We’re a nation of immigrants

This past Saturday I was privileged to attend a birthday party for a 60-year-old medical doctor. She and her three siblings legally immigrated to the US approximately 50 years ago from India with what they could carry in their luggage and very few other resources. All of the children studied hard and became medical doctors. The husband of the birthday celebrant is also from India and is a doctor. He has a PhD in physics and has several patents. Are they a typical immigrant family? Perhaps not, but their motivation, hard work, and success is typical. Foreigners make up two-thirds of our PhD candidates in math and science, and disproportionately account for tech startups. We are all immigrants, and we need to continue to welcome immigrants if we want to keep America great. DOUGLAS ROBB

Mixed reviews for CRDS plan

they are keeping most of the campus intact. I’m not thrilled with the new building at the corner, right next to the park. I would rather see that elsewhere, preferably off the property. Hopefully, the new building will incorporate design elements that reflect the main buildings and park attributes. BRIAN KEITH

CITY’s changes

Just read CITY’s letter about impending changes to the way you’ll provide news to your readers. Bummer! This bodes ill. The traditional role of the media has been print media for detailed/in-depth reporting, TV and radio for “breaking news,” and radio for access to news on-the-road. While technology and social media have blurred these lines by giving print media the same ability to provide “breaking news” (and cable TV the ability to provide in-depth coverage, an ability they’ve badly squandered), when newspapers have started to downsize their traditional role and started expanding their social media footprint, they tend to emphasize “human interest” and “soft news” fluff instead of real news, all in an effort to attract more internet hits. In addition, the easily ignored ads printed in newspapers wind up being replaced with totally obnoxious pop up ads on Facebook. Bottom line is that a newspaper’s bottom line is not the bottom line of their readers. So guess whose bottom line ends up on the bottom? MICHAEL J. NIGHAN

Lessons for Democrats from ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Cuts in funding for health care, health-insurance coverage, and nursetraining programs. For infrastructure improvements. For job training and job creation. For home heating assistance, housing assistance, cancer research, college-tuition aid for low-income students. This is what we get in the budget that Donald Trump put forth last week. And all of the cuts will hurt the very people who form the base of his support. Anyone listening to Trump during the campaign could predict what he would do, but millions of people voted for him anyway. And you get some insight into their reasons if you read J.D. Vance’s best seller, “Hillbilly Elegy.” On the surface, the book is a memoir, Vance’s story of growing up in Middletown, Ohio, in a highly dysfunctional family from the mountains of Kentucky. One step up from dirt poor, Vance was raised by adults who were foul-mouthed, obsessively proud, and prone to violence. But those adults also cared for him. And a few of them valued education. Highly. And so thanks to those few, plus the United States Marines and others, Vance ended up getting a law degree from Yale. If that’s all you take away from the book, you’ll see it as an inspirational, bootstraps story. Proof that anybody can make it, despite the odds. If you didn’t grow up in the South, you may be tempted to think Vance’s book has relevance only to the Southern Appalachians, yet another light shone on the backwardness and cultural grotesqueness of Southerners. At the risk of letting my own hillbilly roots warp my judgment, let me offer a word of caution: there’s a much bigger story here. Because while Vance focuses on Southern Appalachia – the culture that shaped him (and me as well) – the unease, the estrangement, the distrust of various “establishments” that hillbillies feel – isn’t unique to the Southern mountains. Southern Appalachia isn’t the only region of the country where decent-paying jobs have all but disappeared. It isn’t the only region where second and third generations of children are leaving school poorly equipped to get what few good jobs exist. Where adults have lost faith in the American dream. The hillbillies of Southern Appalachia didn’t elect Donald Trump all by themselves. Their pain and resentment may have its own peculiar, Scots-Irish roots, but similar pain and resentment exists throughout the country. The hillbillies of my native region may have been suffering from it longer (coalminers

Southern Appalachia isn’t the only region of the country where decent-paying jobs have all but disappeared and adults have lost hope.” have been watching their jobs evaporate for decades), but a lot of America is experiencing the same thing. Jobs have disappeared. And when jobs disappear, bad things happen. And people look for answers, and for hope. That’s resilience. And those people deserve credit, and respect, not ridicule. They also deserve political leaders who recognize the problem and believe they have a responsibility to help find solutions. Donald Trump jetted around the country promising help. Hillbillies in Kentucky and West Virginia weren’t the only people who crammed into airplane hangars wearing red caps and shouting their angry support for him. Donald Trump was elected by people in Southern Appalachia – and in the mountains and hills and farmlands of New York State, Wyoming, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Michigan. This is a deeply divided nation, and we’d better understand what has caused that division. Racism plays a part, yes, in many people. Racism and nativism and religious prejudice. But our division has other causes, too. Donald Trump’s promises about restoring manufacturing jobs and Mitch McConnell’s pledge to end “the war on coal” are shams – deliberate, willful deceptions. For multiple reasons, Democrats couldn’t counter that in the last election. Maybe that’s because they, too, are too far removed from a part of America that needed their help. If that’s the case, Vance has opened a door for them, introducing them to that America and the people who live there. They’d better start getting acquainted with them. rochestercitynewspaper.com

State closes charter school

Rochester Career Mentoring Charter School will close at the end of this school year. State officials ordered the closure after the school failed to meet performance requirements and officials challenged the school’s graduation reports. The school, which was founded in 2012, emphasized mentoring focused on career exploration. The first senior class graduated in 2016, but many of the students received a local diploma, which are given to students with serious learning disabilities.

Schneiderman says that weakening the standards would hurt efforts to cut pollution from automobiles.

For example, a US Army Corps of Engineers project to restore habitat in Braddock Bay uses GLRI funds.

PARKS | BY JEREMY MOULE

Cyclists want to connect parks The rugged trails of Tryon Park and Irondequoit Bay Park West make them popular with hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers – the latter in particular, since these are the only parks in Monroe County’s system where offroad cycling is allowed. The two parks are close together, too, which means cyclists and runners often go back and forth between them. But they lack any sort of formal connection, leaving users to improvise their route. And that frequently means crossing the busy, four-lane section of Empire Boulevard along Tryon. It’s not the safest scenario, says Genesee Regional Off-Road Cyclists (GROC) President Jeff Wright.

