message from the mcc council president We are accomplishing very good things in Michigan. We are investing nearly $2 million into the equipment, infrastructure, program and food at our summer camps! We are the top Area in the Nation in terms of Youth Protection Training, with nearly 94% of our leaders in Michigan trained! Two of our Field Service Councils experienced overall membership growth in 2016, and one has done so three years in a row! And We in the Michigan Crossroads Council have adopted a plan for sustained financial viability through balanced budgeting on a two year cycle and an emphasis on cub scout growth! We are not just cutting. We are investing. If We work as a team, We expect to become The example for resource management and membership growth and support in the country. I have not defined the pronoun “We”, and will do so for you now. You are part of “We.” Every scout, volunteer and professional in Michigan is part of “We.” Every volunteer committee, field service council, district and alumni organization are part of “We.” Scouting in Michigan will achieve greater success if all of us build relationships with each other, cross communicate and mold into one resilient and high performing team. Great strides have been made, but our team has not reached its potential. Please assist us in becoming the best scouting “We” ever assembled. We must count on We! It is our only path for the greatest success. Yours in Scouting, Raymond Davis, President Michigan Crossroads Council

TUCSON, AZ. – A manila envelope from Amazon was filled with memories for Randy Orwig, Vice President of Volunteer Engagement for the Southern Shores Field Service Council. A few hours after receiving the envelope which held a book titled “Legendary Leadership Lessons – The Reading Pig”, Orwig said he received a phone call from the sender and author of the book, Nicholas Clement, who worked with him on the camp staff at Rota Kiwan more than 30 years ago. Even though Clement was living in Arizona he had been following Orwig’s professional and Scouting careers.
4
“He knew that I had been Council President and that I had recently presented the North Star Award in our area and that’s what prompted him to send the book and reconnect,” Orwig said. “I’d heard he was in Arizona and that’s why getting this book was so out of the blue. The name on the front of the book didn’t
register with me and looking at the picture on the back, it still didn’t register with me.” But, when he opened the book and started looking through it, he noticed the title for Chapter 3 – “Let’s Have a 76-Hour Campfire” and saw photographs from Philmont Scout Ranch and Rota Kiwan, in addition to a recounting of the time Clement made his way down into a latrine to clean it out. Among the other memories Clement put into words was a Stargazing class he attended that was conducted by Bill Breyfogle, a longtime volunteer at Rota Kiwan, who told the Scouts gathered that it took 50 years for the light to make it to where they were. “At that moment my dad who was spending the night with us quipped that he was attending Rota Kiwan as a camper when the light started,” Clement said. “That’s when it registered with me,” Orwig said.
Clement said his latest book describes the situations he experienced as a leader and the lessons he learned. He said his time as a Boy Scout had a profound impact on him and he wanted to share the life-changing difference it made.
“Scouting is the reason I went into teaching. I wanted to have a career where I could work summers at camp.” - Clement All royalties from the book will be put into a foundation established by Clement to fund areas that he thinks are important. He is planning to make a donation to camperships that will enable a financially-challenged Scout or two to get to camp or Philmont. “He wants to be able to give back to Scouting so someone can have that mountaintop of a lifetime experience at Philmont,” Orwig said. “Fifty years ago he had a great life experience as a youth in Scouting and is now paying it forward.
cover story: Rota-kiwan scout reservation “That’s Nic. He’s got daughters, but the value of Scouting still resonates with him.” “One of the chapters focuses on the lessons I learned as a Scout during a trip to Philmont,” Clement said. “It was in 1976 and we decided to have a 76-hour campfire with songs and skits to try and get into the Guinness Book of World Records. But, we didn’t think about all of the intended and unintended consequences of this idea such as how we were going to keep this going after the first two hours.” The group did not break any records, but they did learn a valuable lesson about the importance of having a well-thought-out plan. Clement, who is the Ernest W. McFarland Citizen’s Chair in Education at Northern Arizona University, said for him the learning while in Scouting never stopped. Among the examples he cited was his Order of the Arrow experience where he was left out in the middle of nowhere with a match, an egg, and a piece of foil. “When I was at Philmont, I had to learn how to deal with adversity at camp when things went wrong and we had to make it right,” he said. “At
camp we got up early and went to bed late, but you still had work to get done so there was having to learn that work ethic where you are part of an organization and you are that organization.” During his younger years that organization was the Boy Scouts. Orwig said he and Clement worked together between 1972 and 1974 at Rota Kiwan. The majority of their time was spent at the waterfront. “When you spend time as a staff member that’s when you really get to know someone,” Orwig said. “Nick was a very, very good friend who I grew up with out there.” Clement, who started out as a Commissioner Aide, would spend a total of 10 years at Rota Kiwan. He taught Merit Badge courses such as camping, cooking, and hiking and was the liaison between Scoutmasters and the camp’s administration. He grew up in Gobles in a family steeped in Scouting. His dad, bothers and uncles were all involved in the program and his neighbor’s mom was his Cub Scout pack’s Den Leader.
“I found a niche and I was accepted,” Clement said. “I was never great at sports, but when I went to camp I found my own identity. I found success in things I didn’t think I could be successful at I was never great at. “Scouting provides a niche for success that other youth-focused organizations don’t necessarily have. There’s enough diversity and variety offered that you will find your strengths some way.” Orwig, who has been involved in Scouting for 54 years, said the programs offered are the same for everyone, but the way they are experienced differs. He said Scouting provides a safe environment to be challenged and experience failure.
“I’m very proud that I’m still involved. Growing up we had great adult leaders and role models. Our troop in southeast Portage did a lot of things like the importance of learning about community service and giving back. I wouldn’t be as civicallyminded if it hadn’t been for my time as a Boy Scout.” - Orwig

