Lining Up for the Vaccine: Worth The Wait By Daniel Lynch

The line was long, but it seemed worth it to those who stood outside Beach Channel High School (BCHS) on Monday, January 18. As the COVID-19 vaccine continues to roll out, there have been concerns regarding the process leading up to vaccination. First, how does one make an appointment? Second, is it difficult to make an appointment? Third, when one does successfully make an appointment, how long does one wait in line to be vaccinated? While speaking to people on the line stretched out along Beach Channel Drive, answers varied. For starters, in order to be eligible, individuals must be either 65 and older, a teacher, school staff, in-person college instructor and/or childcare worker, correction staff, first responder, public transit worker, public-facing grocery store worker, and/or persons working and living in group homeless shelters and other group settings. An appointment must be made online or by phone to get the vaccine. The second question, regarding whether or not it is difficult to make an appointment also varies. Those accustomed to utilizing smart devices as well as the internet did not have issues. According to a Department of Education (DOE) employee (who did not want to be identified), “it was not difficult to make an appointment at all. We received a link from school and you were able to make an appointment.” For those not accustomed to utilizing smart devices and the internet, it was a different outcome. A person named Mary said, “It was rather difficult, I was getting directed all over the place.” Finally, how long must one wait in line to get the actual vaccine? This too varies. Those with appointments are ad-

vised not to show up too early. Over the weekend, some faced longer waits. According to a DOE employee waiting to be vaccinated, “the process has been a nightmare at BCHS prior to today.” But her experience on Monday was a little better. How long had she had been waiting? She responded, “only 20 minutes” and was soon called to be vaccinated. Besides getting an appointment, there were other questions to be asked such as, “Are you concerned about reactions?” The responses were mixed. Some were concerned about getting a fever, but others just offered a simple yes or no. Others were a bit more specific. “No, my wife and sisterin-law just got the shot,” one person said. “They had soreness in the arm after the first shot, and a headache after the second but that is all.” When asked if they had a vaccine preference, most people didn’t though one person wished a Johnson & Johnson vaccine was available because that is expected to be one shot only whereas Pfizer and Moderna each require a second shot. The Beach Channel site offers the Moderna vaccine. Here is the bottom line. The COVID-19 crisis has been extremely difficult on many fronts, but this is the first step in eradicating the virus. And from our quick poll experience, those first in line are grateful for the opportunity. To schedule an appointment, head to https://vaccinepod. nyc.gov/ or call 877-829-4692.

Water Rescue of a Rescue

By Katie McFadden

That’s one lucky pup! A dog that was rescued from Jamaica Bay is now back with its owner. It’s a good thing Scott and Carol DeNaro, owners of Harbor Optics, have sharp eyes! As they pulled in for work on Wednesday, January 20, the pair spotted a dog struggling in the bay behind the store. They quickly notified police and NYPD Harbor Unit Adam responded, quickly rescuing the panicked animal. The dog was brought to the

nearby Animal Hospital of the Rockaways, to be checked out as she awaited being reconnected with her owners. Just in time, the owners posted to the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook group saying that their dog, which they just got as a rescue three days earlier, had gotten loose during a morning walk on Beach 110th Street. As The Rockaway Times alerted people about the dog being found in the bay and where she was, neighbors helped direct the owner to the vet. By early afternoon, the pup, named Georgia, was reunited with her owner. “We are so grateful for the NYC Harbor Unit and Harbor Optics, heroes who saved Georgia today! It is nothing short of a miracle that she was spotted. We can’t thank you enough!!!! Thank you too to all the people on FB and on the boardwalk who when asked about her location offered their assistance and support. Rockaway is a wonderful community that we feel blessed to call home," Georgia's owners, Jason and Karen said. "I called the owners of Harbor Optics to thank them personally and learned that they arrived early today and spotted her in the water and initially thought that she was a seal! Had they not taken interest they would have never alerted the Harbor Unit after realizing that it was,in fact a dog, not a seal. We are so grateful to them as well. They saved a life today. Thank you all again from the bottom of our hearts." Photos by Scott DeNaro and Karen Dublin.

Pesach Osina Running In Special Election By Sean Boyle

Pesach Osina, hailing from Far Rockaway, is a candidate in the upcoming Special Election on February 23, 2021 to fill the seat vacated by Donovan Richards, who was elected Queens Borough President in November 2020. Osina will be running against several candidates to represent District 31 of Queens. Osina has lived in Far Rockaway for more than 20 years. He was a Community Liaison for former Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and currently works as an event coordinator in the Hospitality industry. In 2013, Osina lost a close election running against Donovan Richards. After the defeat, he worked for Richards as a Community Liaison to the Councilmember. Osina says Richards afforded him an opportunity to help build partnerships resulting in the procurement of resources for many residents across the entire peninsula and surrounding area.