“We want to try and avoid this situation and get people off Empire Boulevard,” Wright says. GROC officials have a proposal to fix the problem, and they’re seeking the county’s approval to move ahead with it. The group wants to extend an existing trail in Tryon’s north end to Irondequoit Boulevard, a neighborhood street with a sidewalk that veers out to Empire. The link would make it simpler for park users to get to the traffic signal at Empire and North Winton, a point where they could safely cross. They could then use Empire’s sidewalks to get to either of the parks.

The group presented the plan to the county’s Parks Advisory Committee last week. After a monthlong comment period, the committee will make a recommendation to county parks director Larry Staub, who will ultimately decide whether to approve the project, says county spokesperson Brett Walsh. For now, the county is taking no position on the plan, Walsh says. Wright says GROC will pay for the costs to create the trail and will do the work; its members already volunteer hundreds of hours each year maintaining trails in the two parks.

A stumbling block for the SUNY Geneseo proposal may be funding. Currently, School 19 has one teacher per classroom. The Geneseo proposal calls for two general education teachers, a special education teacher, and a teaching assistant in every class.

EDUCATION | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

School board weighs Geneseo proposal SUNY Geneseo inched closer last week to a partnership with the Rochester school board and School 19, a K-8 school in southwest Rochester. It’s a sign that the board is continuing to seek outside organizations to help turn around some of its most troubled schools. In a presentation to the board on March 16, a team of district and SUNY Geneseo educators made a strong case for taking over the management of the low-performing school and revamping its current structure. The teacher-led school they described could dramatically improve School 19 students’ achievement over five years, they said. SUNY Geneseo officials hope that the partnership would start this summer, but first they have to get approval of the school board and SUNY officials at the state level. School board President Van White, who spearheaded the board’s partnership with the University of Rochester and East High School, courted SUNY Geneseo’s involvement with School 19. White has repeatedly pushed for creating more school choices for parents while the district simultaneously improves its most academically challenged schools. “We need incubators of success,” White said before the meeting. “We’ll be able to compare, and we’ll know if these models work.”

Currently each classroom at School 19 has one general education teacher. In addition, special education teachers provide services for classrooms with children needing that assistance. In the SUNY Geneseo model, two classrooms would be combined, with staff acting as a team: two general education teachers, a special education teacher, and a teaching assistant. A pilot program was implemented in School 19’s third and fifth grades in September, and the results in reading and math seem promising. School 19’s teachers and principal would work together to develop the curriculum and school culture. And a yet to be named superintendent of the school would report to the board. But Anjoo Sikka, dean of Geneseo’s school of education, said that there was no need to renegotiate labor contracts. The UR, in contrast, reached an agreement with the board and union employees to ask every individual working at East High to reapply for employment there. For the school board, the bigger stumbling block for the Geneseo proposal may be funding. School 19 would receive a $2.5 million school improvement grant from the state over five years. But the Geneseo proposal requires additional teachers and teaching assistants, and it’s not clear whether the state grant would be enough to cover all of them. White told Geneseo officials last night that

The state has identified School 19 in South West Rochester as a school “in need of improvement.” FILE PHOTO

the partnership can’t require additional district funding above School 19’s yearly budget. Board member Jose Cruz also expressed concern that the partnership relies heavily on a state grant at a time of uncertainty about federal funding for public education. Nor are academic results guaranteed. The UR’s relationship with East High, now in its second year, is showing some incremental gains, but the school’s academic performance is a long way from a complete turnaround. Still, the proposed SUNY Geneseo partnership with School 19 has some strong support. “I think it would be devastating if the board rejected it,” Rochester Teachers Association President Urbanski said at the board meeting, “because it would send the message to the rest of the district teachers – don’t even try to innovate.”

IMMIGRATION | JAKE CLAPP

For undocumented workers, a rock and a hard place For Dolores Bustamante, driving a car is a symbol of independence. It’s also a necessity. A farm worker in rural Wayne County, she needs transportation to get to work and to buy food and take care of other personal needs. But because Bustamante is an undocumented worker, she can’t get a driver’s license. So even her driving is illegal. Thirteen years ago, Bustamante and her 3-year-old daughter fled their home in Mexico to escape an abusive relationship. “Unfortunately, I was a victim of violence,” Bustamante said in an interview last weekend, through a translator. There were limited opportunities for women in Morelos, Mexico, and “I had to depend on someone,” she said. “I wanted to make a life for myself, so I wouldn’t experience abuse. When I finally was able to depend on myself, that’s when I was pulled over and turned over to Immigration.” Bustamante has been an apple farm worker in Wayne County for several years, and is seen by many as an important community member and advocate for farm workers’ rights Upstate. But because she is an undocumented immigrant, when she was pulled over by state police in 2014 for speeding, she was handed over to immigration authorities. She now faces deportation, and if she wants her daughter to stay in the US, she’ll be separated from her. There is a spot between a rock and a hard place that many undocumented immigrants, like Bustamante, find themselves in. Coming to the US through the system with a visa or refugee status takes months or, more likely, years. It’s doubtful that Bustamante would even fit the criteria for either possibility. And once someone is in the country illegally, there aren’t many ways to gain legal status. While political rhetoric around immigration tends to focus on violent criminals, non-violent immigrants often get caught up by policies that don’t make a distinction. Many undocumented farm laborers are in the country looking for real, hard work — and our agricultural system has come to crucially depend on them. Others, like Bustamante, have fled a dangerous situation. But undocumented immigrants face a lot of barriers, such as the inability 6 CITY

MARCH 22-28, 2017

to have a driver’s license and a restrictive immigration system that weighs everyone who is here illegally by the same measure as those violent criminals. That’s forcing many immigrants living in rural New York to become ever more isolated, advocates say. “We only want to work to get our families ahead and be OK,” Bustamante said, “and not fear what could happen. If we have to call the police, and then they come and ask for my papers….” “I want people to know that people suffer,” she said. “We are human; we feel it. And it’s hard to separate from your family. We aren’t criminals. We came to work. We want to help our families.” When Bustamante came to the US, she found her way to New Jersey, where she had to work two jobs for a while to make ends meet. She meant too little time with her daughter, so she decided to take a job in Florida as a farm worker. “It was really hard work,” she said. “But I got to spend more time with my daughter.” In 2009, she followed the seasons up to New York State to work on apple farms for a few months. She went back to Florida but in 2012 moved back to New York to live year-round. Since then, she’s become an active member of the Workers’ Center of Central New York, and a leader in Alianza de Mujeres Campesinas, a group that’s sent her to speak at Harvard Law School twice — once about female farmworkers and another time about sustainable agriculture. Still, when she was pulled over in 2014, Customs and Border Protection was called. “Along the northern border, we have been facing unprecedented numbers of people being turned over to Border Patrol by our local law enforcement,” says Carly Fox, a workers rights advocate with the Worker Justice Center of New York. “And it’s caused a real fear of law enforcement by those who are targeted. And in most of the country, that doesn’t happen.”

