Little Libraries: A Novel Idea writer who encouraged peninsula residents to build back their community after Sandy struck. The second is the bright red and blue Children’s Rock-A-Book branch, which was donated to Rockaway by the Gift Fund of the Little Free Library. The little libraries, located on Beach 134th Street near Rockaway Beach Boulevard, see a lot of traffic, particularly by neighborhood children and the local schools, Macron said. Macron, a lawyer, said she initially stocked the libraries with secondhand books she bought in bulk from Amazon, for example. She and her daughter, Juliette, use the libraries to share their favorite books with the community – Juliette’s favorite book is George Orwell’s 1984. They started the children’s library with popular favorites such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harriet the Spy and a Series of Unfortunate Events. Many books are “checked out” and later returned. Some books don’t come back at all, but are replaced with others authors. Many local residents donate their own

books to keep the libraries going. Macron even stamps her books with special rubber stamps as an unofficial way to keep track of them. “No matter where it goes, any place in the whole world, if I come across it again, I’ll know it’s mine,” she said. Macron, a self-described “luddite,” said she wants to keep book spines – as opposed to electronic reading devices like Kindles – alive. “How else will you have that experience when you’re riding the train and you look up suddenly and re-

alize that someone else is reading the same book?” she said. She said she hopes others in the community will start their own libraries. There are little free libraries located throughout New York City, but no others in Rockaway. Her number one goal is to promote reading. “It opens realms and trains of thought that might not otherwise be available,” she said. “Reading offers an escape and it excites the brain.”

By Bianca Fortis Anyone who doesn’t like to read just hasn’t found the right book, according to Rockaway resident Marilyn Macron. That’s why she installed two “Little Free Libraries” in Rockaway: to encourage literacy in the community. Macron said she first heard of Little Free Library through Facebook; these tiny libraries, which look like large birdhouses, are located throughout the world and operate under a “take a book, return a book” policy. The books are free and no library card is required. Macron, a bibliophile, thought the libraries would be a great way to supplement Rockaway’s own public libraries, which have suffered since Hurricane Sandy. Library stewards can choose to either build or purchase a library from Little Free Library – prices range from $192.99 for “The Essential” library to $999.95 for the “Neighborhood Building Party Kid.” The first one Macron installed is the driftwood color-stained Patti Smith Library, which was named after the iconic poet, musician and

EDC, Parks Present New Boardwalk Features By Bianca Fortis The New York City Parks Department and the city’s Economic Development Corporation appear to have heard the concerns of Rockaway residents. Emil Martone, a representative of the EDC, unveiled new plans for additions for the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk at at the Community Board 14 meeting, held Tuesday night at the Knights of Columbus. It was the first board meeting following the summer break. Martone said the new designs are still in the “concept” phase, although they have already been shown to the city’s Public Design Commission. Twice over the summer, the agencies presented to community board members plans for the boardwalk that included chaise lounges and “tanning tables.” The chaise lounges were designed as a way to differentiate seating at the main entrances from seating along the rest of the boardwalk, at the request of the city’s PDC. The tanning tables, sloped, flat surfaces, were suggested as a way to use some of the space between the boardwalk and the ramps leading up to the boardwalk. In August, members of CB14’s Parks Committee were outspoken against the designs, saying that they could welcome vandalism and that the city agencies had not listened to the re-

quests of the community. In the new designs, the chaise lounges were replaced with porch seating. “Chaise lounges – we are soon to never use that word again,” Martone said as he presented the designs. Similar seating is used in other parks in the city. They will be made of recycled lumber and will be located at seven spots along the boardwalk. Most will be three feet wide, but those that are six feet wide will have an aluminum rail down the center, preventing anyone from lying across them horizontally. The tanning tables were replaced with a “simpler planting element,” small plots of flowers and plants located in 13 areas along the boardwalk. Finally, the bike lanes on the boardwalk are to be marked with thermoplastic inlays, which last between two to four years, according to Martone. Some board members said they would have prefered a more permanent solution, but they did not push back against the design. The board voted in favor of all three designs.

ASPCA, NYPD Host Pet Wellness Clinic On Sunday, Sept. 14, the ASPCA will partner with the New York City Police Department to host a Community Pet Party wellness clinic for residents living in the 100th and 101st Precincts in Far Rockaway, Queens. Free services for residents and their pets include vaccinations and microchips for cats and dogs and free ID tags as well as giveaways of blankets and Halo pet food, while supplies last.

As September marks Disaster Preparedness Month and hurricane season reaches its height, the ASPCA will also be distributing important information about how residents can include their pet in their emergency preparedness plan. The event takes place from 12 to 4 p.m. and will be held at Conch Playground at Beach 49th Street.

Sand Replenishment Continues: Parks Department Crews have resumed pumping sand onto the beaches of Rockaway as part of the Corps of Engineers’ effort to repair and restore the engineered beach there to provide coastal storm risk management benefits to the community. Work was temporarily stopped this summer when, as expected, crews moving east reached nesting areas of the endangered piping plover around Beach 61st Street. The plovers have fledged and the no-construction environmental window ended at the beginning of September so crews have now resumed sand pumping operations. Sand pumping will begin in the

area of Beach 61st Street and continue east to the eastern end of the project area at Beach 19th Street. Sand has already been placed from Beach 149th to Beach 61st. Sand placement work is expected to be completed by the end of October. There will be rolling beach closures of roughly 1000 foot wide sections of the beach that will be fenced off where construction work is active, but the Corps of Engineers will make efforts to limit the impacts of the ongoing work on recreation without compromising public safety. Closures will be closely coordinated with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.