Now, as a candidate again, he said he hopes to bring needed attention to issues specific to the Rockaways, including its coastline and the challenges that brings. The Rockaway Times reached out to him this week to gain his perspective on why he is running, what he thinks about the upcoming election for Mayor, and how he thinks his experience can help bring needed attention to District 31. Q: Why do you want to be in City Council and what have you done that makes you a good candidate? First, I appreciate you coming to talk to me. We love wearing Rockaway Times shirts! I’ve been a member of the community since 2000. The love of Rockaway was instilled in me by the community. I worked with the Jewish community center, including community organization and outreach as well as charities such as toy drives. After 9/11, we worked to start the CERT program (Community Emer-

gency Response Team) to help ensure the security of the community. Q: What's the most important issue in your district? Resiliency. We need a resilient district to have the services in the district be self-reliant and not have to rely on services coming from outside the district. We need to make sure we are ready and protected if there

is a natural disaster or hurricane. Q: In 2013, you lost by just 70 votes (to Donovan Richards in a Special Election). Do you like your chances better now? Why? Since 2013, I’ve really gained a lot of experience. Working with every community throughout the Rockaways and South East Queens. I would say my experience has helped me. I've engaged with the community in every facet both as a resident and private citizen. By reaching out to as many communities as possible and working with them to bridge the gaps between locals, I’ve come to know what is really needed. Who do you support for mayor? There are still candidates establishing themselves, the field is still opening. I have spoken to a few but I feel there is still a lot to see before picking a specific one. A March for MLK “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,- Martin Luther King, Jr. On Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18, some in Rockaway put his words into action, spreading light and love as they peacefully marched along the boardwalk. In a march spearheaded by Lou Harris of the Black Surfing

Association East Coast Chapter, dozens of locals walked from Beach 91st Street to Beach 116th Street to honor Dr. King’s legacy, and to support the Black Lives Matter and LGBT communities. The march concluded with a few words from Harris, elected officials and kids from the Black Surfing Association. Photos by Dan Brown.

***** The nation reached a grim milestone on Tuesday. The Coronavirus death toll surpassed 400,000. ***** We heard a lot of people saying they would be hesitant to take the vaccine or not take it at all. Well, there’s been no shortage of people who want it. Available time slots sold out like hot concert tickets. If you weren’t quick on the sign-up you were left waiting. We hope vaccine supplies and other logistics get straightened out soon (immediately). The concern right now is that already scheduled appointments will be canceled because vaccine supply will run out. ***** It looks like there will be a race after all for Queens Bor-

ough President. Donovan Richards won the November election to take over for Melinda Katz who became the Queens District Attorney. But the term is up in 2021 and that means a primary will happen in a few months. On Tuesday, former City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer announced he’ll be entering the race to become Queens BP. And we won’t be surprised if Elizabeth Crowley tries again. ***** According to a letter from Joann Ariola, many Queens Republican Party members have received notifications urging them to change their enrollment from Republican to Democrat before the February 14, 2021 deadline, ahead of the mayoral primary race in June. These notifications are being received via robo calls, text messages and emails. She said the calls are a “trick” to fool unsuspecting Republicans and urges party members to remain Republicans and others to join. *****

So far, we count 16 people running for Mayor. Ranked choice voting in the primary will be a huge factor in determining who gets the Democratic slot on the November ballot. If a candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, they win the election. With so many people running, getting 50% on the first go-around will be virtually impossible. If no candidate earns more than 50% of firstchoice votes, then counting will continue in rounds. To be clear, voters only go to the polls once. ***** Ok, here’s an idea. A GoFundMe campaign for Donovan’s Pub in Woodside raised more than $30,000 in just 72 hours from some 300 supporters. Why not have several GoFundMe campaigns with each one supporting five Rockaway bar/restaurants. Split the fund evenly. Fans of Rockaway from around the country could contribute. It might be just the kind of thing that could save places until things

The Rockaway Times open up. The Rockaway Times would be happy to promote such campaigns. ***** And speaking of businesses that could use a boost, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has reopened. It was a maddening exercise the first time around but if you managed to get documents together then the process should, should, be easier this time. Google PPP Round 2 and you will get a number of lending choices. This loan, like the first, can be forgivable, if you meet certain criteria. ***** In case you were wondering, Connolly’s is still for sale. The iconic bar with three total properties can be had for $6 million. So far, no takers. ***** If you haven’t already, please sign up to get The Rockaway Times by email. Go to Rockawayttimes.com and hit subscribe or just send an email to Mail@Rockawaytimes.com It’s the best way to never miss an issue.

What is Ranked Choice Voting? - YOU NEED TO KNOW Beginning with Special Elections in February, NYC will use Ranked Choice Voting in primary and special elections for local offices for the first time. You can rank up to five candidates in order of preference, instead of choosing just one. You can still vote for just one candidate if you prefer. If a candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, they win the election. If no candidate earns more than 50% of first-choice votes, then counting will continue in rounds. Each round, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. If your top-choice candidate is eliminated, your vote goes to the next highest ranked

candidate on your ballot. This process continues until there are only two candidates left. The candidate with the most votes wins! Some in Rockaway will get to experience ranked choice voting in the special election for City Council District 31. Early voting for those in District 31 will take place from February 13 through February 21 and election day is February 23. With a pool full of candidates, there will be lots of options to choose from. Among those running are LaToya Benjamin, Selvena Brooks-Powers, Latanya Collins, Sherwyn James, Nicole Lee, Nancy Martinez, Pesach Osina Shawn Rux and Manny Silva.

Small Biz Grant Program Begins Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, in partnership with the City announced the launch of the Queens Small Business Grant Program to provide resources to small businesses impacted by COVID-19. Through a generous $17.5 million donation from Steve Cohen, the City will partner with community-based organizations to offer $15 million worth of grants to Queens small businesses in need up to $20,000 to support operational expenses. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted minority communities. In an effort to support small business recovery, Borough President Richards worked with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide Queens-based small businesses and vendors that are minority-owned, located in one of the COVID-19 hardest hit zones or low-and moderate-income communities (LMI) with financial resources. In addition, the City will

dedicate 30% of the grants to support restaurants, street vendors and $2.5 million for further small business support later in 2021. Eligible applicants must: Be located in Queens; Operate as a first-floor storefront business, a second-floor restaurant, or a street vendor; Employed 20 or fewer full-time equivalent employees in 2019; Earned gross revenue of less than $1 million in 2019 or less than $3 million if a restaurant; Have no tax liens or unresolved judgement; Generated a profit or came close to breaking-even in 2019. Revving Up for Reality TV By Katie McFadden

