Lupinizam by Stephan Lupino Stephan Lupino was born in former Yugoslavia and grew up in Varaždin, once the capital city and still an important cultural center. He travelled to London via Rome in his early twenties to pursue a career in karate as a champion black belt instructor and bodyguard before arriving in New York. Besides his involvement in martial arts, he soon found himself in demand as a fashion model and appeared in a number of campaigns for Italian and American Vogue, representing the Valentino and Versace brands among others. In parallel, Lupino studied acting at Stellar Adler Conservatory - graduates include Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty and Robert de Niro -. Here he met and subsequently became a close companion of Deborah Turberville, the renowned fashion photographer credited with transforming fashion photography into avant-garde art.1 Deborah lent Lupino his first camera and, a quick learner, he won his first commission with Details magazine, one of the foremost avant-garde magazines at that time. His ability to capture intimate portraits of his subjects and the physical intensity and visual grittiness of his photos became ‘Lupino’ trademarks. His work has appeared in Vogue, Photo, Zoom, Stern and multiple art magazines.

Lupino’s work, however, only comes to life in large spaces and galleries where his art is expressed through film, in over-size paintings, and in monumental sculptures. He uses metal grinding and polishing and welding machines to create gashes and layers. He paints and sculpts with his fingers, daubing multiple layers of acrylic to bring his work to life.

He frames his subjects in grand scale on over-size canvases, ancient timbers and sculpted bronze to create a powerful tension between the medium and the message. His work is the product of raw energy and life force, a triumph of effort and beauty where a combination of wood or metal can be turned inside out to expose the womb of the sculpture, to show the metaphysical darkness of the subject at its core.

Lupino has coined the term ‘Lupinizam’ to define the recurrent themes and motifs at the core of his work; the struggle to represent the fragile beauty in nature and human existence, the unsettling contemplation of the afterlife, the ebb and flow of war and peace, and the spectrum of human behavior and sexuality with its concomitant joy, guilt and despair. Inspiration and influences include the biblical and literary themes of Paradise Lost and other western religious symbols, the concept of redemption, and motifs from African

Lupino was also a regular contributor to Playboy magazine where his artistic approach to glamour photography raised the bar for sophistication. He also works on ‘pro bono’ cause projects where he captures a natural warmth and spontaneity in his subjects - witness the joyful portraits of the ‘Down’s Syndrome’ collection and ‘My Angels’, a more somber project which portrays a collective mood of hope and despair of terminally-ill children in a cancer ward.

Throughout the eighties, Lupino’s photography played a dominant role in the New York underground art culture. At night, he would set up his makeshift studio in two of New York’s hippest nightclubs - A ‘ rea’ and ‘The World’. There, he expertly captured the scene and mood of the celebrities and artists of the time.2 photographing an endless stream of subjects - night clubbers and celebrities, artists and socialites such as The Ramones, Malcolm McClaren, Billy Idol, Joe Strummer, Frank Zappa, Grace Jones, Brian Ferry, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp and Malcolm Forbes.

Besides photography, a strong influence on Lupino’s development as an artist can be traced to the time he spent in the company of some of the most influential commercial pop artists of the era. These included Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Harding. These artists pioneered the graffiti pop art movement with artful doodles (Haring), iconic art referencing and the subversion of popular culture (Warhol), and emotionally powerful, aggressive and highly personal pieces (Basquiat). Their work fueled a boom in the NeoExpressionist commercial stream of art which has proved to be of lasting impact.

Lupino absorbed the creative zeitgeist of the time but it was a different trigger which promoted a shift in the medium in which he chose to realize his visions. It came not from the streets of New York, but from his homeland. When war broke out in the Balkans in the early nineties, Lupino felt compelled to return to Croatia (formerly part of Yugoslavia), the country of his birth, to play a part in supporting his homeland and documenting the atrocities. The subsequent horrors, brutality and randomness of life and death left a deep impression and, combined with the experience of his New York days, he channeled these raw emotions to express his internal angst, not only on film but through painting and sculpture.

A period of intense creativity began at the turn of the millennium with works centered on images related to emptiness, lost innocence, decay and suffering. His creations are certainly not pop art. They are more closely aligned to a branch of Neo-Expressionism exemplified by artists such as Julian Schnabel and Francesco Clemente. There is a brutish sexuality about Lupino’s figures, as well as an ugliness and emptiness. Suffering, death and damnation are common themes. Emotionless faceless figures look past our gaze. Couples embrace and sway dispassionately. Dancers are locked in a rhythmic but sterile ritual. There is a tension between the sexuality of his faintly erotic subjects and a sense of the inevitability of a moral and physical decay.