Another immigrant farm worker and labor activist, José Coyote Pérez, is currently being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia. Pérez has been in the US for 15 years, has a wife and children, and has a US work permit. A previous ICE case — apparently a result of a previous minor traffic violation — was closed in September 2016, but on February 24, Pérez reported for a checkin and was arrested. The reason for the arrest isn’t immediately clear, Fox says. Some advocates believe it is related to a 911 call Pérez made two days before after being assaulted by a co-worker. “Dolores and José have both been highlighting what’s been going on in the community,” says John Ghertner of the Greater Rochester Coalition for Immigration Justice. “I’m not going to say test case, but they are emblematic of what’s going on.” Ghertner says things have recently started to heat up. National rhetoric, especially from President Donald Trump, has “just sent this almost palpable sense of fear back into the community of farm workers,” says Ghertner. “Now more and more people are being picked up. They’re given less

opportunity to defend themselves. And the ones that are detained: they’re given less opportunity to get bail so they can get out and defend themselves.” For undocumented farm workers, there just aren’t many defenses, and that’s leaving many feeling isolated and wary of law enforcement. Advocates are pushing to educate local law enforcement agencies about the impact of their policies, and groups like Green Light NY are campaigning for driver’s license access for undocumented residents. Meanwhile, Bustamante is appealing her deportation case. She had a court hearing on March 15, and was given 60 days until her next hearing. If she were to be deported, her daughter would be allowed to stay under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. “I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen,” she said last weekend. “But I feel like right now I have a little time to spend with my daughter and cherish these moments.”

Think spring [ CHOW HOUND ] BY KATIE LIBBY

Even though it may not seem that way — especially after Stella wreaked havoc on our city last week — spring is technically here. The snow may still crunch under our feet, but the intoxicating smell of French fries and gravy will soon be in the air as Le Petit Poutine starts the engines of its food trucks at the end of the month. You can follow its route on Facebook or Twitter (@lepetitpoutine). We tend to eat heavier in the wintertime; comfort foods stick to your ribs and enable you to sink further into the couch while you Netflix your way through the cold. When the weather gets warmer and springtime produce becomes available, menu items tend to lighten up and embrace the season’s ingredients. CITY pulled together some dishes from area restaurants that embrace the “Think Spring” mentality. Springtime is prime asparagus season and you’ll find that ingredient highlighted in the Specked Scallops ($30) at Nosh (47 Russell Street; noshroc.com). The dish pairs jumbo scallops with asparagus risotto, smoked

prosciutto, brown butter, and charred lemon. Beets are at their peak in the spring and summer months, and Good Luck (50 Anderson Avenue; restaurantgoodluck. com) is celebrating the ingredient with the Salad of Beets 3 Ways ($15). Roasted, raw, and pickled beets are combined with frisèe, citrus, and candied cashews, and served with a melted camembert crostini. Orbs (758 South Avenue; orbsrestaurant.com) has a Rockin Beet salad ($7) on the menu that highlights the beet by salt roasting it, and pairing it First Light chèvre cheese, market greens, pecans, balsamic, and maple hibiscus purèe. Roux’s (688 Park Avenue; rouxparkave. com) Pan Seared Halibut ($29) pairs the buttery, delicate fish with spring ingredients, like leeks, potatoes, greens, and a saffron veloutè. And Han Noodle Bar (687 Monroe Avenue; hannoodlebar.com) sautés seasonal greens with garlic ($8.50). April and May is the time to find wild mushrooms and Fiorella (5 Rochester Public Market; restaurantfiorella.com) uses fungi from Smugtown Mushrooms to top its pizza.

Try adding mushrooms to the Marinara pizza ($12), topped with plum tomato sauce, garlic, basil, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil. What’s your favorite Rochester dish to eat in the springtime? Let us know in the comments below this article online at rochestercitynewspaper.com.

[ MUSIC FEATURE ] BY FRANK DE BLASE

At the heart of the songwriter is the song … or perhaps it’s the other way around. A song is there to convey, cajole, and even confuse, depending on the songwriter’s message or intent. It’s there to celebrate, and it’s there to condemn. It can instigate. It can seethe. It can soothe. Although a song is an entity unto itself, it rarely starts out that way, and certainly not alone. Songs don’t usually write themselves. There are myriad — infinite, really —

influences and approaches that can make a song soar when handled properly. It all hinges on what the composer wants understood and the perception of the listener: those who weren’t at the conception and who don’t have a clue about a song’s background. Does the music allude to what the lyrics are saying, or are they on their own trip? When pressed for answers and at least a little clarification, some musicians can be a bit vague or obtuse,

while others make so much sense it’s scary. CITY picked the brains of six Rochester musicians of assorted stripes for a little look into the process, to see what defines them, what captivates them, and what they in turn use to captivate and dazzle. We wanted to know if one song could sum up their process. Some musicians spoke of childhood influence, some revealed studio stunts, and some didn’t understand the question. An edited transcript follows. continues on page 12

SUSANNA ROSE

KATIE PRESTON

DAN EATON

Don’t let that pretty smile fool you, Susanna Rose is romantically dark, and in some spots, downright bleak. Her lovely voice fills the sanctuary with tales of loneliness and want over a delicate bed of finger-picked notes and patterns. Her most recent album, 2015’s “Snowbound,” is a beautiful and haunting dash of melancholy. She is currently working on her second project. For more on Rose, check out susannarose.com.

Pleistocene plays some extremely quirky yet instantly alluring indie rock. The music is composed in relative safety and warmth under a blanket where the band’s leader Katie Preston likes to work. The sound is light-hearted and fun despite the lyrical irony that comes out. Pleistocene rocks in the face of its beguiling innocence and playfulness. For more on Preston and Pleistocene, go to pleistoceneband.bandcamp.com.

You could say “Dan Eaton and Crazy Horse” and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Eaton takes on the role of hardcore troubadour with hints of vulnerability and resolve. Whether fronting The Dan Eaton Band or as a solo artist (he has released one album as each), his voice is always at the forefront, reedy and raw. His sound is more than the country blues he calls to mind: it is world weary and beautiful in its denim and wood mortality and entropy. For more on Eaton, go to facebook.com/daneatonband.