It’s about to get real for The Rev. Reverend Richard Hartley, the longtime pastor and choir director of Haven International Ministries on Beach 84th Street, has a larger-thanlife personality fit for reality TV and now the nation will get to see it. “The Rev” debuts on the USA Network on Thursday, January 21. Hartley, who now resides in Valley Stream with his family, got his start in Rockaway. “I was born in the Hammels Projects on 81st Street,” he told The Rockaway Times. Hartley went to school at P.S. 183, where his late mother, Naomi, was a longtime teacher, and continued on to JHS 180 before graduating from Beach Channel High School in 1978. “That was when there were probably five channels on TV,” the pastor said. Now he’s going to star in a show of his own. “The Rev” on USA is set to debut this Thursday, January 21 at 10:30 p.m. and America is about to get to know Reverend Hartley and his family as he inspires his congregants at Haven Ministries and brings his choir to another level as its director. From a young age, Hartley was lifted up through spirituality and music. As a child, he grew up attending Bethlehem Church of God in Christ in Rockaway. “My mother made us go. I was one or two and our music talent developed there. At around five or six, we were singing in the choir, and my brother was playing the piano and I began teaching the choir at just seven years old,” Hartley said. After about 20 years of developing his talent, Hartley made it to the big time with an off-Broadway role in “Mama, I Want to Sing.” “I became the choir director in that production,” Hartley said. And it became a title Hartley would become known for around the world. “You want a great choir, call Richard Hartley,” he said. Hartley says it could be due to his unconventional way of directing. “It could be because of how I do things. I throw cups

or other projectiles at the choir singers. You have to know how to duck when you’re in my choir because something could be airborne,” Hartley joked. But it worked. Hartley’s knack for directing top notch choirs has been recognized on world stages and by some big names. He has traveled to Europe, Africa and even to Japan 150 times. He’s also worked with celebrity performers like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, among others, and has appeared on the Grammy Awards, BET, “The David Letterman Show,” “The Phil Donahue Show,” “The Donnie McClurkin Show” and more. But for the past 20 years, Hartley has brought his talents back to his roots. Since its inception, Hartley has served as the pastor and choir director for Haven International Ministries, a church started by his mother. “My mother, the religious woman she was, she had a drug problem. She drug us to church. Monday we got drugged to church, Tuesday we got drugged to church. Every day we got drugged to church,” Hartley joked. “She said we had to stay spiritually connected.” Eventually the dragging subsided when Hartley’s mother brought the church to home. “She decided to start a church

in my house with my wife, Stacey. At first there were three people. Then five. Then 10. Then 15. She drug me in and now I’m the pastor,” Hartley said, adding that his mother died five years ago, but he’s keeping her legacy going. “She was a bright personality and I think that’s where I got my sense of humor from. I’m continuing her journey,” he said. Eventually Haven Ministries found a more permanent home than Hartley’s living room. In 2002, the former Temple of Israel Synagogue on Beach 84th Street became home to Haven International Ministries. In addition to raising spirits and voices at the church, Hartley has been hard at work raising his two children at home, 29-year-old Jordan and 27-year-old Judea, along with his wife, Stacey, who all have musical talents of their own. Now his unorthodox ways of directing and parenting will all be part of the fun on “The Rev,” which Hartley says will be worth the watch. “We’re our authentic selves. We’re very spirited and there’s always something going on. These four personalities are bound by a thread of DNA and they’re all crazy, but all driven and loving and entertaining,” he said. Hartley says the show came about, simply by him being his authentic self. “I was always known for being eccentric. I’ve been told I’m an eccentric choir director. A friend of mine said ‘I want to film you in your element,’” he said. Hartley agreed. That friend sent the footage to another friend who knew someone that was an agent. “The agent was retired but he knew production people in California,” he said. As the footage made its way around those in the know, there was one thing production companies knew—Richard Hartley is a star. “Different networks were

vying for this show and after seeing the offers, we settled on USA. There were no Hollywood meetings, no auditions, they just bought it as soon as they saw it. USA has been a great partner,” Hartley said. Filming for the show began in January 2020, but as with most things, the coronavirus put filming on halt. “The world came to a stop and so did we. We were shut down for four or five months,” Hartley said. When filming was able to resume, things looked a little different. “Now we wear masks. Here’s this choir that can’t sing and now they have on masks. What am I supposed to do with this?” Hartley joked. But it all became part of the show. The premiere episode, which the RT got a sneak peak of, shows Hartley addressing the challenge of directing a choir in masks, in a humorous fashion. But as much as Hartley rags on his singers, he’s truly glad they’ll get some recognition. “They’re the stars of the show, not me,” he said. “They’re really excited.” The first episode also shows some familiar scenes. Those in Rockaway will recognize the church, but also shots of the Marine Parkway Bridge, the city skyline over the bay and other local aspects. “For Rockaway to get this level of national exposure, that’s just a fantastic thing for everybody,” Hartley said. Beyond Rockaway, Hartley believes the show will be one that anyone can relate to as his family will boost spirits around the country. “This is not the story of an African American family. It’s the story of an authentic family that happens to be African American. I want people to tune in. You’ll get a message of hope, that while rooted in faith, is not preachy, but the spiritual element is there. It’s also great escapism,” Hartley said. You’re gonna have a great time and you’ll come away from it feeling good.” “The Rev” will air on USA on Thursdays at 10:30 p.m., starting on January 21. SAVE THE EARTH – THE TIME IS NOW By T. Last

