NOCERA TERINESE, FALERNA AND GIZZERIA: SEA AND MOUNTAINS NEAR THE GULF OF LAMEZIA TERME

2013

Nocera Terinese, Falerna and Gizzeria: sea and mountains near the Gulf of Lamezia Terme The villages of Nocera Terinese, also known as Tirinese, Falerna and Gizzeria, lie next to each other in the stretch of the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Catanzaro and each of them consists of a part that directly overlooks the sea and an inner part that goes up to the mountain called Mount Mancuso which reaches 1327 meters above sea level and is equipped with picnic areas in the woods that cover it. In essence, in a few tens of square kilometers in extent, in all three villages, you can enjoy both the sea and the mountains as well as hilly areas which have magnificent views towards the sea below.

The three villages are located on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the narrowest part of Calabria where the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas are joined by the road known as the "two seas" long about 35 km. The coast here is sandy, and in some places very wide. The hill offers generous olive groves and vineyards, both in inaccessible areas in the various terraces reminiscent of the various geological periods that this area has experienced, and that you meet as you climb up the mountain. From several points in the upper area of the mountain you can enjoy a beautiful view to the sea which, especially in the later part of Gizzeria, offers the opportunity to see the gulf in its entirety. Generally you can see the island of Stromboli, one of the Aeolian volcanic islands, but when the horizon is clear and limpid landscape is completed with the presence of the other islands and sometimes even with Sicilian volcano Etna, the latter perhaps snowy, painting an extraordinary scenery.

Interesting then the natural aspect of the district, for the various habitats which offers visitors. Among the areas to be mentioned is definitely the lake "The Vote" Gizzeria, the mountain with its vegetation, the long beach of the whole territory, wildlife and bird species present in marine areas in the mountains. Agriculture is an important economy of the villages with local products such as the famous onions known as red onions of Tropea and tomatoes of Belmonte which are also produced in Nocera Terinese, the red potato of Istia (small area in in the upper Falerna), many type of vegetables that grow at different heights and during different periods of the year, salami, pickles, wine and oil. Some of these productions have reached a good level of quality and quantity so as to create entrepreneurial in some cases also important. Accommodation is varied and ranges from grand hotels to holiday homes through guesthouses, cottages, and recent Bed & Breakfast. The special conditions of wind technically called " thermal " characterize some parts of the marine Gizzeria that in recent years has become internationally known for windsurfing and kitesurfing, this is a new sport that allows you to travel over the water resting on a tablet

and towed by kites with great variety of designs and colors that will brighten the sky above. In Gizzeria have been created on purpose beach services wich provide services for the practice of this sport.

The three villages are showing a moderate increase in tourism in recent years due to an improvement in the services offered. In particular, has been increased the level of quality of accommodation, the number of strands in the sea, and has been enriched the restoration of excellence. All three countries have a beautiful promenade, the beaches equipped , children's playground and several harmhouse and quality restaurants, some of which are mentioned on national specialized guides . The geographical position of the three villages, neighbors to the motorway and expressway of the two seas, then easily allows to make a series of trips out of town notes in not very distant as Amantea, Pizzo Calabro, Caminia and Soverato, Isola Capo Rizzuto, Capo Vaticano Scilla and Tropea and then again, Praia a Mare and the island of Dino, Sila Village Palumbo, and that of Camigliatello and Lorica. Some of these trips are offered by local operators. This small guide has been written for tourists who have decided to spend their holidays in this part of Calabria , hoping that it will be a useful tool to enrich their vacation through the knowledge of the places, but also the products and services that this particular area of the territory of Calabria offers. But it was also written for the citizens of this territory, so that they can be proud of the place in which they live and in the hope that more and more involved in the process of exploitation of the same. Bacause of my limited knowledge I wasn’t able to go further in this work, so any contribution will be appreciated for future editions. To carry out this guide I used the most disparate sources and I apologize right now with what I have failed to mention. Where indicated, I'll be happy to do it in future editions . Roberto Vescio

Nocera Terinese Nocera Terinese - A bit of history .. The territory of Nocera Terinese is located 20 minutes from the airport of Lamezia Terme and in the immediate vicinity of the motorway (A3) Falerna. It is among the largest in the district and stretches from the sea to the mountain reaching mount Mancuso (1327 m)

