the Yankees, they had a quietly effective offseason. Their lineup isn’t half-bad and even though David Robertson is gone, their bullpen figures to be solid with Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances on the backend. As for their rotation, Masahiro Tanaka is still their ace but newly acquired Nathan Eovaldi could be just what the doctor ordered for Joe Girardi’s crew. He’s got nasty stuff and if he learns the art of pitching he could be a terrific get for the Bombers. New York’s two best teams at this moment are the New York Rangers and New York Islanders. The Rangers are still a contender after making it all the way to the Stanley Cup last year, but the Islanders are an incredible story. After spending the better part of 20 years as the NHL’s proverbial doormat, the Islanders went into the All-Star Break leading their division. The scary thing is that this may only be the beginning for the Islanders -- as their core is still young and only going to get better. Fans on Long Island are lamenting that this is all coming to fruition in the team’s last season in Nassau County as the team is moving to the Barclays Center for the 201516 season. Despite what the backpages may have said over the past year, there is reason to be hopeful in New York, but then again these state of the whatever addresses usually tend to be quite dreamy...

ROM Physical Culture is designed for people who are committed to getting fit and healthy; learning new skills whether it be Olympic lifting, kicking and punching, submission, or bootcamp style fitness training! As Rockaway’s first multi disciplined Martial Arts and CrossFit gym, we strive to set the standard of quality training and community. Fitness is a lifelong commitment and we are prepared to help our members meet their goals through one of our many programs in a fun, supportive environment.

CROM is home to men and women of all ages with a variety of athletic and non-athletic backgrounds. We offer small group classes led by certified trainers at a fraction of the cost of any other personal training out there. Our fitness programming presents individuals of all levels with mental and physical challenges that we know, from real-world experience, will produce great results. Each class is different, exciting, challenging, and whether you are looking to learn a skill, get in great shape or jump in to competition, CROM is a great choice. While all of

our coaches know firsthand the hard work and dedication it takes to compete, they also understand that is not every member’s goal. While some feel a little bit nervous stepping in to a new gym, one thing you can be sure of is that you will feel like you are immediately inducted into a family. Our members work together as a team to get their training sessions done and feel a sense of camaraderie as they help cheer one another on. CROM requires only that you do your part in having the ability to see yourself accomplishing goals you have never imagined before!

While we appreciate the traditional health club setting, the cost of these local gyms and clubs don’t include personalized small group training. They can have thousands of members because the majority of members don’t show up. Our slightly higher pricing reflects our commitment to offering you the best possible personal fitness training around. At CROM Physical Culture, we charge our members less than $10 per class! Remember, we don’t just show members how to use a machine, we work with them, teaching new movements, focusing on specific goals and

cean Bliss Yoga Studio is here for your physical, mental and emotional health. There are many different styles of yoga and the benefits vary in each practice.

We learn what works for our bodies and truly what makes us happy and healthy. Virtually anyone can do yoga, including those who have limited strength, flexibility and energy. For those who are ill or injured, there is always something you can do on the mat to help with the healing process. Align and Flow Yoga is wonderful for students who want flow in their practice but with alignment. You will get alignment cues from the teacher and from there you will flow with your breath into the different poses. You will hold some poses for strength and flexibility. This practice can be very challenging, working on your core, hips, spine and your entire foundation. It feels wonderful for your entire body and gives you lots of energy. Each class is unique and different. Restorative Yoga is a special practice designed to allow your body to

relax in poses supported by bolsters, blankets and blocks. It has tremendous therapeutic healing properties. Allowing the body to open, restore, renew and rejuvenate with very little effort. For some, letting go while in the pose can be the most challenging job. You learn to relax. Yin Yoga goes deep into the fascia, connective tissue, of the body by holding poses for 2-5 minutes. Practicing this style of yoga encourages the connective tissues to stretch and opens up blocked areas. We are constantly lengthening our muscles but do not pay attention to the connective tissue which is the sheath that covers the entire body. Gentle Yoga is a style that anyone can do. This class will go at a slower pace, focus on alignment and breathing, walking into poses. You will become stronger and more flexible with practice. Be aware of all the different prac-

tices of yoga, so you can choose what best fits your body, mind and spirit. It is life-changing and so healthy. You can do it for the rest of your life. DIRT Pass the Peas, Please By Valerie Dare

I’d like to start off today by printing a retraction to a section of my last column. In that column, I said I was doing this alone, and that is not exactly true. My husband, Joe, has been very supportive, tolerant and helpful every step and through every season. He has indulged my planting whims and was the calm I needed when my Cucuzza (if you have any Italian blood in you, you may know it as “Googootz” or Italian “snake squash”) grew to horror movie proportions and took over my entire backyard. Yes, he is very supportive, except when it comes to peas … Peas are my favorite vegetable.