Have you heard of Greta Thunberg? She is the brave 18-yearold environmental activist who is internationally known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action against climate change. Let’s do our part to reduce our carbon footprint by adapting some of these lifestyle choices. Stop using plastic toothbrushes: One billion toothbrushes are disposed of annually in the U.S. alone and take 1,000 years to decompose. As they settle in the landfill, they release harmful chemicals into the air. They release the same harmful chemicals when entering our waterways. The solution is use bamboo toothbrushes which are 99% biodegradable and decompose in only a few months. Stop idling your vehicle: When a vehicle is idling, it is also polluting. An idling vehicle releases harmful chemicals, gases and particle pollution into the air contributing to ozone deple-

tion, regional haze and global climate change. Every gallon of gas burned produces more than 20 pounds of greenhouse gases. Also, idling is an ineffective way to warm up your engine. So stop idling now for a cleaner environment. Say “NO” to plastic utensils when ordering take out: Ordering take-out from your favorite

Rockaway restaurant tonight? Then why not ask them to hold the plastic utensils and unwanted condiments. Estimates put the number of plastic utensils wasted at 40 billion per year in the US alone. Plastic cutlery is one of those items that won’t get recycled even when you put it in the recycling. So stop these plastic contaminants from en-

tering our landfills. Say “No Thank you” to plastic utensils when ordering out. Note to restaurants…Please do not automatically add plastic utensils to orders leaving the restaurant. Most of these meals are going to people’s homes. Buy products that use recycled materials. As of 2020, all Hellman’s Mayonnaise products are made from 100% recycled plastic. Finding products that use recycled materials will require some reading of labels by consumers but normally this information is printed in large letters and easy to detect. Products made from recycled materials can be recycled again. So, reduce waste by reading labels and buying only products that use recycled materials. Use less hot water. Install lowflow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce hot water and save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

Make it a Date Plate By Katie McFadden

Time spent at home doesn’t have to be a drag. At a time when people are going out less and maybe getting tired of staying in, Annie Coughlin has found a way to make it fun. From movie nights to breakfast in bed mornings to date nights, she’s got a plate for everything with Date Plate. Date Plate offers a selection of plates full of goodies for any small affair for couples to small gatherings up to 12. For instance, warm up this winter with a “Cozy Night In,” a plate featuring cookies and confections, hot cocoa, marshmallows and cocktail sugar cubes that can help you make the perfect Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Mimosa, Cosmo, Mojito or Mint Julep by adding alcohol. Having a movie night? Grab a plate featuring popcorn, assorted candy and cookie shots with Bailey’s. Consider making it a date night with “The OG,” featuring assorted meats and chesses, crackers, jam and honey. Wake up on a Sunday morning with “Breakfast in Bed,” a platter featuring assorted pastries, seasonal fruit, jam, honey, tea and/or coffee, and bloody mary or bellini mix. And those are just a few of the options. Coughlin was inspired to launch Date Plate at the beginning of the year after the pandemic gave her a little more free time. Working from home, Coughlin was saving time on her commute, so she decided to use her newly found spare time to put more on her plate. She took the opportunity to launch her “passion project.” Coughlin says she’s had a longtime interest in event planning and often showed off her skills to friends and family, adding a special touch to any occasion, making her a go-to party guru. But as lockdowns made occasions limited, Coughlin got to thinking. “With being home since March during the pandemic, I had a lot of time to think about things being put on the backburner. Just because we’re going through some tough times, doesn’t mean we should pause

celebrating little milestones like anniversaries or birthdays. You’re stuck at home anyway, so you might as well make the best of it,” she said. So she decided to bring the party to people’s homes. “If you ask any friend, I’m the party planner. I’m the one who hosts every holiday and makes any excuse to gather people. I love entertaining and I love the look on people’s faces when you bring them something that you made,” she said. “Turning it into a business had always been in the back of my mind.” With more time on her hands and some encouragement from her husband, Matt, Coughlin decided now was the perfect time to give Date Plate a go. Coughlin began Date Plate on Instagram and Facebook, presenting her menu options and opening orders. So far, it’s a hit. “Last weekend, I had about 12 orders, which I was overwhelmed by at first. That was so nice,” she said. And it’s been growing ever since. Last week, Coughlin introduced a “Brie Mine” box just in time for Valentine’s Day featuring mini brie bites, parmesan, salami roses, chocolate covered pretzels, oreos and nuts, jelly beans, strawberries, honey and mini toasts, all served in a heart shaped box. Coughlin set a limit of 35 and as we go to press, she’s down to just five left.

To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

Order limits are required as Coughlin purchases fresh products to fill the orders at stores such as Stew Leonards and Trader Joes. “Grocery shopping is like retail therapy to me. While some people enjoy shopping for clothes, I love shopping for groceries,” she said “Stew Leonards is one of the most amazing places on earth. I get a lot of the ingredients from there because I know they’re made fresh, in house. I like to ensure quality and freshness. Some of the stuff I use is homemade, but for the majority of meats, cheeses, baked goods and candy, it’s all from stores,” she said. For this reason, Coughlin accepts orders at least 48 hours in advance to give her time to shop for the goods on each plate. In addition to the previously mentioned menu items, Coughlin says the plates can be totally customized and customers can request specific items to be in-

cluded. She also has some more tricks up her sleeve. For the summer, Coughlin is planning on a beach box featuring meats, cheeses and snacks to bring down to the beach rather than the usual sandwich. “Eating a sandwich every time can get old, so I’ll see what we can do to spice it up and create something that’s affordable and nutritious,” she said. A s’mores board, with a skillet full of chocolate chips and marshmallows to melt into a s’mores dip, accompanied with fruit and graham crackers to use as dippers, may also be in the works. “My mind is going,” Coughlin said. If successful, Coughlin hopes that Date Plate can grow into a full-time job. “I would love for this to be my full-time career in the future because it’s what I’m most passionate about. We’re only two weeks in and I’m taking it one step at a time, but I would love to see it grow and progress,” she said. Date Plate can be found on Facebook (Date Plate) and Instagram (Date_plate). Each platform shows menu options and orders can be placed through messenger or by email to: dateplate1@gmail.com. Orders can be picked up, or delivered for an extra $5 fee to Rockaway, Long Island or Westchester.