6

The old urban core is placed between 250-280 meters. above sea level, on a small promontory in the middle of the green valleys and narrow at the bottom of which run two rushing streams. From these deep grooves eroded by natural waters breezes that blow cool air during warm periods while the mountains that surround the valley are holding back the cold winds of winter. Nocera Terinese was always appreciated for the unique climatic conditions and for the wealth of fresh and clear springs. There are reports that the Bali family of S.Eufemia (the land was owned by the Knights of Malta) used to spend holidays in their palace of Nocera. The religious influence of the town is marked by the presence of numerous churches in its territory (only six in the urban core) and three convents (Minor Conventual, Capuchin , Augustinian). Its historical record dates back to the fifth century: the geographer Stephen of Byzantium

recalls that the historian Philistus Syracuse was already talking about Nucrion or Nuceria of Brezi. The archaeologist P. Bears recognized prehistoric traces from pre-Hellenic character of the plateau called " Tirena " on which focused the attention of the archaeological superintendence to identify the city buried there: Temesa, Terina or Nucrion? The historical significance of the area of Nocera is deduced by the act by which Frederick II of Hohestaufen mistook the feud with that of Nocera Nicastro act which emphasizes how the two estates enjoyed equal social and economic prestige. But his past can be seen even if only remains of great cultural interest: the Capuchin Monastery, which was built in 1581 on the ruins of the Norman castle of which still reads part of the perimeter wall , majestically overlooking the village itself as connoted essential for the identification and panoramic landscape of the country, the Mother Church of St. John the Baptist richly decorated with stucco and decorated and retains many ancient statues as well as paintings of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, some attributed to Pasqualetti, the wooden statue of the PietĂ that of " Sorrows " (sec. XVII ), which presents the compositional scheme of Michelangelo and is celebrated during Holy Week with the rite of "Vattienti". It is venerated in the church of which by the way is adorned with a seventeenthcentury marble altar green Calabria, the Church of St. Francis altars with tuffaceous of pure Renaissance style triumphal arch ( already counted among the national monuments) forms ventilating Arab-Norman engraved with indecipherable writing, it rests on two octagonal columns with capitals decorated with motifs basket of fruit and leaves and has stands in the shape of the foot and leonine unusual bas-reliefs placed between the columns and the masonry.

7

There are two moments of great social gathering: Holy Week, which takes on the characteristic traits of great historical, cultural and religious content for the "Flagellants", better known as the "Vattienti", whose practice dates back to 1777. The other moment rich in social meaning is the religious feast of the patron saint, St. John the Baptist, which takes place June 24, with a local fair that soul for a few days the country. The first Sunday after Easter is the feast of the Annunciation.

Nocera Terinese - The Old Terina, the history of the city and its findings Nocera Terinese takes its name from the old town of Terina founded by a Roman colony with the intent to control this area of the Tyrrhenian Sea. According to the latest findings that have emerged from archaeological surveys in the territory of Nocera Terinese was placed , since the fourth century BC, the city of Magna Graecia Temesa, which was probably formed by a confederation of villages and gravitated in the area between the rivers Savuto and Oliva. The ancient Temesa was to be built on the vast plateau, about 30 acres, called Plan Tirena, located between the rivers and the Great Savuto a short distance from the sea

15

The huge necropolis was discovered at the edge of the motorway during work modernization of the Salerno - Reggio Calabria and now you do not yet know the exact number of graves. The tombs are located near one another , many of them are open , others closed. Inside the cemetery are recognized trails, paths , steps and the central monument . Other tombs , then , were found in the area near the necropolis : open and closed but all without any enclosure. The same protection that also lacks the many crates of artifacts remained in the cemetery or in its vicinity. The recent discovery opens many historical issues . The Plan Tirena plateau a few hundred meters from the sea and bordered by two rivers , the Great and Savuto , is regarded by historians as the site that housed the town of Terina, famous Greek colony . The first risen to contradict these, proposed by major historical Italian and Calabria , was the Frenchman Franรงois Lenormant saying that Terina stood at St. Euphemia. This debate gave rise to some doubts that the new discovery could clarify . In July 2007, Adriano Macchione, connoisseur of Nocera Terinese, where he published a volume illustrating in detail the errors of Bears and Lenormant, contradicting the claims of those who wanted to Terina in Lametino. Lenormant thicket explained that when he came to the Nocera was shown the plan from a nearby hill, and said that he could not be the site that housed Terina because according to sources it was surrounded by two rivers. Instead, the two streams were flowing and still undisturbed. The assumption that there was a necropolis in the area, however, was already advanced

Capitolo: Nocera Terinese - The Old Terina, the history of the city and its findings

In numerous books of past centuries modern archaeologists had already found the existence of a necropolis at the northern end of the Plan of Tirena , near the town of Nocera Terinese, so that the territory of the checks were organized . Today was finally brought to light the above cemetery in an area considered by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and the Ministry for the Environment and Territory enormous and undoubted historical and archaeological value .