When I pop a fresh pea into my mouth, it’s like eating Springtime. I can smell green grass and see little brown, fluffy bunnies hopping around. I can feel the sun and that gentle spring breeze we all know and miss in these winter months. No, there are no drugs involved. Just peas. They make me happy. I’m talking fresh peas … not canned or frozen. I bet most younger people have never tasted a fresh pea. And, let me tell you, there is a huge difference. I decided, in my second year of planting, that I wanted to grow peas. I knew absolutely nothing about them except that I love eating them and they come in pods. I didn’t know that they grew on vines. I didn’t know

what time of year was best to plant them or how long to harvest. And Joe was completely against my peagrowing … No, No, No! But I bought seeds and planted them anyway. It was only after they started growing, and creeping along the dirt, that I learned they needed to vine. I bought a trellis and tried to vine them, but that didn’t work out too well. The delicate vines break very easily. Needless to say, I didn’t get much of a harvest that year. But I did not give up. I tried again the following year and every year after that. I’m learning and getting better and better. 2014 was my best pea harvest yet … I had enough to make my all-time favorite dish, pasta piselli (or, as we called it in Brooklyn, peas and macaroni). I was in heaven! Eating a meal made with fresh peas, tomatoes and basil right from my own backyard … that’s livin’. Peas are low-fat but high everything else. A cup of peas has less than 100 calories but lots of protein, fiber and micronutrients. They also have high levels of antioxidants, including flavinoids and alpha and beta-carotenes. Vitamins C and E, and a good amount of the antioxidant mineral zinc, are also found in this amazing food. Peas have strong anti-inflammatory properties, too. Excess inflam-

or what shape you’re in (or not in) you will get enormous benefits from a regular Hot Yoga practice. You’ll be amazed by how incredible you’ll feel after 1 class! So get psyched to detox, lose weight, reduce stress, increase energy, improve balance, concentration, heal injuries and experience this miracle yoga for yourself. Willingness is the key. 95% of the practice is simply getting to a class! So just show up well-hydrated and on an empty stomach. Be prepared to sweat, smile and cry tears of joy and don’t wait too long to make a positive change to your life. Our flyers with the class schedule are all around the ‘hood. If you have any questions or concerns visit the website: HotYogaRockawayBeach. com or call 718 945-YOGA (9642).

Page A9 mation has been linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Peas are a hard-working crop and really improve the soil, fixing nitrogen that will feed future crops. They are easy to grow in cool seasons, which I didn’t know until last year. Your soil should be at least 45 degrees F before planting your peas. They like moist soil, so be sure the soil is damp yet well drained. Fertilize the soil when you first put the peas into it and fertilize again once you pick the first crop. Garden peas are picked when their bodies are nice and swollen. Other types can be harvested every one to three days and are ripe enough when their bodies snap like string beans. When your harvest is done, leave the roots in the soil, and they’ll continue to do good things. There are so many varieties of peas to choose from … snow peas, snap peas, shelling peas. And each of those categories is broken down further. Now I have the whole winter ahead of me to do some more research and continue my search for the perfect pea seed. It will probably take me till spring to decide. So, have some fun growing peas this season. I guarantee you’ll enjoy the harvest.

Come Sweat It All Out In The Hot Room And Catch The Yoga Buzz...

he word yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. It is the union between the body, mind and spirit. Crank the heat up to 100+ degrees, add humidity and you’ve got Hot Yoga!

The room is heated intentionally to warm the muscles allowing you to work deeper in a shorter amount of time, seeing results faster. Heat takes the trauma out of stretching, heals and helps prevent injuries. Your skin is the largest eliminatory organ in your body and sweating is the fastest way to detox. The heat combined with the set sequence of postures is what makes Hot Yoga so special. Don’t let feeling nervous, scared or even a little intimidated stop you from coming to class. Know that everyone has had their first class and survived it! And came back. You may have to sit down (many times) and that’s totally OK. In a few classes you will get used to being in the heat and actually embrace it. You might even get addicted to it. Regardless of your level of fitness,

t Zwerling Ophthalmology, our patients often ask us what they can do to try to prevent problems with their eyes. There are many eye problems that can cause permanent damage to vision. We are lucky to live in a time and place with incredibly advanced technologies, medicines, and surgical techniques. Not too long ago, many of the conditions we can now effectively treat were causing serious vision problems for countless people. However, preventing eye problems is the most effective way to protect your sight.