Christian “Chris” Townsend
Field Director Lenape, Nottawa Trails, Pathfinder and Wabano Districts
As the area’s new District Executive, Russell said he wants to grow the number of youth involved in Scouting, develop a community culture that embraces and supports the programs and services offered, and increase the level of community engagement for Scouts and adult volunteers.
Chris will have that chance as the new Field Director for the Lenape, Nottawa Trails, Pathfinder and Wabano districts which are part of the Boy Scouts Michigan Crossroads Council. His territory includes the counties of Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph Counties.

Chippewa District Committee extends thanks and appreciation to Shelby Patch Company for donating our special "Chippewa FOS Supporter" Patch to highlight this year's Friends of Scouting Campaign. EVERY person that turns in a pledge card at a local Friends of Scouting presentation receives this patch no matter what the amount. Vince Cinquegrani, CoChairman of Chippewa District's Campaign, has been supporting the campaign, both with time and finances, for many years. "We are really excited about this new element to our campaign," says Vince, "Everyone who turns in a pledge card, even if they can't personally afford a pledge this year, still gets a supporter patch for turning in a card and showing their participation by hearing the presentation. So everyone truly can be a supporter of the campaign." The campaign is already past 25% of our $112,000 goal. These dollars support all Scouting programs in Chippewa District by providing year-round support and training for leaders, providing programs like Cub Scout Day Camps and Blast-intoScouting events, and membership recruitment. Talk to your Pack, Troop, or Crew leadership to learn how you can be a supporter of Friends of Scouting or visit www.michiganscouting.org/imagine.

north star district district highlights District Gold Once More Thank you so much to all the fantastic district and unit level volunteer leaders. North Star achieved Gold Journey to Excellence status for 2016, after only reaching Silver status in 2015. In 2016 North Star units increased the number of both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts advancing in rank, increased the number of service hours reported, and increased the number of scouts camping (both short term and long term). The district also increased the number of trained unit leaders, as well as the number of units being served by a commissioner. The district’s fundraising effort reflected this program success, with the Friends of Scouting team not only hitting their goal but surpassing it by 5%. North Star Eagle Scout Receives Award for Service Project Kevin Cragg of Troop 1032 was recently recognized for his outstanding service project completed this past June, and has been selected to receive the Glenn & Melinda Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award for the Great Lakes Field Service Council. Kevin raised $17,000 to purchase a movable Rolling Thunder Greenhouse for Forgotten Harvest, extending their harvest season by 3 months. After building and installing the greenhouse, his project also included purchasing and planting 650 cherry tomato plants, which have gone on to produce 2,000 pounds of tomatoes. Now, even in the winter it’s being utilized to grow kale. Kevin will be honored with the award at the annual Building Character Celebration dinner on March 2nd.

