Countdown to village festival well under way Opening of Round Tower a highlight for third annual community event

THE Clondalkin Festival is set to return this year from June 28 to 30.

Now in its third year, the festival continues to go from strength to strength and this

year will feature three days of family entertainment throughout the village.

BusinessmanThyes Kavanagh is part of the organising committee and said that the countdown is now well and truly under way.

He said: “It’s going well and we’re into the countdown now. We’ve got the Round Tower open for two days this year after last year’s very popular couple of days.

“A lot of the traders have

really bought into the festival. Some people were a bit iffy when we started it, because there was nothing like this put on before, but everyone is now really behind it.”

Labour slam ‘political posturing’ on charge A WAR of words has erupted in South Dublin County Council over the property tax.

At the meeting of South Dublin County Council last week, Fianna Fail councillor Trevor Gilligan put down a motion asking for councillors to “oppose any increase in the property tax in 2014”.

Only one other councillor – Sinn Fein’s Cathal King – supported the motion, with Fine Gael and Labour councillors voting against it.

Cllr Gilligan said that this action was tantamount to councillors voting for an increase in the controversial tax.

He said: “I was disappointed that not a single Labour or Fine Gael councillor supported my motion.

“Whilst they promised to decrease the tax if re-

elected, not one of them supported my motion.

So, already, they are saying one thing, and doing another.

“There were the typical abstentions from the vote, so that they could sit on the fence and say to residents that they didn’t not support my motion,” said Cllr Gilligan.

However, Cllr Breeda Bonner (Lab) accused Gilligan of “political posturing”.

She said: “I wasn’t at the meeting, but I wouldn’t have supported the motion. I have already said that I will be vociferously looking for a

cut in the property tax.

“In South Dublin, we should do very well out of the tax, and it will be within our power to look for a reduction.

“Cllr Gilligan’s motion was defeated for a number of reasons. It is not the time for such a motion, it’s much too early, and it is only political posturing that prompted the motion.”

Cllr Emer Higgins (FG) said that no increase is being planned, but if the council can reduce the tax while protecting services, she will support that.

She said: “I am happy to confirm that no increase in the property tax is being planned by national government for 2014.

“I am opposed to a hike in this fee, as I feel families are already under enough pressure.

In 2015, the council will have the power to review the charge.

“If it is possible for our council to reduce this fee without affecting services, then that is something I would certainly support,” she said.

Cllr Bonner said that the motion was a “waste of council time”.

‘A waste of time’ “A lot of the time, these motions are put down and are a waste of the council’s time. We have no power over this issue this year, so it was just flag flying by Trevor [Gilligan].

“A lot of motions that are put down are for State issues or national issues, and it is a waste of our time. Why waste time with a motion that can get nothing done?

“It was not supported, because it was purely a

cynical party political ploy,” she said.

However, Cllr Gilligan said that any councillor who promised a cut to the property tax was engaging in “auction politics”.

“Promising to decrease the property tax if reelected to the council – this is the type of auction politics I and my party want to see removed from politics.

“We have had far too many promises broken by this government, and I’m afraid to say these promises are now being echoed again by the government councillors in South Dublin County Council.

“I would like to thank Mayor Cathal King, who was the only one to have the courage of his convictions and support this motion,” said Cllr Gilligan.

THE Clondalkin dog that sparked a national search was not mistreated before her death, an autopsy has revealed.

Julie Holmes, who is a dog trainer, last saw her terrier-cross puppy Clara on March 20, and offered a sizeable reward for the return of the brown and tan dog.

C l a r a ’s b o d y w a s found days after the initial Gazette story was printed, prompting outrage online as rumours

swirled of foul play and horrific treatment.

However, Julie this week contacted The Gazette to say that an official post mortem had found differently.

Julie added that despite offering a reward, nobody had tried to claim it. This, she says, means that any notion that a “ransom” had been refused was wrong.

She said: “I received the final post mortem report for Clara on Friday. In spite of very upsetting and misleading com-

ments made by others, it confirms that Clara did not suffer any mistreatment whatsoever prior to her tragic death.

“The cause of death was drowning, although it cannot be accurate as to how long she had been in the water for.

“When I went to identify her body, I recognised her instantly. Had she been in the water for the entire 3.5 weeks she had been missing, I would not have been able to recognise her so easily.

The Gazette carried stories in April relating to the issue, wherein local dog owners were warned

to be vigilant. Local charity Animal Ark recently released their own guide to keeping dogs safe.

“There has been a massive increase in dogs going missing all over Dublin,” said Geraldine Haskins, of Animal Ark. “Dogs are being stolen from gardens, houses and

cars. [Pets are being stolen] even while their owners are out walking them.

“We all need to get our act together to protect our pets,” she said.

swimming Classes for water babies CLONDALKIN Leisure Centre is taking bookings for their July and August swimming classes.

The classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and cater for children aged three upwards.

The Little Fins class is aimed at children aged three to five, with instructors in the water with the children, and the emphasis being on learning through fun and games. This class takes place on Mondays and Fridays at 6pm, and on Sundays at 10am.

The beginners class is for children over four and takes place on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

suicide A reason to walk THE Applegreen station on the Lucan Road in Palmerstown is asking its customers to put on their walking boots this weekend and help promote a nationwide event in the process.

The fuel retailer is taking part in a nationwide Suicide Awareness Week from June 17 to 23 on behalf of national suicide prevention and bereavement charity, Console.

Applegreen customers are invited to join management and staff for a 5km Console Walk and Talk, which will take place on Saturday, June 22 at 12pm.

Jail for holding drugs, firearm A DUBLIN father-offour, who was forced to hold nearly €200,000 drugs and a firearm to pay off a debt, has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Keith Doyle (28), formerly of Palmers Court, Palmerstown, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to having cannabis, cocaine and MDMA tablets worth a total of €191,426 for sale or supply on March 21, 2012.

He also pleaded guilty to having a revolver containing live ammunition on the same date.

Detective Garda Anthony Kennedy told prosecuting counsel, Cathleen Noctor BL, that he helped to search the Doyles’ house on the day in question.

He said there were three adults and a number of children present when gardai searched the house.

They found several hold-all bags, on top of a wardrobe, in a bathroom hot press and in a

bedside locker.

