VVC Selects New President By Brandon Valdovinos Reporter

Victor Valley College’s Board of Trustees elects Dr. Daniel Walden, a Los Angeles City College executive, as the next superintendent/president for Victor Valley College. He won from a list of candidates that was narrowed down to three finalists. A forum was held October 22 and 23 where the finalists had a chance to speak and answer questions asked. His family ties to the desert and his drive to be a part of the local community secured his nomination as a candidate. “I've know n about this college for many years. My family, both on my wife's side and mine, live up here. Some of them are graduates and some

are attending right now. I feel a real strong connection to this college,” Stated Dr. Walden. He has always passed by the college when driving on Bear Valley Road and thought “If

that presidency ever became open, I would like to apply for it.” His focus is to help the community and the local students in their journey of success. “It’s not about the position, it's about the job. With the job comes great responsibility, and humility.” In past jobs, he was very involved with the community and engaged with the businesses and community leaders. He has worked with a board system and brings all this experience with him to apply this energy he has toward VVC. “I know what it's like to work with the board, see how they operate, and form relationships with them.” Dr. Walden has operated student service programs where he has interacted with students

to help them such as counseling for example. Coming from a background where school wasn't a part of the family, Dr. Walden had no support and worked his way to where he is now. He values those students that are disadvantaged and also students of color. He in the past worked with support programs, such as equity for all, which help students reach the level of those who do not have the same problems. “I put on equity glasses. I look at my world that I walk and live in with equity glasses. It's not a about diversity, but giving people the opportunity that they perhaps may not have had,” stated Dr. Walden The success of students and providing opportunities for those who need them creates the ability for Continued on page 4… (SAC), building 44, between 3 and 5PM. Since VVC was first founded, there have always been community outreach programs in place to assist those in financial need during the holidays. However, it wasn’t until the late 1990s that these multiple programs were consolidated into a single entity, lovingly entitled Lights of Love. The idea, inspired by VVC’s Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE), a resource on campus aimed at assisting parent students who exhibit financial need.