CITY: What is a song? Susanna Rose: A song is what comes out when you start singing.

CITY: What is a song? Katie Preston: To me, a song is a compact way of relating ideas.

Where do you get a song?

I love the quote by Buddhist monk Pema Chodron, “Everything is the path.” I think this applies to songwriting. Everything you’ve ever experienced, everything you’ve ever heard, can turn up in something you’re creating. How do you use a song?

I use songs to help myself feel better when I’m not feeling great. Turning suffering into poetry makes it bearable. I also use songs to connect with other people.

Whether those ideas are simple, complicated, off-the-wall, or grounded in reality, a song is an interpretation in the form of a present, just waiting to be opened.

CITY: What is a song? Dan Eaton: Generally, I think a song is a reflection of the

human condition.

How do you get a song? How do you get a song?

I get a song by sitting very quietly, preferably under a blanket. First, the melody permeates through the blanket and into my ears, accompanied by incoherent babble from my mouth. The chords come next but usually don’t stick. The melody takes a long time choosing its chords. Once the melody has chosen, the mood has been set, and I put on the finishing touches on the song by turning the incoherent babble into lyrics.

I tend to get a song by getting out of the way and channeling the moment. Sometimes it’s born of a melody; sometimes a turn of phrase. Where do you get a song?

Love gives me a lot of songs. But also: spirituality, sadness, happiness, hope, fatherhood, nature, the sun rising and setting every day.

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

This is the weirdest thing, but in second grade, I was obsessed with an album by a new age, Norwegian artist named Cecilia, called “Voice of the Feminine Spirit.” This is somewhat embarrassing to admit.

Where do you get a song?

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

The melody is picked up on the bottom of my shoes from wherever I’ve been that day. The melodies beget the chords which beget the lyrics.

The Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young album “Déjà vu.” Song: “Almost Cut My Hair.” “I almost cut my hair the other day. It was getting kind of long. But I didn’t and I wonder why. I feel like letting my freak flag fly.”

What about it still resonates with you?

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

While I don’t have the same enthusiasm as 8-year-old Susanna, what still resonates is her beautiful voice and the haunting melodies. What no longer resonates are some of the lyrics and production choices.

This is stupid, but I remember that the first song I ever really liked was this song called “Hot Lunch.” I found out much later in life that it’s from the musical “Fame.” As a kid, I was in a dance recital and that was our song. I wasn’t a great dancer, but that song got me so riled-up that it didn’t matter.

What is your favorite record that you’ve recorded?

My favorite record of mine is the one I’m going to record this summer and release next fall. But in the meantime, my favorite is “Snowbound,” which I released November 2015. What are the similar elements of your first favorite and the one you wrote?

Similarities might be a haunting atmosphere and a pretty voice. I recognize similar themes, too. I enjoy writing songs about broken hearts, but I also write about existential angst, feeling disconnected from nature, the struggle to be true to yourself. “Voice of the Feminine Spirit” by Cecilia addressed similar questions, though in a very different way. What about it still resonates with you?

My taste has changed quite a bit, but 9-year-old me wasn’t completely off base. It’s not a bad song. The part that still resonates with me is its playfulness mixed with its strange sincerity. Those are two elements I always strive for when writing a song. What is your favorite record of yours?

My all-time favorite record is “Blood on the Tracks” by Bob Dylan. I heard it for the first time in high school and have been on this side of the tracks ever since. He makes personal crisis sound so majestic, without melodrama or lack of certainty. He makes pain listenable, and might I say, he does it with playfulness and sincerity. PHOTO BY AARON WINTERS

What about it still resonates with you?

I still feel like letting my freak flag fly. Have you ever referenced it directly or indirectly?

The whole album and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in general (especially Neil) have been an underlying reference to me my entire songwriting life. What is your favorite record that you’ve recorded?

Time to be diplomatic here. My first record was recorded with my band over the course of about two years. I love it. It’s a great reflection of the talent and musicianship that I am beyond fortunate to have in my band. Lots of collaboration and deep focus. My second record was recorded in five days in Austin, Texas, with a friend I met through my band, plus two other studio musicians I had never played with before — totally different experience, super organic. JULIA NUNES

MdotCoop raps with a powerful punch of authority that mimics jazz in its freestyle. Although Coop is ensconced in hip-hop’s lexicon, he is able to take a step back and stand alone. Lyrically, Coop runs deep with his quick tongue and wit, and he has lent his positive rhythm and rhymes to various people and projects like AudioInFlux and DJ Tim Tones. Coop recently released the EP “Finally, I Can Vibe.” For more go to mdotcoop.com. CITY: What is a song? MdotCoop: A song is a marriage of sounds, rhythms, harmonies,

Chris “Hollywood” English occupies at least two thrones: as a drummer and a singer so full of soul you’d swear he was levitating. But the cat is laid back in his humble, funky nonchalance and utter Frigidaire cool. English has shown his chops as singer and drummer for AudioInFlux and as drummer (briefly) for Plattsburgh jammers Lucid. His most recent band, The English Project, is in the studio now. He also keeps busy hosting a plethora of open jams; further ensconcing himself in all music. Check him out at facebook. com/theenglishprojectfunk.

Julia Nunes has come so far from the imp with the ukulele we fell in love with on YouTube without losing sight of the mirth intertwined throughout her songs. Primarily an acoustic artist in the indie realm with four albums to her credit, Nunes has played Bonnaroo and shared the stage with Ben Folds. She continues to crisscross the map, bringing joy to all the boys and girls who dig her insight and acerbic wit. For more on Nunes go to julianunes.com.

or words arranged rhythmically, or not.

For me, songs come from my experiences, my ancestry, my environment. It’s important for me to have a tangible connection to a tune.

CITY: How do you get a song? Julia Nunes: I have to figure out how I feel, and then say it

How do you get a song?

From your mind, body, and soul.

Where do you get a song?

How do you use a song?

Where do you get a song?

A song can be used for anything; history proves that. Songs have the ability to spark a revolution, start a war, relate an experience, divide people or bring them together. Songs can paint a picture as vivid as any painting.

By watching, humming, learning from others, and making it your own.

From the parts of my mind that aren’t so afraid of acknowledging what I want, who I want, what happened, why, and most importantly, how I feel about it. I think they come when your mind can wander and then come back to you.

How do you use a song?

