These units , although popular in medieval and modern times , similar to what is seen in many other settlements of Calabria , Apulia , Basilicata and Sicily, sometimes have quite a few similarities with the funeral caves found in Cozzo Piano Grande Serra d ' Aiello, dated to the middle Bronze Age ( XVI - half of the thirteenth century BC). In the Middle Ages , the need to defend and control the coastline has affected the birth and development of the settlements, so much so that one of the main features of this narrow strip of land is to be dotted with fortifications developed organically from Angevin age but with significant pre-existing Norman age .

The settlement of Cleto is dominated by the robust structure of the castle built in the second half of the thirteenth century at the behest of Charles I of Anjou. However, very recent investigations conducted within the fort were allowed to assume an attendance area already in the Byzantine age - Norman (X - XI cent.) . Pietramala had walls complemented by round towers still clearly recognizable in the village , as well as in the castle , you can see the signs refined expressions buildings . The village, despite some restoration work, is being phased out and the highest concentration of empty homes now occurs mainly in the area at the foot of the fort . In the sandstone outcrops , both in the historical center and in the surrounding area , there are numerous caves and cavities that highlight the complexity of the core rock cletese . Many of these caves were until a few years ago still used by farmers as animal shelters or depots for agricultural equipment. However, despite the frequent reuse , and the partial destruction wrought during the work of " redevelopment " of the historic center performed in the 90s in many cases are still recognizable signs of the oldest uses.