No News Is Good News and killed by a police officer but I was so out of it I only heard snippets of the headlines. I thought it was about someone named Ferguson. I heard something about the Gaza strip and then someone joked about the Gaza strip club and I was wondering if there was such a thing, but was too afraid ask anyone lest I seem that ignorant. But for a second I thought it might be some new hipster club opening somewhere in Rockaway. I feel like a kid who didn’t do his summer reading. Isis, war in the Ukraine, Iraq falling apart. All this stuff to catch up on. But then… When I heard Al Sharpton was back in the news, I figured, hey, it’s not so bad being ignorant. Boyleing Over: Last week’s column in which I typed while wearing a yarmulke and eating Levy’s rye bread triggered some good comments. The reviews in general: pretty good for a goyim. Of course, a few terms slipped by me. Somebody said, with all the gossiping that goes around here, how could you forget yenta? Almost the opposite of yenta is balabusta. But I don’t know….I look at that word and I wonder how an Italian immigrant might say it. **The temperatures dropped for a few days and it didn’t take long for Rockaway winter wear to make the scene. A little chill in the air and all of a sudden you saw guys in heavy jackets and short pants. You’ll see the same in February.

The RT Bike

The new Rockaway Times logo includes a bicycle and what better way to tell the world than to put a bike on the roof of the RT booth? We sure have gotten some comments. “What, no longer a car service?” “You give bike rides? “Good place to work out during lunch hour.” And “ET Phone Home.”

00167RT

Every now and then you run into someone who is completely ignorant of the news. You might be ignorant of their ignorance until they ask something like, there’s a ferry? Where? You pause, like, dude, really? You sometimes mention things that you figure have gotten around. In just a conversational kind of way you might bring up the boardwalk, the boogie board ban, speed cameras, or the arrival of a new homeless shelter, and you get a blank face in return. Huh? is the only response you get. Assume nothing. There is not a single issue that is germane to Rockaway that everybody knows about. It shouldn’t be shocking. I know Boyleing Points readers know who the vice president is, but if Rockaway is anything like the rest of the country, 29 percent of your neighbors don’t. Hmmm, makes me wonder what percent knows Phil Goldfeder…. And a quarter of the people you bump into don’t know the earth revolves around the sun. Oddly enough, since taking on this Rockaway Times thing I’ve become more understanding of the woefully ignorant. Turns out, I don’t have a clue. At least not as summer winds down. We live here because of the summer months. Don’t be ruining barbecues and the beach with issues. Especially ones that are off the peninsula. Not to make light about what happened in Ferguson, Missouri when a man named Michael Brown was shot

DOT Uses FEMA Money to Mill and Repave Sandy Struck Streets was to have been done on other side streets including East 7th, 8th and 9th Roads; and Walton, Church, West, Lanark, and Noel Roads on the east side of town. It is anticipated that paving on the milled streets will begin next week. Completion of paving will probably take up to two weeks. Residents should be alert to no-parking notices posted by the DOT. Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathon Gaska said that 60 to 70 streets in Rockaway will eventually be milled and repaved, many of them streets that might not normally be done under usual city capital projects. Gaska also commented that the district office does not receive notice of specific work schedules until the Friday before work begins. Residents should be on the lookout for posted no-parking signs a day or two before street work is to be done. Many Broad Channel residents are concerned that some side streets in town are not included in the milling and repaving project. East 6th Road is especially in need of repair that includes grading and storm sewer improvement. Rain water and normal high tide water collects in dips, potholes and near storm drains. This has been a problem for decades. “The Civic Association protested that it was outrageous to come in and pave and to not include all of the blocks,” wrote Broad Channel Civic Association President Dan Mundy, Jr.

in a Facebook newsletter this week. He and other members of the civic association met with representatives of DOT and the Department of Design and Construction last Friday. The contractor doing the work was also at the meeting. Mundy explained that the funding for all street milling and repaving in Rockaway and Broad Channel has been allotted by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to repair damage done by Superstorm Sandy in October of 2012. “This is separate money from the billions given to the city for Build It Back,” said Mundy. “FEMA has made the determination” regarding which streets to include, he added, calling the determination arbitrary. Attending Friday’s meeting in Broad Channel were Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and a representative

from Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office. According to Mundy, both representatives are in communication with DDC and DOT to convince them to use alternative funding sources to ensure that all streets in the town are repaved. Residents should contact the offices of Goldfeder and Ulrich to express concern about streets not included in the present work schedule, especially East 6th Road. Milling of the following streets in Rockaway is scheduled to begin today, Thursday, September 11: Beach 143rd and 144th Streets from Neponsit to Newport Avenues Beach 141st Street from Beach Channel Drive to Newport Avenue Beach 140th Street from Cronston Avenue to Beach Channel Drive Beach 139th Street from Beach Channel Drive to Rockaway Beach Boulevard Beach 134th Street from Newport Avenue to Cronston Avenue

By Kathy Louis Monday, September 8, marked the third day of the new school year for students of PS 47 in Broad Channel. It also marked the first day of an extensive Department of Transportation milling and repaving project of many streets in Broad Channel and Rockaway that had been damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Parents and children carefully navigated Power Road and 9th and 10th Roads near the school as heavy equipment worked on the streets. There was no parking allowed on the side streets under construction. Cross Bay Boulevard was lined with huge dump trucks and parked cars on the median while traffic, including school buses, slowed to a crawl in one lane. Broad Channel crossing guard, Helen Henglein noted that all was going very smoothly. “The contractor spoke with me last Thursday,” she said. “He wanted to know what the school schedule was so he could work around it.” Helen also commented that her duties were much easier than in the spring when milling and repaving was done on the boulevard. Streets in Broad Channel being milled Monday were Demerest Road, East 20th Road, part of Channel Road, West 10th Road to Shad Creek, Power Road, West 9th Road to Shad Creek, West 8th Road to Shad Creek and Shad Creek from Cross Bay to West 9th Road. Tuesday and Wednesday work

