The Women’s Premier teams contest the CRL Challenge Trophy whilst the Men’s Premier teams contest for the Pat Smith Memorial Trophy. Pat Smith captained the Kiwis 1946 1949 and was inducted into the Legends of League at a centenary celebration function on the West Coast in 2007. Three generations of Pat Smith’s family are here today, to present the eventual Premier Champions with the trophy. To conclude I would like to acknowledge the groups of volunteers who without their support we wouldn’t have rugby league in Canterbury. The Clubs in Canterbury and their hardworking senior and junior committees, CRL Referee’s group, and the CRL Board. Many who participate in our game do not realise the work and effort that goes in behind the scenes by these groups to ensure there are clubs, teams and officials for grades and games to be a part of. Thank you all. Ngā mihi nui. Malcolm Humm Chief Executive Officer Canterbury Rugby League

Smith’s contribution to rugby league continued after his retirement as a player. He was a founder of the Marist club and president from 1960 66, coached Papanui and Marist, was a selector for Canterbury and South Island, and served as CRL President in 1967.

The Pat Smith Trophy has been Canterbury Rugby League’s ultimate prize for over fifty years, awarded to the winning side in each year’s grand final since a playoffs system replaced the first past the post format to decide the premiership in 1967.

Pat Smith, who passed away in 1981, was inducted as a New Zealand Legend of League in 2009, while his enormous local legacy lives on with the winning captain hoisting the trophy bearing his name after the Canterbury Rugby League grand final every year.

The hooker/prop boasts the unique honour of having captained New Zealand in all 10 of his international appearances and 38 matches overall from 1947 49, leading the Kiwis to Test wins over Great Britain, France and Australia.

An excellent rugby union forward, Patrick Attwood Smith switched codes and was one of New Zealand’s most prominent rugby league players in the immediate post World War II period. Smith turned out for Addington and Hornby before playing an integral role in the formation of the Prebbleton club in 1947, steering it to a historic premiership win two years later.