The bags contained over €79,000 worth of cannabis, almost 8,000 MDMA tablets worth €60,000, and cocaine valued at over €51,500.

The total value of the drugs was estimated at €191,426.

Gardai also found a Smith and Wesson .38 calibre revolver, containing three live rounds of ammunition.

Doyle was arrested and brought to Lucan Garda Station where he told gardai that he had been playing with his

children on the green at Palmer’s Court earlier that day when a man arrived and told him to “make sure you’re in all day”.

Doyle said a different

man arrived by taxi later and dropped off the hold-all bags containing the drugs and the firearm.

He said he couldn’t describe either man to gardai as he was in fear of his life.

He claimed he had been threatened in October 2011 after he became indebted to a gang for a small drug habit.

Defence counsel Damien Colgan SC said third parties had driven Doyle down the back roads of Clondalkin in October 2011 and put a gun to his head.

Doyle told gardai he couldn’t tell them who the gang was or his life “wouldn’t be worth living”.

“If I said more to you,

I’d get a bullet in the back of my head,” he said.

Doyle told gardai that he was expecting drugs would be in the hold-all, but that when he opened the bag and saw the gun: “I nearly sh*t myself, so I threw it up on top of the wardrobe.”

Mr Colgan said his client has been attending AA and counselling is no longer addicted to drugs.

Judge Martin Nolan accepted that Doyle was “under some duress” to hold the drugs and the firearm as a result of threats made against him.

He said Doyle must have known that the only possible use for the revolver was to kill or seriously injure.

Plan to get people back into class wins credit DUBLIN County Council this week launched a new system aimed at getting people back into education.

Educate credits are a reward for being proactive in the community and allow free access to courses on the part-time programme in the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT).

They can be earned in either of two ways – through the social credits scheme, and the time credits scheme.

The scheme is active immediately and the council is seeking applications.

Mayor King said the project showed the collaboration between the council, ITT and communities at its best.

He said: “This is a wonderful project and I wish it every success.

This will be an opportu-

nity for communities to support individuals to go back to education.

He added: “This project also demonstrates partnership at its best with ITT, County Dublin VEC and South Dublin County Council coming together to support communities and education.”

ITT’s Danny McLaughlin added that the initiative would reward socially-conscious people, and create new ways into education for those interested, with Mayor Cathal King echoing his words.

He said: “This initiative seeks to recognise and reward those socially-driven people who enhance lives or environments in the commu-

nities we serve.

“We hope to create a new pathway to education for people who may otherwise not get the chance because of current financial [limitations] or other constraints.

“We are delighted to once again partner with the council and VEC, on this scheme, and working together on initiatives such as this, we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of the people in the region.”

Community groups, youth groups, residents’ associations and schools can apply for Educate Credits through the Social Credits System.

Adamstown named Ireland’s best station ADAMSTOWN Station has been named the best Commuter Station in Ireland.

The station, which opened in 2008, picked up the award at this year’s Iarnrod Eireann Best Station Awards.

Assistant station manager Brian Quinn, and station worker Simon Doyle, were on hand to pick up their speciallycrafted award.

Best Station Awards reward excellence in customer facilities, cleanliness, innovation and customer service in the country’s 142 railway stations.

Speaking at the awards, the Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, said: “I want to congratulate all the nominees and winners from across Ireland, as there is an obvious pride in the services being provided

at all these stations, and a desire to serve customers well.”

Voting was conducted through an online poll and voting at stations, with almost 15,000 people voting as part of the competition.

Customers were asked to rate their station using customer information, station appearance, staff helpfulness and staff appearance as the criteria.

Locals in Allsops summer auction A NUMBER of local units will be included in the upcoming Allsop Space summer auction.

The auctions have become extremely popular in recent years, selling off distressed properties across the country.

Clondalkin property buyers will have plenty of interest in the auction, which features a total of 121 properties.

South Dublin properties account for 19 lots both residential and commercial.

An apartment at The Orchard, Cloverhill Road, will go under the hammer with a reserve of €45,000, while a three-bed, end-ofterrace home at Sundale Avenue in Jobstown will have a reserve of €60,000.

A home at Finnstown Cloisters on the Newcastle Road in Lucan will have a reserve of €190,000. Similar homes sold as recently as 2008 for €390,000.

This year’s programme features street performers, a Gathering event, set dancing, a ceili, museums, carnival games and the chance to climb the Round Tower, amongst other events.

“We’ve got the Round Tower open for two days this year after last year’s very popular couple of days.

“T he Office of P ublic Works is helping us out with that by building a platform and some stairs and we’re hoping to get 400 people a day up to it.

“It is ticket only and people can get tickets by handing a stamped addressed enve-

lope into Frames Etc, Mannions Newsagents or Marine and General before Monday, June 24.”

Thyes says that the decision to open the tower again this year is a boon to the committee.

“It’s huge for us to have the tower open. When people think of Clondalkin, they think of the tower, but it was closed for so long that a lot of people never got the chance to set foot in the tower.

“There’s a lot of people who would be new to the town and some people who lived here all their lives that have never gotten into the

tower.”

The festival has grown year on year in Clondalkin, with Thyes saying that the local community, both personal and business, have tr uly bought in to the idea.

“A lot of the traders have really bought into the festival.

Some people were a bit iffy when we started it because there was nothing like this put on before, but everyone is now really behind it.

“A lot of the pubs are giving up their car parks for the day and we’re putting on displays in them, like the army display in the Steering Wheel car park.”

Thyes adds that the festival is aimed at showcasing the best of what Clondalkin has to offer.

“Clondalkin has gotten so big that it tends to only hit the news when there is a bit of negative news, but there is much more to it than that.

“People bring family and friends from outside Clondalkin and we’ve pedestrianised the main streets, which allows people to better see the area, particularly the work that Clondalkin Tidy Towns have done.”

Science: Local students pick up prizes for part in initiative

Schools claim maths awards  paul hosford

A number of local schools have been awarded for maths and science excellence.

Talbot Senior National School and Scoil Nano Nagle in Bawnogue, St Brigid’s GNS Palmerstown, Scoil Mhuire, St Mary’s National School Saggart and Gaelscoil na Camoige were all awarded for their participation in the Discover Primary science and maths programme.