YOUTUBE KID'S SHOW TEAMS WITH BLACK SURFING ASSOCIATION A new family show called Surf Guard launched on YouTube under the channel, SurfGuardTV on Labor Day 2020. Set against the backdrop of the west coast surfing scene, Surf Guard is a protector of shore and the waves at Sand Surf Swim Beach and joined by his trusty sidekicks, City Planner Deb and Nerf. Together, the trio work together to de-escalate, keep things groovy and hold a watchful eye over the always menacing, Kiki The Kook. Surf Guard is all about being righteous to each other and community accountability. Drawing inspiration from shows like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Keith Roenke has created a hilarious microcosm of the Sand Surf Swim community, and in just two to seven minutes, each episode ends with a valuable lesson.

From not littering, to rebuilding smashed sandcastles, and even picking up after your pet’s dooky, Surf Guard is committed to creating positive change and won’t stand for anyone ‘kooking’ in his community. Made for kids and those who are kids at heart, the message of Surf Guard is rooted in kindness, adventure and silliness. The world and the country in particular were already feeling strained and divided when the creators began filming. Once in post-production, they im-

mediately saw the importance a show like this has right now. The Pandemic and the public protests of social injustices, shook the world and made them think how this can be reflected in the Surf Guard world. These are big ideas for a kid show, but the Surf Guard team is committed to creating positive change and believe it starts with what we teach kids and the language we use around kindness and accountability. “As we participated in local paddle outs in our own backyard of Rockaway Beach, NY organized by Lou Harris of The Black Surfing Association, we wrote and created a new character inspired by him. Lou has spent years developing and

creating a free surf and skate school for inner city children who didn’t have the means or opportunity. We reached out to Lou, became fast friends, and asked him to join the Surf Guard team for our holiday special in which we introduced him as Surf Ranger, an east coast version of Surf Guard. We want to continue to use this show as an outlet to promote inclusivity in the sport, in life and always convey a simple message of acceptance,” Keith Roenke, creator of Surf Guard, said. Starring Keith Roenke (The Actor’s Gang), Nikki Borges (IFC’s Comedy Crib Commuters), Kevin William Paul (Bottom of the 9th) and the sun as Moon. Season 1 is an eight-part series including our Holiday Special ending on a major cliffhanger on the fate of Sand Surf Swim; leaving viewers eager for Season 2.

A Whale’s Tale By Dan Guarino

It’s no fish tale to say many have come to Rockaway from elsewhere, reinvented themselves and found a home here. Rockaway’s unofficial mascot Whaleamina started life in 1960 as Jonah’s Whale in the Central Park Children’s Zoo. Thousands of children have memories of walking through it to see the displays inside. By the early 1990s, renovations were planned and the old whale was out. Rockaway Beach Civic Association member Sal Arena pushed to save it from the dump and bring it Rockaway. RBCA president Bobbi Hart spearheaded the move to a spot by the boardwalk across from Beach 94th Street in 1996.

A year later, the newly name Whaleamina was in sorry shape. A frequent target of vandals, half of its tail went missing, its structure was decaying. The homeless were frequently seen sleeping in its collapsing mouth, which was being held open by a garbage can. RBCA engaged local artist and then Rockaway Artists Alliance president Geoff Rawling to paint a ‘Pinocchio being swallowed by the whale’ scene on the newly sealed up mouth. Though originally approached to take on the whale’s renovation, he noted he’d only be interested if he could get “colorful and creative” with it. “They realized that the only way they would get me to fix her damaged exterior (was) to let

me mosaic the whole thing,” he recalled. In doing so, Whaleamina, named from a winning contest entry, became a glittering, evolving work of art. Friend and Rockaway Beach Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Liz Sulik encouraged him to seek project funding via a NYC Parks Foundation grant, which was matched by Arverne by the Sea. Rockaway folks adopted the new resident, donating time and materials to help. Many local schoolchildren have memories of painting and adorning the whale. It became “an ongoing public artwork” for nearly 14 years. Sadly, like so many things in Rockaway, in 2012 Hurricane Sandy swept Whalemina back out to sea. The only piece found

was the tail. But resilient as ever, she went on to star in a colorful children’s book about her life and adventures. “Whaleamina: The Rockaway Whale” was written by Laura Cryan and illustrated by Rawling. And she inspired the artist and others to create a new ‘Whaleamina,’ as colorful as her predecessor and, built on a boat trailer, completely mobile. She has been a hit at many a local event, even being there rolling along to celebrate Rockaway’s graduates in a grand June car parade. Not bad for a whale who came from afar to make a new life and find a new home, here in the heart of Rockaway. Photo by Dan Guarino.