If you’re reading this on Thursday, September 11th please note there is a memorial ceremony at Tribute Park located at Beach 116th and the bay beginning at 6:30 p.m. *** Last week we ran our first Rockaway Word Search and we’re almost going broke with all the t-shirts we’re mailing out (we were going to offer one t-shirt to a randomly drawn winner but that felt cheap so a few dozen are going out. Keep your shirt on as we have to order some new ones). Annie Feliciano gets special mention for being first. The trick was to find the missing word and plenty of people did just that. It seems the only one who didn’t find the missing word “Phil Goldfeder” was Phil Goldfeder himself. This week those who find the missing word are eligible to win a $25 gift certificate to a local establishment. We’ll pick a name out of a Rockaway Times hat. The consolation prize is a mention in the following week’s RT. ***

Imagine if there were a boardwalk. Imagine if there were a ferry service. The NYC Parks Department announced that 25 percent more people visited Rockaway beaches this summer than last. The total number of visitors was more than 4 million. *** The Rockaway Youth Task Force is encouraging people to become members of the RYTF Community Garden at 319 Beach 57th Street. The Farmers Market is open every Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Available fresh produce make this an urban oasis. Hats off to the young people making this happen. *** Some people think Labor Day is like a light switch. They pick up the towels and beach chairs and don’t see the ocean again until Memorial Day. But more and more people are starting to realize September might be the best month of all to enjoy the beach. One way to extend the fun is to stop by the Honeyfest at the

Paul’s Bicycle Paul’Shop s Bicycle Shop

Beach 97th concession. Besides varieties of honey and bee products the Fest offers art, music, kid’s stuff, food and fun. 11 a.m. to sunset. *** So the timing is shaping up like this. The Mayor marks the second anniversary of Sandy on October 29th with statements about how far people have come, and there’s still a long way to go. Two days later he kills the ferry service. Or extends it. *** Cora Nelsen is on a mission to beat tickets from the speed camera on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 106th. We call it 106th because there is no street sign between Beach 108th and Beach 104th and the camera sits in between those two intersections. Her ticket (and probably yours) says the violation occurred at Beach 104th. That’s clearly not the case. We like her argument. If the cops say you held up a bank they better know which bank and where it was. If a speed camera says you were speeding it should correctly state the location, right? Well, not according to the judge or arbitrator on her case who found her argument “unpersuasive.” *** Don’t get your nose out of joint: we report; your nose decides. Based mostly on complaints to 311, a website, Brickunderground. com, listed the “smelliest neighborhoods” in Queens. According to the

Page 7 site, Neponsit is the third smelliest neighborhood, only less rank than Malba (near Whitestone) and Lindenwood. Hmmm, maybe it’s the perfume some wear. Anyway, residents of Bayswater and Broad Channel shouldn’t stick their nose up in the air over the news, those places made the top 10 as well. Rockaway Park and Rockaway Beach, both of which get ripe fragrances from the sewer treatment plant, did not get make the list. The only real conclusion from this foul smelling news is that people near the plant need to call 311 more often. *** There’s more than Facebook out there. Besides RockawayTimes.com (our free, often updated website) there are a few Rockaway themed websites worth a stop. Check out RockawaySummer.com, Rockawayist.com, and see what Katie Honan is reporting at DNAinfo.com. *** Shane Shackleford is biking cross country in support of streetsoccerusa.org and will be sending occasional dispatches from the road. He’s traveling lightly but did pack a Rockaway Times t-shirt. A quick update is in this week’s paper. *** Our condolences to the Schwach family. Down On Dayton

Dear Editor: At one time Dayton was a place people would wait years on lists to get into. Apartments never laid empty for more than a few weeks. Now there is a numerous amount of apartments laying empty. Rules change daily, shareholders opinions don’t matter. We are locked out of board meetings and quite frankly there is a total lack of regard for what shareholders want or need. Lucie Limogelli

Wise Young Man

Dear Editor: (Regarding Alex Karinsky’s Tubular Views: the absurdity of the Parks Department generalization and definition of a “flotation device” is not lost, even on a 9 year old. My son, Parker, said to me the other week, “Dad, they can’t say a boogie board is a flotation device.” “How come?” “Because it says right there on the warning label that “This is not a flotation device.” Out of the mouths of babies (no insult to a young man of 9)…Mr. Karinsky, although I enjoy your articles and so far have agreed with you on every point, I think you could have saved some ink by posting just your last few sentences. The logic of your son leaves me rolling. Let’s have him in a debate with Commissioner Silver! We can’t lose! Shaun Reen

Kosher Kudos

Dear Editor: Loved your Boyleing Points column last week. True, you are a mensch but sometimes a nudnik as well. Your Yiddish was perfect to my Jewish eyes and I got quite a laugh out of the column. The putzes, yutzes and klutzes are all around us here in Rockaway, especially some of our elected officials when they don’t listen to our concerns, which is usually all the time. And while I’m at it, the yutzes that are working on The Boulevard should get finished already so you don’t feel like you’re on a roller coaster every time you drive down the street. Kosher, or Jewish food, abounds here in Rockaway. Don’t forget on that bagel you want a “shmeer” of cream cheese with lox along with a Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray tonic. And, that pastrami sandwich always went great with a 2 cents plain with a “spritz” of cherry syrup. Unfortunately, you can no longer get that in

