For those volunteering, round trip transportation will be provided from the downtown senior center to the event. Come have fun with us.

To the wonderful members of the Anaheim Senior Citizen’s Club:

It’s happening! We are growing! Finally we are starng to expand services across the city with the addion of new staff. I would like take a moment and explain some of the changes. You have probably seen some of them happening. Some of them have taken a year and a half to begin to occur.

First, we have begun to add services at Miraloma, Ponderosa Family Resource Center and West Anaheim Youth Center. This is in addion to programs and services we already offer at Brookhurst Community Center, Downtown Anaheim Community Center, and East Anaheim Community Center supplemented with acvies at the Downtown Anaheim Youth Center and the East Anaheim Gym. We are building opportunies for older adults to engage socially no maer where they live in the city. This is done with the staff taking the me to listen and make our older adults feel welcome.

Please take a look at the staff and their introducon memos by the Community Services Manager,JoePerezstarngonpage12.

TRAVEL NEWS

Future outings being planned are:

I have made reservations for a Christmas show and luncheon at the Long Beach Grand Hotel. As soon as I have all the information, I will post a flyer and start accepting payments if you wish to do so.

April 25th HARRAH’S CASINO in Valley Center (Funner) Rincon Reservation had a good turnout. Everyone had an enjoyable time and I think a lot of new friends were made.

The May 7th trip to Rockwell’s Café, Bakery and Bar was a delicious find. We had a large group for this trip, but I think being next to the Outlets San Clemente may have had a little to do with the higher interest level. We even played cornhole in the center of the mall. It was a beautiful day for a trip to the outside mall. Most people came back to the bus with at least one bag. Our bus driver was awesome and said she had a wonderful time.

The May 20th Back to Balboa trip has not taken place as of the writing of this article. I will update you next month on any shenanigans.

JUNE EXCURSIONS:

June 13th (Thurs) Dinner @ Beales Texas

BBQ in Huntington Beach

Member price will be $6.00, and you pay for your own meal. Reservation @ 4:30 p.m. We will leave the Senior Center at 3:00 p.m. and return at approximately 6:30 p.m.

June 25th (Tuesday) Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge

Member price will be $57.00 Price includes admission ticket and transportation. We will leave the Senior Center at 9:00 a.m. and return at approximately 3:30 p.m.

DEADLINE TO SIGN-UP IS: Thursday June 20th, 2024.

*PLEASE REMEMBER* If you have any kind of an issue getting home after dark, please let me know and we will plan to be sure you are able to attend all our functions. Do not worry, we will get you home safely regardless of the time.

I am also working on more beach days at different beaches while we have nice weather. Pirates Dinner Theater and Show. How about a daytime baseball game? Or a short train trip somewhere.

I am working on another trip to LAUGHLIN in October once the off-season rates begin, possibly the middle of October. I will let everyone know as soon as I can, so you can plan.

I am continually working on trips to fun and exciting places to visit. And of course, our lunch and dinner outings continue each month as promised, with casino trips every other month. If you have a favorite restaurant or place you would like to visit and think others would enjoy, please let me know and I will check it out. I am always looking for new places and suggestions.

Due to the continually rising costs of buses I am still concentrating on more local outings for a while so we can use the Senior Wheels program to help keep the costs down so more members are able to attend. Of course, our casino trips will continue with outside bus transportation if we can meet the minimums needed to cover the soaring prices.

Do not forget to keep checking my door for NEW flyers. You never know what we are going to produce!

As always, if you are here in the center, and I am in, feel free to stop by my office and say hello or give me new ideas you have thought of for our excursions. If for I am not in my office, PLEASE leave me a note with your phone number and ask the receptionist to please put it in my mailbox. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Have an awesome day, .

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 14

HavingASense Of Purpose May Help You Live Longer A SENSE OF PURPOSE, FEEL GOOD STORIES

A new study shows that living with purpose is linked to longevity among older adults across race, ethnicity, and gender.

A sense of purpose can drive healthy behavior and make a person more resilient to stress.

Prior research has shown that having a sense of purpose is associated with liv-ing longer.

A new study shows this association is true for older adults across race, ethnicity, and gender.

According to the findings, the link between a strong sense of purpose and longevity is also slightly more significant for women.

Agrowing body of evidence suggests that living with purpose may help you live longer.

Recently, researchers wondered whether this effect would apply equally across genders, ethnicities, and races.

This was the focus of a new study led by Dr. Koichiro Shiba, assistant professor at Boston University’s School of Public Health in Massachusetts.

