THE CRAFT OF VINYL: HOW RECORDS ARE MADE

Vinyl records—those shiny black discs that hold our favorite songs—are more than just a nostalgic music format. They are tangible pieces of art and engineering, created through a meticulous and fascinating process that bridges the worlds of craftsmanship and science. Here's a closer look at how these beloved records come to life.

The Mastering Process The journey of a vinyl record begins in a recording studio, where songs are captured and mixed. Once the final audio mix is ready, the mastering engineer prepares it specifically for vinyl. This involves adjusting frequencies, dynamic range, and volume to ensure the music translates well to the unique characteristics of vinyl playback.

One crucial step is to reduce excessive bass or treble that could cause the needle to jump or distort the sound. The audio is then cut onto a lacquer disc or, in some cases, a metal master disc. This is done using a lathe, which inscribes the sound waves as a continuous spiral groove onto the surface of the disc.

Creating the Stamper After the master lacquer is cut, it undergoes a process called electroplating. A thin layer of silver or nickel is applied to the lacquer disc, creating a negative mold—an exact inverse of the grooves containing the music. This mold, known as the “father,” is used to create additional positives (“mothers”) and ultimately the stampers.

Stampers are the final metal molds used in the pressing process. They are durable and can withstand the high pressure required to press vinyl records. One side of the stamper is made for each side of the record.

Pressing the Vinyl With the stampers ready, the magic of turning raw materials into a playable record begins. Small pellets of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are heated and formed into a "biscuit" or "puck." This soft, puck-like material is placed between the stampers in a hydraulic press.

Under immense pressure (up to several tons) and heat (around 300 degrees Fahrenheit), the puck is flattened into a disc, with the grooves from the stamper transferred onto its surface. Simultaneously, labels are pressed into the center of the record. This step is quick but crucial—a single record can be pressed in less than a minute.

Trimming and Inspection Once pressed, the excess vinyl, or "flash," is trimmed from the edges to create a clean, circular shape. Each record is then inspected for defects, such as warping, scratches, or imperfections in the grooves. High-quality pressing plants use visual inspections and playback tests to ensure every record meets their standards.

Packaging the Finished Product The final step is packaging. The records are slipped into inner sleeves to protect them from dust and scratches, then placed

in their album jackets. Many modern records include extras like lyric sheets, posters, or digital download codes. The attention to detail in this stage is just as important as in the pressing process, as it contributes to the overall experience of owning and playing vinyl.

A Perfect Blend of Art and Science The creation of a vinyl record is a labor of love that combines technical precision and artistic vision. From the grooves that hold the music to the design of the album cover, every aspect of vinyl production contributes to the format's enduring appeal.

My Vinyl, My Soul: A LOVE LETTER TO YOU

When I think about the things I cherish most in this world, my vinyl collection is right there at the top. It’s more than just a hobby—it’s part of who I am. Each record on my shelf tells a story, not just of the artist but of me and the moments those songs have carried me through. I got into vinyl after a few treasures were passed down to me by my grandparents. Technically, I was only meant to “borrow” them—but, well, you can probably guess how that went.

Vinyl isn’t just a way to listen to music; it’s an entire history. There’s something almost sacred about sliding a record out of its sleeve, dropping it onto the turntable, and hearing that first crackle before the music hits. It’s raw, imperfect, and completely alive. Streaming is convenient, sure, but it’ll never touch the magic of analog sound.

Every pop and hiss on a record feels personal, like it’s been tailored just for you in that very moment.

L.A.’s been through a lot recently—wild weather, political shifts, and the unfortunate challenges that come with such a huge climate disaster. It is safe to say we’ve felt far from comfortable. And as these uncertain wildfires crept closer, I found myself staring at my collection and realizing that these records aren’t just things—they’re memories pressed into wax. As ash drifted in the sky and the air thickened with smoke, I packed up several copies of my most precious vinyl to ship home to New York.

Some people may think it’s silly to worry about records when the universe feels like it’s burning away—literally—but if you get it, you get it. Everyone moves differently in a crisis.