In Nocera Terinese there are so many restaurateurs operating at various levels with reliability, simplicity, and above all maintaining the traditional hospitality of the territory. Hospitality which translates into the final request that Gennaro of restaurant "Le Arcate" asks to customers who are about to ask for the bill: "Have you enjoyed it?" Or that after submitting the bill, which is always reasonable, asks, "have I treated you well?". Because, as is the case for a guest who comes to visit you at home, the most important thing is that you who must feel like at home. The same applies to Pasquale of "Pizzeria Ristorante Golfo" which is located in the area of Nocera called "Villaggio del Golfo", which before the client goes off he offers him a local bitter or a limoncello and celebrates sincerely with him (we recommend to start the meal with their traditional starter “antipasto misto di mare”).

Nocera Terinese - Babylandia: games for children It is located near the waterfront of Nocera this children's playground which is also open in the evening. The games range from inflatables to jumping net, the so-called "jumping", with a small train and rides for children.

The area is enclosed and fenced, as well as some of the games are internal, for example, or bouncy, so parents can leave the kids to play in closed areas of the various games while sitting to relax and have a drink at the beach bar inside. The kids will get tired enogh to be ready for a nice nap accompanied by deep dreams. Babylandia is located near the roundabout which is more or less in the center of the promenade down the main street of arrival on the waterfront. Kindness and availability characterize the management of this small amusement park for children. We recommend it to families with children staying nearby to pleasantly spend some afternoon or in evenings after dinner.

Nocera Terinese - The cultivation and production of onion The village has vast areas planted with vegetables industrious farmers. The cultivation of particular value in Nocera Terinese is the type of onion now known internationally as "Tropea Red Onion." It is not uncommon to find farmers around the streets of the country, to offer their products. Products that color their baskets of the colors of nature and among them certainly no shortage of onions from the special taste that are produced here. We recommend that you also consume these fresh onions, maybe a salad to enrich those tomatoes too special quality called the "tomatoes of Belmonte."

23

In these areas, the bulb has found an ideal microclimate. In fact, the sweetness of this bulb depends not only on the variety , mild climate and sandy soils that are located close to the sea along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. In the early `900 Tropea onion abandon the cultivation of small gardens and kitchen gardens to go to considerable extensions in 1929 with the aqueduct of the Valley Ruffa that allows you to irrigate and have higher yields and quality improvement. The first organized production in the territories of Tropea, Parghelia, Briatico and Zambrone , Ricadi and the promontory of Capo Vaticano, was later added, with strong momentum in the coastal area north of the Gulf of St. Euphemia detectable between the towns of Gizzeria and Lombards, with particular development between Amantea Campora S an Giovanni Nocera Terinese . Today, as then , the red onion is present in family gardens as great extensions in the countryside , feeding and in local dishes and traditional recipes , involving hundreds of small companies engaged in the entire supply chain . The sowing takes place from August , directly in the nursery or in the open field. The transplant is carried out from September to January for the onion and early January to late March for the onion . And the collection from April onwards . All farming operations are carried out by hand by local farmers .

In fact if they are on the market three types : the one with the fresh leaves, the red , of course the most famous , the white onion , the onion from Serbia , dry and without leaves. Feature is its elongated shape covered with a thin red skin, while the interior is white and fleshy . Known for its sweetness , due to a high percentage of sugars ( mainly glucose and fructose) , rich in potassium and sodium, but low in fat , the Tropea Red Onion , it is quite easy to digest . The bulb contains a lot of vitamin C, vitamin E, iron , selenium, iodine , zinc and magnesium , has many benefits , one of these is the power antisclerotico that brings benefit to the heart and arteries , and prevents the risk of heart attack, is also traditionally used to treat intestinal infections , kidney stones and pertussis finally used as a natural sedative , useful to facilitate sleep .

Nocera Terinese - The brawn, provolone Sila and local producers Nocera Terinese, as well as other countries in this area, has kept many of the old traditions. Among these is certainly the production of sausages called “Soppressata” and “Capicollo”. Many farming families, even today, continue on an annual basis to renew this tradition. In some cases then, the business has taken on characteristics giving rise to professional companies that regularly operate in the industry. In local supermarkets you can find these products, that even if they come from compamies, still keep the craftsmanship peculiarity.

25

Did you know that “Soppressata” is one of the most typical Italian product known and appreciated abroad?