The Rockaway Times

Rockaway as we don’t have a good old-fashioned kosher deli. So as we always say, “zul zein mit glick”, go with good health and have a Happy and Healthy New Year even if you’re not Jewish, Kevin. Sharon Gabriel

The RT Shines

Dear Editor: Kevin me Boyo, the RT, the Rockaway Times, was a gem this week. The cover photo (A Boy and His Whale) had me wowing in wonder. The article on Emily, the girl with down syndrome, had the tears pouring out of me. Then Boyleing Points (Partly Kosher) had me laughing like crazy through the tears. It was funny and warm hearted. Finally, I was back into tears but inspired by the article on the young girl and the wheelchair. The Sensei went to teach blubbering all over himself. Finally pulled myself together right before I entered the YMCA. Never have been moved as much or laughed as loud by a newspaper ever! Wonderful work. Yes I’m serious. Pulitzer prize. Your love shines out. Thank you brother K. David Roya

Math Reveals Truth

Dear Editor: Mayor De blasio triumphantly announces 543 checks totaling $9 million was sent to Build it Back applicants. Disbelieving the answer ,I got utilizing my long division skills learned from Sister Imelda at St. Vinny’s, I had to use my iphone calculator. That’s an average check of $16,575. Can you even get siding on your house for that? Paul Richter

Road Blues

Dear Editor: Rockaway has its own rollercoaster; it’s called the roads! HELP!!! Will someone please get me a Magic Carpet! Never in my 45years in Rockaway, have I seen the roads so bad. I am so tired of driving around manhole covers, that are far above the road and potholes that are far below. To the Department of Transportation: I know that Sandy ruined a lot of roads, but come on, guys, it’s been two years! A short trip up or down the peninsula, that formerly would take

10 minutes, now takes forever. Roads are being done two or three times and with not much improvement. It’s one thing after another. You will be stopped with STOP signs or SLOW signs; double lanes are turned into single lanes with cones. Personally, I have had to get my tires patched, due to nails on the roads. The roads in other areas are paved level, why cant our roads be paved like that? Without a Boardwalk, the roads have become even more important to the residents of Rockaway. Also, more and more bikers are riding with the traffic. For now: my advice is leave 10 minutes early, take a deep breath, and be patient, and above all, keep your eyes on the road. Bill Dickesheid

Amazing Stories

Dear Editor: How about an “Amazing Rockaway Stories” section? I remember how we would hear these stories late at night because, we always ate dinner at 10 p.m. after my parents got off of work. All the lights would be out in the house except for the kitchen (giving it an extra spooky effect). My father had told us about a patient that came into his office for a visit with a heavy German accent. The man (former German U-boat

navy) said that late one night during WW2 they were off of “Rockaway Beach” and the captain surfaced the U-boat. He gave the crew a chance to look at the lights of Manhattan shining brightly in the distance. The man said that they were only there for a few minutes and everybody got a quick look at Manhattan. He said that everybody on the U-boat just wanted to get the HELL outta there and fast ! Not many liked the captain’s idea of sight seeing ! Matt Whalen

Rockaway Rockin’ On

Dear Editor: Thank you Katie McFadden and The Rockaway Times! The Hell or High Water Band greatly appreciates this thoroughly enjoyable article (Music Scene Flourishes, RT, 9/4) and the detail on the breadth of great bands and venues. The live music scene in The Rockaways just keeps getting better. We’ve been privileged to play around the peninsula for many, many years and the current scene is just awesome. Thanks to all the venues who support live music and let us do “that voodoo that we do”! Keep rockin’ The Rockaways. The Hell or High Water Band

Remembering This is a thank you they’d rather not receive. But we must tip our cap to those who organize tributes and events for those killed on 9/11. While “moving on” seems to be wired into our DNA, it’s a good thing that for some, “never forget” is more than a bumper sticker. September 11th is a sad, somber day for many yet, tributes and charities established because of that horrific day in 2001, are healthy reminders to honor life and embrace the notion of community.

Grieving, mourning, and remembering are essentially personal, varying from one person to the next. But we need communities, we draw on the good and strengths of each other. Tributes and special events to mark this day speak to our humanity, how we’re all in this together. Death, of course, is something we all share. The tragic untimely death of thousands, senseless as it was, should remind us to live honorably and fully. We thank those who help us remember.

n Keep your Bag ready and available. n Remember to take it (or parts of it) along if you should be traveling

or staying outside the home. Consider storage outside the house, in a storage shed for instance. That way you would still have your kit and documents in the event of a house fire. n Use Zip lock bags to keep paperwork and other items dry. n Check the items in your bag periodically for expiration or recalls. n Multiple websites conveniently sell Preparedness Go Bags. Be certain to include your personal additions to those bags. Thanks for reading this information. Please share it and encourage others to make this first step in preparedness. By Patti Gillespie One of the last things we want to think about is the possibility of another natural or man-made disaster. While we all hope and pray that is not a reality any time soon for the residents of the Rockaways, we would like to encourage everyone to have an emergency plan and to share it with your family. One of the first steps can be putting together a Disaster “Go Bag”. As part of our 10 week training for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), myself and other team members were tasked with putting together a “Go Bag.” We then shared our personal bags in a Show and Tell session, and I can tell you that the contents had some variety, depending on particular needs and preferences. However, the core contents of the “Go Bag” remained constant. This assembled kit is intended to sustain you for 72 hours following an evacuation. The Go Bag can also help to sustain you during a “Shelter in Place” scenario. We encourage you to put your plan together as soon as possible. Encourage your family and neighbors to do the same. We intend to share some additional information in the weeks to come. Let’s begin our preparedness

many of us want to learn more. One of the greatest pleasures I have now experienced was being able to chat casually with Simon for well over an hour. Swap stories, have some beers, talk about the suckiness of getting old and how to stay amped when things get harder physically. Throughout the chat, hitting on topics on how Simon has stayed relevant as a constant innovator of surfboard design and the mere fact of how he changed surfing forever, I was blown away by his humbleness. No, I was actually floored by it! I had heard rumors of

a fish and can be measured and weighed. Some surfers, I guess, will forever talk themselves up in a “Dunning-Kruger” way and it is sad. I just hope they see the video. I’ve learnt so many of life’s lessons through the experience of the ocean, wave riding, surf contests and how humbling it is. One of the things I love about being a parent to two surfing groms, is teaching them these things, along with new measures, such as the inspiration of Simon’s humbleness. And I hope as they get older, they can be role models and an inspiration better than I could ever be. Thanks to Brandon D’Leo for making this event happen and the lessons learned.