Discover Science and Engineering (DSE), the education and outreach programme of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), run the awards programme.

Of the total 491 prima-

ry schools nationwide there were 77 successful schools in Dublin.

The Awards of Science and Maths Excellence recognise the achievements of primary school children and teachers in the application of science and maths in the classroom.

To qualif y for an award, schools were required to keep a log of five activities relating to science and maths undertaken throughout the academic year.

Schools were awarded credit for visiting Discover Science Centres; inviting speakers to the school to talk about science, engineering and maths; hosting a science event; incorporating

maths into their science learning and participating in the Greenwave initiative.

Commenting, Minister for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock, T.D., said: “To see growth in the participation of the Awards in Science and Maths Excellence programme this year is a promising step forward for the successful promotion of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects among students. Continued promotion of STEM subjects is crucial to sustain growth and to ensure future uptake of these subjects at second and third level education.”

In a pilot scheme, six local authority library services have joined forces to spread the message of the importance of summer reading to children and their parents.

Seniors help celebrate Bealtaine’s conclusion

HE Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cathal King (SF) recently brought the county’s highly-popular Bealtaine festival to a close at Tallaght Stadium.

Held to celebrate creativity in older

age, Bealtaine was praised by Mayor King as an initiative that highlights the skills and contributions by older members of the community.

At the closing event, there was great interest in the many entries received

from across the county for a competition that saw citizens express their thanks for, and thoughts on, the good things in their life, with the elders once again showing that they still have much to contribute to the community.

A

MUCH-loved 1980s film – The Goonies – saw lots of Goonie fans congegrate at Movies@Dundrum for a special fundraising showing of the children’s film recently in aid of Outreach Moldova.

With a few fans happily exclaiming the wellworn catchphrase: “Goonies never say die!”, the filmgoers settled down for an enjoyable

screening, with the knowledge that they were helping to support Outreach Moldova make the evening even more special.

The screening raised vital funds for the Irish charity, which works with a wide range of orphaned children in Moldova, as well as many children and young adults with a disability, chronic or terminal illnesses.

Three cheers: launching a hub for beer enthusiasts

Drinking in the atmosphere at a multi-sensory event This is Beer, a new initiative by Heineken to prompt Dubliners to rediscover beer, aims to educate through experience at events across the capital. At a recent “multi-sensory beer-tasting” at the newly-opened 37 Dawson Street, beer connoisseurs Marc Stroobant and Fiona Smith showcased the diversity and depth of a range of beers.

They explained that while beer is a relatively

simple concoction of water, barley, hops, and yeast – each of these ingredients has an element of variability that will affect the taste. So a beer made with hard water will have different flavours from a beer made with soft water.

The quantity of hops, how well the barley has been roasted, and the specific yeast culture used will also impact on the flavours of that beer. The

multitude of combinations allow for a multitude of flavours, strengths and appearances.

Fiona, whose area of expertise is pairing food and beer, introduced a tasting menu and explained how as a rule of thumb, the regional beers tend to complement the regional food.

“Fish and chips works well with a light European lager like Heineken, whereas Tiger Beer, with a

distinctly citrusy zest taste works well with spicier Asian food. Some of the fuller beers like Affligem or Paulaner went well with sweet desserts.

“Par ticipants we checked in with on the evening reported leaving feeling educated and elevated.”

On the write track for a magical moment of fame Eleven-year-old student and budding writer Abigail McCaffrey is set to see her first book published on iTunes in the coming months. Abigail, who hails from Oldtown in Dublin North, and is a pupil at Rolestown National School, first started writing when she started junior infants and has been writing ever since.

Abigail’s story is based on what she describes as “an old-time village” where a girl gets arrested.

She said she still needs to work on some of her paragraphs and punctuation before the story is published.

When she isn’t writing, Abigail loves to read, play Gaelic football, soccer, taekwondo and also loves her pets. Having been told many times that she is a good writer; Abigail says her family and friends are very proud of her latest accomplishment.

Abigail has written the following story for The Gazette. A Little Moment of Fame is about a girl, Kayla, and her efforts to improve her handwriting.

Monday Dear Diary, Guess what? My mam got me tickets to see Beyonce! I’m so happy!

She is my favourite singer on the planet. But on one condition; I improve my writing, so she bought me

a diary. I really think that she is crazy. I mean: only my teacher can’t understand my writing. Plus my mam. Plus my dad. Plus my sister. Plus sometimes my best friend, Jayni. But I’m not really botheredbut I really truly super really want to go and see Beyonce. So I will write in here every day.

Tuesday Dear Diary, Today was the worst day in school ever! Ms Dairymilk told me to stand outside the door because “my writing was un-readable and appalling!” How could she get that impression? Jayni then stood up for me though. “Ms, I really don’t think it is Kayla’s fault,” she said.

“I even saw her, she is practising at home in a new diary.”

But Jay ni’s generous words didn’t tickle her peach. I got extra handwriting homework tonight, and I’m just done now! Oh! Mam just called me. Goodbye!

Wednesday.

Dear Diary, Jayni came over today for a play. She brought a big bag of Smarties!

They are my favourite sweets! Especially the orange ones. Yum yum!

We played all day in my garden with my puppy, Bananas. He is super sweet! We played a game with my twin neighbours,

Dear Diary, AHH! I am so close to Beyonce it is unbelievable! I have been practising in school and guess what? Ms Dairymilk gave me a pack of Smarties and a gold star!

That is so awesome, right!

Jayni was so proud that she gave me a big hug in the middle of class! Mam was so proud of me that she brought me, Jayni and

my older sister, Sarah to Eddie Rockets! It was so delicious. I better go now, it is 11o’clock and I can hardly keep my eyes open!

Friday!!!

Woohoo!

Mam called me to the kitchen today and said to me: “Kayla, I have been looking at your handwriting recently, and I am very impressed with your progress. So, I have decided to ask Sarah to bring you and Jayni to Beyonce tonight!” I could hardly take it all in! “AHHH! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” I screamed, and flung myself at her.

I rang up Jayni and told her the exciting news! We

were washed and dressed and were on the bus in no time.