The sausages obtained are then tied with string, with holes to let the air out and placed in wicker baskets with some weights above, in order to incorporate the typical flat shape. The texture is firm, soft , more or less depending on the time of ripening. The color is red , and varies depending on the amount of chilli pepper used in the preparation . The taste is slightly spicy, with the exception of certain types of brawn (a few actually) that have liberal doses of red pepper. Its aroma is very intense, harmonizes the palate even after drinking a glass of red wine, with whom it marries happily. Calabria is also famous for some cheeses, particularly, for example, “provolone cheese Sila” from the Sila montain chain and “Poro cheese” from the mountain which is located in the province of Vibo Valentia. In local supermarkets are never missing some of these products in several versions offered by different local companies. In Nocera Terinese products can be found at Conad on the highway, at the supermarket Fiorelli located on the avenue station and in some local butchers.

Capitolo: Nocera Terinese - The brawn, provolone Sila and local producers

Soppressata Calabrese DOP (acronym stating the protected origin of the product) is produced in the entire region. It is prepared by cutting the meat into small pieces by hand. It is then salted, peppered and mixed with chilli or with a sauce of peppers cooked in a water bath. After a bit of time necessary to harmonize all the smells, the meat mixture is put into natural casings .

We recommend that you make a stop in this shop and to buy a little stock of these magnificent sausages. Falerna Falerna - A bit 'of history ..

The new town grew on the slopes of Mount Mancuso , on land where the Prince Aquinas had collected some shepherds and farmers from other countries . Ancient memories still retain the names of the first 30 families, along with their countries of origin: Motta S. Lucia, Nocera, Martirano, and a Savuto ( Spinelli ) also Nicastro . The new town grew rapidly, far from Popilia, the major artery commissioned by the Romans and reactivated by the Normans, then fall into neglect due to lack of maintenance, rebuilt later by the Spaniards to the Postal Service (Castiglione was a rest station before reaching Pizzo ) and become, finally, a place of transit for bandits and outlaws, and households grew from 32 in 1648 to 57 in 1669, up to, 50 years after the birth of the center

31

Capitolo: Falerna - A bit 'of history ..

The origins of Falerna are not very old, the foundation dates back to the first half of the seventeenth century, when the country was built by Aquinas as part of a general reorganization of the feuds, struck by a deep economic and demographic crisis that had weakened the social and economic fabric of the Principality and had plunged the population into a state of deep misery and poverty.

to 285 people . The phase of demographic development is manifested throughout the second half of the century, and involved the whole of the estate, so much so that the two centers, Falerna and Castiglione, at the end of the seventeenth century came to touch the 1,500 residents, compared to many of Martirano, 2000 in Nocera and 600 S. Mango. The dependence near Castiglione feud did not last long, and when the first families already formed a permanent settlement, two miles from the sea, the town gained administrative autonomy, and the numbering of the fires of 1648 Falerna figured it alone.

32

From the religious point of view the town of Falerna, at the time of its foundation, was from Nocera followed by priests who celebrated Mass in a church, until the territory was equipped with its own church, and the parish church, dedicated S. Thomas Aquinas in homage to the feudal lords, was united to the diocese of Tropea. The church was now equipped with the parish registers, and the first marriage was recorded June 5, 1661.

Capitolo: Falerna - A bit 'of history ..

Throughout the eighteenth century the country was enriched by new buildings, while Castiglione saw the population decrease day by day, in 1797, in fact, the inhabitants of the ancient village had fallen to 366, while Falerna count had reached 1040.

33 The town was alive from the beginning the devotion to Mary. Virgin of the Rosary, and in 1749, to make it even more solemn worship, was founded the Congregation of Our Lady of the Faithful, located in what was the first sacred place of the founders of the village, while at the same time was almost up Mount Frumentario form of Charity. The church of Falerna found himself reunited with those of Castiglione, Nocera and S. Mango in a district of about 7000 souls in the Second Further Calabria, a province established at the end of the administrative organization of the United operated first by the French and then by the Bourbons.

At the head of the district was Nocera , with its 2571 inhabitants, while S. Mango counted 2201 Falerna 1785 Castiglione 530. Meanwhile Falerna , together with the first church in the country, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary today , arose other churches: the Church of St. Thomas, who is the parish, and the Church of Providence, built at the end of the last century .

From the district of the City Martirano passed in 1832 the district of Nocera , and the territory was incorporated in the District of Nicastro . From that moment the events of Falerna began to be oriented towards the plain Lametina , and when the Calabria took up arms against the Bourbons , volunteers falernesi and Castiglione rushed to give their contribution to the revolution of 1848 , fighting sull'Angitola , paying the weight of the Bourbon repression that followed , and returning again to battle on the Volturno to the orders of general Garibaldi . Immediately after the plebiscite Falerna grew to about 2600 inhabitants.

