The 3rd annual Road Today Truck Show held at the Powerade Centre in Brampton on May 28th and 29th was a colorful event and wellembraced by the industry and community. The show featured activities of interest for attendees’ young and old, including an indoor and outdoor trade show, a show and shine competition, Ontario Provincial Police rollover simulator, motorcycle drill performance, live entertainment and lots more.

The motto of the Road Today Truck Show was to Inform, Educate & Entertain. The participants, displays and activities of the show were tailored to give life to this motto.

The weekend show generated interest from all sectors of the trucking and transportation industry, and had around 100 exhibitors to showcase the latest in the industry. They included trucks, trailers, heavy-duty parts and accessories, engines and power train components, servicing equipment and supplies, fuels and fuel additives, financial and computer services as well as numerous other products and services used in the trucking industry. Thousands of visitors came through the doors and were seen making the best use of available resources. The booth of Ministry of Transportation was a big

hit as visitors posed many questions to the enforcement staff.

Escalating Fuel Prices Could Get Even Worse With Federal Biodiesel Mandate Says Consumer Coalition Truckers, bus companies want consumer protection law if mandate goes ahead

Following the dramatic spike in fuel prices, a coalition of Canadian on-road diesel fuel user associations is raising the alarm over the price impact that a government-imposed biodiesel mandate scheduled to come into force on July 1st of this year will have on their members.

The federal government’s own regulatory impact analysis statement (RIAS) said the biodiesel mandate will cost taxpayers $2 ½ billion over the next 25 years and increase pump prices for diesel fuel and reduce the fuel efficiency of commercial vehicles while generating little in the way of GHG reductions.

The coalition, which comprises the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), Motor Coach Canada (MCC), which is the national lobby group for bus companies and the OwnerOperator’s Business Association of Canada (OBAC), which represents small independent truck operators, say the national biofuel mandate, if it is to go ahead needs to be amended to provide protection for diesel fuel consumers from prices that exceed those of regular diesel, supply shortages and potential operational issues. They point to individual US states such as Massachusetts and New Mexico, whose biofuel mandates allow for the suspension of the regulations should the price of diesel fuel climb above that of regular diesel fuel.

Diesel prices in Canada have been on an upward tear for about two years and recently were within shouting distance of the average price of diesel fuel for 2008, the year that record prices were recorded. Overnight, retail prices of diesel fuel rose by another three cents per litre.

Retail prices for diesel have escalated by over 27 per cent over the past year. At the wholesale level (as measured by the average rack price) prices are up by over 30 per cent during the same period.

According to the coalition consumer concerns have received short shrift from politicians eager to curry favour with and harvest votes from big agribusiness at the expense of the people and businesses that operate the vehicles that will have to use the fuel. They cite figures from the United States, where various states have introduced biodiesel mandates, showing prices

running anywhere from one to eight cents per litre more than regular diesel despite federal subsidies. They argue that the price of canola – expected to be the prime feedstock for biodiesel in Canada – is already at record prices and volumes. It is common knowledge that Canada will need to import about 85 per cent of its biodiesel requirements to meet the demand created by the mandate. Moreover, prices will be vulnerable to all those things that impact on agricultural commodity prices that no one has any control over, such as the weather, floods, etc.

It’s not only trucks and buses that will be paying higher prices at the pump as a

result of the planned biodiesel mandate. A growing number of car owners are switching to diesel-powered automobiles because of the greater efficiency and lower fuel costs. For these car owners, the biodiesel mandate will further drive up prices and expose individual diesel car owners to fuel that may void there warranties.

“The biodiesel mandate is going to exacerbate the problem of higher fuel costs through increased prices at the pump and through reduced fuel content of biodiesel,” said David Bradley, president and CEO of the 4,500 member trucking alliance.

Brian Crow, MCC president, says bus companies, like trucking fleets, are wor-

ried about the impact the biodiesel mandate will have on the costs of operating a motor coach, as well as on engine durability and operability.

Joanne Ritchie, OBAC’s executive director, says the cost increases associated with biodiesel will hurt her members – mostly single-truck operators. “Fuel is the largest single cost component for these small businesses; a few cents either way can be the difference of whether they survive or not. Even the most conservative estimates suggest this regulation will take $4,000 to $6,000 out of my members’ pockets with no opportunity for a payback.”

(NC)—When your child outgrew their forward facing car seat, did you move him or her into a booster seat? If you did, you’re one of the growing numbers of Canadian families that use this important safety device, says Safe Kids Canada, the national injury prevention program of The Hospital for Sick Children. In order to be properly protected, children need to use a booster seat in the car from the time they outgrow

their forward facing car seat until they are at least four feet nine inches (145 cm) tall.

