The Special Olympians Are Coming to VVC

The Special Olympics Mojave River Valley League, Team Rogue, is in the High Desert preparing for victory this season. Team Rogue is composed of 17 members ranging from ages 15-27, all with the same dedication and enthusiasm to play volleyball.

Volleyball coach Rena Smith and College Professor, Melanie Dube-Price volunteer their time to coach these athletes. “Our team name is Rogue because we embrace the ‘rebelness’ of being different,” said Smith. According to the Special Olympics organization website, the Special Olympics provides athletic training to 5.7 million athletes with intellectual disabilities. This organization does more than sports training, “They give these athletes a feeling of accomplish-

ment and belonging,” said Mary, mother of a Team Rogue member. Mary continued to discuss just how much the Special Olympics has given her daughter hope in a world that is sometimes cruel to those who are different.

The Peak of VVC

The Peak Food Pantry opened its door to Victor Valley College (VVC) students on August 28. The Peak is a new resource created to help students who do not have access to food throughout their day.

This service is being offered upstairs in the Student Activities Center (SAC)Building 44 Room 9. It will be open on Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. VVC students who are interested in receiving assistance, must fill out the required form, have a current student ID, be registered in the

current semester, and have the registration statement.

The Food Pantry is sponsored by the VVC Associated Student Body Council, Student

Equity & Success, Financial Aid and the VVC Foundation.

It has been created to help aid students going through financial hardship.

Ron Friedman, Ph.D., is an award-winning psychologist who stated in his article, What You Eat Affects Your Productivity; “Just about everything we eat is converted by our body into glucose, which provides the energy our brains need to stay alert. When we’re running low on glucose, we have a tough time staying focused and our attention drifts.

This explains why it’s hard to concentrate on an empty stomach.”

This service is available for any student that is striving for success and needs one less thing to worry about.

Veteran’s Lunch and Learn

Following their military contracts, former military members wonder what can be next for them in their lives.

Most of the former members are those who enlisted right after high school or have been veterans for a while now. They are pursuing a higher education and are unsure of the resources available to them.

The Veteran’s Resource Center is located at Victor Valley College on the lower campus in Building 80 in Room 2, near the campus security building. The Veteran’s Resource Center has partnered with Veteran Affairs Loma Linda (VA Loma Linda), which is a healthcare system that provides health care for veterans in Southern California.

On September 13, 2017, a Lunch and Learn was held for the veterans. This lunch guided those interested in pursuing

a higher education to the resources that they have available to them. The guest speakers included Adonay Silva, a peer support specialist also involved in Transition and Care Management Program.

ist, and Ted Petersen, a special guest, who attended the event.

All of the guest speakers discussed the resources that are available to Veterans and answered questions about these services. These lunches will be planned monthly. Top-

ics will include job opportunities, scholarships, information about the G.I. Bills, academic counselling, and enrollment assistance. The Veteran’s Resource Center also provides a lounge, a computer lab, and a quiet study environment.

Monday, September 11th the ceremony was held at 6:30 a.m. on the 16th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The ceremony started with the posting of the colors and the wreath presentation by the Administration of Justice and Fire Academy students. The ASB Council then led the group in a reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Ed Heaberlin, the Chairperson for the Theatre Arts department,

thinks this is an important ceremony to have because, “It acknowledges the need to honor and remember how this event has impacted people's lives.” The flags will remain visible during the week for all to see.

Between the Bookshelves

By Morgan Earles Reporter The library at Victor Valley College has a lot to offer.

It is located across the lake, next to the Academic Commons building. It has a wide array of resources such as: photocopy machines, printing, books on reserve, movies, databases, and catalogs to help with any researching needs.

Students can use the printing or copy services are only 10 cents a page. To put a book

on reserve, a student ID card or any form of I.D. is needed.

The wonderful staff is able to help with any questions. The hours for this Fall semester are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library offers long hours to help accommodate students’ busy schedule.

The library is a two level building with six study rooms that can be put on reserve.

Putting a room on reserve is

easy, it can be done directly at the library, through a mobile device, or by scanning a QR code. Andrew Gomes stated, “I go to the library at least twice a week, it’s a great place to get some quiet study time in, it also has my books on reserve which comes in handy during the first weeks of school!”

