aterpillar has unveiled its first Cat Vocational Truck, the Cat CT660, at the CONEXPOCON/AGG 2011 trade show in Las Vegas.

“This is an exciting and historic milestone for us,” said Caterpillar Vice President Steve Gosselin who has responsibility for the On-Highway Global Truck Group.

“The CT660 is a natural expansion of our product line and a perfect complement to other Cat equipment. Its introduction is a direct result of our commitment to con-

tinuously develop new products that accelerate the business success of our customers.”

Anticipate traffic to survive summer driving snarls (NC)—As any driver will tell you, there are four seasons in Canada – fall, winter, spring and construction.

Nothing is more infuriating than being stuck in traffic, moving mere inches every few minutes and being parked on roadways.

On top of pumping up your gas bill and causing needless C02 (carbon dioxide) emissions from entering the atmosphere, it can drive you mad.

However, there is something you can do and if you practice it year–round, your wallet and Mother Nature will thank you.

By anticipating the flow of traffic and reacting accordingly you’ll not only protect yourself and your family on the road but also increase your fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, minimize the strain on your wallet and lessen your frustration.

The principle behind this tip calls on drivers to maintain their vehicle’s momentum and avoid unnecessary stops. Without breaking any road regulations, drivers can easily anticipate traffic and proactively man-

age their place within traffic to minimize slowdowns, red lights and other interruptions.

How can hard braking use more fuel?

This happens when a driver keeps a foot on the accelerator – all the while feeding fuel to the engine – then brakes hard. It’s more fuel efficient to let off the accelerator early and drive smoothly. Anticipating the flow of traffic not only reduces your fuel consumption but it will also save you money by limiting the additional wear and tear on your brakes and tires.

The number one rule is to leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you and to plan your manoeuvres well in advance.

Over the course of a year, the savings for fuel–efficient drivers can range from five to more than 25 per cent.

Electric vehicles: what you should know (NC)—With concerns about climate change and air pollution, many Canadian drivers are interested in alternatives such as electric vehicles.

Here are some facts from the Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada that may satisfy your curiosity regarding three different types of electric vehicles – hybrid electric, plug–in hybrid electric and all–electric.

• A hybrid electric vehicle has a conventional engine plus an electric motor and battery. The battery is recharged when the vehicle is being driven so hybrid electric vehicles never need to be plugged in. Hybrid electric vehicles consume significantly less fuel and emit less carbon dioxide as the electric motor and battery improve energy efficiency.

• A plug–in hybrid electric vehicle is similar to a hybrid electric vehicle. The difference is that, for these vehicles, plugging– in is an option that allows the vehicle to use electricity from the power grid to charge its battery, further reducing its on–road environmental impact.

• An all–electric vehicle is driven by an electric motor powered by batteries.

All–electric vehicles are considered zero– emission vehicles, as the electric motor produces no exhaust emissions while on the road. Since there is no internal combustion engine, an all–electric vehicle does not have the driving range of a conventional vehicle, but is suitable for many of the trips Canadians take everyday.

Hybrid electric vehicles are readily available for use on Canada’s roadways and automobile manufacturers have indicated an interest in supplying plug–in hybrid electric and all–electric vehicles to the Canadian market, making this a near–term reality for Canadians.

2. Become aware of your driving style and modify it accordingly – Are you aggressive, rushed, average or fuel–efficient? Natural Resources Canada identifies these four driving behaviours as significant factors in fuel efficiency and driving. Aggressive drivers focus on speed, rushed drivers focus on saving time, average drivers react to changes in traffic whereas fuel– efficient drivers are always mindful of how their driving will affect their fuel consumption.

3. Think before you drive – Can you take public transit? One bus takes up to 40 cars off the road, saves as much as 70,000 litres of fuel and prevents nine tonnes of air pollutants from being emitted each year. Can you work from home? Telecommuting one day a week cuts the amount of fuel used to go to work by 20 per cent that week. Can you plan your route?

Allow for fewer stoplights, intersections and pedestrian traffic.

4. Avoid unnecessary idling – Some Canadians spend about four per cent of their annual fuel consumption idling their vehicles.

In fact, for every 10 minutes of idling one third of a litre of fuel is wasted for an average vehicle. Experts recommend turning off your engine when you are parked for more than 60 seconds, except in traffic. Also, the best way to warm up your vehicle in cold weather is to run it for two to three minutes and then drive it.

5. Maintain your vehicle – Proper tire inflation, reducing extra weight, removing roof racks and following the maintenance schedule in your vehicles owners’ manual, all help to keep your fuel consumption in check.

Although not new, idle–stop technology is gaining popularity among drivers who want to reduce their environmental footprint and cut their fuel consumption costs.