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

You can use a song in many different ways: spiritually, mentally, and creatively.

Consulted my parents. I knew it’d be a Beatles song, but I’m glad I checked because I forgot how viscerally I identified with “I’m Only Sleeping.”

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

The Gap Band “Outstanding.”

What is your first favorite record, song, or portion of a song?

What do you remember the most about it?

The way the bridge culminates and brings it all together, the synth, the congas, the harmonies; there is so much synergy. That record impacted me long before I ever knew who or what it was.

Donny Hathaway’s “Live” album. Favorite song is “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye.

What about it still resonates with you?

The meaning of his lyrics.

I was not into responsibilities — still not. In re-listening, it still feels relevant. Sometimes I feel like the world is so full of stress and worry, and I wish people could relax. The only difference now is that I better understand why people cannot.

What about it still resonates with you?

Have you ever referenced it directly or indirectly?

The soulfulness of the tunes and the deep grooves.

On my last record there’s a lyric, “I wake up alone. I wanna get stoned and stare at a screen.” It’s maybe a much more painful angle on the same theme. The song is called “Fondly Enough.”

What do you remember the most about it?

Have you ever referenced it directly or indirectly?

I actually took the liberty of recording a freestyle over it recently. It was something I always wanted to do. That tune is just another predecessor to what would become hip-hop. What is your favorite record that you’ve recorded?

Most recently, I would say “Spread Love” off my “Finally, I Can Vibe” EP. It’s a tune about pursuing passion, bypassing negativity, embracing positivity and going for it wholeheartedly. What are the similar elements of your first favorite and the one you wrote?

It’s like all the songs I came up on, all the great music that has reverberated with me over the years. At any given moment it could give me inspiration, perspective on approach to a song, or just bring me back to a time in my life that will influence the writing of a song.

What is your favorite record that you’ve recorded?

Audiolnflux “Here Comes the Audio” and The English Project “Volume 1.” It comes out next month. What are the similar elements of your first favorite and the one you wrote?

The real live soul sounds, deep grooves, and the meaning of the songs.

What is your favorite record that you’ve recorded?

The next one. I’m recording this year; comes out January 3. What are the similar elements of your first favorite and the one you wrote?

I just demoed a new song, “Leave Me Alone,” which echoes the general feeling of “I’m Only Sleeping,” just wishing people would get off my back. “Revolver” has a healthy mix of philosophy, sadness, celebration, and story-telling which is what I aspire to do. Also, harmonies. PROVIDED PHOTO

in the classical repertoire than Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion.” An unparalleled example of Bach’s genius, it features the composer’s quintessential sense of symmetry, rhythmic synchronicity, and glorious harmonic tension. Musically, it’s more than the blues; somewhere between roots and lyrical oblivion, even though that blues tag sticks. It’ll get to you. “Bach to the Future” SUNDAY, MARCH 26 HOCHSTEIN PERFORMANCE HALL, 50 NORTH PLYMOUTH AVENUE 4 P.M. | $35 | 624-1301; CHAMBERMUSICROCHESTER.ORG [ CLASSICAL ] Bach would have been 232 years old on March

21, 2017, but musically he’s as young as ever. This Sunday, the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester proves the point by rounding up a list of notable players for a different kind of Bach birthday tribute. Most of the music on the program is indeed Bach’s, but you’ll hear it in arrangements credited to some notable composers — Gounod, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn — as well as the violinist Dmitri Sitkovetski’s arrangement for string trio of several of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” The concert winds up with some jazzy pseudobaroque in the form of Claude Bolling’s “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio.” — BY DAVID RAYMOND

Bob Holz and A Vision Forward.

Rochester emcee Golden is impressively armored with lethal lyrical dexterity and an upbeat, freeflowing delivery. “F*CK Ya Feelings,” Golden’s latest release, is a product of an artist’s vision made without the normal calculated process; this is more of an impulsive, uninhibited creation. After finding some unused beats, “I decided to stay up all night and just write,” she says. “About 10 hours later, I had about 75 percent of ‘F*CK Ya Feelings’ written. Instead of going to sleep, I went to the studio and recorded about 5 tracks, and within 2 weeks I was about 90 percent done.” This project is an underground album that mainstream hip-hop needs in 2017. Tracks like “Bass Drop (featuring Sun.N.Y)” and “Hustle (featuring Volatile)” are New York club-bangers with grandiose gangsta rap sediments; the production is nostalgic and hard-hitting. The sound is straight out of the renaissance of 1990’s East Coast hip-hop with a fierce female attitude. You can definitely pinpoint the influences in her rhymes — especially Jay-Z and Nas — it’s flashy, it’s playfully aggressive, and it’s undeniably authentic. It’s hard to believe “F*CK Ya Feelings” hasn’t surfaced past Rochester yet, but this focused emcee has a lot ahead of her. — BY AMANDA FINTAK

Here’s the perfect soundtrack to those skate park blooper reels where a kid wipes out on a halfpipe and breaks everything when he eventually lands. Or maybe a NASCAR race with opposing traffic. Instrumental power house Bailey Mason Lickers — or BML — has arrived with these two descriptive scenarios covered on its new CD, “Taphonomy.” This record is f***ing brutal, played with Hammer of the Gods power and ballerina grace. But dainty, they ain’t. It’s borderline math metal, but you won’t need an abacus to bang your head here. Everyone in this trio is a player’s player when it comes to his instrument. Drummer Ronnie Lickers keeps it high and tight with a rudimentary minimalist kit, while bassist Toby Bailey and guitarist Brian Mason duke it out in the sky. Lickers also adds the vocal prompts on the last track, “Funkonomy.” You’ll need a back brace and a mouth guard for this 9-song thrill ride, junior. Joe Fiedler never meant to play the trombone, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the most in-demand players on the New York scene. Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1960’s and 70’s, his home life wasn’t particularly musical. His father mostly listened to singers like Roger Miller, but Fiedler’s ears perked up when his dad played records like The Cannonball Adderley Sextet’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and Oscar Peterson’s “Night Train.” As a child, he admired two cousins who played trumpet, so he decided to follow in their footsteps. Fiedler had buckteeth, though, and he couldn’t get a buzz out of a trumpet mouthpiece. When his fourth grade music teacher gave him a trombone mouthpiece, he got the buzz and he was given the instrument. “I was just so shy that I sadly took the trombone home and thought I’ll stick with this,” says Fiedler, who brings his quintet to the Bop Shop on Thursday, March 30. Fiedler played through high school, but he put the trombone aside while majoring in