Fish Oil Fan Dear Editor, Dr. Galvin’s column on Omega three fish oil was very interesting and thought provoking. After suffering a heart attack many years ago, my cardiologist started me on fish oil supplements because of their effect on triglycerides and cholesterol but, even more importantly, because fish oil had been shown to reduce plaque within arteries and thus reduce the possibility of strokes and heart attacks. This fact

Dear Editor: Many of our enrolled Republican Party members have received notifications urging them to change their enrollment from Republican to Democrat before the February 14th, 2021 deadline. These notifications are being received via robo calls, text messages and emails. Make no mistake: this notification is intended to trick unsuspecting Republican voters and thin the Republican enrollment in our city. Over the last few years, we have seen an uptick in Republican enrollment. That was evi-

dent in the last election cycle in which Republican candidates, including President Trump, garnered more votes than they had in other cycles. This tells me that the good people of this city, and especially the borough of Queens, are fed up with the Democratic Socialist agenda and are ready to turn the tables on those who seek to destroy NYC. Registering to vote or changing party affiliation is the right of any voter, but it should be done with great thought and conviction—not through the method of misleading to create an atmosphere of fear. Never before has it been more important to remain a registered Republican, urge others to become Republican and support Republican candidates for office. It is the only way we can ensure a two-party system of checks and balances and promote common-sense solutions for safer streets, successful businesses, lower taxes and better education. aware of the scam when she received a letter from the DOL telling her it had blocked a claim by a scammer who had applied for benefits using her information. The communication did not tell my relative what information was used or the name of the criminal. According to the DOL, droves of scammers are using identities and personal information likely stolen during data breaches at institutions like banks, insurance companies, or employers and using this info to file the claims online. This type of fraud often targets people who are employed because a person with a job typically won’t have an active unemployment insurance claim that would block a scammer from filing another claim in their name. The DOL stated that employees working in healthcare, government, education, and not-for profits have been particularly impacted and should be vigilant. You can find out if you’ve been victimized in several ways: for example, the DOL may contact you as they did my relative to tell you they stopped an attempted

fraudulent claim; you may receive a notice from the DOL or your employer regarding your “claim” (which you didn’t make) or, less frequently, you may see payments for benefits you never requested deposited in your account. If you are a victim of this scam, file a report with the NYS DOL at on.ny.gov/uifraud. Assume you are an identity theft victim and take measures to protect yourself from further identity theft. These can include placing a fraud alert or security freeze at each of the big three credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Experian, Equifax) which can make it difficult or impossible for a thief seeking to use your identity to open a new line of credit; regularly monitoring your credit reports (you’re entitled to a free one every four months thorough annualcreditreport.com); and changing logins, passwords and PINs for sensitive online and offline accounts. For more information on what to do to protect yourself from identity theft, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s helpful website at www.ftc.gov.

Dear Editor: This past year, more than ever, people have been ordering food for delivery and for pick up. Most of the drivers who do delivery get tips, and I’m sure that a good number of people put a tip on for those people making their food in restaurants, but I think many people forget tipping. One group that is truly forgotten is those who are making all of the drinks that are sent to people “to go.” Bartenders

Unemployment Insurance Fraud I was hoping not to write about scams for the second column in a row, but when a victimized relative came to me for advice last week I thought it might be helpful to revisit the area again. The flavor of the month (actually the past six or so months)? Unemployment insurance fraud. Unemployment insurance fraud can, like most frauds, take several forms (providing false information on an application, saying you’re not working when you are, working off the books while collecting benefits, etc.). Back in the summer, the NY Department of Labor (DOL) reported that it had identified and prevented more than 42,000 fraudulent unemployment benefit claims totaling over $1 billion since the pandemic began in March. Scammers, often unknown to the victims, are continuing to file fraudulent claims using New Yorkers’ identities to collect benefits in the names of individuals, like my relative, who are not unemployed. Milk Dud Mystery!

By Lou Pastina

In 1928, the Hoffman company of Chicago invented the Milk Dud. It’s called a dud because the chocolate covered caramel ball was supposed to be round, and the resulting misshaped candy was well….a dud! The candy was manufactured by a series of different companies over the years until Hershey finally bought it in 1996. I’m not sure how much milk is actually in a Milk Dud, but there definitely is caramel and chocolate. And, I don’t think Milk Duds are actually good for you. Which is why I love them! The mermaid is not happy about my Milk Dud jones, but hey, there could be worse things. But guess what? You can’t find them anywhere! And I would like to know who made

the decision not to stock Milk Duds. Does the mermaid have pull with the Hershey family? She herself is a big fan of the dark 85% cocoa chocolate, does she have an in with the company? Is there a conspiracy here bigger than anything going on in Washington D.C.? Let’s discuss further. The number one selling candy in America is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups by Hershey. By the way, also a personal favorite. Milk Duds are further down the list, but very popular, nonetheless. The packaging for Milk Duds is very distinctive coming in bright yellow boxes with big brown letters spelling out the product. So, they are hard to miss in a store. Recently, I noticed that they are nowhere to be found. I first noticed in the city when Gristedes stopped carrying them. Then when I was back full-time in Rockaway, I noticed that the 129th Street stores didn’t carry them. Neither do pharmacies. Even Stop & Shop is not carry-

ing them. I remember years ago when Coconut Chocolate Chip cookies disappeared mysteriously. This seems strangely similar. The absence of the cookies was explained by the coconut not being good for you, but we all know that isn’t true as coconut oil is now the rage. By the way, my favorite cookie never went on sale again, which is how I came to love Oreos, but that’s a different story. So, what’s going on? How do you get Milk Duds? Amazon? That seems extreme, and I think a sure sign that maybe I have a bigger problem than I am willing to admit. I mean, I would love to be able to get a medium sized box of those things and wash them down with a coke! I usually feel pretty charged up after one of those sessions, but then would slump in the corner about an hour later. A former article about the aforementioned Oreos resulted in neighbors leaving boxes of Oreos at my doorstep, but things have not gotten so desperate yet, and

