Welcome to Huntingdon County!

I

s it possible to have an area that is peaceful and down to earth and yet still have the bustling sounds and actions of a busy city?

We think so! We see it every day in Huntingdon County!

Huntingdon is located in Southcentral Pennsylvania, among ridges of the Appalachian Mountains.Visitors quickly discover why the area is nicknamed “Land of 1,000 Hills,” as the area is laced by forested ridges and agricultural valleys.

The Huntingdon Area comprises approximately 100 square miles of the county’s 895 square miles.

Approximately 72 percent of the county is forested, 22 percent agricultural, and 4 percent developed, according to the Huntingdon County Planning Commission.

The unpolluted waters of the Juniata and its tributaries provide an excellent fishery of trout, bass, and other species and a dependable supply of water for domestic and industrial use.

While Huntingdon enjoys four seasons, the seasonal climate rarely goes to the extremes.

The average summer high temperature is 82 degrees, and the average low, 59. In winter, the high temperature averages 39, and the low, 21.

Approximately 37 inches of rain and 33 inches of snow fall per year. Accumulations of snow usually melt between one snowfall and the next.

Bonney Forge is one of the top employers in Huntingdon County and is an industry leader in marketing and manufacturing forged steel fittings and unions, branch connections, forged steel valves, cast steel valves, and specialty products.

untingdon County, located in the Allegheny Mountain Range, is a place of quiet towns, picturesque covered bridges, and historic sites dating back to the time when these lands were the final frontier of America. For those who love the outdoors, there’s a place just waiting to be explored.

During the past decade, Huntingdon’s economy has changed and is becoming increasingly self-sufficient and is now providing local residents and visitors greater options in retail, professional services, and health care. Though manufacturing is a smaller cluster than in the past, Huntingdon County still has a strong manufacturing presence. Tourism and recreation continue to be growth areas for Huntingdon county as well as the county is home to some of the best fishing streams in the East, countless miles of hiking trails, rushing whitewater rivers, peaceful lakes, and the countryside Bicycling Magazine named one of the “five top bicycle areas in the nation.”

Huntingdon County is home to several industrial and commercial development sites, including Riverview Business Center, Huntingdon Industrial Park, Smithfield Town Center, and more. Huntingdon County’s economic-development partners work to further site development in not only these parks but also in each of our historic downtown sites as well.

The county also has a rich history in entrepreneurship and product development, including the origination of the first paper tablet. Entrepreneurship continues to be a growth cluster served by many of the county’s economic partners and through Juniata College Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, located in the Sill Business Incubator. The county also is home to many educational institutions, including Juniata College, Dubois Business Center, Penn Highlands Community College, and the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center. n

untingdon County is fortunate to have an independent, nonprofit, community hospital located on “Hospital Hill,” overlooking the community of Huntingdon. J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital (www.jcblair.org), a gift to the community from the widow of a local industrialist, has served generations of families since the first patient was admitted more than 100 years ago.

The hospital has continually expanded its physical plant, invested in new equipment, and modified its services to provide personal, professional care to area residents and visitors. The 100-bed hospital has kept pace with technological advances, offering digital mammography and stereotactic breast biopsies; laser surgery and laparoscopy; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); hyperbaric oxygen therapy; and accredited cardiac services. The emergency department is staffed by physicians and nurses around the clock. The hospital’s maternity unit provides private, homelike rooms where patients can stay for all stages of their care. The medical staff at the hospital includes approximately 40 physicians, whose specialties include family practice, orthopedics, internal medicine, 1 4 - 2012-2013 Community Profile and Membership Directory

radiology, urology, emergency medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, podiatry, anesthesiology, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, gastroenterology, cardiology, and pathology. The hospital directs the ongoing recruitment of top physicians to Huntingdon County. Eighty percent of the hospital’s medical staff is board certified in their respective specialties.

The goal of the medical staff, the more than 400 employees, and 40 active volunteers is to offer the best possible patient experience.

In addition to primary care physician offices in Huntingdon, the county also has five regional medical centers that provide primary care for many local residents: • Juniata Valley Medical Center, Alexandria • Mount Union Area Medical Center, Mount Union • Southern Huntingdon County Medical Center, Orbisonia • Broad Top Medical Center, Broad Top City • Trough Creek Medical Care Center, Cassville Sick or injured people unable to reach a medical facility can rely on swift professional care and transport from any of the county’s volunteer ambulance services. Paramedics, working under the guidance of a hospital physician, supplement the ambulance crews at Alexandria, Huntingdon, and Robertsdale. n

untingdon County has four school districts that serve K though 12. Huntingdon Area School District, Juniata Valley School District, Mount Union School District, and Southern Huntingdon County School District strive to better prepare the leaders of tomorrow. Huntingdon County also is home to the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center that prepares individuals for vocational careers.