computer science at Allegheny College. When that didn’t prove satisfying, he returned home and became a math major at University of Pittsburgh. At a party there he ran into an old friend, a sax player, who told him the college jazz band needed trombones. “I said I hadn’t practiced in a couple of years,” Fiedler says. “But he convinced me. Once the door cracked open a bit, that was it; I started practicing day and night.” After college, he hung around Pittsburgh for several years playing whatever gigs he could find. One day his mentor, Randy Purcell, who had been in Maynard Ferguson’s band in the 1970’s, hooked him up with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Touring with the Miller band led to gigs with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra where he met band members like Ted Nash, Ryan Kisor, and Joe Temperley. “They were mature, monster players,” Fiedler says. “There was much more to learn there.” Fiedler moved to New York City in 1993. “It

was during the explosion of the Knitting Factory scene,” he says. “David Murray was still in town and Ray Anderson; these guys were my heroes from records. I’d go talk to them and it blew me away.” Over the years, Fiedler has made most of his living by playing music where trombone is king: salsa and Latin jazz. He toured with Celia Cruz and still plays with the legendary Eddie Palmieri. “It’s a dream come true,” Fiedler says. “He

plays a lot of his old hits. It’s kind of surreal sometimes when you step back and think, ‘I’m playing with Eddie.’ He demands so much. You gotta get in there and bring it so hard. He’s 80 years old, and he expects you to be playing your ass off. “We played Lincoln Center last weekend and the hair on your neck is standing up. It’s so exciting, and the players are so committed. There’s such a reverence for Eddie. The great Barry Rogers was the grandfather of Latin trombone, playing from the 1960’s with Eddie’s first band. I sit with Eddie and pick his brain about Barry, ‘Who came up with this lick? Who wrote this chart?’” Fiedler also played in the pit band for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway show, “In the Heights.” “I wasn’t trying to get into Broadway,” Fiedler says. “In a lot of shows the parts are so lame, you lose your chops if you’re not challenged. But they wrote very demanding parts for me, so it was a good situation.” Fiedler’s day job for the last seven years has been music director — arranger, orchestrator, and trombonist — for “Sesame Street.” He’s written more than 250 arrangements and composed more than 5,000 underscoring cues. “It’s kind of a golden opportunity to try things out on a weekly basis,” says Fiedler. “A lot of it is what’s on my mind. If I happen to be listening to some classical thing in the car, maybe I’ll use that combination of instruments on ‘Sesame Street.’” Is there any character who he particularly enjoys writing for? “Grover to me is the most hilarious puppet, and his body language opens itself up for cartoony, shticky, funny music, like muted trombone. It’s easy to write for him because you’re just giggling watching him.” Fiedler, who has played on more than 100 records, leads several bands of his own. In the late-80’s he formed Big Sackbut, a quartet with three trombones and a tuba. “One of my all-time favorite groups was The World Saxophone Quartet. I always wanted to do a trombones version of that.” His latest album, “Like, Strange,” is a decidedly funky affair featuring his new quintet: Jeff Lederer on saxophones; Pete McCann, guitar; Rob Jost, bass; and Michael Sarin, drums. All of them will join Fiedler at the Bop Shop. “My earlier records came from an avantgarde perspective, which I loved,” Fiedler says, “but as I keep maturing I’ve always wanted to do music that was more tune-based, having the improvisations flow from be-bop language. But also have it be more accessible.”

JAZZ | THE HOT SARDINES

She was a travel writer educated at the London School of Economics and he was a New York actor. But when Elizabeth Bougerol met Evan Palazzo at a jam session in 2007, they bonded over their love of Fats Waller. Turns out Bougerol could sing like a sultry 1940’s diva and Palazzo could lead a band that swings like there’s no tomorrow. Together they formed The Hot Sardines, with a combination of great vocals, honky-tonk piano, tight brass arrangements and tap dance percussion. Over the last several years the group has wowed audiences at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and concert halls here and abroad. The Hot Sardines will play with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Jeff Tyzik) on Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25, at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs Street. 8 p.m. both nights. $40-$104. 454-2100; rpo.org; hotsardines.com. — BY RON NETSKY

“Sketching the Soul” is currently being staged at MuCCC and will continue this weekend. PHOTO BY ANNETTE DRAGON

Work in progress “Sketching the Soul” PRESENTED BY HUMMINGBIRD THEATER CO. REVIEWED FRIDAY, MARCH 17 CONTINUES THURSDAY, MARCH 23, THROUGH SATURDAY, MARCH 25 MUCCC, 142 ATLANTIC AVENUE 7:30 P.M. | $12 ADVANCE; $15 DOOR | MUCCC.ORG [ REVIEW ] BY LEAH STACY

The existence of MuCCC, a church-turnedarts venue, enables many small performance groups with a script and a dream to produce theatrical works. And while it’s important to support and encourage this kind of community theater, it’s equally as important for the troupes to reward audience members with a quality night out — especially if there’s a charge for the show. Through March 25, hummingbird theater co. — formerly BART Productions — is staging “Sketching the Soul,” a 1989 play by Jacqueline Lynch. The show is directed by Don Bartalo, one of MuCCC’s 2017 artistsin-residence and the current president of the Penfield Players. It’s the story of Chelsea Logan (played by Sara Penner), a young painter who’s just caught her first big break.

As the show begins, she’s returning home to New York City from a successful gallery showing in San Francisco. That’s when her past literally comes knocking. Logan grew up Amish, and when her sister, Sarah Richter (Laura Thompson Pratt), shows up at her door in full Amish dress, her past is no longer a secret to her boyfriend, lawyer Mike Grimaldi (Brian Tan), and her friend and neighbor, Nancy (Stephanie Sheak). Add to that an interview with pushy magazine journalist Maureen Nash (Denise Bartalo), and Logan begins to question everything she once thought she wanted. When there is a relatively small cast, a few things can happen. It’s true the players may have more opportunity to shine both individually and as an ensemble; but it’s also true that just one weak cast member can easily dilute the ensemble. “Sketching the Soul” has a little of both. In general, the biggest issue is the tone throughout the play. Penner keeps a frenetic pace that doesn’t allow for the power of Lynch’s well-written dialogue to take hold and affect the audience. The level Penner sustains in both vocal inflection and tension elevates each scene to a level of stress that is hard to understand, and it’s established right at the beginning of the show. (Even during