Put the spring season into full drive

(NC)—The dark days are over, and the trials and tribulations of winter driving are behind us. Gone are the icy and slushy roads and long mornings of

driveway shoveling, replaced by warmer weather and smoother conditions for your morning commute.

To keep your car going, you need to keep your tires rolling. Here are a few things to help you transition safely from winter to spring.

Remove your winter tires. While winter tires are crucial to improve tread on treacherous winter roads, when the ice melts, continued use on dry roads can wear the tires down and reduce their useful lifespan.

Ensure that the all–season tires you’re replacing them with are properly inflated and have good tread depth. Tires deflate over time, so it’s important not to assume that last summer’s wheels are still at full capacity. The ice may be gone, but road conditions remain unpredictable and

well–inflated tires will help prepare you for the unexpected.

And take a look at those winter tires – do they have another year or two left in the tank? If so, clean and dry them before storing and make sure that any salt or residue is removed to prevent further wear and tear. Store them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

If your winter tires have reached the end of the road, make proper disposal part of your spring cleaning. Through the province’s Used Tires Program, run

by Ontario Tire Stewardship, you can get rid of up to four used tires free of charge through a registered collector. These tires are then recycled and made into products such as playground surfaces, car parts, patio tiles, mouse pads and more. More information can be found online at www.ontariots.ca.

Tips for smooth spring driving Stay safe.

• Snow and ice have been replaced by puddles and mud – both of which also have the potential to create unsafe driving conditions. Keep an eye on the state of your tires and be careful about the possibility of hydroplaning, swerving and driving on uneven roads.

• Warm weather signifies that winter tire season is drawing to a close.

Extend the life of your winter tires and make driving as safe as possible by replacing them with all–season tires.

Springtime equals spring cleaning.

• Check your all–season and winter tires for tread depth and rubber condition. If they’ve reached the end of the line, drop them off free of charge at any collector registered with Ontario Tire Stewardship. More information can be found online at www.ontariots.ca.

One Person One Seatbelt Every person travelling in a motor vehicle must wear a seat belt or use a child safety seat. The penalty for seat belt infractions is a fine between $60 and $500. Convicted offenders will receive two demerit points.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring that passengers under 16 years of age are using the seat belt or an appropriate child car seat properly.

Police officers may request that passengers who appear to be at least 16 years of age provide their name, address and date of birth. These passengers may face a fine for not using or wearing a seat belt properly.

Seat Belts and the Law •

All Ontario motor vehicle drivers and passengers must wear a seat belt in a properly adjusted and securely fastened manner.

•

A driver can be charged and face a fine of $90.00 and two demerit points (plus a $20 victim surcharge) for seat belt infractions. Demerit points remain on a driving record for two years from the date of the offence.

•

All motor vehicle drivers are responsible for ensuring that all children under 16 years of age are properly secured in a seat belt or an appropriate child car seat or booster seat.

Using a seat belt is the single most effective way to reduce the chance of injury or death in a motor vehicle collision. Over 92 percent of Ontarians wear their seat belt regularly. However, those 8 percent who don’t represent over 600,000 people. It’s easy to see the difference wearing a seat belt makes — for every one percent increase in seat belt use five lives are saved.

At all times, limit the number of occupants in your vehicle to the number of seat belts.

Unbelted occupants can become projectiles during a collision and can seriously injure themselves, other passengers or the driver.

Auto care tips: Beware of rust breakouts this spring

(NC)—The signs of spring are everywhere. The flowers are starting to bloom, the grass is greener and the temperature is rising with the warm glow of the sun. Unfortunately, another rite of spring is also upon us – the attack of corrosion on our vehicles.

According to experts, with warmer temperatures comes the dreaded eyesore of vehicle corrosion.

“It’s a popular misconception that winter is the harshest season for vehicles due to snow and salted road conditions,” explained Freeman Young, president of Krown Rust Control. “While salt will accelerate the corrosion process, it’s actually the humidity and moisture that will cause rust to appear on a vehicle.

Increasingly warm temperatures have a major impact on corrosion as well, that’s why spring and summer are in fact the harshest seasons.”

According to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), the best way to keep rust from eating away at your car is to protect it annually with an application of an oil– based rust inhibitor.

“We would recommend an application of an oil–based rust protector every year for maximum protection,” said Paul Datzkiw, Approved Auto repair, consumer and technical services with CAA South Central Ontario.

George Iny, Director of the Automobile Protection Association, added that rust inhibitors such as Krown’s rust control offer “an excellent preventive measure to reduce maintenance costs over the years helping your car look better longer.”

The optimal months for the application are March through June. Here are some tips to consider as you guard against the onslaught of rust this spring.