Saturday Dear Diary, Wow! Last night was amazing! Beyonce was amazing! Everything was amazing! Sarah brought us to McDonalds before the concert, and let us buy whatever we wanted.

I got an ice smoothie and a double cheese burger, and Jayni got the same!

But my favourite moment, out of everything, was when Beyonce called out a seat number, and it was MINE! I went up on stage and got to sing with her! Oh! How I loved my moment of fame...

GONE are the days when the only wedding ceremony venue was the church down the road – people are now breaking from the norm and are making their special day that little bit more interesting.

A civil ceremony can be held in a register office or a venue that has been approved by a registrar.

Many hotels across Ireland are approved to host a civil ceremony but, if you don’t want to stay in the one place, there are alternatives.

If you don’t want to get married in a register office

and have found the perfect venue, unless it has already been approved, a registrar in the district of the venue must inspect and approve it.

For the full list of guidelines, see the general register office’s website at www.groireland.ie.

To ensure the venue is approved in time, you should arrange for approval well in advance of notifying the registrar.

There is an extra fee for a civil ceremony that is held in a venue other than a register office.

For all animal lovers out there, Dublin Zoo has seen its share of weddings on the grounds, and has even featured on TV3’s show, Don’t Tell the Bride. The ceremony is held in the historic Haughton House, located in the heart of the popular tourist attraction.

review: superman rebooted

Look, in the sky, a great movie!

IN A world where the superhero movie is king, the one that started the whole phenomenon has been strangely absent.

In 1978, Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could fly and Hollywood believe that comic books were box-office gold.

Before the last son of Krypton’s first big screen outing, comic books and film had an uneasy relationship, being mostly confined to kids slots on American weekend TV. After Donner brought the Man of Tomorrow to screens, scoring a hit commercially and critically, things died down until Tim Burton’s Batman reignited the craze.

Now you can’t move during a summer for an Avenger here or a Batman there.

So, why have we been missing Supes for so long?

In 2006, Bryan Singer attempted to work some of his X-Men magic on the Metropolis Marvel and came up short, delivering Superman Returns, a worthy entry into the Donner series, but one that completely failed to make a connection with audiences.

series, it was inevitable that the blue and red would appear again on the big screens and it is no surprise that Chris Nolan, who so ably guided Batman back to the top of the zeitgeist, is producer of Man of Steel.

What is surprising is the choice of director.

Zack Snyder is undoubtedly a supremely talented man and his achievements with Dawn of the Dead and 300 marked him out early, but his most recent film, Sucker Punch was a relative bust.

Not exactly the kind of endorsement that gets you handed the keys to a $225 million vehicle.

Still, he knocked it out of the park with Watchmen (for fans, anyway) and has done similarly here.

OUR VERDICT:

SNYDER manages to build a world that is both in keeping with the DC roots laid down in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and refreshingly original. The basis of a very good trilogy is here and, while most criticism will focus on a lack of warmth and humour, that’s not what David S Goyer’s script goes for. Ultimately, an overdue kickstart to a languishing franchise.

The actor is green, but noble enough to don the cape.

Amy Adams’s Lois Lane is harder than the Margot Kidder incarnation, but suits the world that Snyder has created.

As with all good heroes, there must be a good villain.

ing. His depth of bad guys is fairly shallow and Lex Luthor is never a real enough threat for me.

With Michael Shannon’s Zod, a fellow Kryptonian, Snyder has made a great move.

Physically a match for Jar El and all sharp focus and drive, Shannon’s General is a cracker.

With Superman and Batman set to join up for The Justice League within the coming years, and Snyder reportedly on board to direct, there may be some chance that DC Comics halts the Marvel juggernaut.

But first, enjoy the return of Superman.

GAMING HeadTOHead ANALYSIS: CONSOLE CONCERNS SIMILAR END-OFTHE-WORLD GAMES

State of Decay (Xbox 360) LEST some think I’ve been picking on Microsoft in this issue – well, let’s not forget its Xbox games can be innovative and great fun.

In a different vein to The Last of Us (below), State of Decay is another post-apocalyptic title for mature gamers – this time, courtesy of zombies – and set in a pretty, rustic, open world setting.

A download-only title, it frequently boasts shoddy graphics, lamentable AI, clunky design and bugs galore – however, it’s also great fun and extremely compelling, as you attempt to rescue survivors, gather resources and build a community.

Adding real menace to the gameplay, death (and an instant autosave) is permanent, adding an unforgiving, yet welcome, dash of drama, and the simplest of encounters can quickly spiral into a disaster. Quirky, but cool!

The Last of Us (PS3) HERE it is – what seems likely to be Sony’s last truly great game for the PlayStation 3 – and what a great game it is, too.

Space presvents me from fairly singing the praises of this longawaited PS3 title. It sees two unlikely travelling companions attempting to cross a post-apocalyptic America, now crumbling and overgrown, while dangerous people and Infected (think: zombies) roam the streets and wilds of this ruined world.

However, its superb characterisation, writing and acting (yes, acting), coupled with terrific stage design and compelling gameplay, make it a definite must-have for mature gamers.

Gaming giant creates a new battle to win

AT PRESENT, Microsoft and Sony have started rolling out the big guns, readying gamers for the upcoming releases of their next-gen consoles – the Xbox One and PlayStation Four, respectively.

While Nintendo , as ever, follows its own typically idiosyncratic path with the WiiU, battle has already started between the One and the PS4 – and Sony appear to be bludgeoning Microsoft in the battle for gamers’ interest, given the poorly-handled One launch, ahead of its future roll-out.

The recent quip about Microsoft earning Sony’s Employee of the Month title is ringing a little truer lately, with Microsoft’s heavy focus on the One as an all-in entertainment hub (rather than, y’know, a games console) spooking many gamers, with websites aflame with criticism.

Despite its excellent platform-exclusive franchises and some fantastic-looking new games announced for the One, it’s an

unfortunate step for the company to have alarmed many Xbox gamers.

While nobody doubts the quality of the console itself, or the great games it will have, the focus on the One as an entertainment hub curries no favour with European markets, which, similiarly to Apple’s licensing deals in America, still have a greatly reduced media selection to watch via consoles over here – not to mention patchy internet/broadband infrastructures.