Of all the religious festivals, today only a few resist , among them the celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of October as part of a threeday calendar that goes through the traditional fair of the Crosses and ends with the procession of the Madonna. The urban development of the seaside town has prompted the diocese to build a modern sacred building in Falerna Scalo, and the church was dedicated to St. Francesco di Paola , the patron of seafarers . Even Castiglione, who after Falerna Falerna Scalo center and is the third major conurbation in the territory of the Municipality celebrates its main festival in August, dedicating it to St. Martyr Phocas . This medieval town, once rich in monasteries and other civil and military retains today only the ruins of the castle and a church , all the rest was destroyed by his own religious traditions.

34

During the twentieth century have disappeared from the religious life of Falerna also the Brotherhoods , while the evangelical phenomenon , born in the late nineteenth century, has come to count around 1950 more than 70 followers , some artisans and employees. But even the Waldensian Church of Falerna was able to overcome the impact of modern times , and the evangelical tradition has been lost, so lost as it appears today in the same building that once was the Temple of this additional form of popular religiosity.

Significant also are the rites of the Holy Week because well attended by people. With regard to moments of meeting or public holidays are not precisabili dates , but it is certain that most of them take place during the summer in Falerna Marina , which is one of the most important seaside resorts of the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Falerna - Castiglione and the old village. The Normans in 1602, Castiglione Maritime endowed with a real castle. His name was "Leo Castrum". Around the castle, farmers and fishermen are confident they built their modest homes and soon the church was built. The town took dimensions from the village and eventually became the city took the name of Castel lion then become Castiglione. The city also gave name to a family of nobles presumably of Norman origin, who was the last descendant of William Castiglione, who died before 1300, after which he was assigned to Adinolfo Aquinas, and was one of the first estates in Calabria, after Belcastro in 1260, the homonymous powerful family.

38

Unique is the way in which it was made public the act of concession, which was in fact engraved on the front door of the castle, and unfortunately has been lost over time but remains etched in the memory of those who, with great detail and with enthusiasm in the search, has reconstructed the story. We recall it below:

Charles II of Anjou granted the fief of the territory of Castiglione to Adinolfo almost as compensation for the seizure, which occurred after the death of Manfred, the old land of Aquinas in Frosinone in favor of the crown, because her father Thomas had fought against the Angionini Naples to defend the invasion of the French.

Today Castiglione extends beyond the old castle and village is a very interesting as close to the sea, however, and at a height of about 150 meters above sea level and then at

Gizzeria Gizzeria - A bit of history..

The form "Izaria" is instead due to the migration from Albania. In Norman times the name was, on the contrary, Yussaria. From Izaria derived subsequently Jzaria (1510), then mutatosi, for phonetic reasons, in Jazzaria or Jizzeria. The current name is in use since 1753. The country's history, after the destruction by the Saracens, which took place towards the end of the year one thousand, namely the 981, according to some historical sources say, is largely centered in the first centuries, the monastery of St. greek Nicholas, a small cluster of a few people, mostly housed in barns and hovels. The monastery, which was built on land belonging to the Knights of Malta, had at first a life of its own, which lasted until Robert Guiscard, latinizzandolo, granted to the famous Benedictine abbey of St. Euphemia.

Capitolo: Gizzeria - A bit of history..

Gizzeria, while being part of an area of great archaeological importance, it has ancient origins. The only definite information of the first constitution of the country does not go beyond the Byzantine period. Very controversial is the etymology of the name Gizzeria. There are those who believed derived from the greek "Izwsios" (be located).

Around this community, was developed as the first nucleus of the town of Gizzeria, a country that would not have had a further development, however, had it not been invigorated by the contribution of some Albanian refugees in southern Italy came to quell the revolt Calabrian barons, led by Antonio Centelles, who had rebelled against the king of Naples, Alfonso I of Aragon.

The first settlers Albanians, mostly poor and not very respectful of the neighbors and of feudal power, to make a living were forced to raid the countryside that gave rise to constant complaints by affected populations. Only when they were precluded all hope of returning to their homeland, Albania, they were forced to accept the vassalage of the Knights of Malta. Since the establishment of "universitas", between 1558 and 1574, its history, like that of many other small towns in Calabria, offers no special novelty items for centuries. Only at the end of 700, and the advent of the French, the country seems to shake off the torpor atavistic, reserving a good reception to the wards of the revolutionary army, but then they change their minds in 1806, when Gizzeria greeted with gunfire those Frenchmen who had remain there for three years.