According to the results, having a purpose lowers the risk of all causes of mortality, regardless of gender, race, or ethnicity, but the effects were more pronounced among women.

The study was recently published in Preventative Medicine.

Living longer and healthier with purpose

Previous research has found strong associations between having a sense of purpose in life and greater longevity.

For the present study, the researchers analyzed a diverse, large, and nationwide sample of older adults in the United States, looking for associations between a sense of purpose and mortality across gender, race, and ethnicity.

The data came from 13,159 adults over the age of 50 who had participated in the longitudinal Health and Retirement Study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging and the Social Security Administration. After an 8-year follow-up period, 3,253 of the participants, 24.7%, had died.

The analysis revealed that those with the strongest sense of purpose lowered their risk of death by 15.2% compared to people with the least sense of purpose. The results showed no significant differences in this association regardless of the participants’ race or ethnicity.

The findings also showed that purpose was more strongly associated with longevity in women than men, although it provided a significant benefit for both.

The researchers found that women lowered their risk of allcause mortality by 34%, compared to men, whose risk was reduced by 20%.

Feel Good Stories About Seniors

93-year-old asks for “more beer”

Forget toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Early on in the pandemic, Olive Veronesi, 93, held up a sign to let her family — and ultimately, the millions of people who saw her photo — know what she wanted: beer. In the adorable photo, the Seminole, Pennsylvania resident is holding a sign that says, “I need more beer.”

She tells KDKA in Pittsburgh, who posted the pic on their Facebook page, that she has a nightly beer, explaining, “I was on my last 12 cans, I have a beer every night, you know what, beer has vitamins in it, it’s good for you, as long as you don’t overdo it.” The station then reported that, shortly after, Molson Coors sent 150 beers her way — one of which she opened “right on the front porch.”

Matthew McConaughey plays bingo with seniors

Speaking of celebrities, back in April, actor Matthew McConaughey and his family played virtual bingo with a group of seniors from The Enclave at Round Rock Senior Living inAustin and made their day.

“Our team members can’t interact with the residents the way we normally do, so we have been doing everything possible to uplift them virtually,” Molly Davis Nedley, the sales director at the senior living facility tells CBS Austin. “This was a wish come true! The residents absolutely loved seeing Matthew and his family and enjoyed hearing him talk about what he’s doing to get through this crisis. It gave them hope and was the boost that they needed to get through this lonely, challenging time.”

Pizza delivery man gets $20K in donations

89-year old Derlin Newey is a pizza delivery man who received a surprise delivery of his own today.Acouple who got to know him from his pizza deliveries raised $12,000 to help him out. He had no idea. The full story ran on the nightly news.

Delivery people deserve all our praise this year. But a Utah family took that a step further by donating what ultimately amounted to $20,000 to their 89-year-old pizza delivery man, Derlin Newey, who spends about 30 hours a week working for Papa John’s Pizza, according to the Washington Post.

Gladys and Carlos Valdez posted videos of Newey’s deliveries to TikTok — and eventually decided to ask their followers for “tips” in his honor.

“He was just so friendly, really talkative, and just super sweet and genuine,” Gladys Valdez tells the newspaper. They filmed the sweet moment when they surprised Newey with the donation — which was just over $12,000 at the time — in, of course, a pizza box.

Want to Go See an Eclipse?

What happens when you say to a friend: "Yes I'll go to see and try to photograph a solar eclipse."

I was asked in December 2023 to see an eclipse in April 2024 by a friend who saw one, loved it and desired to see another but didn't want to go alone and asked me: "Would you like to see and photograph a solar Eclipse...in Texas? My first reaction was: "Sure!" Mentally however my thoughts were: "Gee, it's a long way from California and will involve costs for traveling." Hmmm, acting like a penny-pinching miser, buyer's remorse thoughts arose: “Did I say yes too quickly without factoring in the cost?"

The photography of an eclipse part was more like trying a fabulous new baking recipe for a big once in a lifetime party with no practice possible and failure 'was not an option'. Happily, Google the tech giant provides maps, and I knew exactly where to set the camera up. Astro-photographer's exposures gave a starting point for the dark totality portion of the solar eclipse. And yes, relief set in when I viewed the results on my camera.

Some trivia on total Solar Eclipses: Colors are surreal, crickets can be heard, animals go to bed and get confused when daylight returns so quickly. It's an overwhelming feeling unlike anything experienced in any person’s lifetime.