intermission, audience members whispered back and forth about their confusion as to why Penner and Tan’s characters were at odds as soon as the play began.) There was no established relationship, no context to help the audience understand where the stress was coming from. Arguably, this could be less the fault of the actors and more a misstep in the direction of the show — but as a result, any sort of romantic relationship between the two characters is hard to believe. When Nancy enters, it’s a welcome break from the one note scene between Tan and Penner. Sheak is clearly an experienced actor, and one who has a significant stage presence. Her character’s attitude and Long Island accent add depth to each scene (as well as comic relief); she’s a “three-dimensional character” when most of the others seem to be playing caricatures. Another commendable cast member is Pratt as Logan’s meek Amish sister Sarah. Thompson never seems as though being onstage unsettles her, rather, she’s fully in character the whole time: watching her fellow cast members, responding to them, and giving them emotion to play off in return. Perhaps for this reason, Penner and Tan’s individual scenes with Thompson are their best in the show. As Maureen Nash, Denise Bartalo pleasingly plays the reporter, but Joseph Barcia’s portrayal of photographer Arthur Coakley is overplayed to distraction. “Sketching the Soul” is set in 1989, so it’s to be assumed that the decor is questionable, and the set reflected that. The most confusing part of the show’s aesthetic was a projected slideshow of paintings that looped on a screen before the play began. Based on the accompanying watermarks, the collection appeared to be plucked right from a Google search of “Amish country paintings.” However, as a watermark represents a copyright, it would have been wise to obtain permission (and watermarkfree files) from the painters before including their work in the production. There was another odd addition at the top of the show and again right after intermission when singer Mary Wojciechowski — who didn’t appear in the rest of the play — entered in a long, white Grecian dress and sang an a cappella gospel tune. The symbolism was muddling, but Wojciechowski does have a lovely voice. While last week’s brutal weather almost certainly had an impact on rehearsals leading up to “Sketching the Soul,” it feels as though the director and some of the cast could have used more time to get to know the characters they were playing. Perhaps by the second weekend, that will be resolved. rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 19

He sees the lady seeing others: “She says her new client’s name. It drops like a gem from her mouth. She has no idea how precious it sounds.” Throughout the book, Denfeld slowly parses the pasts and inner worlds of her characters, including the narrator, a handful of other condemned men, the kindly warden, a fallen priest haunted by his own decisions, and the lady’s demons. On the surface, the lady is strong, kind, honest, and apparently whole. Her depth of understanding is rooted in looking unflinchingly and with compassion, and the world’s secrets open to her. But Denfeld has also given the lady an obsession with the dark: “The look in her eyes is of a person who drank from the end of a gun barrel and found it delicious.” Both the lady’s talent for seeing into the men and her deep and hungry glances into the abyss come from sharing the inmates’ background of poverty, neglect, and abuse. Bright light [ REVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW

The George Eastman Museum this week is celebrating legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, and on Saturday will present him the George Eastman Award, the museum’s highest honor, for his distinguished contributions to the art of film. The three-time Academy Award winner will be in town this weekend to introduce screenings of “Apocalypse Now Redux” on Friday, and “Dick Tracy” on Saturday (before the award presentation ceremony). On Sunday, Storaro will introduce a free screening of “Muhammad: The Messenger of God.” The Dryden will continue showing selections from Storaro’s five decade career — including “The Last Emperor,” “Last Tango in Paris,” and “Little Buddha” — through the end of April. A complete film schedule and ticket information is available at eastman.org/storaro or by calling 530-3367.

CITY: You describe the art of cinematography as “writing with light.” Can you talk a bit about what you mean by that? Vittorio Storaro: First we need to make

a distinction between photography and cinematography. Photography comes from the Greek language: “photo” or “light” and “graphé” or “writing.” Photography is expressing ourselves in one single image. Cinematography is an evolution from that word, meaning several images in movement. There are multiple images moving in a specific rhythm. It’s much more like writing an idea than painting. That’s why I like to express what I’m doing as “writing with light.” Because it needs to express a complete concept from the beginning, through an evolution, and George Eastman Award recipient Vittorio Storaro on location for “Muhammad: The an end. Messenger of God.” PHOTO PROVIDED

Storaro, from his home in Italy, gave CITY a little bit of time to discuss his impressive career, his choice for the most important tool in any cinematographer’s arsenal, and the future of motion picture photography. An edited transcript of that conversation follows. For a few more questions that couldn’t make it into print due to space, check out this interview online at rochestercitynewspaper.com.

You’ve worked with a number of directors on more than one film, most notably your many collaborations with Bernardo Bertolucci. How does your working relationship with a director change over that kind of time?

It becomes a kind of journey. With Bernardo, we have a very special relationship, because we are thinking in the same direction. Same with Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, Carlos Saura. It’s also the same thing with Woody Allen. Where you feel that you are going in the same direction of discovery. The first time Francis Coppola called me for “Apocalypse Now,” he didn’t speak Italian, and my English was much more coarse than it is now, but we were speaking the same language of cinema. The films you’ve worked on are often noted for their distinct use of color. What is it about color that makes it such an important tool in your storytelling?

It’s one of the most important things that today’s cinematographers should keep in mind. We had 50 to 60 years of cinema that were all in black-and-white. Practically a whole generation began seeing cinema in black-and-white. When color came out — in Technicolor and through Eastman Kodak — people thought that maybe color would not be compatible. Photography is made through the relationship — in harmony or conflict — between light and shadow. Leonardo da Vinci said that colors are the children of light and shadow. Isaac Newton showed that white light can be opened with a prism, and you can see what is inside; the seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Only

when you put all those colors back together can you create white light, which is a fantastic concept. In a sense, that light is visible energy. Energy we can feel with our entire body. Our blood pressure, our metabolism changes if we are backed by strong light or we are in shadow. Today not many cinematographers know about the expression and energy color can provide when you see it. Don’t be afraid to use color. Colors are not the enemy; they are friends. “Café Society” was both your and director Woody Allen’s first film shot digitally. What led to that decision?

I shot for Woody Allen on set with a big monitor which showed exactly what we are doing, exactly what the movie will look like. So we had the chance to make corrections. The technology has made an incredible advancement; you can achieve a very good image that’s very close to the one we get with film. Cinema is in progress, always. No doubt cinema is not finished yet, and I’m sure it will continue to evolve. But the most important thing is that we not forget that past, and to always keep in mind what we learned from the past and the present in order to go forward into the future. And to preserve that history. Any painter, any sculptor is always thinking how to make their work, their creativity, last as long as possible. That’s one of the most important issues. The Eastman Kodak company — not just the museum but the company — has the chance to do it. They have the resources and the research to push the ideas of George Eastman. Not only creating an element like film which can record an image, but can preserve that image for future generations.