Even a cell Mazzini there arose and prospered , animated primarily by Antonio Miceli and from that ' Toj to Alexander , who then end up among the thousands of Garibaldi. The only remains of this historical path are constituted by the religious buildings and palaces from the few middle- upper middle class , with some research that duplicates forms of ornamentation " neoclassical " . The Albanians had brought in the new lands , together with the language , their traditions , their customs , their uses . The commonality with other families from other parts of Calabria , especially after the two disastrous earthquakes of 1638 and 1783 , trade , relationships, marriages with people of neighboring countries, significantly altered the character of the population , paving the progressive arbresh disappearance of the idiom . Period up to the 800 , today the Albanian language is no longer remembered and a little trace remains only a few single words, while it survives , with some variations, the traditional female costume . During Fascism the territory of Gizzeria was reduced considerably. The intense remediation activities, prepared by the government in 1928 and given to the full exploitation of the rough terrain waterflow , subjected it, in fact, the Plains of S. Euphemia , marshy and continuous source of malaria for the few inhabitants ( around 200) , a work of restoration . Restored , so the natural balance of the plain, the fascist government also built the new village of St. Euphemia , built according to the patterns of the architecture of the time with an octagonal shape and a square in which eight streets and converged around which revolved the new structures .

Here, as in several other towns of Calabria, religious festivals are started with the rite of Holy Week. More significant is the solemn celebration , which takes place June 24 in honor of the Patron Saint John the Baptist, the people celebrate this festival with faith unchanged ever since the religious feeling was and still is always lively and sincere . On the third Sunday of October each year, however, takes place in the district of " Cona " Fiera del SS . Rosario was established on October 2, 1886 , during the time in danger of disappearing due to several controversies , even though in 1921 it was restored by the City Council of the city Prefectural Authority .

The surrondings - Cleto Cleto has ancient origins. The settlement at the foot of Mount St. Angel, clings to the rock, and in fact Pietramala was called up in mid-1863. Its medieval castle, from where you control all the territory up to near the Tyrrhenian Sea - acquired the entire Earth Pietramala by notarial deed dated 29 October 1615 30 thousand ducats by Aquinas by Hercules Giannuzzi Savelli, first baron of the manor, - as described by Joseph Giannuzzi Savelli in a book published in 2004 in a limited edition (only 600 copies), is "powerful and severe," for centuries the residence of the family, which implements the same Ercole with new buildings. Then, the earthquake had reduced in ruins, and now, after the recent restoration has finally returned with all its grandeur in "knight dell'intiero country" from which there is "a landscape of immeasurable beauty".

65

The settlement , which is indicated since the Middle Ages under the name of Pietramala or Petramala , taken after the unification of Italy named Cletus. This is based on those reported by Barrio and Flower who reported a mythical foundation of the center by Cleta , nurse Penthesilea , queen of the Amazons. The territory of Cleto , which also occupies part of the valley of Savuto , since ancient major route of penetration into the interior, has not returned a few ancient testimonies which confirm the existence of a number of structured settlements and places both along the coastal path closely that in the inner hilly or mountainous . These units , although popular in medieval and modern times , similar to what is seen in many other settlements of Calabria , Apulia , Basilicata and Sicily, sometimes have quite a few similarities with the funeral caves found in Cozzo Piano Grande Serra d ' Aiello, dated to the middle Bronze Age ( XVI - half of the thirteenth century BC). In the Middle Ages , the need to defend and control the coastline has affected the birth and development of the settlements, so much so that one of the main features of this narrow strip of land is to be dotted with fortifications developed organically from Angevin age but with significant pre-existing Norman age .

66

The settlement of Cleto is dominated by the robust structure of the castle built in the second half of the thirteenth century at the behest of Charles I of Anjou. However, very recent investigations conducted within the fort were allowed to assume an attendance area already in the Byzantine age - Norman (X - XI cent.) . Pietramala had walls complemented by round towers still clearly recognizable in the village , as well as in the castle , you can see the signs refined expressions buildings . The village, despite some restoration work, is being phased out and the highest concentration of empty homes now occurs mainly in the area at the foot of the fort . In the sandstone outcrops , both in the historical center and in the surrounding area , there are numerous caves and cavities that highlight the complexity of the core rock cletese . Many of these caves were until a few years ago still used by farmers as animal shelters or depots for agricultural equipment. However, despite the frequent reuse , and the partial destruction wrought during the work of " redevelopment " of the historic center performed in the 90s in many cases are still recognizable signs of the oldest uses.