And, in the meantime, Sony is continuing to throw hard-hitting jabs into the fray, pointing out that the PS4 will be notably cheaper than its main rival, doesn’t need to connect online to play games, is region-unlocked to play games from anywhere, will easily allow people to swap games with friends, and so on.

Indeed, a particular bone of contention for many gamers has been the widely denounced point that the One has to

connect to the internet at least once a day, to play games – an irritating point for many who may not connect online, or who may have a shoddy internet service – or none.

At the time of writing, Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business division president, Don Mattrick, has poured fuel on the fire by saying in an interview with GameTrailers: “Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity; it’s called Xbox 360”.

Not quite a motivational incitement to get the One, I think you’ll agree.

Of course, this is all par for the course with the launch of new tech – someone always comes out on top, with a winner and a loser in the initial PR battles before the longterm war starts.

However, even these months before either console hits the street, Microsoft has already created a needless skirmish (with many aggrieved gamers) that it shouldn’t have had to face, let alone win.

For the many - suddenly wary - Xbox fans that the company will now have to fight to reclaim or retain, to misquote The Bard: “Now is the summer of our discontent ...”

In a comment rounded upon by many gamers and websites as inviting online-wary users not to get the Xbox One, Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business division said:“We have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity; it’s called Xbox 360” (the One’s predecessor)

LOST&MISSING WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE LAST GUARDIAN?

E3 passes with yet another no-show for the long-awaited PlayStation game AT THE time of writing, E3 – the annual, vast videogame conference and show in Los Angeles – is under way, showing the games and tech of tomorrow.

However, once again, Sony’s The Last Guardian is a no-show. One missing game, when hundreds, if not thousands, were on show? So what?

The Last Guardian has been in development for several years at this stage, with notable departures, rumoured developing difficulties, and so on, keeping it locked into the “troubled” category.

It also follows two previous titles in the same loose family of games – Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus – that did much to add a dash of creative (if not emotional) heart to Sony’s PlayStation consoles, giving

MISSING the notably absent title a little extra weight by its absence, as gaming critics keep a weary, if hopeful, eye out for its release.

Here’s hoping that it won’t simply vanish as the platforms change ...

Local bands to battle for Bundoran stage slot Two local Dublin bands, The City Apples and Pyramid Hill (below) have landed themselves the opportunity to play off for a slot on the Vodafone Stage at the Sea Sessions music festival in Bundoran on Sunday evening.

This boy is cracking up Good news for Thin Lizzy fanatics: the boy will be back in town soon, and not before time.

The bronze statue of Phil Lynott is due back in its rightful place in Dublin City Centre in the coming weeks. Thousands of euro worth of damage was done to the life-size figure when it was knocked over at the beginning of May. Two people were questioned and then released by gardai after coming for ward, and there’s been a noticeable empty space where the Lizzy legend once stood outside Bruxelle’s on Harry

Street, just off Grafton Street, ever since.

While many music fans were angered by the cracking of the iconic statue, many did crack a smile at what was left in its place while repairs have been carried out.

A poster stating: “The Boy is Out of Town.

Philo’s Gone on Holidays with his Mum. Back Soon” has been informing fans, tourists and passers-by of the whereabouts of the Dublin landmark since the incident happened.

The repairs, believed to be costing about €4,000, are being paid for by a mystery donor,

while fans are being reassured the effigy will be better secured in its place this time around.

The life-size figure of six-foot-tall Philo, dressed in a f lowing coat and leaning on a guitar, is a mecca for fans, especially around Phil Lynott’s birthday in August and the anniversary of his untimely death in January.

It’s expected the return of the mighty bronze will be cause for another celebration in the city next month, and rightly so.

Let’s just hope we don’t see this boy cracking up or broke down again.

The Soul Rebels sidle back out for their encore at the Nerve Centre, launching their audio assault with the refrain “Derry, what the hell are you waiting for?”

From there, the brass band from New Orleans launch into their reworking of a classic Jay-Z track – fittingly also called Encore – saxophone, tr umpet and colourfully decorated tuba blasting one last track for the night.

T h e i r k l a xo n - c a l l st r ike s a p ar ti cu l ar chord after a manic jaunt to the north-west to take in the town and its annual jazz festival, this year given extra zest as part of the European City of Culture celebrations.

It star ted in laidback fashion with the train ride from Belfast.

W hile coming from

Dublin would be much better navigated by car, the opportunity to take in the rugged Foyle-side views that split counties Derry and Donegal is worth the extra time.

To f u r t h e r e a s e into the day, Encore Brasserie laid on an ambient lunchtime fare, local duo clarinetist Roy Mitchell and guitarist Greg Payne providing the mood music of a Gatsby-style bygone era.

Stepping away from the festival fever, the Tower Museum was the next port of call, a quick step around the city walls – perfectly preserved from their 1600s conceptions – past the Guild Hall.

Recently refurbished, the museum houses two permanent exhibitions – the Armada Shipwreck and the Story of Derry.

He is a rare jewel, providing both sides of the religious and sectarian divide with a

depth of knowledge and authority that will be sorely missed when he vacates his post. Catch him while you can before his tenure comes to an end in the coming months.

G e r r y p r ov i d e s a huge dollop of local character, something that abounded in La Sosta over dinner, hidden underneath an arch to open out a view overlooking the Peace Bridge.

Specialising in authentic “cucina Italiano” from the Abruzzo region, husband and wife team Claudio and Maureen Antonucci achieve, with the stove providing a warm glow, a great front-room feeling.

Indeed, Nobel Peace prize winner John Hume, along with wife Pat, was in for a midweek bite and while he had little time for the

jazz festivities, he did proffer “you’re in my favourite restaurant” before returning to his steak.

The cooking is delicately rustic, the lamb in artichoke cream topping the bill. Claudio, meanwhile, has plenty of tales - to help ease down the marsala and limoncello - from his colourful past as one of the few to emigrate from Italy to the city in the 1980s.

His larger than life nature opens up the night for a festival that is second only to Cork on the Irish jazz scene with over 200 acts playing in 80 venues around the compact city with 35,000 people getting involved.

Most of those venues are improvised.

cathedral as the Soul Rebels squeezed their eight-piece orchestra onto the stage.