Still many Canadian parents skip the booster seat stage, leaving their children vulnerable to serious injuries, or even death, in the event of a crash.

Do you think your child is ready for a seat belt? Here’s how to tell: 1. Shoulders: Does the vehicle shoulder belt lie in the middle of the shoulder and across the middle of your child’s chest, without touching the neck?

It’s dangerous for the seat belt to touch the neck because it can be easily injured in a crash.

2. Hips: Does the vehicle lap belt rest low on your child’s hips, under the belly area? The seat belt should lie on the hip bone area,

not on your child’s internal organs.

3. Seated height: Is your child at least 25 inches (63 cm) from tailbone to top of head while sitting up straight in a chair?

4. Knees: Do your child’s knees bend comfortably over the edge of the vehicle seat without causing them to slouch forward in their seat? This helps your child stay comfortable, which prevents slouching.

If you answered “yes” to all four questions, your child is ready for a seat belt on its own.

Tune–up tips for today’s driver

(NC)—Back when your parents were teenagers, getting a Canadian drivers license was a true rite of passage. It meant independence and responsibility. It also meant that if

you were fortunate enough to have a car, you knew how to take care of it.

However, today more than 40 percent of consumers don’t know how to tune–up their cars. How to solve

this quandary?

Here are three must–dos to keep in mind next time your ride is in need of service.

1. Replace the spark plugs – According to Autolite, a leading spark plug brand, one of the most economical ways to maintain an efficient engine and avoid wasting fuel is to change spark plugs at regular intervals, according to your owner’s manual.

2. Replace the oil and oil filter – The job of oil is to lubricate the engine, help it run smoothly, and prevent friction between the parts.

The oil filter helps remove engine– damaging dirt and grit from the oil during every pass through the filter.

Regular oil and oil filter changes help keep the inside of the engine both lubricated and clean, so it can run as efficiently as possible. Check your oil level regularly and change your oil and filter at least as often as the recommended maintenance intervals in your owner’s manual. Pay close attention to the description of driving conditions for normal or severe service intervals.

3. Do a flush/fill – A flush/fill means that you flush the cooling system to clean it and remove sediments that have built up over time, and fill it with new antifreeze/coolant to keep the engine cool and prevent overheats and freeze–ups. Coolant should be checked at least twice a year, however it’s best to check the owner’s manual for maintenance intervals.

TTC to move ahead with Presto card plan The TTC will be moving forward with a plan to adopt the province’s Presto fare card system, an apparent change of heart after it touted an alternate payment system of its own.

A staff report to be presented at a TTC meeting Wednesday recommends the city begin negotiations with the Ontario government and the regional transportation authority Metrolinx on how to implement the Presto system.

The push for Presto comes as part of a deal with the Ontario government in which the province signed off on scrapping the Transit City light rail plan in favour of dedicating $8.2 billion for the construction of an underground light rail line under Eglinton Avenue, said TTC Chair Karen Stintz.

When the revised plans were announced, “it was clear that the Eglinton Crosstown would have Presto as its method of payment,” Stintz said.

Adam Giambrone, her predecessor, had opposed the Presto card, saying it was too expensive and had sought proposals on another open payment system where riders could pay fares with the tap of a credit card.

But the province had long maintained the Greater Toronto Area should have only one payment system.

“Over the years, we’ve slowly been moving to implementation of Presto and we did want to look at other options just to make sure we were getting the best deal for the city and for the riders,” said Stintz. But she suggested more provincial money would be required in order to fully implement the plan.

“And I think that if the province does do what it says it’s going to do in terms of providing the city with financial assistance, we will be able to offer that deal for the riders,” she said.

Stintz said Presto “will evolve” into an open payment system, but couldn’t say how long it would be before the system was fully implemented.

The system is being tested at twelve subway stations as part of a pilot project.

A Presto system would require riders to purchase a fare card, and then load it with money before using.

Meritor appoints John Nelligan to General Manager, OEM Sales & National Accounts Meritor has appointed John Nelligan to the role of general manager, OEM Sales & National Accounts, replacing Dennis Kline who recently retired from the company after 36 years. Nelligan reports directly to Joe Plomin, vice president, Truck Americas for Meritor.

“John’s extensive background in the North America truck industry is a vital component to being successful in this role,” Plomin said. “He brings the perfect blend of experience and knowledge to this job.”

In this position, Nelligan is responsible for Meritor’s OEM customers in North America. Nelligan

will also retain responsibility for Meritor’s large national accounts.