The urban rich medieval survivals , testimonials, rock , and notes the valuable architectural and artistic still exist, such as the fine example of Catalan window , make today Cleto an extraordinary research laboratory and a center that is worth keeping in life with commitment . We recommend a visit to the old town on foot by climbing up on top of the castle to enjoy the wonderful views enjoyed by the rulers of the past. In 1054 the village, called Flumen Frigidum (Cold River - now called the River Sea) to the low temperature of its water, was captured by Robert Guiscard who gave it to his brother Roger the Norman. who considered the ideal place to curb the assaults of enemies. In later centuries the manor lived moments of glory and splendor playing a major role in terms of strategic and political. There are many important personalities who lived there: the Duke of Somma, the Viceroy of Calabria,

In 1807 the manor was torn to shreds by French General Reyner of that, at all costs, he wanted to capture Giovan Battista De Michele, head of the Bourbon resistance in Calabria Citra. Today, after the restoration of nearly 10 years (but will need to continue the work of recovery yet), at a cost of more than â‚Ź 5 billion, the Castle of the Valley, has regained its unmistakable beauty. In particular, the restoration has allowed the recovery of some underground rooms that will become a place for art exhibitions, and perhaps also of museum exhibitions. One day in July of 1975, while returning from her holiday in Sicily, Salvatore Fiume , intrigued by the homonymous , he decided to make a detour to Fiumefreddo . He came out from the Falerna , traveled throughout the State 18 to the north , and soon after the pinewood of the Lombards , looking up , he saw the ruins of the castle and a cluster of houses clinging to the top of the mountain . Soon the place became the summer residence for the painter (and sculptor ), who enriched his bright talent frescoing , among others, the crumbling walls of the medieval castle and the dome of the church of San Rocco. "The Room of Desires" at the Castle of the Valley is definitely the greatest masterpiece by Salvatore Fiume , the ruins of the walls are covered with paintings illustrating the "dream of the artist Fiumefreddo " and two sculptures,

" Cartusia nunquam reformata quia nunquam deformed ," says an old adage of monastic origin : the Charterhouse has never been reformed , because his spirit , his ideal , he never distorted . It should not , therefore, surprising that , as noted by Corrado Alvaro in " A train in the South ," the Certosa can give the impression of being out of time. Yet it would be wrong to think of the Carthusians as "heroes " of the faith. The monks are people like everyone else and the principles of their lives are marked by the equilibrium that leads them to distribute their time between the moments devoted to solitary prayer and those dedicated to communal living , exercising, according to the words of St. Bruno , a laborious idleness and quiet action . Between these two poles leads the daily life of the Carthusians , as you can see from the " table" Community organization in use at the Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno. The Carthusian monks begin their day when that other people's ends. At 22.45 , after a sleep of about four hours, the Monaco, which has stopped

Capitolo: The surroundings - “Serra S. Bruno” village, the “Certosa” and the adventury park “Adrenalina verde”

For those who observe from outside the life of the Carthusians - the monastic order founded by Saint Bruno of Cologne in 1084 , whose second house saw the light in Calabria in 1091 - can be truly " paradox " and " scandal." It is , in fact, a choice that , although tempered by moments of life in common, situated in solitude and silence its indispensable premise : "The ideal of our profession - reads the text of the Statutes of the Carthusian - is primarily in waiting the silence and solitude of the cell . This is the holy land and the place where the Lord and his servant often speak together , like a man with his friend . frequently In it, the faithful soul is united to the Divine Word , the bride unites with the Bridegroom , the heavenly things themselves with the mundane , the divine to the human . " The architecture of functional Charterhouses is this choice made by the monks of isolation when a Carthusian protrudes from any window of the cell sees only the small perimeter of your garden and the blind wall , without opening the cell to the left . Two Carthusian monks who were to appear at the same time they could not see each other. This explains why the life of the Carthusians is protected by the " sounds of the world " by a rigid enclosure which , at the same time , prevent the monks from the monastery to go out - except for the spacing weekly - and who does not is to visit the Carthusian Charterhouse . Approaching a Carthusian monastery - and the Carthusian monastery of Serra San Bruno is no exception , of course, this "rule" - we approach a city of faith , in which the long perimeter wall keeps people who have decided to make an radical not because I hate the world or because disillusioned by the secular life , but as a result of that particular "call" that leads to the monastic vocation and expressing the desire to enter into full relationship with God in contemplation. The Carthusians , to borrow a metaphor that in the Middle Ages enjoyed great fortune , do not despise the office of Martha, busy daily schedule , but choose the part of Mary, the silent sister sitting at Jesus' feet listening to his word , convinced that this is " the best part which shall not be taken away ." No coincidence that it is a monastic order that , with the inevitable adjustments of the Statutes of the Church theological updating , has essentially retained its original spirit intact