• If you have never rust protected your vehicle, it’s not too late to start, whether rust is present already or not; • After washing your vehicle, keep the doors open to let any excess water drain out; • Unlike the outer body of your vehicle, which is protected with paint and waxes, you want to ensure that the underside of your vehicle is protected as well – spraying rust inhibitors in all crevices and folds is critical as these are the areas that are most at risk for corrosion; • Touch up any scratch-

es, dings or rock chips that have damaged the paint on your vehicle as these areas are also prone to corrosion.

• Look for an environmentally safe rust inhibitor, preferably one that has a hydrocarbon (oil) base.

• P r o tecting your car annually with a rust inhibitor helps extend the life of your vehicle and represents significant savings on future maintenance and repair costs.

• It’s important to note that a rust inhibitor also helps prevent the oxidation of wires and electric shorts that are caused by corrosion helping to keep your vehicle safe.

New ExpressPass unveiled for trucks and buses crossing the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge

T

he Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, operator of three of the four Niagara River bridges between Western New York and Southern Ontario has unveiled the new ExpressPass for trucks crossing the LewistonQueenston Bridge that will help reduce wait times for all motorists.

The first commercial automatic crossing pass of its kind on a northern border bridge, the ExpressPass program is expected to serve 270 trucking companies using some 15,000 indi-

vidual trucks and tractor- trailers that pay the one-way toll into Canada at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.

The pass also works for tour buses crossing the Rainbow Bridge, which does not handle trucks, or at Queenston. The NFBC’s third bridge, the Whirlpool Bridge, is NEXUS only.

“The new commercial ExpressPass is the fastest way through the toll booths and will help commercial vehicles operate more efficiently by reducing the time they spend crossing these

bridges,” said Lew Holloway, NFBC general manager. “When commercial trucks spend less time in line and paying tolls, it saves them time, fuel and money, while reducing overall congestion for everyone else as well.”

The ExpressPass for commercial vehicles utilizes two fully automated, unmanned toll booths. The driver pulls up to a booth and flashes the ExpressPass card – essentially a debit card – at the designated sensor. The system then deducts the appropriate amount

City of Toronto introduces new parking ticket dispute process The City of Toronto has introduced a new parking ticket dispute process that will make it easier for those who have received tickets for pay-and-display or parking meter violations to dispute tickets by using either e-mail or fax.

Motorists who have been issued tickets for parking meter/pay-anddisplay offences and who meet the cancellation criteria set out in the Parking Ticket Cancellation Guidelines may submit their ticket by fax or e-mail, together with any supporting documentation (such as a valid pay-and-display receipt), to request that their ticket be cancelled.

This process only applies to tickets that have been issued for violations that result from a broken or out of service pay-and-display machine or parking meter, pay-and-display receipts that have not been displayed properly,

or pay-and-display receipts that were printed incorrectly. It does not include parking tickets that occur during rushhour periods.

The new dispute process is a service enhancement that will impact approximately 40,000 ticket holders a year. It will provide a timely and effective way of disputing tickets that can be dealt with by the City of Toronto instead of the provincial courts, as well as providing a greater convenience to motorists.

Currently, the parking ticket dispute process requires individuals to attend one of four First Appearance Facilities (parking ticket payment counters) in person to dispute any type of parking violation. Motorists can now dispute tickets issued for parking meter or pay-and-display violations by either fax or e-mail, or in-person at a First Appearance Facility.

Drivers reminded to adjust headrests (NC)—While buckling seatbelts is second nature when getting into a car – how many of us think to adjust the headrest? Reports show that headrests are one of the most overlooked safety features in motor vehicles today and many don’t realize the important role they play in preventing neck, brain and spinal cord related injuries.

“Headrests are designed to work alongside the seatbelt so that when an accident occurs it prevents the head from twisting backwards, which subsequently results in whiplash,” explains Mauro Convertini, an insurance and claims expert at Aviva Canada. “Drivers can sustain an injury from an incorrectly adjusted headrest even at speeds as low as 15 kilometres per hour – the same speed as the average bicycle.”

According to an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, only 14 per cent of drivers on the road have their headrest in the proper position. And whiplash being the most common soft tissue in-

jury incurred during auto collisions underlines the importance for all passengers to ensure their headrest is adjusted properly.

Aviva’s Convertini recommends that Canadian drivers follow three simple steps in order to prevent injuries associated with improper headrest position: 1. The top of the headrest should be in a straight line with the top of your head.

2. Position the centre of your headrest so that it is slightly above the top of the ear.

3. Ensure that the distance between the headrest and the back of the head is between five and ten centimetres.

Vehicle modifications can affect insurance premiums (NC)—Every day we see them on our streets – customized vehicles with non–stock spoilers, enhanced engines, raised suspensions and the like. Needless to say, the post–manufacturer auto modification business is booming.