I would rather save that cry for help when I can’t get Scotch. Could it be that the Hershey’s family has found some ingredient that is really, really bad for you and are slowly phasing them out? Or maybe the Governor has declared war on Milk Duds and has decided that in addition to closing restaurants that there are to be no Milk Duds sold due to the pandemic. Paranoid? Perhaps, but we are living in strange times. I would go out of state to get them, but I may be subject to all sorts of testing and quarantining when I try to return. So, I simply wait, watch and wonder when will my beloved Milk Duds return. Maybe like “New Coke,” a new formula is being tested? Or maybe the Hershey family has actually figured out how to make them perfectly round, and now have a major marketing headache on their hands. I mean, they wouldn’t actually be duds if they were perfectly round, right? The mystery continues…..

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Now that we are in the middle of flu season, I thought it would be a good time to discuss the flu. A few months ago, I discussed flu vaccines, so I won’t repeat myself on that subject. This year’s flu season is expected to be much less severe than normal due to all the precautions that we are taking because of the coronavirus. Remember that the seasonal flu usually causes between 25,000 and 50,000 deaths a year, and most of these deaths occur in people who are at high risk for complications from the flu. Those at high risk from the flu are also at high risk for complications from the coronavirus. Let’s look at who is at risk from these infections. Age groups – children younger than 5 year, especially those younger than 2 years and adults aged 65 years and older

The Rockaway Times

Don’t Forget The Flu Chronic medical conditions – asthma, neurologic and neurodevelopmental conditions, blood disorders (i.e., sickle cell disease), chronic lung disease (COPD, cystic fibrosis), diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disorders, obese persons with a BMI over 40, people with weakened immune systems (HIV or AIDS, cancers like leukemia) or medications or treatments (cancer chemotherapy or radiation, persons on chronic steroid treatment or other treatments that suppress the immune system), and people who have had a stroke. Other groups – pregnant women and women up to two weeks post-delivery, people who live in nursing homes or other care facilities. Racial and ethnic groups – people from certain racial and ethnic groups are at increased risk for hospitalization from the flu and include non-Hispanic Black persons, Hispanic

or Latino persons, American Indians, and native Alaskans. Fever in response to an infection occurs because it is the body’s natural defense system to fight infections. Chills, like vigorous exercise, cause muscles to rapidly contract, creating heat, thereby raising the body’s temperature. Heat kills the invading organism or virus. Once the body temperature reaches a certain point, sweating begins. Sweating cools the skin as the sweat evaporates, thereby lowering the body temperature. Cycles of chills and sweats are normal in infections, but do not always occur, especially in older individuals or those with compromised immune systems. If respiratory symptoms occur during flu season, even if fever is not present, the patient’s primary care provider should be contacted, especially if the patient is in a high-risk category. Antiviral medications can reduce flu symptoms, espe-

cially if they are begun withing two days of the onset of symptoms. These medications include Tamiflu (oseltamivir), Xofluza (baloxivir marboxil), Relenza (zanamivir), and Repivab (peramivir). If you haven’t already done so, get a flu vaccine now. Pregnant women should be vaccinated, regardless of their trimester. If you are in a high-risk category, especially if you got your vaccine last August or September, ask your doctor about getting a second dose because immunity from flu vaccination lasts only about 6 months. For more information, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has a helpful website. Be A Mirror Of Goodness “If you had a few days to live who would you contact and why aren’t you doing that now? Steven Levine. Wise words of wisdom to help guide us in living a purposeful and meaningful life. Appreciating the people in your life and letting them know you care about them. Being a positive influence in someone’s life, perhaps helping to lift someone’s spirit by a simple call, gift or visit. This past week I lost my beautiful, soulful, strong and resilient Uncle Willie at the young age of 97 years. He died from Covid-19. He was an immigrant

from Ireland who came over on a ship and settled in Maryland in the 1950s. He travelled with his wife and children to this country to have a better life and provide for his family. They missed Ireland terribly and would never forget where they came from. My parents also emigrated from Scotland and Ireland. They would settle in New York and make it a priority to visit my uncle and aunt at least once or twice a year. So, we would become very close to them and would do our best to stay in touch.

Willie was a blacksmith and would make a career working with the horses in the Park Police in Washington, DC. His proudest moment would be meeting the President of the United States in the White House. Ironically, he died on the tragic day at the Capital, January 6. It was his time to bid us farewell. He lived a life of service in our country and loved America for the opportunity to build a wonderful life with the freedom to work hard and get a fair wage. There are many people who have given a life of service in this country. I truly believe there is more good than bad in our world. We all belong here and want unity, peace and love. Respect and trust for one another is necessary to move forward in a positive way. Be a mirror of goodness for others. We were born to wake up to the light and yet people are being swallowed by darkness. Faith, Hope and Love are words to live by. It is how my Uncle Willie lived his long life. You cannot have hope without

Page 31 faith. When you have the first two, you will always have love in your life. Be kind and compassionate. Take care of those who are suffering. Remembering we are all good people. There are so many who have given their entire careers to service in this country. For this, I commend and thank you for being a beacon of peace and strength. May you continue to have integrity, wisdom and compassion for all beings. The following is poem is by Mary Oliver. Percy is her dog. “I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life “Love, love, love, says Percy. And hurry as fast as you can Along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust. Then, go to sleep. Give up your body heat, your beating heart. Then trust. “ I trust we will all be ok. I refuse to have a negative attitude and will continue to have FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE. May you be healthy, happy and free of suffering. May you learn to live with less resistance and be a helper.