Eye injuries are a very common cause of vision loss or even blindness. Research shows that wearing the proper protective eyewear can prevent about 90% of eye injuries. Many people know to wear safety glasses at work, but almost half of all eye injuries happen either at home or while playing sports! Prevention is also very important for many other eye problems. Children are especially at risk, since they often will not speak up if they are not seeing clearly. If amblyopia, or “lazy eye”, can be detected early, treatment is very effec-

tive. However, if the problem is not found when the child is young, the damage can be permanent. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that school age children should have their vision evaluated approximately every one to two years. The most common reason for us to have a teenage patient with a serious eye problem is what we call “contact lens hygiene”. Modern contact lenses are very comfortable, and often wearers forget that the lenses are even in their eyes! However, studies have shown that sleeping in contact lenses

only one night greatly increases the risk of serious infections that can permanently affect the vision. People of all ages can protect their eyes very easily with the proper sunglasses. Most of us know that ultraviolet light from the sun can seriously damage the skin. However, many of us do not realize that the sun can be just as dangerous to our eyes. Two of the most common eye diseases, cataracts and macular degeneration, are closely linked with sun exposure. You can get good UV blocking even with inexpensive sunglasses. Just make sure the tag on the glasses say that both UVA and UVB are blocked. Cigarette smoking is also closely linked with progression of cataracts and macular degeneration. If you are a smoker who has a list of reasons to quit, protecting your eyes is another good reason to add to your list. Diabetes is the most common cause of blindness for adults in the United States. If you have diabetes, or even if you are pre-diabetic, it is critical to have a dilated eye exam once a year. Early signs of diabetic damage can be detected during an examination long before

The Rockaway Times

you notice any changes in your vision. Diabetic damage depends on two factors: how long you have had diabetes for and how high the blood sugars are during that time. If you are diabetic, the best way for you to protect your eyes is to keep your blood sugars down! Finally, no discussion of prevention of eye disease would be complete without mentioning glaucoma, the most common cause of preventable blindness in the county. In fact, January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Known as the “sneak thief of sight”, most people who have glaucoma do not know they have it until it is too late. Once vision is lost from glaucoma, it is gone forever. The only way to know if you have it or are at risk for getting it in the future is with an eye exam. By following these simple tips, you can greatly decrease your chances of having serious problems with your vision. While diagnostic and treatment technologies are better than ever, the old adage remains true: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here’s to 2015 being a happy and healthy year!

ontemplating getting a laser treatment or perhaps Botox and filler injections? The decision to have a cosmetic procedure is not one to be taken lightly.

How do you decide which treatment is right for you and who should perform that treatment? With the proliferation of salons and medical spas offering laser treatments and other cosmetic procedures, patients have many choices as to where they can have these treatments done and who performs them. Frequently, these nonmedical facilities staffed with nonphysicians have no medical personnel on site and it is usually unclear the level of training of those performing these treatments. The following list will help you be safe while having a cosmetic procedure: 1) Be cautious about the location of the facility if it is not a physician’s office. Medspas or salons may be owned or directed by a doctor who visits the facility only occasionally. Therefore, it is likely to not have a physician onsite should something go wrong. Ask if there is a doctor on the premises to oversee the procedure

before having it performed. 2) Check credentials to be sure the doctor performing or overseeing the procedure is board certified in dermatology or another specialty with equivalent training and experience. Many medical spa personnel wear white coats and may operate in a very professional looking environment. This does not mean they are qualified to perform medical procedures. Ask about the individual’s training and whether they belong to a medical specialty organization. 3) Always ask questions, no matter how minor. What should I expect from the procedure? What are the risks of the procedure? Who will perform the procedure? Is this the right procedure for me? What happens if there is a complication as a result of the procedure? 4) Be certain the provider takes a complete medical history. You should be asked about any chronic medical conditions you may have, what