As these recent new winds spell the real change of season, it was so refreshing to have a deep cultural change blow through Rockaway last Sunday, with the likes of Simon Anderson and crew setting up at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. While their verbal presentations and display of boards were relatively eye-popping, it was the tribal element of surfing that really came to the fore. Here we were as brothers and sisters of the ocean, equals in most respects, but clearly there was a knowledge base that these gents brought, that made

it, but to be in that presence it was like an avalanche hit me. Which got me thinking about my own humbleness – shit, I think I am humble, I hope people think I am, but what a lesson I got. Which then got me thinking, once again, about this very curious syndrome called the DunningKruger effect. Essentially it is a syndrome where an individual thinks that they are better than what they really are. Or as Wikipedia puts it, “a cognitive bias manifesting in unskilled individuals suffering from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude.” This very syndrome is rampant in the surfing waters all over the world, yet seemingly even more potent in these local waters. No idea why, maybe it’s all the late bloomers trying to make themselves relevant. You’ll overhear the stories at your local pub, in many of our fine restaurants, in transit on the train or bus and obviously in the water. Talking story is fun, but embellishing it to the point that you’re claiming to be better than what you are, is pretty sad. Fortunately or unfortunately, surfing is a very subjective sport. It’s unlike fishing, which have their own embellished stories, a fish is

By Shane Shackleford Just checked into the Comfort Inn in Crewe VA after 8 days of craziness. While filling out paperwork at the front desk I came across make and model. Now usually this means what type of car. It had finally hit me that I was bicycling across America. NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC, VA equaling 490 miles. Four flat tires, one rear rack malfunction, two tune ups, one wild dog chase, and 32,000 calories of food intake later, I haven’t even scratched the surface of my goal to reach California. Next stop is Charlotte, NC where Street Soccer USA was originated. Working with the homeless and low income, Street Soccer is

teaming up with the Urban Ministry Center to throw its annual art show fundraiser. A day of art, soccer, and genuinely good people is why I ride my bicycle from state to state. To find out more go streetsoccerusa.org or urbanministycenter.org. In closing, when reality sets in about a challenge, you can either look at it from a hallways perspective, with the attainable thing in the distance, or you can discover the many doors along the way. The doors being equally as rewarding and astonishingly distracting when the bigger picture seems too overwhelmingly distant. This is for those who still believe in being the best they can be everyday.

Beach 116th Street Gets Clean-up Help By Bianca Fortis Supplemental street cleaning and trash pick-up along the Beach 116th business corridor will be funded for the sixth straight year by the Doe Fund, Councilman Eric Ulrich announced last week. “Beach 116th Street has never looked better,” Ulrich said in front of Paninico Café on Thursday, Sept. 4. “And I expect that even better things are still to come.” The Doe Fund provides programs to help formerly incarcerated and homeless individuals transition back into independent, productive lives. The street cleaning services are performed by some of these individuals – the “men in blue” – on Mondays and Fridays. Krzysztof Sadlej, the executive director of the Beach 116th Street Partnership said the business corridor has come a long way since Hurricane Sandy struck. He said

there are new businesses opening. He also pointed to the mural that was recently painted along Beach Channel Drive, the new planters that have been installed and said that new street furniture that is due to arrive soon. “Fortunately this summer we had a lot of visitors – and a lot of trash on the ground,” he said. “Litter maintenance has certainly been a challenge for us on the street. I think this supplemental maintenance is going to go a long way. George McDonald, the founder and president of the Doe Fund, said the organization was proud to renew its commitment to the community. “The “men in blue” who will service this beautiful district are taking the first steps towards restoring their lives and reclaiming their place in society,” he said. “We’re so grateful that, thanks to Mr. Ulrich, they get to do it here.”

Canine Corner By Lisa Long Thinking about getting a dog? Do your research before bringing any new pet into your life. Without taking this step, you stand a very good chance of having difficulties with managing your dog. Every breed of dog was created with a specific working or helping purpose in mind. Historically, only a few breeds were actually intended strictly as companions to their human owners. People in today’s society seldom obtain a specific breed because they need the dog to perform the function for which it was bred. In fact, many people become exceedingly frustrated when their dog uses these natural instincts. Herding dogs, such as Corgis and Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, cattle and other livestock. But when they perform their job by rounding up the kids playing in the yard by nipping at their heels, Mom usually gets perturbed. Terriers, such as the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier, were bred to ferret out vermin. But when they start digging in the garden for grubs, Grandma gets upset. Scent hounds, such as beagles were bred to follow a scent despite any and all distractions. But when they don’t come when called because they smell a squirrel, one might think the dog doesn’t love you enough to come. Some dogs were specifically bred to alert by barking, for example, the Tibetan Spaniel. But when they bark because the mail carrier has dared to appear on the street, the neighbors get frustrated. Labrador Retrievers were used to run through the coldest waters and through the harshest brambles for long periods of time on a hunt. The originators of this breed reduced the dog’s ability to feel pain. When Mom and Dad excit-

