It is part of my efforts to put the study of social and cultural history and social change on a scientific basis capable of rational analysis and understanding. The idea that matter was made up of tiny particles called atoms goes back to Ancient Greece where Leucippus and Democritus claimed all matter consisted of atoms and empty space. This idea was not widely accepted and from the time of Ancient Greece until the late 18th century, the western world generally considered all matter was made up of mixtures, in various proportions, of the basic elements of water, air, earth and fire. Traditional Chinese beliefs were similar and considered all matter was made up of water, earth, wood, metal and fire. The traditional view of the elements ended when scientists showed air was made up of other substances such as nitrogen and oxygen and water was made up of oxygen and