medications you are on including over the counter medications and herbal supplements, and any allergies you may have. You should also be asked about your tendency to scar or develop changes in pigmentation of your skin after trauma or inflammation. 5) If undergoing a laser procedure, be sure that it is the appropriate device for your skin type. Ask if the provider has experience performing the procedure on patients that have the same skin type as you. This is especially true for patients with darker skin who are at greater risk for burns from laser which can result in pigmentary changes and scarring. For this reason, it is best to have a board certified dermatologist perform or supervise all laser procedures. 6) Avoid having moles lasered off before having them checked by a board certified dermatologist. Many nonmedical personnel offer to remove brown spots including moles with laser. It is risky to do this in case the mole in question is irregular or cancerous and the appropriate treatment is to completely cut it out surgically. 7) Don’t choose a provider based on price. Many medspas and salons offer discount coupons for procedures performed by non-medical personnel that require training and experience to achieve optimal results. Saving money in this situation could end up

The Rockaway Times costing you a lot more in the long run if a complication occurs. 8) If you are having an injectable procedure, make sure you know what you are being injected with. There have been disturbing reports of patients being injected with products that are unapproved such as baby oil. Ask whether or not the product is FDA-approved and if it was purchased in the United States. If the provider refuses to disclose this information, seek the treatment at a more reputable facility. oday’s column is a continuation of my last column which dealt with recommendations for routine health screenings.

There is considerable controversy regarding breast cancer screening. For example, the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) both recommend annual mammography starting at age 40 while the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) a few years ago recommended screening every 2 years between the ages of 50 and 74. Most practitioners advise following the ACS and ACOG recommendations and also advise patients to do breast self -examination. In either case overdiagnosis (finding and treating abnormalities that are not a threat to the patient) is a common problem with breast cancer screening. A study done in Norway and published in 2013 found that overdiagnosis in breast cancer screening occurred in 10 to 20 percent of cases. Another study done in the USA and published in 2014 found that of 1000 women aged 50 and followed for 10 years, 0.3 to 3.2 died from breast

cancer, 490 to 670 had at least one false alarm and three to 14 were overdiagnosed and treated unnecessarily. Therefore screening recommendations will likely remain unsettled for some time to come. As for screening for cervical cancer the recommendations are fairly uniform. In general they are: age 21 – 29 – check cytology (Pap smear) every three years, age 30 – 65 – cytology plus human papilloma virus (HPV) testing every five years (or cytology alone every three years) and after age 65 stop screening if prior screenings have been negative for the past 20 years. The recommendations are the same for women who received the HPV vaccination. Women who have had a hysterectomy for benign reasons (i.e. bleeding from fibroids) do not need further testing. Many experts envision a future where cytology will only be done if HPV testing is positive. Home testing for HPV is on the horizon as well. The USPSTF has also recommended

against screening for ovarian cancer (issued 2012), pancreatic cancer (2004) and testicular cancer (2011) based on its finding that screening does more harm than good. They also found insufficient evidence to recommend screening for oral, skin and bladder cancer. It is my opinion however that screening should be done for these last 3 cancers as the screening is simple. Everyone should get an annual dental check-up (oral cancer) and an annual dermatology check-up. The annual skin exam is important especially for us Rockawayites (like me) who tend to get more sun exposure over our lifetime than we should. Remember that a darker skin color does not protect against skin cancer. Lastly, screening for bladder cancer can be no more involved than an annual urine analysis at your doctor’s office. Again I urge readers to discuss screening tests with your doctor to come up with a plan that’s right for you. This column is published biweekly. Questions and comments may be sent to mail @rockawaytimes.com. [Typo correction – last week’s edition contained a comment by Robert Miller in response to my column of the previous week regarding screening for

colorectal cancer. Mr. Miller mentioned that Cologuard, a home screening test, was also available. As my column noted, the American Cancer Society considers an annual fecal immunochemical test, or FIT of which Cologuard is one of several available tests, to be an adequate screening method. I incorrectly referred to the test as an immunodeficiency test. PG]

e are so busy adoring our young, fresh skin during our teens and twenties that we forget to take care of it.