Saying goodbye to someone you knew for 35 years is very hard! Manny was part of our family and always will be. He was always there to help. Always there to make you laugh. He was part of all of us. We love you very much and you will always be close in our hearts forever. We are all very sad but thinking about you will always make us smile.

Always In Our Hearts Forever! Your “Madelaine Family”

All we can say is, wow and bon appetit. We’re guessing Elliot Funtleyder was so full after chowing down it took him a year to email us these photos. The big meal and massive sundae were consumed in Fort Lauderdale in pre-pandemic times. He’s rocking a collectible, a vintage Rockaway Times t-shirt from the good old days.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? By John Howley

What happens after a demagogue is forced to accept the results of an election and leaves office? The return of the Marcos family to power in the Philippines offers some lessons. Ferdinand Marcos was a charismatic populist who held massive rallies and inspired intense personal loyalty from his followers. He used a mix of favors and coercion to keep legislators in line, and many of them had no problem staying in power by following his lead. He packed the courts and appointed a cabinet of billionaires and generals, but his closest advisors were always members of his family. When Marcos lost an election to Cory Aquino, he refused to concede. He claimed that he had actually won. He pressured election officials to declare him the winner. He pursued every legal contrivance to challenge the results. He called on his

supporters to defend the country from those who would steal the election. Marcos might have succeeded but for his loss of support from Republican allies in the United States. The Reagan Administration wanted a peaceful transition of power. Members of the Marcos government – including cabinet members – saw the writing on the wall and decided it was time to withdraw their support. The Marcos family retreated to Hawaii, but they did not simply retire under the palm trees. They and their allies back home plotted a return to power. The next President, Cory Aquino, faced dozens of violent coup attempts. No one was held accountable for participating in abuses of power during the Marcos administration. In a very short period of time, former members of the Marcos government were rehabilitated and elected or appointed to powerful positions.

Only six years after Marcos was forced out, his former Armed Forces Vice Chief of Staff was elected to succeed Aquino as President. Six years after that, a close Marcos family friend was elected President. The Marcos family has now returned to power as political kingmakers. Their millions of loyal supporters helped elect the current President, Rodrigo Duterte. He returned the favor – and enhanced his standing with the base – by letting them bury Ferdinand Marcos in the National Heroes Cemetery. Duterte has pursued authoritarian policies that fire up the base. He ordered the police to kill thousands of drug addicts in a supposed war on drugs. He attacked the press as an enemy of the state and arrested legitimate journalists on trumpedup charges. His supporters have drowned out the truth with massive social media campaigns spreading lies. Duterte’s supporters seem

not to notice or care that he has allowed China to take over Philippine territory. Many ordinary Filipinos just keep their heads down for fear of becoming a target. This is what happens when no one is held accountable for abuses of power. The perpetrators, enablers, and hangers-on come back even stronger than before. Here in the United States, the rehabilitation of our own demagogue’s enablers has already begun. Republican Senators who failed to provide any check or balance over the past four years are being applauded for doing nothing more than accepting the results of an election that 50 state officials from both parties and more than 50 state and federal courts confirmed weeks ago. An Attorney General and cabinet secretaries who resigned instead of standing up to proContinued on page 38

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Continued from Page 37 tect the Constitution are issuing written statements trying to distance themselves from the outgoing President. Republicans who tried to undermine the election results now want us to move on for the sake of national unity as if nothing happened. Our outgoing President and his family are going back to the palm trees of Mar-a-Lago. This may be a retreat, but it will not be

a retirement. Whether or not he runs again, we can expect him to hold frequent rallies spreading lies that will be amplified by the alternative fact media. How we respond will decide the fate of our democracy for years to come. One thing is for certain. Appeasement of those who engage in violence against our democracy is not an option. John Howley was born and raised in Rockaway. He is a lawyer and former Chairman of The Philippine American Chamber of Commerce.

The Rockaway Times

By Shane Kulman

Be A Comeback Queen Dear Enchantress, I’ve recently begun to be in your world, and I'd like to know if you've ever had a hard time or a challenge, or have a sickness that would keep you from working? Dear Curious Kate, I am grateful I have not had an illness that would require me to stop working or being of service. I do take many days off, if I am not well, or feel tired or low energy, I take time off to rest. Rest is just as important as the doings. When I return, I share what I learned, what I experienced,

it’s part of my healing to share and process in connection. If I had to take an extended time off, I would let people know. And no matter what, would use it to write, record my voice or create. It could be either full writings, or to jot down ideas. I would continue to learn and process no matter what. The tools I teach are the tools I use, so I would continue using the tools and practicing the processes. Humans are forgiving. If I ever had to take a leave for any reason, as long as I shared why I was taking time off, by choice or if I had to, I always bring my transparen-

cy to the table. That’s a relief and makes it easier to return. I know I could begin again, no matter what. I have that intrinsic tenacity. I believe everyone can tap into that. Since I work with perfectionists and procrastinators, they often go into “hiding,” so I’m an expert at supporting the comeback Queen. I am a holistic business owner. My life is not separate from my business. There would many lessons that clients would resonate with from me taking the time off. I would bring my truth and my heart after being away, and it would be a great example

of going from rupture to rapture, and that is leadership. The comeback Queen is brilliant, genius, and absolutely honorable. My big point of view is, life is the best teacher and teaching from that place is the best way to further the healing, to teach others what I have experienced. So my advice to anyone that went through some transition time away; COME BACK! The Universe is awaiting you to share your genius!