With elements of ska layered onto the horn l i n e s a n d h a r m o ny vocals – delivered with a cheeky sway – homegrown tracks are mixed with some classic pop mash-ups, the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams was given a brassy kick.

It’s party time and the Derry hometown revellers greet it with gusto.

When encore time rolls around, it’s clear the crowd is not left waiting for too much more.

What do you offer your clients that differs from your competitors?

How has the recession impacted your business?

We enjoy creating local employment and serving our customers’ needs. Our business is extremely diverse and every day is different, meaning that each day offers different opportunities. We like to use our experience and skills to assist our customers in making the correct selection of equipment for their job.

As with everyone else in business, we have been affected by the recession. We realise that everybody is in a similar situation and as a result we have maintained our hire rates for many years without an increase and have no increases planned. Any

What is your favourite thing about doing business in your local area?

1. Plan a yearly household budget Add all your yearly household bills and divide by 12.

That figure is the amount you need to put away each month to meet those bills just to run the home. Any capital or “luxury” spending must be found outside of this annual budget. You could also adopt a monthly budget if preferred but you should in any event put at least two hours every month into planning your finances to ensure you are on track with your spending. Remember if your expenditure exceeds income, you have two choices – earn more or cut costs. You should in any event query every item of expenditure – ask yourself, do you need it and is there a better or cheaper alternative ?

2. Think smart with your surplus cash Do not leave surplus money in your current account or low interest-bearing accounts. At least transfer it into your bank’s best deposit account and when you need funds to meet commitments, transfer over a couple of days before due. If that deposit account is size-

able, negotiate with your bank – their rates are much less than for example KBC Bank (2.6% - on demand) and therefore may have the discretion to increase that deposit rate in order to hold on to your business.

3. Check your bank charges regularly and cut down your banking bills there are too many cases of overcharging from all the banks to accept that your bank is not one of them ! Sometimes, these charges can be waived at the discretion of the manager – if you don’t ask, there’ll be no waiving. Try to avoid exceeding your overdraft permission if you have an overdraft. The surcharges and fees are punitive. You should also operate online bank accounts – better deals, easier to operate and no waiting in queues plus saving on time and travel expense. THERE was good news on the jobs front for Clondalkin this week as nearly 200 jobs were secured in three separate moves.

Firstly, Liffey Valley Shopping Centre has announced the arrival of eight new nation-

al and international retailers, which will create 120 new jobs within the centre.

There was good news for existing jobs also, as workers in two local stores were granted reprieves in the face of possible redundancies.

The Atlantic Homecare store in Liffey Valley will

remain open, after it had been marked for closure when the company went into administration last month, and 40 jobs in Ballymount were rescued last week after a management buy-out of building providers TJ Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Mahony, part of the Moritz Group.

A Gathering of camogie from all over the world this July The Camogie Gathering event, Let’s Play Ball And Have A Ball, was launched at the Mansion House recently by president of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor.

The event takes place on July 25, 26 and 27, and is organised in conjunction with the Dublin Camogie Board to celebrate the Gathering 2013, with Toronto Camogie Club, Fullen Gaels, Manchester, Croydon and Tara Camogie Clubs, London along with a North America representative team are confirmed to attend the tournament.

Dublin camogie clubs St Brigid’s, Ballyboden St Enda’s, Na Fianna, St Vincent’s, and Trinity Gaels are also taking part.

Speaking at the launch, Lawlor said: “The Camogie Association in conjunction with Dublin Camogie Board is delighted to welcome members of the camogie and Gaelic games family to Ireland.

“We are pleased to support this fantastic initiative and we are looking forward to the number of teams who are coming from Canada, the United Kingdom

and North America. It promises to be a fantastic weekend of camogie with fun, friendship, community, and a shared passion for camogie with Gaelic games and Irish culture at the heart of it all.”

Visiting teams will enjoy a busy itinerary, starting with an official welcome event at Na Fianna CLG on Mobhi Road on Thursday, July 25.

On Friday, teams will take part in a camogie skills and coaching session in Na Fianna. Later that day, they will visit Croke Park Museum and play in Croke Park.

On Saturday, Na Fianna CLG is the venue for a camogie tournament between participating Dublin Camogie club teams and international teams. The tournament will conclude with a closing event that night.

Dublin Camogie Board chairperson Pat Martin said: “This promises to be a fantastic weekend and we are looking forward immensely to the arrival of our international teams. A busy schedule of events is in place and we hope that all of this year’s visitors will enjoy the experience.”

Fiona O’Sullivan and Jenny Byrne from Dublin were among the newlyannounced members of the camogie National Referees Academy which was launched at Croke Park recently.

The Referees Academy is the first of its kind within the association and is part of a number of initiatives introduced by president of the association Aileen Lawlor to support the development and progression of referees.

The 12 referees selected for this year’s academy will receive concentrated training and will be monitored and assessed on their refereeing performance throughout the year.

FastSport Leprechaun cup proves a big hit: SCOIL Mhuire, Lakelands claimed the inaugural Leprechaun Cup Cailini as 102 girls from eight primary schools took part in 28 games of cricket in four-and-a-half hours last week.

The event is part of efforts to promote the involvement of girls in cricket at primary school level.

They edged out Balrothery NS in the final by 16 runs after going undefeated throughout the blitz, hosted by Railway Union.

They were joined in the competition

by Zion NS, Kill of the Grange, Mount Anville JS, Taney NS, Castleknock NS and Archbishop Ryan NS. Speaking about the event, Caoilfhionn Rowan, Mount Anville and Kill of the Grange coach, said: “It was great to see such huge numbers wanting to be involved in the girls’ game, and so encouraging to see the initiative from Cricket Leinster to run this much-desired event.”

Golf fans from around Dublin and Ireland are set to converge on Carton House next weekend when the annual celebration of the sport in the country takes place, with the Irish Open r unning from June 27 to 30.

at this year’s event, with four of Ireland’s major tournament winners Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Ror y McIlroy - all competing for the much-coveted title, alongside Carton House’s own touring professional and former Irish Open champion, Shane Lowry.