Huntingdon County students can attend many options for higher education nearby such as Juniata College. Business and technical schools such as DuBois Business College, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, and South Hills School of Business and Technology also provide options for a well-educated workforce for the area. All of these opportunities prepare students for the future and to create a bright future for the county. n

Events The Annual Awards Gala allows the Chamber to honor seven businesses and individuals for their accomplishments during that year. It features the ATHENA Award, David K. Goodman Jr. Community Service Award, Customer Service Award, Volunteer of the Year Award, Educator of the Year Award, Entrepreneurial Success Award, and Business of the Year Award.

Annual Chamber Open Golf Tournament is a day of networking for serious and not-so-serious golfers. The event, which is held every June, offers a day of fun and business opportunity.

Programs

Huntingdon County Home and Outdoor Show is a joint effort between the Chamber and the Huntingdon County Builders Association. The show brings together local businesses that focus on improvements to the home along with outdoor improvements and recreation. The show is held in May at the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds.

Annual “State of the Chamber” Luncheon provides an opportunity for the membership to hear from each of the Chamber’s standing committees. During the event, attendees hear about the previous year’s successes and the future goals of each committee and the Chamber as a whole.

The Winter Blues event creates a break in the cold winter months by providing a Taste of Huntingdon County and entertainment from a local blues band. During this event, attendees can also help local nonprofit organizations during a raffle event. n

Coffee Connections is a quarterly opportunity to welcome new members to the Chamber, network, and enjoy a guest speaker or speakers discussing topics that are pertinent to Huntingdon County.

Educational Seminars are monthly opportunities for the members to gain knowledge on an array of topics that can help with their business or career. Topics can range from social media to human-resource law.

BASICS is an acronym for Businesses and Schools Investing In Cooperative Solutions. This nationally recognized program brings the businesses and education communities together on issues that affect young people, particularly as they relate to career exploration.

Business After Hours is a monthly event that is held to create a premium networking event for Chamber members. Chamber members host each month’s event at their business and create an informal setting for everyone.

Business Connection is a yearly event held to give members the opportunity to be either purchasers or sellers in a low-key

The class runs annually and is held monthly (September-May).

Youth Leadership Day Huntingdon County is designed for the development of the county’s youth from all local school districts. Committees Blues Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of our annual Winter Blues event. The committee deals with planning and marketing of the event.

Business Opportunities is responsible for developing promotional activities, business assistance, business retention, organizing annual awards programs, and developing programs that further business education and the provision of businessplanning services to area businesses.

Education Committee is responsible for the planning, development, and organization of educational opportunities to serve the member’s needs. In addition, the education committee is responsible for any education awards that the Chamber deems. The committee also may recommend to the board the development of community education programs on appropriate policy issues.

Golf Committee is responsible for the planning of the event by recruiting golfers and sponsors. The committee also is responsible for the execution of the event itself.

Government Affairs Committee is responsible for keeping members abreast of legislative initiatives and serves as a liaison between local Chamber members, the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry initiatives, and advocacy to address member’s needs. The committee will recommend positions on legislation to the board of directors, and recommend to

Huntingdon County Foundation The Huntingdon County Foundation is an independent foundation, established by the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce for the benefit of the Huntingdon County community. The Foundation’s initiatives include Leadership Huntingdon County and Youth Leadership Day. Some of the primary roles include providing tax-deductible opportunities to fund important community needs, establish permanent endowments to fulfill donors’ goals, and to offer simple ways for businesses and individuals to budget and guide annual contributions. n 2 8 - 2012-2013 Community Profile and Membership Directory

the appropriate committee, development of programs about legislation and political issues important to members. The committee works with other organizations and legislators to advocate for, and address, area project funding needs.

Huntingdon County Home and Outdoor Show Committee collaborates with the Huntingdon County Builders Association to plan the three-day event that is held yearly.

Main Street/Community Improvement Committee is responsible for advocating for the continued and enhanced role of traditional downtowns as well as advocate for improvement in the appearance of the Huntingdon County community.

Membership Committee is responsible for membership recruitment and membership services. It is the goal of this committee to offer various services to members, to coordinate membership functions (Business After Hours, Annual Meetings, Membership Luncheons, etc.), and to organize the Annual Membership Drive, including revising membership dues subject to board approval.

Technology Committee promotes the use of technology to expand business opportunities, improve the quality of life in Huntingdon County, improve communication among chamber members, and to implement the chamber strategic plan through the use of technology. n