Looking back, I feel lucky to say I attended Charli XCX’s vinyl signings in L.A. this past summer. brat really was the moment - the album’s lush and futuristic production takes on this whole other dimension when you’re listening to it spin. It’s cinematic, intimate,

and invigorating all at once. I’m not just Julia listening to a record—I’m so Juliaaaaaa. It’s like the song was written for me, for the way anyone exists when the beat begins…

That’s the thing about vinyl: it doesn’t just play—it gets under your skin, rewires you for a few minutes, and rhythmically makes you feel real. Shoutout to the track “360” because sometimes, the music really does know you better than you know yourself.

As I sit in my K-Town apartment, I am readily reminded why these pieces of plastic mean a great deal to me. My vinyl isn't just a stack of old records; it's a collection of discs that capture pure euphoria. When the world feels unsteady, vinyl has this way of grounding you. It’s steady, warm, and sincere in a way that nothing else is. Maybe it’s nostalgia, perhaps it’s that undeniable richness only analog sound can bring.

Proper Storage The way you store your records can significantly impact their lifespan. Follow these storage tips to keep your vinyl safe: Store Vertically: Always store records upright to prevent warping. Leaning them at an angle can cause uneven pressure and permanent damage to the discs.

Use Shelving: Invest in sturdy, highquality shelving units that can bear the weight of multiple records. Popular choices include cube storage systems, which neatly accommodate record sleeves.

Avoid Heat and Humidity: Keep your records in a cool, dry place. Excessive heat can warp vinyl, while high humidity can lead to mold and mildew. Aim for a stable temperature around 65-70°F and relative humidity between 40-50%.

Inner and Outer Sleeves: Protect your records from dust and scratches by using anti-static inner sleeves. Outer plastic sleeves can shield album covers from wear and tear.

Cleaning Your Records Dust and debris can accumulate on your records over time, affecting sound quality and potentially causing damage. Here's how to keep them clean: Use a Carbon Fiber Brush: Before and after playing, use a carbon fiber brush to remove surface dust from the grooves.

Handling and Playing Records How you handle and play your records directly affects their condition. Keep these best practices in mind: Handle by the Edges: Avoid touching the grooves. Oils from your fingers can attract dirt and degrade sound quality over time.

Use a Quality Turntable: A wellmaintained turntable with a properly calibrated tonearm and stylus ensures smooth playback without damaging your records.

Check the Stylus Regularly: A worn or dirty stylus can scratch the grooves of your vinyl. Clean the stylus regularly and replace it when needed.

Don’t Stack Records: Never stack records on top of one another, as this can cause warping and damage to the grooves and sleeves.

Protecting Album Covers Album covers are as much a part of the vinyl experience as the music itself. To preserve them: Use Outer Sleeves: Transparent outer sleeves prevent scuffs and fading.

Keep Away from Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause album covers to fade and the vinyl itself to warp.

Handle with Care: Avoid bending or folding album covers. If you're removing a record, support the sleeve with one hand and slide the record out gently.

There’s something enchanting about the analog world—a tactile, imperfect beauty that digital just can’t replicate. Whether I’m watching a 35mm film flicker to life at the New Beverly or stepping into the tiny confines of an analog photo booth, there’s a magic in these experiences that feels real, raw, and deeply personal. Vinyl, for me, embodies this magic.

Working in film has taught me to appreciate storytelling in its purest form. A strip of film, much like the grooves of a vinyl record, is a vessel for art, carrying the weight of its creator’s vision. Both require care, respect, and a willingness to immerse yourself in the moment. They’re physical, tangible reminders of the stories and emotions that connect us.

When I started my vinyl collection, I was very intentional about the records I brought into my life. I only collected albums that originally came out on vinyl—something about that felt authentic, like I was honoring the medium and the time it came from. Each record had a story, not just in its music but in its place in history. Over time, I’ve sort of veered away from that strict rule, but those early days shaped how I approached my collection: with care, reverence, and purpose.