We forget to apply sunscreen or wear sunglasses, and we eat junk food filled with sugar because we are young and feel invincible. Although a lot of damage to our skin occurs from mistakes made in our early years, our current daily habits can contribute to a less youthful appearance. Seemingly harmless actions like not drinking enough water, the lack of sleep, sleeping on our sides and even sipping your drink from a straw can all cause fine lines and wrinkles. Stress from work and our everyday routines start to become present in our complexion through dullness and uneven texture. Due to volume loss in our face we notice more sagging skin around our neck and jawline. The aging process begins on a cellular level as early as age twenty and continues until we start noticing early signs of fine lines and wrinkles around our mid-thirties. Once you hit the age when you really start to notice signs of aging and feel the desire to turn back the clock – you can! Its never too early to start taking care of our skin and receive education on how we can prevent damage by proper use of

sunblock and even initiating use of antioxidants. These initiatives should not replace your annual skin checks from a Dermatologist, but this will only help reinforce a healthy bright complexion. Medical Spas have now become the go to place for both women and men looking to reduce signs of aging without getting plastic surgery. At Nicole Frontera Beauty, we can help reduce your signs of aging. We offer something for everyone. If injections of Botox and dermal fillers are not for you we can achieve great improvements in skin tone and texture just by incorporating a nighttime retinol cream into your regimen, or even just scheduling regular medical-grade facials designed to make obvious changes and improvements in your skin. Laser Skin Resurfacing treatments, chemical peels and photofacials reduce age spots, brown spots and wrinkles while firming and improving overall skin texture. We also have recently introduced Ultherapy® which is an ultrasound treatment that tightens sagging skin on the face, neck and décolletage to give a younger and firmer looking complexion. Frequently

I am delighted and honored to be asked to write a brief article about one of the greatest health scourges in this country. A few sobering facts about diabetes: 29.1 million people or 9.3 percent of the U.S. population have it. twenty-one million of these are diagnosed but 8.1 million are not, thus 27.8% of people with diabetes do not know they have it. Unchecked, it is a silent destroyer of almost every body system, doing its damage under the radar. It can be treated and well managed by healthful eating, regular physical activity, and medications to lower blood glucose levels. Another critical part of diabetes management is reducing cardiovascular disease as well as other risk factors such as hypertension, high lipid levels and tobacco use. Patient education and self-care along with a working relationship with your primary care provider as well as endocrinologist, cardiologist, nutritionist, ophthalmologist, podiatrist and vascular doctor are important aspects of disease management that help people with diabetes stay healthy and stave off complications. Those with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump to survive. This is the type seen in younger people but insulin may also be necessary in type 2, sometimes called adult onset. Many people with type 2 can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications. This second type is generally of gradual onset and starts as a condition called prediabetes where glucose values are starting to climb. It is a time of golden opportunity where diet, exercise and weight loss will keep in check or even reverse the onset of full-blown diabetes. In either case, good control of blood glucose is essential. Ignored or uncontrolled, diabetes will affect almost any body system and is associated with serious complications discussed below. Early detection via history and physical exam as well as laboratory studies and treatment of complications can prevent progression. A Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) exam yields a three month average of blood glucose

levels. Talk to your doctor about it. Monitoring with dilated eye exams, urine and blood tests, and foot and vascular exams are essential. Because the risk of cardiovascular disease is increased in diabetes and prediabetes, blood pressure and lipid management, along with smoking cessation, are especially important to avoid or postpone complications such as heart disease, blindness, liver disease, gum disease, hearing loss, erectile dysfunctioin, gastro-intestinal disease, skin pathology, depression and complications of pregnancy. Lastly, a word about lower extremity amputations, which tend to occur when the nerve damage of diabetes, with or without accompanying blood vessel disease, leads to foot deformity, ulceration and infection. In a brief 24-hour period, a seemingly little abrasion can evolve into a life threatening crisis. A person can walk around for days with a nail in the bottom of the foot and never realize it until an infection is well established. Daily self exam with a hand mirror is easy and mandatory. Work with your doctor. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a wonderful organization with dedicated people from all walks of life, desperately seeking both treatment and cure for this silent predator. Although the JDRF targets Type 1 diabetes, all sufferers of the disease will benefit from their work. Their goals include methods of regeneration of remaining insulin producing beta cells, as well as transplantation of an outside source of the same, the development of an artificial pancreas system and methods of stopping and reversing complications of the disease. hile many of us have already lost our resolve and resolutions are no longer resolute, it’s still a good time of year to set goals and take of yourself.

In Rockaway, we don’t have to look far to find gyms, yoga studios, spas, and health professionals. For this week’s special section in The Rockaway Times, we’ve invited an array of talented specialists to write. Some articles give insight into their business that you might get not from an ad and others offer practical advice that in some cases could save your life. While some might quibble with this quote by Augusten Burroughs, it’s a sentiment we like: “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters at all.” This section is devoted to YOUR good health.