edly bring home this “good family dog,” they think he’s great for letting the 2-year-old fall on top of him when running through the living room. But when he rips up the carpet or develops obsessive behavior because he isn’t getting the amount of exercise necessary for a dog with his energy level, Mom and Dad decide Rover doesn’t fit into the family so well after all. The key to being happy with the behavior of you purebred dog is to find appropriate outlets for your dog’s natural, ingrained instincts. Creating ways to harness this breed specific behavior in a training scenario will make working with and living with your dog much easier. You may not be able to give your Border Collie a flock of sheep to herd outside your condo, but you can teach him to play Frisbee. The bottom line is that it’s better to find ways to allow you dog to appropriately exhibit its genetic breed characteristics than to try to stop the behavior altogether. After all, many of these dogs have been using these behaviors for hundreds and even thousands of years. Encourage your dog’s breed behavior. Find activities that will allow her to fulfill her purpose in life. Teach your retriever to fetch in the swimming pool. Teach your hunting dog to find his dinner scattered in hiding places all around the house. Teach your Terrier to dig in a sandbox provided for that purpose. Teach your herding dog to round up the kids (without nipping at their heels) and bringing them up to bed at night. Just think about what the investment in training your dog will save you in the long term.....you will definitely gain a canine companion that will truly be a responsible member of your family! healthy Kindness You might say to yourself after reading the column heading “Kindness”, what does that have to do with being well and happy? If I’m being kind, what has that have to do with MY well being? First off, what we think, say and do becomes a part of us – in a big way. What we think, say and do in relation to ourselves and others becomes a part of our inner selves: the Source of our being. “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” (Lao Tzu, philosopher and prophet of ancient China)

We can have control over how we think, what we say and how we act. We can think, speak and act negatively/meanly or we can think, speak and act positively/kindly. The choice is yours. “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” (Lao Tzu) The first kindness is to oneself. Why are we sometimes so hard on ourselves? There really is no reason for it. Approach your thoughts and feelings with a softness, a kindness, and you will begin to feel less agitated and be more at ease. The second kindness is to all living beings. Once there is that feeling of ease within

you, there is no other way than to be kind, not only doing “acts of kindness” but being kind. Passing someone on your way out of a store as they’re coming in: smile as you hold the door and acknowledge that there is another being crossing your path! The inner feelings of kindness that radiate outward create a harmony around each of us. Think of it as an energy field. Imagine there is energy coming forth from your smile which creates a sort of sphere of good, kind energy. Imagine all of the spheres crossing paths with all of the smiles and kindness! Remember, though, that ease has to come from within. And we must stop and renew, restore and rejuvenate. There is no time? It’s all how we look at it. We seem to accomplish what we deem important on a daily basis, so if we deem important to refresh every day so that we can feel peace, then, we will radiate kindness. You can be certain that everyone will benefit. Center in, think positive, kind thoughts. Say positive, kind words. Hope to see some more smiling faces around……

Facts You Probably Don’t Need The saying goes: “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts.” Except here: A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. (Okay, we love silly facts as much as anyone but let’s hear how they tested this one. Come to think of it, three seconds is about as long as they live when you take them home from a pet store.)

You cannot tickle yourself. You can, but you won’t laugh or giggle. The giant squid has the largest eyes in the world. The average person falls asleep in seven minutes. (Faster if you attend certain meetings in Rockaway.) There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.

Home Sharing Service Airbnb Thrives in Rockaway

!

Open Now

It’s no secret that Rockaway has a lot to offer as a tourist destination. But where to stay has long been a challenge. Now some locals are offering options thanks to Airbnb.com, a website offering unique overnight stays for travelers. And the options are varied, from single rooms to entire homes. In Rockaway, beachside condos, cozy bungalows and even houseboats are among the many and varied types of homes that can be rented. Marek Tobiasz, who has listed his Beach 97th Street home on the website since May, said the service is a great way to meet people – he has guests from around the world booking his apartment. He provides wine as well as complimentary coffee and drinks for guests upon their arrival. Tobiasz proudly pointed out that all of his reviews have been 5 stars. “We’re putting a piece of our heart in this,” he said. “We like to make people feel good.” He said his guests range from families on vacation to writers who just need to get away for a bit to focus on their work. He said even for individuals who plan to spend time in Manhattan, it’s worth sacrificing the 50 minutes for the trip there to have access to an entire apartment as well as a backyard. “In Manhattan for $250 a night, what do you have?” he said. “A bed and a TV.” For Margaret, who declined to give her last name, and her boyfriend, Airbnb got them out of a bind. The couple have been listing their home, near Beach 90th Street, for a couple of months. They moved to Rockaway from Bushwick, Brooklyn in January. A few months ago, their roommate moved to California, leaving them

trying to figure out how to rent the second bedroom. They decided to try Airbnb. “It was a lot better doing that than finding someone random on Craigslist and not getting along with them and having them be on the lease,” she said. “This way, if we don’t get along with someone – which hasn’t been the case – they’re gone in a few days.” Many of her guests just want to visit the beach or be close to Kennedy Airport. For short-term stays, the couple does not provide access to the kitchen, but they do make breakfast for their guests each morning. Longer-term guests Margaret said she’s hosted include a doctor doing a residency at a local hospital who used the apartment as a crash pad while he found a permanent apartment, and an artist doing a sculpture residency. Except for the month of October, they’re booked through December. “I think if we wanted to have people here every day we could,” she said. One caveat to using the service is that hosts are responsible for following all local laws regarding housing, which can sometimes be restrictive. For example in New York City, it is unlawful to rent out many rooms or homes for less than 30 days unless the space is occupied by someone else full time. The law is in place to prevent “transient hotels.” Margaret acknowledged that the legal issues involved are sometimes a turn-off to others interested in using Airbnb. But, she said, if the user knows the rules, then they’re fine. “I find it surprisingly easy,” she said. “It’s a lot simpler than I thought it would be.”