At the end of this Office , around 23.30 , begins in the convent church the long night vigil : " During the Night Office - write the Carthusians of Serra in a publication - are read Scripture and the Fathers , and after each reading is followed by the singing the great Responsories in the sober melodies of ancient Gregorian church of Lyons of the eleventh century . At the end of the Carthusian Office returns to his cell , and after Lauds of the Office of the Virgin, goes to bed until 5.45am , when he gets up and starts because it sounds before the recitation of the offices to which the monks are required even at the stroke of the other canonical hours ( Terce, Sext, and None ) . The divine service is completed during the day at the conventual Mass sung Masses hermit chapels , and Vespers , before the break , Compline . This service , which is the essential aim of the life of the monks, knows , however, regular breaks and intervals during which the Carthusians can indulge in activities such as study - with the opportunity to attend the monastic library at certain times of the day - the manual work , the care of the cell and gardening . Faced with all this, and other " waivers " that life in the Charterhouse requires , it is not easy for the viewer to grasp the meaning outside of this choice without deforming its nature. It is not easy to avoid the double risk of mythical transfiguration , which sees the monks almost as exceptional individuals , and arrogance skeptical . The real " scandal " of life in the Charterhouse is its simplicity : pray, study , write , participate in liturgical celebrations , meliorate the hard exercise of Gregorian chant, enjoy nature during the spacing weekly , engage in activities such as manual bind books , these things are the "secret" newspaper that the Carthusians guard in " sheltered harbor " of their monasteries.

Behind us , the cliffs of Milazzo perdevansi gradually in the dark. Towards the west , the distant profile of the island of Vulcano confondevasi hill darkness. To hold the helm with a steady hand , I ought to take her pupils fixed on the biggest star of Orion , the wing leaning and then straightening glue boat or hid , now discopriva . Later , rising behind the mountains of Calabria , the moon was to follow with his face bright our journey , stretching the groove left by boat o'er his immense footprint of silvery light. The phosphorescent jellyfish went in long processions , suddenly flickered under the blow of the oars , and then dispersed into the waves from the star lit up at night. How sweet these wonderful nights on the Mediterranean abandon the thought in harmony with nature. " Think you arrive, today , in the Aeolian Islands , covering the stretch of sea that separates Volcano from Milazzo with a rowing boat, as he did that night in 1865 Reclus , an idea may seem odd , even silly in an era that has made speed a god who sacrificed all their energies .

I dintorni - Riserva marina di Capo Rizzuto Sea, fine sand color titian , craggy cliffs and wild that blend with the changing colors of the sky : from the landscape seem to exhale the perfumes of the past and memories of history. This is what the Marine Protected Area " Capo Rizzuto " offers the visitor a journey through history, legend , myth and archeology , but also a path through a unique biological and natural heritage of great value and preciousness.

The establishment of the protected area follows a twofold objective: the preservation of a unique stretch of coast from the environmental point of view , marked by more than 42 km from a long series of small coves, and the protection of the vast and rich archaeological heritage , this on the seabed. It is mainly the depths that reveal the beauty for which the reserve is a haven to protect and preserve. They are characterized by vast meadows of Posidonia Oceanica , marine plant , endemic to the Mediterranean, which has a key role in the ecosystem. The underwater world of the Marine Protected Area is characterized by hair and dry skin , which carved by the sea and by the currents , creating a maze of tunnels and caves , offering a perfect refuge for many species of marine animals. Inside were identified three zones of Integral Reserve , classified as A and corresponding to the sea areas surrounding Cape Colonna and Capo Cimiti , and the stretch of sea off Cape Blanc, in which there is a more rigid system of protection . In zone A, Integral Reserve are prohibited bathing, scuba diving with and without breathing apparatus , navigation with boats and watercraft , anchoring , mooring and fishing. With regard to the area of Cape Cimiti allowed guided tours diving without breathing apparatus , governed by the managing body . Instead, it is allowed to access and stop the service unit with the task of monitoring and rescue, and those of support for scientific research programs

From there we climb towards Gizzeria upper part and then we go down to the village Parco dei Principi, taking then the raw parallel road of the SS18 road until you get to Falerna Marina, and from there, along the raw path, we arrive at the junction to get back to Nocera Scalo.. The slopes are not excessive, only 5-6% in a few parts and a small climb of 300 meters at 10%, the rest flat and downhill. The main difficulty lies in resisting for 4-5 hours riding on a bike.