Services of the D.S.P.S. Office

Victor Valley College’s Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS) office is committed to providing students with disabilities the resources they need to get the best learning experience possible. As an institution that receives federal funding, VVC is required by section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act to ensure that all students, regardless of disability, have access to a thorough, fulfilling college education.

Students with documented

disabilities and medical needs that interfere with their learning, such as brain injuries, physical disabilities, or loss of hearing are eligible for assistance from VVC’s DSPS. The DSPS office offers many kinds of services to aid students, including mobility help, notetaking and reader services, counseling specific to the student’s needs, and registration assistance.

Students looking to apply to the DSPS program should request written documentation of their disability from a certified professional who is familiar with their medical history

and deliver it to the DSPS office, along with an official DSPS application filled out at the office. Once the application process has begun, the DSPS office will call to schedule an appointment.

The DSPS office is located in building 50, the second Student Services center, between building 54 and the cafeteria.

The office is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

ASB Discount Cards

By Patrick Patton III Reporter Victor Valley College Associated Student Body is offering official coupon cards good to be used at the college as well as numerous local businesses. “It’s just $10 out of your pocket”, ASB Club member Katrina Ortiz explains how affordable the new VVC Discount Card presented by ASB is. Ortiz lists a handful of perks that come with an ASB card, “You can use the ASB computer lab for free, you can print up to 10 pages that day for free, you get a free ticket to entertainment (sporting events, musicals, live performances, etc.).

You can come support VVC as a campus!”

In addition to free printing and free admission to VVC productions, the ASB card provides free transportation to its holders in conjunction with Victor Valley Transit authority. Ortiz stated that “you just show it to the bus driver and you’re good to go.” These are the initial perks of the ASB Card.

What’s more, ASB is introducing the new 2017-2018 Discount Card. This card has discounts to over 45 stores and restaurants in the High Desert. To list a few; Steak N’ Shake, Oggi’s, 24 Hour Fitness, Victor Bowl, Cinemark, AMC, Hill Top Salon, and Jiffy Lube.

The new VVC Discount Card comes free with the purchase of a regular ASB card, they are available in the Bursar’s Office.

The Road To Success

By Brayan Torres Reporter The Extended Opportunity Program and Services, E.O.P.S., main purpose is to motivate students that are educationally and economically

“disadvantaged” to succeed.

The program provides student counseling, offers book vouchers, career counseling, priority registration and other great benefits. With over 13,000 students registering for classes, priority registration can be

useful.

Tamala Clark, one of the E.O.P.S counselors, stated, “Our mission and goal is to make sure that our students are taken care of and the road to success is a little easier for them.” Director of E.O.P.S,

Carl D. Smith, states, “Students are my first concern.

I believe no one should ask more from others than they expect from themselves.”

To be eligible for the program, a student must be a resident of California, currently enrolled in 12 semester units, and cannot have received an associate degree. According to the E.O.P.S pamphlet, students must submit an application and a current Student Aid Report, which can be printed from the FAFSA webpage.

Current assessment scores must be submitted with the application and can be obtained in the Assessment Center in Building 55.

Club Rush

By Cindy Bliss Reporter Club rush event was held in the Student Activities Center Bldg. 44 from Monday, September 11 through Wednesday September 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It is a three day event that is held each fall and spring to allow students to see the active clubs that Victor Valley College has to offer on campus. Clubs are a great way to have students to get involved.

Amber Scott, the ASB Public Relations Senator said what it takes to form a club on campus. Students will need a faculty advisor, five members and a registration statements, Officers for the club must maintain a 2.0 GPA and a current ASB card.. There are presently 5 clubs that are chartered, which include Ready Rams, Nursing Association, Psychology Club, Robotics

Club and Black Scholars United (BSU). Scott added that there are another six that have not been chartered. These clubs were still able to attend club rush Victor Valley College United Nations Club, Rams Rhythmic Dance Club, Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA), the Math Club, Campus Cru-

saders for Christ, and The Olympians which is a track & field club. Each club representative said that their club charter will be coming sometime in the next week or so.