Dunes Alone Spell Doom

Say you saw it in the Rockaway Times!

So the third anniversary of Hurricane Irene came and went with barely a mention of the worst storm to hit the Rockaway seashore prior to Hurricane Sandy. If Sandy never occurred, the second anniversary of Irene would have been front page news, peninsula and citywide. It amazes me how soon we forget, how quickly we let our guard down and how we allow ourselves to be sold such a “bill of goods” all in the name of protecting our peninsula from the next Irene or Sandy. If you go down to the beach you will find a five foot hill of sand that the City of New York calls a “dune.” I call it a joke. In December 2012, Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, thenMayor Bloomberg set out to come up with ideas that would make New York City more sustainable and resilient to future storms and climate change. He commissioned a program to contribute to the PlaNYC for 2013, which was released in spring of that year. This was called the NYC Special initiative on Rebuilding and Resiliency (SIRR). After months of studies and interviews with people on our peninsu-

la, SIRR came up with recommendations to protect the Rockaway peninsula from sea level rise and future storms. The strongest recommendation was dunes! Yes, my friends, dunes. Hard to believe? The SIRR Report actually used some before and after photos of some beach grass on Beach 56th. The photos can be found on page 43 of NYC’s PlaNYC 2013. An acre of beach grass is not a dune and a five foot hill of sand is not a dune, even though the City of NY wants you to believe it is! The great question that I’ve been asking myself lately is, how have the people of the Rockaway peninsula, and the great NYC urban planners been sold such a “bill of goods” about how well dunes fared on the peninsula. Especially when the only real dunes found on the Rockaway peninsula were found in Fort Tilden, in Breezy Point and of course the famous dunes on the beach around beach 140-141 streets. We all know how everything behind those dunes fared during Superstorm Sandy. If not, take a look at the empty lots by the beach in the 140’s – in other words, NOT VERY WELL! Now, I am in no way anti-dune. I just saw with my own eyes what worked and what did not work to protect our peninsula during Superstorm Sandy. What worked was large beaches, held in place by large stone groins, where waves broke 200 feet from homes on Beach 25th to Beach 86th Street. During the studies by the SIRR committee, Walter Meyer, a local landscape architect, had suggested a double dune system where two dunes would protect us on the peninsula. The first dune would be sacrificial and the secondary reinforced dune would always be there if the first were compromised. One has to wonder how and why Walter’s idea and the idea of how well the stone groins worked along major portions of our peninsula did not make it into the 2013 PlaNYC SIRR report. Until the Army Corps of Engineers reveals a REAL plan to protect our peninsula all we can do is cross our fingers as we cross “the dunes” or should I say DOOMS, because with a hill of sand that’s where we’ll be: DOOMED!

So How Much To Fix Flooding?

This was the scene on Beach 92nd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard Wednesday all because of a high tide. Apparently there is a problem with the flap valve which is designed to keep water in the bay not at front doors. This is just from a high tide. What if there’s a full moon and rain?

Pieces of Rockaway Get Turned Into Wearable Art By Bianca Fortis After she felt stifled from a frustrating day job at a law firm that left her with no creative outlet, Lauren Rogoff turned a love for art into a side business. The fourth-generation Rockaway native moved to Manhattan after law school to work at a large firm. Frustrated with her job, she turned to her passion for crafting as a way to relax. Rogoff said one day she saw someone wearing a necklace that

had a piece of coral on it. She liked it, but thought a piece of coral might be too rough to wear. She set out to make her own jewelry, but with seaglass, weathered glass, which she’d be collecting since she was a child walking along the beach in Rockaway. Traditional seaglass jewelry tends to be a little “touristy, Rogoff said, so she adds her own flair to her pieces so that they are more modern and on trend. She incor-

porates vintage beads and chains and often paints the sea glass with colorful, geometric patterns and other abstract designs. She also sometimes uses pieces of pottery that she finds, some of which date back decades. She received regular compliments on the pieces when she wore them, and she soon realized she had too much jewelry to keep all to herself. So she started an online Etsy shop, which she named “Wandering Laur. Rogoff now works at a literary agency, a job she finds much more fulfilling, but she has continued to make jewelry as a side business. She makes the jewelry from her small Manhattan apartment. She said she is rarely in the apartment without working on jewelry in some way. “But it’s not out of any sense of obligation, she said. “It’s because I enjoy it. She keeps her supplies organized in a credenza, which was passed down from a great aunt in Rockaway. She still travels back to Rockaway to visit her family, as well as to find new artifacts along

the beach that she can incorporate into her work. “It still feels like home to me, she said. “It’s like this beautiful little California beach town. Her grandfather, who worked as a jeweler, in a way inspired Rogoff and also helps her learn new techniques. He worked with fine jewelry, but she grew up “watching him make beautiful things, she said. He also gave her the drill which she uses for her work. It was one of the few items the family was able to rescue before Hurricane Sandy. “It’s nice to think I’m continuing do something with jewelry, albeit in a different way, Rogoff said. She said she finds inspiration by the beach itself – she frequently uses bright, summery colors – as well as her travels. Southwestern and Native American tribal patterns provide some of the inspiration for the geometric patterns she paints on the seaglass. Besides the online store, her jewelry is available at End of the A, the mobile Rockaway boutique, as well as other boutiques throughout the city.