The hole will include an imposing grandstand seating almost 1,500 fans enveloping the picturesque penultimate hole of the Montgomerie Course, where fans can cheer the shots from the famous names

as they watch all of the drama unfold. This grandstand is intended to be an exciting, atmospheric hub of the tournament where spectators will gather and cheer on their golfing heroes.

Spectators will be encouraged to show their support for all the players and offer a rapturous reception by creating an electric atmosphere when they take on the 17th hole, with the River Rye running down the right hand side adding fur ther jeopardy and drama.

A big screen will be erected at the 17th hole allowing spectators to watch all of the action as it happens around the course, along with

a live Twitter feed for spectators to describe the atmosphere and tweet updates to those watching.

These new innovations will also include live Twitter competitions that will give golfing enthusiasts a chance to play a shot on the 17th itself.

Budding Dublin GAA stars of the future will be thrilled to hear that the Elverys GAA/GPA Youth Camps are set to arrive in St Brigid’s and Kilmacud Crokes later this month.

From June 24, the camps are offering young players aged 13 to 15 the chance to learn Gaelic football and hurling skills from the county’s top inter-county stars, including Bernard Brogan, Kevin Nolan, and Liam Rushe.

The next generation of stars will receive an insight into the

life and trials of an inter-county player while undergoing an action-packed week of conditioned games, mental preparation, sports nutrition, skills and athletic development.

In addition, all camp enrolees will receive a limited edition Elverys Sports pack.

Camp days run from 10am to 2pm and there will be a mixture of conditioned games and skill drills that will both educate and challenge participants of all levels on a daily basis.

Throughout the week players in each of the 32 camps across

Ireland will undergo a number of skills competitions with a chance to win prizes including a Lenovo laptop worth €1,000.

Speaking at the launch of the camps, St Oliver Plunkett’s Bernard Brogan said: “It’s great to give kids of this age an opportunity to learn the skills of GAA in a top quality venue like St Brigid’s and Kilmacud Crokes.

Coiste na Gaeilge confirmed that some of the association’s top hurlers and footballers have agreed to participate in a campaign to raise awareness of the close ties between the GAA and the language, and to encourage people to speak whatever Gaeilge they have.

IRELAND’S Under-20 rugby players gave a fine account of themselves in the group stages of the IRB Junior World Cup championship held in France.

In spite of failing to progress from their group, Ireland put on a series of fine and inspired performances that were capped by a so-close comeback against New Zealand that would have seen them progress into the final stages of the tournament.

As it stands, the Irish will face France in a fifth/ eighth place play-off, due

to take place as Gazette Sport goes to press, to see who will face either Argentina or Australia in the fifth/sixth place playoff next Sunday.

Their first outing in the tournament in Vennes saw the boys in green claim the scalp of Australia, with a 19-15 victory. The boot of Tom Daly proved to be the winning of the match, with four penalties and a conversion of a Rory Scholes try securing the advantage over the Wallabies.

Against second opponents Fiji, Ireland again brought theirA game, running in six tries against the

south-sea islanders, with Rory Scholes, Christopher Taylor, Daniel Leavy and Darren Sweetnam also going over the whitewash to register a 46-3 final score.

They were undone, however, against the All Blacks in their last match at Stade De La Rabine.

Within three points at half time, a Kiwi rout of three tries in nine minutes after the turn put them very much in the ascendancy. But Ireland’s neversay-die attitude shone through, and they came close to a famous victory, only to be repelled by a defiant New Zealand

defence.

Speaking afterwards, Irish captain Luke McGrath said: “I think, to be honest, a lot of our guys hadn’t played against New Zealand before and we just threw the kitchen sink at them and you saw that.

“It’s a very tough one to take but I am so proud of the lads and how we played.”

Head coach Mike Ruddock said: “Every loss is tough to take when you are a coach, you want to win every game. That was a tough battle against quality opposition of course but I am proud of

my team. I thought my players were fantastic.

“You have got to give our guys huge credit, particularly to Luke as captain to rally his troops the way he did, get them back on track.

“We introduced some fresh blood and we worked hard, got back into the game and took it right down to the wire.

“We might not have won the game, but I think we won a lot of respect from a lot of people watching the game and a lot of teams watching the way we went toe to toe with a pretty formidable team.”

Check your diary for the Atlantic Cup next weekend Next weekend will see four of Europe’s best amateur American Football clubs converge on Tallaght stadium to attempt to take the title of Western European champions in the 2013 Atlantic Cup tournament.

The event, which takes place on June 29 and 30, will see Amersfoort Untouchables from the Netherlands, the Brussels Tigers from Belgium, Northern Ireland’s Belfast Trojans and local team Trinity College Dublin battle for the crown This is the first year that two Shamrock Bowl Conference teams – Belfast and Trinity College - have contested the tournament. The Brussels Tigers and Belfast Trojans have both posted an impressive 100% win record in their domestic leagues.

Amersfoort Untouchables finished last season with an impressive 8-3 record overall in the Dutch league. The team enters the tournament with the added pressure of having to defend the title on behalf of the Netherlands American football federation after the Lelystad Commanders won last year.

Brussels Tigers are the dominant team in Belgium right now. They gained entry to the tournament with an impressive 46-6 victory over Antwerp Diamonds in last year’s Belgian Bowl. To date, they are unbeaten this season in the Belgian championship.

This is the fifth year of the championships and this year is being hosted by the Irish American Football Association (IAFA). IAFA is also hosting the championships as part of The Gathering in association with South Dublin County Council, South Dublin Tourism and The Gathering Ireland, and the Atlantic Cup is one of three events IAFA is hosting as part of The Gathering Dublin.

Ormond aiming to set up Burns fight night Clondalkin fighter Stephen Ormond is hoping to put on an eye-catching display when he returns to the ring on July 5 in Bethnal Green, London.

Without a known opponent as yet, Ormond is keen to ensure that the form that secured him the WBU Lightweight World Champion’s crown at the Carlton Hotel in Tyrrelstown in barely two minutes of the second round against Laszio Robert Balogh is to the fore once more.

With the WBO belt held by Scotsman Ricky Burns his current goal, Ormond will be looking to make sure that his next stint on the canvas on the undercard of the Light Middleweight World Championship fight between Jennifer Rezke and Mikaela Lauren will bring him closer to a fight that will see him contest another major belt.