One of the organizations on campus is Phi Theta Kappa, whose faculty advisor is Deanna Sanabria. The purpose of

Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. Courtney LeMay, a Phi Theta Kappa member states “being a member of Phi Theta Kappa has allotted me the opportunity to be recognized for my achievements during my years here at Victor Valley College, as well as opening up many scholarships opportunities to me.

The Art of Communication By: Elizabeth Manzo Reporter The Communication Center provides multiple resources for students to gain the knowledge and confidence in oral communication skills.

There are friendly English and Spanish peer tutors in the center to assist all students in practicing, recording, and constructively critiquing speeches.

It is common for students to be intimidated of public speaking, but the Communication Center is there to support students and perfect all levels of communication. “I felt confident and butterfly free once I left the center. The tutors were all helpful and easy to speak to which made the process a whole lot easier,” said Business student, Pamela Razo.

The Communication Center at Victor Valley College is located in building 54, room 213. The Communication Cen-

ter includes 14 work stations, with limited free printing. Students can use group rooms to study for all courses, it is not exclusive to just Communication classes. Textbooks are also available to be checked out, free of charge, for Com-

munication Studies. Students of all majors are encouraged to visit the center, to polish a skill that will be beneficial in all careers and aspects of life.

Facilitator of the Communications Center, Jennifer Fowlie stated, “Students need

to really be able to, regardless of discipline and career, speak well...and the only way to get better at it is to practice.”

Fowlie continued to discuss the importance of effective communication in everyday life and how with it, life can positively change.

Walk-ins are welcomed in the Communication Center. Students can also make an appointment by calling (760) 2454271 extension 2820. The working hours of the center are Monday Thursday: 12:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday: 8:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m., weekends and Holidays the center is closed.

Math Made Easy

By Courtney LeMay Reporter The Math Success Center has been available on the Victor Valley College (VVC), campus since 2012.

In the Fall of 2016, the center moved to the Advance Technology Center, (ATC), Building 21, room 146. The hours were recently increased and the center is now open Monday through Thursday 9p.m. -7p.m. and Fridays 9p.m.- 5:30p.m.

The Math Success Center aims to improve student success by offering a wide range of services; tutors, workshops, computers, special events, etc. Professor Nichole Carver, a tenured teacher at VVC, oversees and

advises the Math Success Center. Tutor, Matt Johnson, states, “We are here to ease the pain of those who don’t like

color coded by the type of math they tutor. The Math Success Center offers workshops weekly and a schedule

math.” The tutors schedules are posted weekly, and are

“Talk Like a Pi-rate Day” on September 19, is one of the special events the center hosts.

The event will offer math activities with a pirate twist, and free food; everyone is welcome to attend.

Writing Center Workshops

By Tracy Ochoa Reporter The Writing Center is the place for students who struggle with writing essays or need help with any type writing assignment. The center offers one-on-one guidance. The tutors help students organize their essays and help with research ideas. There are multiple computers available, as well as comfortable seating where students can brainstorm for their assignments.

Starting the third week of the semester, the center will be providing writing workshops from 4p.m. to 5p.m. and 6p.m. to 7p.m. Monday through Thursday and 12p.m. to 1p.m. on Fridays. These workshops will provide help on how to properly write an essay and will cover different theories such as APA references and MLA paraphrasing.

The schedule for the workshops are now available at the Writing Center.

Mark, a Writing Center tutor, said that the center tends to get pretty busy during midterm and finals week. He suggests to stop by a week prior to avoid lengthy wait times. Students will need a current student ID, a USB drive to save work on and the instructor's assignment when visiting the center.

IT Returns

By Gabriella Carrazco Reporter Horror fans rejoice! The novel “IT” by Stephen King was remade again into a movie that is in theaters now! The film takes place in the small town of Derry Maine, during the summer of 1988. Where a group of kids, who so lovingly dubbed themselves “The Losers Club”, stumble upon the horror of a lifetime. While searching for the missing younger brother of one of their own, they find something much more malice instead. As if puberty and the challenges of bullies were not enough to deal with.

Enter Pennywise “The Dancing Clown”, who apart from having the element of ultimate creepiness from being a clown, is also a shape shifting inter-dimensional demon who personifies the fears of any and all of his victims. Will “The Losers Club” defeat the demon and face their fears or will they all float, in this coming of age rated R horror film.