President Ford Field Service Council Building Character Celebration We invite you to join with us to celebrate the achievements of our newest class of Eagle Scouts during our annual Building Character Celebration from 5-9 p.m. on March 16 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Our keynote speaker is Dick DeVos, a Grand Rapids native, philanthropist and businessman, who will share some thoughts about the mission and values of Scouting. The Building Character Celebration was born from decades of annual recognition events honoring the highest youth achievers in the Scouting program, Eagle Scouts. Today the Building Character Celebration continues as the largest and strongest community event in Michigan, if not the nation, celebrating the Scouting program with the honoring of our previous Eagle Scout and Summit Award Recipient Class at the heart of the program. This gala style dinner event begins in the evening with a reception followed by dinner. Our stage program honors and recognizes the previous year’s class of Eagle Scouts and Summit Award Recipients. Each year at the event we also award our annual North Star award and NOESA.

Lions are on the rise in Lakeshore! Pack 3028, chartered to the First Congregational Church in Saugatuck, hosted a Lions recruitment in January that turned out to be very successful. With some simple planning, a few flyers, and an enthusiastic energy, they were able to recruit not 2, not 3, but 8 new Lions! On top of that, they also found a new Lion Guide that is about as energized about Lions as the new Scouts are. The group whipped up a quick calendar of meetings and activities and are now off and running with a solid group of eager-to-have-fun Lion Scouts! Is your Pack thinking about Lions? Well, you should be! Success stories like Pack 3028s are happening all over with the Lions program, and you can go out and get those Scouts today! Connect with your Pack’s Commissioner or RJ Winter, Lakeshore’s very own Membership Chair, for more information about Lions or any recruitment help. Welcome To Our New Unit Service Executive! Please join us in welcoming Robert Silvernail as our newest Unit Service Executive for Lakeshore and Pere Marquette Districts. Robert’s Scouting journey began as a Cub Scout. New Cub Scouting Programs Launched The Monroe County Museum has redesigned its Cub Scout programs to support requirements found in the latest editions of the Cub Scout handbooks. Multiple programs are available for each Cub Scout rank at no cost to the participants, but interested Packs or Dens must contact the Museum to schedule rank-specific workshops in advance. In addition to handbook-based programs, the Museum also offers a self-guided Historical Marker Trail. Visiting just five of the many historical markers around downtown Monroe earns each Cub Scout hiker the opportunity to purchase a commemorative patch for $1 from the Museum Gift Shop—Boy Scouts can qualify for the patch by visiting ten markers. A downloadable list of available Cub Scout workshops, as well as a list of Historic Marker locations, can be found at monroecountymuseum. com under the Educational Programs tab. The Monroe County Museum is located at 126 South Monroe Street Monroe, MI 48161. For additional information on Scouting programs, or to schedule a Cub Scout workshop, please call 734-240-7784.

Spring Recruitment Workshop Tuesday, March 28th 7pm-8:30pm Grace United Methodist Church (1900 Boston Blvd, Lansing, MI 48910) Would you like to recruit some brand new Cub Scouts and Tiger Scouts BEFORE school begins this fall? The Chief Okemos District encourages you to have a spring recruitment or even just a TIGER HUNT in April/May. Did you know that graduated Kindergarteners are officially considered 1st graders on June 1, 2017? Some benefits of recruiting new Tiger Cubs in the spring are: Tigers’ first Scouting experience could be Day Camp this summer! You could potentially FIND and TRAIN a Tiger Cub Leader this summer, instead of begging for one at School Night! Ease a Tiger Cub and his family into Scouting with a few fun, recreational summer events. Please remember, doing a spring recruitment only works if you have at least one activity planned in June, July and August so you deliver on the promise of fun right away (did you know there is an award for that?) Service Hours Thank you to those of you who recorded your unit's service hours in 2016! This data helps us present the strength of our district to local community members. Keep up the good work and remember to record the service hours online:

On Sunday February 12th, three scouts from Pinconning Troop # 139 in the Shoreline district were awarded the Eagle Scout award. As two of the three are brothers, and they are all great friends, this is an even greater celebration. Troop # 139 presently has less than 12 registered Scouts, so these three new Eagles represent over 1/3 of their entire unit! Congrats to Tayler, Chance, and Tyrus.