Nelligan most recently served as general manager, North American Field Operations, and brings more than 20 years of industry experience to the role. Prior to joining Meritor in 2009, he spent four years as Dealer Principal and GM at Harper Truck Centres Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He has also previously held executive positions at Daimler Trucks North America and Western Star Trucks.

Nelligan holds a bachelor’s degree in political administration from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Starting this July the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be adopting the national safety code standard for periodic mandatory vehicle inspections of trucks, trailers and converter dollies.

The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) has now given its thumbs up to MTO’s enforcement strategy that although the national standard will take effect by regulation on July 1, 2011, carriers will be able – for the first 24 months – to choose to inspect vehicles according to either the current requirements (as per Regulation 611 Schedules 1, 2

and 4, as they were in effect June 30, 2011); or, they can conduct inspections according to the new requirements contained in the national standard.

“The two-year period will allow the industry to become familiar with the new inspection criteria and to incorporate them into their safety management systems,” said OTA president, David Bradley.

“This should lead to an orderly, well-planned transition to the new requirements.”

Truck and bus safety inspectors will be on the job night and day during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 72-hour International Roadcheck June 7-9, 2011 checking vehicles and their drivers at inspection sites along major highways across North America. In addition, roving patrols will inspect vehicles and drivers traveling other roadways.

Since its inception in 1988, the roadside inspections conducted during the annual Roadcheck have numbered over one million, resulting in more than 234 lives saved and 4,293 injuries avoided. It has also provided for the distribution of countless pieces of educational literature and safety events to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program.

Although actual percentage estimates vary, it is widely acknowledged that driver fatigue is a factor

in many commercial truck and bus crashes. For this reason, Federal regulations limit the number of both consecutive and cumulative hours a commercial driver may operate his or her vehicle without an offduty rest period. With the recent increased attention being made relative to driver hours of service and electronic on-board recorders (EOBRs), Roadcheck will emphasize checking driver logbooks and underscore to drivers the importance of maintaining their logbooks, taking breaks, preventing fatigue, and driving without distractions.

This year, Roadcheck 2011 will include added emphasis on finding carriers of household goods (HHG) who may be operating “under-the-radar” by using improperly marked rental vehicles and/or operating as a property carrier rather than HHG carrier.

Aggressive Driving and Road Rage Occasionally, motorists have found themselves in unpleasant situations involving abusive gestures or language from another driver who takes issue with how they drive.

Anxiety and frustration can quickly spark an aggressive or careless driver who tailgates, speeds, fails to yield the right of way among other behaviours.

Aggressive driving behaviour may lead to incidents of road rage where motorists have been threatened and/or subjected to retaliatory actions by angry motorists.

If people drive responsibly they will reduce the chances of conflict on the road and help make our roads safer. Experts recommend the following tips to help avoid road conflicts: • Plan your route in advance. Some of the most erratic and inconsiderate driving occurs when motorists are lost; • Make a conscious decision not to take your problems with you when driving; • Combat the warning signs of stress by getting fresh air and breathing deeply and slowly. Listen to relaxing music; • Avoid long drives if you can. If you take a long trip, stop every few hours for a rest. Before and during a long drive, avoid heavy meals which tend to make a person lethargic; • Drive in a courteous and considerate manner. Give way at busy intersections and where traffic lanes merge; • Don’t compete or retaliate. If someone’s driving annoys you, don’t try to “educate them”. Leave traffic enforcement to the police; • Don’t take other driver’s mistakes personally; • Avoid honking your horn unless absolutely necessary and, if you must, tap on it lightly; • Say, “Sorry” if you make a mistake. An apology can reduce the risk of conflict; • If you are being physically threatened, stay in your car and lock the doors. If you have a cell phone call the police. Use your horn and lights to attract attention; • If you think you are being followed, do not drive home. Go to a police station or a busy public place; • Don’t carry a defensive weapon, it might provoke a potential assailant.

Shawn Jameson, Safety & Compliance Manger at SGT Transport in Brampton was honoured on the evening of the banquet with a trophy, wall plaque, diamond ring and a $500.00 travel voucher.

Shawn was honoured for making an outstanding contribution to road safety in Ontario.

All nominations were judged by a selection committee based on such criteria as current and past driving record, road safety promotion and community

involvement.

The selection committee was made up of representatives from the transportation industry that includes the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Provincial Police, Motor Vehicle Safety Association, Ontario Trucking Association, Ontario Motor Coach Association, Ontario Safety League, Transportation Health & Safety Association amongst others and was chaired by the MVSA president.