In the 1990’s mini-series Pennywise was played by Tim Curry.

Curry did a nightmarish job though that seems to be the only good part about the original. In this new

sion, the kids performances are believable and humorous. Which adds to the suspense when the

adult situations such as racists attacks, child abuse, and some terrible town bullies. The bullies cut

by Bill Skarsgård. Skarsgård in no way mimics the performance of Curry but instead creates his own version, and his performance is just as good if not better. That’s not all that has changed in this new ver-

It’d be a mistake to miss this film. The first mini-series left Curry’s Pennywise a permanent fixture in pop culture. However, and here comes the spoiler alert, it is rated R and rightly so dealing with

some of the kids, and try to run one of them down with a car. Overall this is a great film with memorable characters who warm the screen and others that chill the room. I’d say this is an 8 out of 10 and it leaves me hopeful for the much talked about sequel.

Coming Soon, Charlotte’s Web

By Megan Dykstra Reporter The Fall 2017 semester has started and that means the Victor Valley College Theatre Arts Department is in pre-production for another play. Last semester was treated to the hilarious comedic stylings of Spamalot. This semester the Performance Arts Center (PAC) will be home to a production of Charlotte’s Web. Though performances are not starting until October, faculty in the Theatre Arts Department have already started working on the newest production.

Charlotte’s Web will come to life on the stage in the PAC very soon and students and teachers alike are working hard to bring this beloved classic to life. Readers

might remember ‘Charlotte’s Web’ as one of their favorite books from their childhood or it’s ranking as the “best-selling children’s book of all time” by Publishers Weekly.

Charlotte’s Web tells the story of Wilbur, a pig in danger of being killed by his owner, and his friendship with a spider named Charlotte. When Charlotte hears of the danger her new friend is in, she begins to write messages on her webs in praise of Wilbur in hopes that his owner will keep him alive.

How ever you remember the classic tale, there will be something for both adults and children as there is with the famous book.

Though performances do not start for another month, the audience can expect yet another delightful performance by the cast and crew at Victor Valley College.

Directed by Professor Ed Heaberlin and adapted from E.B. White’s beloved book by Joseph Robinette, Charlotte’s Web is yet another play to bring the whole family to.

Performances start on October sixth in the PAC Proscenium Theatre and continue until October fifteenth. Shows start at 2:30 p.m.

on the eighth and the fifteenth and at 7:30 on the sixth, seventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth.

Tickets will be available for purchase online at VVC Tix and will be available at the front of the theatre the night of performance. Prices have yet to be announced.

Death Note, The Death of Movie?

By Tyler Wolfe Reporter Originally a Japanese manga, “Death Note”, directed by Adam Wingard, was adapted into a live action film released on August 25, 2017. Due to the adaption to wide released film, many had high hopes.

Released on Netflix, fans and critics found themselves wanting more, and that the adaption didn't deliver what many fans of the anime and manga expected.

“Adam Wingard sharply executes violence, jabs of humor and, in particular, a fascination with the seductiveness of evil, but the film feels rushed and constricted” Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times stated.

Death Note displayed excellent action scenes, along with many opportunities to make the audience laugh and connect with the characters. The film felt as if it fell short when it came to in depth storytelling and keeping concepts simple enough for the audience to easily grasp

and remember. One of the characters, Ryuk, had an interesting idea behind him but I felt as if he lacked depth and multiple dimensions. While

lacking depth in some characters, all had distinct personalities that keep things interesting throughout the movie.

Light, a young high school student discovers a supernatural notebook that has deadly powers. He can kill anyone he wishes simply by writing their full name within its pages. Intoxicated with his new power, he begins his crusade to “cure” the earth of its evil doers and those he doesn't deem fit to live.

After testing his power on numerous

bullies and the murder of his mother, Light becomes hunted by a detective only known as “L.” After many close calls and run-ins with the FBI, Light and his accomplice begin to struggle with the problem of how to properly use the power of life and death. The story comes to a conclusion with Light waking up from a coma with mysterious figure at his side who comments, “Humans are so interesting.”

