Seismic Retrofitting Mexico City’s informal housing

Informal Contruction techniques

In the recent September off 2017 earthquake in Mexico City, 228 people died and more than 1,800 homes were damaged, including at least seven that were newly built. Despite the government’s efforts to create stricter building codes and regulations, buildings continue to be constructed without inspection. According to the Mexican Society of Structural Engineers, in 1990 more than 70% of Mexico’s houses were made out of brick with reinforced concrete structure.

Earthquake Aftermath

These houses are homes to millions of people who risk displacement and even death every time an earthquake happens in their region. It is impractical for these people to completely reconstruct their homes. Their only hope is to salvage and improve what they already have through seismic retrofitting techniques. Retrofitting as we know it, however, is just as impractical. It requires large amounts of materials that are either expensive and inaccessible or counteractive to the desired structural behavior of a building in a seismic zone. The answer lies in alternative materials.
