Just west of the Blue Mountains lies Portland, the 'Town that Built Sydney.' Central to that town is the state heritage listed Portland Cementworks site, a place of significant cultural and economic importance to the region for over 100 years. Since going out of operation in the 1990s, the Cementworks site has sat vacant and became fenced off from Town. Now under new ownership, the site's future is looking bright. Roberts Day was brought on to create a short-term and long-term activation and development strategy for the Site. Through in-depth research, community consultation and best practice benchmarking, RD used a place-led process to create a framework for the site's future change.
Already, some of the short-term plans, notably murals, farmers markets, camping and hiking, are being put into action.