Given the mixed reviews and negative comments critiques gave the film, some still enjoyed Death Note and many new fans were brought to the franchise to enjoy the movie, anime, or manga! I would give the movie a 5 out of 10 total rating, it was entertaining but lacked enough depth to make me want to come back and watch again. One question that Death Note leaves all of us with is, what would you do if you had the power over life and death ?

Rocky Horror Picture Show

By Cuit Diaz Reporter The Rocky Horror Picture Show is coming to Victor Valley College (VVC)! The college’s own Off Broadway Performing Arts Club will be performing The Rocky Horror Picture Show on October 20, 21, 27, and 28 at the Black Box Theater in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The show starts at midnight, but the night will start off at 11 p.m. with what Jessica Kilgore only describes as “Virgin Games.”

will be checked at the door.

Bobbie Sotomayor, the director of this production, describes The Rocky Horror Picture Show as a “ great time” and “... a place those who don’t feel accepted can feel accepted.”

The Off Broadway Club has been working on this production for some time. Sotomayor states they have “been working on it diligently and really going for it.” Angelica Harper, who plays Janet in the production, says her favorite part about being in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is “being able to become the

character and see her transformation from, like, someone who’s really subtle and kind of scared of the world into someone who just puts herself out there and steps out of her comfort zone.” Frank Staggs, who plays Rocky, describes his experience with this production as full of soreness as he quotes, “ever since I got the part I started working out a lot more, so my workout routine has been extremely painful.”

The production has a Facebook page people can follow if they search “Rocky Horror Picture Show at VVC.” A previous attendee of VVC’s pro-

duction of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Angel Mullins, stated, “The VVC cast did a great job!!

The pre-show was hilarious too! Loved it!” The Rocky Horror Picture Show stars Brad (played by Alex Malan) and Janet as they discover the mansion of Dr. Frank-NFurter, a house full of madness and wildcards. Interested attendees are highly encouraged to come dressed up and become part of the fun. This is an experience people definitely don’t want to miss.

Hope For Another Championship

The Victor Valley College Ram’s football team has won two of the last three championships. In 2016, the Rams lost in overtime of the championship game. Head Football Coach, Dave Hoover, says the team has lofty goals for this season.

In addition to trying to win as many games as possible, and ultimately winning the championship, coach Hoover says he would love for his athletes to graduate from VVC and get scholarships to the next level of football. One of their biggest challenges for this season according to Coach Hoover is, “We’re just a very

young team. I think we only have 4 starters returning from last year’s team, so we have to grow up fast… Our potential is through the roof it’s just going to come down to when we decide to realize it.” The success of the Rams football team will come down to some of the key players on the roster.

On the offensive side of the ball, Hoover highlighted all-league fullback Sean White while also mentioning two of his quarterbacks Nolan Brammer and Trey Cox. Hoover said, “This is a quarterback driven offense so if we’re going to succeed, those kids have to play well.” Hoover stated that key players on defense include all league defensive lineman Kendall Blakely, and

defensive backs Jean Bazille and Duanne Jones. Coach Hoover stated, “Anything less than a championship will fall short of our goal.”

It will be a challenge for the young Rams football team to meet their high expectations, they have competed in the championship game for the past three years. There is a lot of hope that another championship is in store for the 2017 VVC football team.

Special Olympics from page 1 Through the Special Olympics, these athletes are building their confidence in embracing the beauty in their uniqueness. When asked what her favorite part of volleyball practice is, Sarah, a Team Rogue member, said, “Hanging out with her friends” as she eagerly went back to working on her volleyball spike.

Each player is engaged and fully participating in their volleyball practice. Victor Valley College wishes them all the best of luck, as they prepare for their first game September 30th at the University of Southern California.

The Special Olympics is open to all ages, regardless of student enrollment and has sports training year round. The Special Olympics Mojave River League is always accepting volunteers, donations and coaches for all sports. To ap-

ply, community members can contact Melanie Dube-Price at mdubeprice @sosc.org. Locals are also encouraged to participate in Rogue’s upcoming fundraisers. October 9th the High Desert’s police force will be waiting tables at both Red

Robin locations, to fundraise money for the Special Olympics.

On October 7th the Special Olympics will also be hosting a haunted house. These are the various means by which community members can be involved, and spread kindness to the diverse individuals within society.