Schumer: Funds for Transportation, Housing Study in Rockaway to significant flooding of the area, service on the “A” train was suspended for six months due to damage from the storm, leaving residents stranded with limited access to jobs, education, and services. This study aims to provide a framework for improving the resiliency of the transportation network, reducing traffic problems and improving quality of life for residents Rockaway. This study was a primary recommendation by New York Rising, New York State’s community planning effort in neighborhoods heavily impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The coordination by NYCDOT and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development will address transportation options created by planned new housing development, and will identify ways to improve street safety, pedestrian and transit mobility, and the urban environment – helping Rockaway’s continued revival as a beach destination and bringing much-needed support to local businesses still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. “Superstorm Sandy highlighted a major flaw in our transportation network, including the long suspension of service along the “A” train in Rockaway,” Schumer said.

Senator CharleS SChumer Senator Charles Schumer on Tuesday announced that the New York City Department of Transportation will receive $1.4 million in federal funding to support a transportation and housing study in Rockaway. In April, Schumer wrote a letter of to the U.S. Department of Transportation supporting this project through the federal DOT’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Grant program, which provides funding for road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national objectives. The neighborhoods of Rockaway were among the hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. In addition

“This federal funding will help address limited transportation options, make recommendations on better housing, and provide much-needed support to local businesses in Rockaway still recovering from Superstorm Sandy. I am pleased to announce this $1.4 million in funding which will allow experts to work with community leaders to make detailed recommendations on transportation

improvements and also improving affordable housing in Rockaway.” The TIGER Discretionary Grant program provides an opportunity for DOT to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national objectives. In each round of TIGER, DOT receives many applications to build and repair critical pieces of freight and passenger transportation networks.

Summertime Blues AHOY ROCKAWAY! Water Temperature: 76*F - B111th St. The steam bath type weather that showed up this past week kept most anglers in the shade or inside. It came close to triple digit humidity and provided us with dew points that were in the 70’s. At one point we had 74 percent humidity and the dew point was 74* as well (yuck). This made any physical movement outdoors very uncomfortable, to say the least. The high humidity seemed to magnify the sun’s energy, as anyone that was outside on Saturday can tell you. Developing afternoon thunderstorms were also the norm

Page 29

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2014

and moving through the area very rapidly. Sunday brought much needed relief to the peninsula as dew points dropped way down into the low 50’s, the humidity dropped as well down to just 38 percent, allowing everyone to finally cool off. Jamaica bay and outside: Big Ron’s bait and tackle on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach. We stopped by the station and spoke with Big Ron and Ryan. Ron tells us that the bite is still on for fluke but, as you know there are many shorts mixed in with the keepers. Ron tells us that (on the outside), Rockaway reef is producing porgies that average in the 4

pound range, and that Leron, an avid angler from Big Ron’s, just recently caught a HUGE 70 lb. (yes 70 pound) black drum at the Rockaway reef. Ryan from Big Ron’s had some exciting news about the blue fish action that recently moved into the area. Ryan tells us that at the first red buoy (south of Shell bank creek) there has been some solid blue fish action going on. The local bridges (structure) and just off of Floyd Bennett Field also have porgy and blue fish activity. Tom’s Wave service station/bait and tackle on B.C.D in Rockaway Park: We called Tom today who said that the fluke are still here in the bay with lots of shorts. Tom also observed some productive snapper fishing going on near an Atlantic Beach jetty. An angler was using a “Kast-master” spoon lure (with a buck tail) to catch them repeatedly. It was noted that if there were snappers in the surf, there probably wasn’t any striped bass or bluefish in that particular area yet. Until next time, enjoy the cooler temperatures as we get closer to autumn. Courtesy of Dawn at Big Ron’s.

BattleRock3 to Storm Rockaway on September 27th known as great night of action, BattleRock3 expects close to 700 spectators at its upcoming show especially due to an all star line up of the east coast’s best up and comers along side more seasoned amateur thai boxers. The evening’s main event is sure to bring fireworks featuring an USKA Welterwight title fight between Omar Estevez of Sitan, NY and Julio Pena of Hard Knocks Muay Thai in Boston, MA. CROM’s owner and head coach Chris Romulo says of his inspira-

tion for his BattleRock promotion, “Besides being a huge fight fan and wanting to put on some of the most exciting and well matched fights for the general Muay Thai fan, our main goal is to create more exposure for the art of Thai Boxing here in the Rockaways. We are already known as a surf and skate town, but I see the Rockaways as a fitness and martial arts town as well! The Rockaways are my stomping grounds, and I hope to lead the community into different ways of evolving, as Muay Thai has helped me stay on the straight

and narrow for many years. Come see the beauty and excitement that this sport has to offer on 9/27!” BattleRock3: A Night of Muay Thai What: USKA Sanctioned Muay Thai amateur bouts from the best fighters in the North East When: Saturday, Sept 27th, 2014, doors open at 6pm, First Fight 7pm Where: Beach Channel High School Visit www.battle-rock.com to purchase tickets For further inquiries, please contact: info@crom-mt.com

Rockaway artist Brent Birnbaum had been mulling over the idea of opening an art gallery since he moved to the peninsula last spring. He thought opening the space in an abandoned storefront could be a creative way to offer a “different type of relief for local residents. “I wanted to do what I could for the community to bring my knowledge as someone who’s been in that scene for a decade, Birnbaum, 36, said. “It’s a resource that I could share with the community. Birnbaum joined forces in

April with another New York City artist, Jenni Crain, to open “Topless, a small gallery on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 91st Street. The name — “Topless — was chosen to be provocative and tongue-in-cheek. “I wanted to signify that our gallery is different.