Speaking to irishboxing.com, Ormond said: “I’m really looking forward to fighting on July 5 in London. I don’t know who I’m fighting yet, but I promise I will be ready for them.

“My team has big plans for me and that means I’ll be fighting more and more in the UK. “I would like to fight the top guys in the weight division, big names like Kevin Mitchell or Ricky Burns, as soon as possible.

“By fighting in London more and putting in some really good performances, hopefully Eddie Hearn will take notice and I’ll get to fight Kevin or Ricky, sooner than later.”

Salute to Christy at LSL annual celebration Bluebell United FC’s Christy Beahan was honoured at the recent Leinster Senior League annual presentation with a special award that recognised his contribution to

soccer throughout his lifetime.

Christy has been an active member of the club since 1946 and played in the very first match ever contested

by Bluebell.

THE DDSL team once again secured the SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup after a 2-0 victory over 2011 champions NDSL at the University of Limerick on Friday.

The DDSL ran out winners in a rain-soaked final after goals in either half made the difference against an NDSL side that featured Corduff’s Stephen Morley, Yassine En-Neyah and Eoin Doyle.

The DDSL secured the title without conceding a goal and were unarguably the strongest

side in the competition.

It was the champions who threatened first when classy winger Shane Stokes carved out a chance for Joel Bekomba with excellent work down the left but the striker dragged his shot narrowly wide.

T he opening goal came in the 23rd minute with Stokes making another excellent break before cutting the ball back and this time Nzingo – who is the first player from Mountview to makes the U-14 representative side – adjusted himself well to steer the ball into the NDSL goal.

lege student Niamh Dunphy is currently representing Ireland at the Boccia European Championships which are taking place this week in Portugal.

Four minutes later Sean Cronin fired in a free-kick from deep for the NDSL that found the head of Sam Ennis but the midfielder ’s attempt was straight at NDSL keeper Ethan Farrell, who gathered comfortably.

Two minutes into the second half Stokes made another penetrating run in from the left flank. He opted to shoot this time and was only a denied a goal by a brilliant stop from Oisin McCarthy in the NDSL goal.

The DDSL wrapped up the victory in the 58th minute when Michael Cregan broke

through the NDSL defence before slamming the ball past the unfortunate McCarthy.

Earlier in the competition, the NDSL got through their group with wins over Kerry and Roscommon before beating Dundalkin the quarter-finals with EnNeyah on the mark along with Sean Trimble and Jason Grouse.

They subsequently beat Cork in the semifinal on penalties.

The DDSL’s progress, meanwhile, was serene as they raced through the group phases with 3-0 wins over WWEC and Kildare while the

SDFL were beaten 5-0.

Limerick County were knocked out in the quarter-finals by 6-0 and then the Limerick city league were dismissed 5-0 in the final four, setting up the all-Dublin decider.

With 32 schoolboy leagues from around the country, the SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup continues to be a major part of the Irish football calendar and many of the players will be hoping they did enough to earn the attention of the FAI coaching staff and earn a call-up to FAI development squads next season.

Round Tower intermediate footballers outclassed rivals Raheny with a strong team performance in the junior A championship.

In recent seasons Tower’s have enjoyed their fair share of heartbreak courtesy of the northsiders, but an excellent and emphatic first half performance signalled this Tower side did not want to leave St Anne’s Park with the bitter disappointment of previous outings.

Within six minutes, they were three points ahead, with all scores coming from Justin McGrane.

Two minutes later, they were six ahead when Ger Hickey ran at a retreating Raheny, and his hand pass saw Eric Finn finish low into the net for a major.

Raheny registered their first score after 10 minutes but Tower’s attacking was relentless.

The home side were unable to cope with the dogged determination and tackling of Tower’s, with Damien Murray, O’Broin and Corless excelling.

On 17 minutes, Tower’s

scored their second goal when O’Broin, Paddy Stynes, Stephen Homan, Ger Hickey and Jason Murphy constructed a move that ended when Finn clinically finished.

A McGrane free stretched Tower’s lead to 10, and a red card after a foul on Finn saw Dermot Milton curl over the subsequent free.

Raheny responded with three early points in the first 10 minutes of the second half to leave Tower’s supporters somewhat anxious, but McGrane settled nerves with a solid point from 30m.

FORMER Deansrath CS student Correy Davidson is buzzing following his call-up to the Irish soccer team to play in the World University Games in early July in Russia for what will be his first representative appearance.

He received the nod following a superb season with Pearse College whom he helped reach the final of the Colleges’ Cup against Carlow IT. It earned him a call-up to an Irish side to play Wales, but injury put paid to that chance and seemingly for the trip to Kazan after he was named on the standby list.

But manager Danny Crowley sub-

sequently included him in the panel of 20 for the competition, which gets under way on July 5, offering Davidson a golden ticket to a top-level event.

“This will be the first time I’ve played for my country at any sort of level,” he told GazetteSport this week. “So, I’m absolutely chuffed. It is a big honour.

To represent your country at any level is a big thing and I’m lucky to be travelling to Russia to compete.”

It will be a unique competition with Ireland set to play Mexico, China and the tournament hosts Russia in the group stages, offering something of a journey into the unknown for the young Clondalkin man.

“It’s going to be great to see different styles of football. I’ve never seen any

other country play in person up close so it will be huge to see their style and test yourself against other great footballers. It’s what you want; you can’t improve if you’re not up against better players.”

Since his call up, he has played his part in challenge matches in games against the Republic of Ireland U-19s and St Pat’s Athletic before beating Northern Ireland regional team 3-0 with Davidson saying the mood in the camp is sky-high.

“We all gelled really quickly and are all good footballers. We needed to gel fast because we are going to a huge competition and have put the head down because we want go out there and try and win it.”

Manager Crowley, meanwhile, is delighted with the standard of players at his disposal for the Games.

“Having held trials all over the country, we are very pleased with the calibre of player that will be representing Team Ireland. The World University Games is a fantastic chance for our elite student athletes to compete at the highest level. We have a tough group in Mexico, China and Russia, but our players are very much looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“I would like to thank all the players who took part in the trials and games over the past few months and acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved in third level football in Ireland.”
