New Horizons Study Abroad

Introduction What is Study Abroad with ABS? Most undergraduate programmes at Aberdeen Business School include the opportunity for a period of study abroad with one of our carefully chosen International partners. The study abroad period is an integrated part of your course - so all of the credits you achieve at our partner institution count towards your RGU degree -and without any loss of time. Most students are eligible and entry to the programme depends upon your academic record so far and your motivation to make the best of your time abroad. There are 2 major types of programmes, Erasmus and non-Erasmus.

WHY SHOULD I GO ABROAD? Going abroad to study or work could be one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of your course. The experience, new friends, a different country and its culture and language - these, and many other factors, can make it an unforgettable experience!

Erasmus is the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students and is part of the Life Long Learning Programme. With Erasmus you could study for 3-12 months in another European country and receive a grant to help you with the costs. You may be able to apply to go abroad for a minimum of 1 semester and a maximum of 2 semesters (depending upon the course you are taking), and you can take part in it even if you don’t speak a foreign language! Usually this will take place in year two or three. There is also an Erasmus programe which supports placements in Europe - grants are available and it is possible to undertake a study abroad period and a placement within the Erasmus programme. Unfortunately, the scheme is only open to students who are EU citizens or have permanent resident status.

WHERE CAN I GO? Where you go depends on the course you are studying. Each participating course has its own partner Universities in different countries. Most of the courses have more than one partner University so that you can choose which programme is most suitable for you.

International students may be able to take part in the NonErasmus programme (along with EU citizens) with our partners usually outside Europe, subject to the normal visa regulations. For this exchange there is no grant support. Many of our partners operate a fee-waiver scheme which means that you continue to pay your fees to RGU as usual (e.g. by SAAS funding or international fees), and will just pay costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence in the host country. A small number of our partners do charge fees and this is noted in the brochure. All of the partners in the non-Erasmus programme teach in English.

“It really is something anyone can do and should be taken up while the opportunity is there” Deborah O’Mullane BA(Hons) International Hospitality Management.

This brochure illustrates the various partners ABS has. Each partner institution has its own section to give you a clear overview of what your possibilities are and each destination has a short introduction to the country and area where the partner school is based so that you can decide where you want to have the time of your life! Currently the courses which include the opportunity for foreign study are: BA(Hons) Management with Marketing BA(Hons) Management with HRM BA(Hons) Management with Economics BA(Hons) Management with Finance BA(Hons) Retail Management BA(Hons) International Tourism Management BA(Hons) International Hospitality Management BA(Hons) International Business Management

It enhances your CV as many employers like to have graduates with some international experience so students who undertake such programmes will widen their employment opportunities after their course.