Perhaps there are parents who (according to the Cinepolis movie chain) long to watch movies in theaters while their children (aged 3 and up) frolic in front in a “jungle-gym” playground inside the same auditorium. If so, the company’s two “junior” movie houses (opening this very week in San Diego and Los Angeles) may bring a new dimension to “family entertainment.” Another view, though, is that the noise (often “screaming”), plus the overhead lighting required for parents to monitor their tykes’ equipment-usage, plus the planned $3-per-ticket surcharge, will soon create (according to the Guardian critic) a moviegoing “apocalypse.”

Can’t Possibly Be True

(1) The US Patent and Trademark Office in January granted IBM’s 2010 application for a patent on “out-of-office” email message software (even though such messages have, of course, been ubiquitous for two decades) after the company finally convinced examiners that its patent had enough software tweaks on it to qualify. (Critics, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, laughed at the uselessness of the tweaks.) (2) Also in January, the office granted Daniel Dopps a patent for “adhesive vaginal lipstick,” which his Mensez Technologies claims can cause the labia minora to tighten so strongly as to retain menstrual fluid until the woman can deal with buildup in privacy.

News of the Pretentious

Why live with a cat if one cannot take it out for some wine together? The Apollo Peak in Denver and the Pet Winery in Fort Myers, Florida, serve a variety of the real grape to humans and nonalcoholic proprietary drinks for the kitties to enjoy tableside (or underneath). “Pinot Meow” ($12) in Denver and “Meow and Chandon” ($15) in Fort Myers, are specialties — basically watered catnip, according to a February New York Times report (so the felines can also get buzzed). The wine outing is the human’s preference, of course, with a loftier cachet than the “happy hour” most cats might prefer (say, a “sardine bar”). “I tried the $5,000 hamburger, and it was absolutely worth it,” wrote the apparently straight-faced CNBC reviewer Robert Frank in February, describing his meal at the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay restaurant Fleur. (The burger included Waygu beef, foie gras and truffles, and was served with a similarly inexplicably priced wine.) Other recent consumer challenges: an $18 cup of coffee at Brooklyn’s Extraction Lab; a $100 bottle of Norwegian iceberg water (Svalbardi. com); a $2,000 pizza at New York City’s Industry Kitchen (caviar, truffles, gold flakes); and a $25,000 taco at the Grand Velas Los Cabos resort in Mexico (caviar, brie, Kobe beef, langoustine lobster, rare tequila — and once again with the gold flakes).

[ LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION ON PAGE 25 ] [ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): Try not to let your emotions take over, giving way to impulsive decisions that could lead to disappointment and regret when it comes to love and new relationships. Check the past of anyone you consider moving forward with. Love will be costly if you aren’t careful. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don’t divulge your feelings if it implicates someone you work with or for. Go through a dating service or ask one of your friends to set you up on a blind date. Go about your business, and do not sell yourself short when it comes to love relationships.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Trust issues will be prevalent when it comes to love and romance. Whether it’s you or the person you are with, you will have to keep the communication flowing to avoid a mishap that will stifle your chance to make your relationship work. Make a commitment and offer affection. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You’ll be attracted to trouble when it comes to love relationships. Don’t be blindsided by someone’s overt affection and smooth talk. Take it slow and protect your heart as well as your money and possessions from someone who may want more from you than you are willing to give.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Love and romance are highlighted, and making personal decisions and choices can easily lead to plans with someone you want as a forever partner. Don’t hold back; air your views and collaborate in order to come up with the best strategy to use moving forward. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Socializing, networking and educational pursuits will be your ticket to meeting someone you want to get to know better. Just be yourself, and don’t feel the urge to take on more responsibility than the person you are getting to know. Equality will lead to compatibility.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Control your emotions until you know exactly where you stand. An on-again-offagain situation should be a warning that trouble lies ahead. Let your friendship grow, and get the lowdown on your love interest’s past before you venture into a situation that could be emotionally draining. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): A unique approach to love will attract someone as experimental and interesting as you. Test the waters by making suggestions first, and you will soon find out who is a match and who is not. It’s best not to entertain getting involved in a secret affair — regardless of how tempting.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Your impatience will lead to a whirlwind relationship with someone as anxious as you to dive in and see what happens. Expect plenty of ups and downs as you find your way to common ground. Chemistry is a wonderful feeling, but it must be handled carefully. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You’ll face confusion and uncertainty when it comes to reading into how someone feels about you. Expect to be faced with someone who has ulterior motives and a questionable background. Don’t give in to pressure because you can’t resist temptation being

dangled in front of you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You’ll be good to go as soon as you find out if the object of your desires is free and clear of any ongoing attachment to someone else. Romantic opportunities will be plentiful, so don’t get hung up on someone who cannot fulfill your romantic dreams. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You’ll be difficult to resist and easy to please, making you a candidate for love and romance. It’s best to set some standards to avoid being with someone who is just OK when someone very special is watching and waiting for a chance to get to know you better.

A Sweet Home in Swillburg

137 Henrietta Street Swillburg is one of the city’s smallest neighborhoods, and also one that’s dense with livability. Its colorful history, easy-to-access location near the South Wedge and Highland Park, and mix of affordable restaurants are giving the neighborhood some of the fastest growing housing values in the area. Swillburg is anchored by two iconic Rochester businesses: the Cinema Theatre and the Highland Park Diner across the street. In business since 1914, the Cinema is one of the oldest continuously operated movie theaters in the United States. The neighborhood has evolved into a popular dining destination with American-style restaurants and ethnic dining choices that include Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Ethiopian. In the 19th century, Swillburg was home to pig farms that gave the neighborhood its amusing nickname. The pigs are gone now with immigrants from Ireland and Germany settling here by the beginning of the 20th century. The home at 137 Henrietta Street is an example of the homes they built – handsome and highly functional designs still in demand over 100 years later. Built in 1900, 137 Henrietta Street is a 1,015 square foot single-floor home with two bedrooms. It’s been carefully updated throughout to include an immaculate new bathroom, all new appliances in the kitchen, and warm refinished hardwood floors. The main entry to the living room is through the full-width front porch with plenty of space