Lupino also makes gently mocking references to folklore, organised religion (like Schnabel), the politics of power and corruption and other cultural icons of our time. These are seen

in series of works such as A ‘ pocalypse’, ‘The Death of Lucifer’ and ‘Cataclysm’ which rework biblical stories and Dantean images of Hell.

The paradoxical dilemma of existence - transitory beauty, mortality and an afterlife of damnation (influenced by a Christian ethos) - plays out on the canvas or in the sculpted exhibits. Lupino’s pieces are at first sight familiar but on closer inspection, the inner core of the work reveals a complex symbiosis where elements and emotions are polarized.

Lupino paints and sculpts sensual, often sexualized figures devoid of emotion. He manages to fuse beauty with the ugliness of the human condition. There is a palpable yet unsettling sexuality about his figures, a disdain and emptiness as they stand or sit in relief against the backdrop of an indifferent universe. The artist also takes familiar iconic art and reinterprets it with his own twist. A metal bust is charged with sexual tension but, like the Venus de Milo, it is not quite whole. There are multiple interpretations of the Madonna and Child - in portrait photography, in painting and in sculptures - where a mother stares down at her child in a mixture of detached affection and bewilderment.

For newcomers to Lupinizam, it is best to resist the urge to over-examine Lupino’s creations.

Savor first the juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness, of sensuality and despair, of life and death. Sense the apocalyptic foreboding, the impending disaster and at the same time, note the resignation and dignified acceptance of his subjects. His work is both a celebration of life and a quest for redemption in his soulless vision of a dark world set in a darker universe.

The best way to engage with the art of Stephan Lupino is to see it in person, to feel it, smell it, fully immerse yourself in the experience of it. Lupino’s art radiates a magnificent power that profoundly impacts thorough any medium.

Stephan Lupino is an international artist of Croatian and French ancestry; this diverse background is the source from which he draws the power that radiates through his art.

Walk through this virtual gallery and bask in the heat of that power. Begin with Lupino’s majestic thrones, hewn from ancient oak and forged iron, representing Cleopatra at the fall of an ancient civilization, the bloody betrayal of Julius Caesar, the magnificence of King Arthur, traveling forward through time to the throne of Napoleon, shaken by revolution, to the British throne and the contemporary pop art imagery of Mao Zedong’s communism and Tito’s Yugoslavia that was.

The symbols and mysterious inscriptions used on these remarkable yet somehow functional pieces of art hold the key to Lupinos’ understanding of the world. A feeling of power tempered by a quiet discomfort and a sense of the impermanence of life permeate the atmosphere created by each of these pieces. The urge to experience one of these massive, heavy, high thrones and assume the rule they represent is strong.

Beyond the throne room is a room that represents the intention of relaxation, yet offers only hard chairs set around solid chess tables topped with Lupino’s handsculpted chess pieces. Sense the game of armies, people and states silently playing out on these magnificent tables and reflected in the huge mirrors that surround this battle. The sculptors’ hand can be felt in each minute detail, the elegant craftsmanship of each individual piece. Every item within this room tells a story, an epic poem, an invisible confession, the story of adventures undertaken. Subtle messages of eroticism, each piece is visually and tangibly exciting. If you were able to satisfy your curiosity, to actually settle into one of these chairs and realize its comfort, you would be rewarded with an unexpected sense of satisfaction. But you would also experience the desire to touch, to run your fingers over the tactile creations, to read the transmitted messages of history.

Continue your exploration, an alley of the crosses awaits; wooden and metal signs that represent the sculptor’s confessional, his search for redemption. Crosses of broken

swords, sharp daggers and circular saw halos reflect irony, beauty and despair.

In the midst of this, the artists’ humanitarian photographic work is represented in his ‘choir’ of angels. Startling images of children, gravely ill or developmentally suffering, deep lakes of tears mingling in their eyes together with hope and faith, bear witness to Lupino’s life and honesty as an artist.

The alley leads to tables shackled with heavy chains and statues of cog wheels, sculptural installations with menacing messages and others covered in cipher messages leading one to wonder about the artists’ feelings toward the former state of Yugoslavia, represented in the next room in an open glass coffin. In this coffin, there are the things that people worshipped: a flag, a coat of arms, pioneer caps and scarves that children wore when they vowed to ‘’defend their country forever;’’ relics of a buried ideology and lost ideals There is a rhythm to Lupino’s unprecedented work that is loud and glorious in its beauty. There is one element of Lupino’s work that does not come through in this virtual tour, or in any coffee table book or printed depiction of his work and that is the sheer enormity, the visual impact of the grandeur, of the sculptures, the paintings, the painted sculptures that represent the artist’s newest explorations, the colors and the textures. But that is the case whenever you reduce a room full of art to a standard page. When you are surrounded by the work represented in these virtual images up close and personal, prepare to be awed and dazzled, regardless of how much you have studied these images here. It is impossible not to be.
