Lewis defends removal of flag Bairbre Ni Bhraonain
THE removal of an Israeli flag that was flying in Dun Laoghaire as part of the recent European Optimist sailing championship has caused controversy. Cllr Hugh Lewis (PBP) scaled a ladder to remove the flag after he asked Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company to remove it in protest at the ongoing military incursion in Gaza. Cllr Patricia Stewart (FG) said Cllr
Lewis’s action does not help “a complex problem”. However, Cllr Lewis said he removed the flag after receiving dozens of calls by constituents who said they were “disgusted” that the flag was flying “at a time of much brutality”. A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy said: “The action by the councillor serves no purpose whatsoever except to show and incite hatred for Israel and its people.” Full Story on Page 5
