Kigali Marriott’s Chef Ramadhan

Gorilla Highlands Silverchef Winner 2018 Cover Story

R

amadhan Sindayigaya, a professional chef at the Kigali Marriott Hotel, emerged the winner of 2018 Gorilla Highlands Silver Chef, a competition that attracted 16 other high ranking chefs from Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda.

Organised by Gorilla Highlands, the 4th edition of the Silver Chef competition was held at Kigali Marriott. The chefs were required to prepare succulent dishes from the ingredients provided. The jury tasted each dish and declared Mr. Sindayigaya Ramadhan as the winner.

Chef Rama as he is widely known was the first runner up at the same competition in 2017. He draws his inspiration from his aunt who has traveled the world as a chef.

“Growing up with my grandmother, she would assign me small tasks that involved cooking and over time, I had mastered basic food preparation skills at home, “ he says.

“My aunt who is a renowned chef also encouraged me to consider cooking as a career. I became passionate with everything about food and would volunteer to cook on special occassions.”

Chef Rama who specialises in Italian cuisine at Cucina Restaurant, had expressed confidence to win the competition adding that besides the appreciation accorded to the winner, the competition also helps them showcase their abilities and build up their portfolio.

And all of us at Kigali Marriott, we celebrate his outstanding skills.

Umuganura The word Umuganura can be translated as ‘First-Fruits Festival’ in the traditional Rwandan culture. It literally means tasting the first fruits of the harvest.

A charmed and energetic waiter comes in to take my order, but I am curious to know what’s the difference between a cocktail and a mocktail.

After a brief explanation from him, I get to understand what sets each other apart. Simply, a cocktail is a mixed alcoholic drink either as one type of alcohol with soft drinks, or as multiple alcoholic drinks with juices.

Mocktails on the other hand are any mixed drinks that do not contain alcohol. The name “mocktail” is derived from the word “mock” meaning to “mimic”.

On your next pop-in at Iriba Bar, ask for a mojito or Icunga bourbon cocktail, and if you prefer nonalcoholic options be sure to try lemon mint, limeade or other refreshing drinks on the menu.

igali Marriott female staff joined Women for Women International in Kayonza District to share personal experiences and inspire women who are under training in different fields.

Our hotel which is a flagship of the Marriott International, has already provided jobs to 26 women since 2016, under a partnership with Women for Women International an organization that empowers women.

Some of the staff who work at Kigali Marriott shared testimonies that rotated around the hardships they went through prior to joining the hotel and how their lives have quickly changed after getting descent employment.

Marthe Mukambonera, 58, who works is in housekeeping, said she was formerly frustrated by staying at home and doing chores while her husband was the only bread winner for the family of four children who live in Gikondo, Kicukuro District.

“Joining Marriott has been beneficial. I have undergone intensive training that have sharpened my skills. With an income, I can now support my husband. We started building a

house and we are almost finishing construction, and this will be a good and descent place for my children to live,” she said.

English is the major medium of communication at Kigali Marriott Hotel as the hotel hosts international guests and Adalie Umutoniwase had an inspiring story to tell.

“When I joined, I could hardly speak or understand any English word, but thankfully, I attended weekly classes organized by our Human Resource department and I have improved in my communication”.

Yulia Bogdanova, the Human Resource Director at Kigali Marriott Hotel who led the delegation to Kayonza, said the Women for Women graduates are among the best performing members of staff at the hotel.

She encouraged other women to save some money out of their earnings, have self-esteem and work hard.

“You have to keep up hope for a better life and inspire others through sheer dedication,” she added.