But while adding performance parts and ‘styling’ features to your vehicle can give it a distinct appearance and improve performance, it may also impact your auto insurance. So before you add a turbo– charged engine or even tint your windows, it is a good idea to contact your insurance broker or insurer to make certain you have the right coverage.

Insurance expert Mauro Convertini from Aviva Canada, points out how vehicle modifications can

increase risk and premiums as a result. He explains, “Certain modifications can put motorists at a greater risk of having a collision, such as a lowered or raised suspension, or increasing the size of your engine.

Your vehicle could become untrustworthy on the road and impact your safety as well as your access to coverage.”

Even modifications you would expect to better the insurance risk of your vehicle, like an improved brake system, may still increase the cost of insurance for the following reasons: • The modifications might increase the value of the vehicle, therefore increasing claims costs.

• Modified vehicles often are more attractive to

thieves increasing the risk of theft.

• Vehicles with performance modifications generally mean that the performance of the vehicle is improved which can lead to more severe accidents.

Remember an insurer could refuse to pay a claim and even leave you uninsured if you have not disclosed modifications to your vehicle. So before you invest time and money on a project that could raise your premium, call your broker or insurance company and verify that your insurance will remain valid.

Changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program Effective April 1 H

uman Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada are updating the Temporary Foreign Worker Program that fleets have been using to tackle shortages of long-haul truck drivers.

The changes to the related Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, which came into force on April 1, will address: • Genuineness of job offers – This will involve assessing an employer’s ability to meet the terms of a job offer; determining if the business is legitimate and actively engaged in the province in which a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) is submitted; and verifying that the job offer is consistent with the employer’s reasonable employment needs. Reviews will also need to determine that employers and third-

ith a focus on continuous improvement, Mack Trucks has introduced a series of enhancements to its MACK Granite conventional straight trucks and the heavy-haul Titan by Mack model. The announcements were made at the 2011 CONEXPOCON/AGG show in Las Vegas.

Building on the success of the top-selling heavy-duty Class 8 conventional straight truck in the United States, Mack debuted a medium-heavy duty version of

its Granite model. The Granite Medium-Heavy Duty (MHD) is designed to meet the needs of customers, like some municipalities, who don’t put their trucks through all the rigors Granite models can handle – customers for whom a lighter spec gets the job done.

The Granite MHD is available in both axle-forward and axleback configurations, is powered by a Cummins ISL9 EPA 2010certified engine and is offered with an Eaton manual or Allison

automatic transmission.

Mack also announced that both its Granite Axle Forward and Granite Axle Back models can now be ordered with a 36inch flat-top sleeper equipped with a 30 by 80-inch mattress, curtain, bunk restraint, under bunk storage and cup holder – as well as rear and side window options.

Further enhancements to the Mack Granite series include a new headliner console, optional one-piece windshield, and updated Champion Level trim package with button-tuck vinyl and ultra leather seats that delivers the comfort and styling drivers desire at no extra charge over its predecessor.

The new Champion Level trim package and one-piece windshield are also available in the Titan by Mack model. A cab-mounted exhaust option available in all Granite models and a clear back-of-cab assist Mack body builder partners.

Customers also now have a new Allison automatic transmission option – the 3000 series – for the Granite model.

Veterans’ Plate Now Available for Motorcycles

To recognize their courage and dedication, Ontario veterans can now get a veterans’ licence plate for motorcycles.

Like the veterans’ passenger vehicle plate, this new motorcycle plate recognizes the commitment made by past and current veterans, including those who served: • During WWII and the Korean

War • In peacekeeping missions and • At least three or more years with the Canadian Regular Forces.

The licence plate features a red poppy with the word “veteran” and there are already more than 34,000 veteran passenger vehicle plates in Ontario.

This announcement builds on other initiatives that recognize the courage of veterans, including dedicating the “Highway of Heroes” along Highway 401 between Trenton and the intersection of the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 404 in Toronto.

ino Trucks unveiled a revolutionary addition to its product lineup during the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. Hino will offer four models of the newly designed Class 4 and Class 5 cab over engine (COE) trucks.

In the class 4 market, Hino will offer the 155 diesel model and the first ever U.S. class 4 diesel-electric hybrid model, the 155h. The 155 and 155h models will carry a 14,500 lb. GVW rating. In the class 5 market, Hino will offer the 195 diesel model and the first ever U.S. class 5 diesel-electric hybrid model, the 195h. The 195 and 195h models will carry a 19,500 lb. GVW rating.

“The new cab over line-up is an exciting addition to the Hino Trucks brand as we strive to provide our customers with a comprehensive offering for their trucking needs,” said Sumio Fukaya, President and CEO of Hino Trucks.

All models are powered by the Hino

J05E Series engine. The 5-liter engine is rated at 210 hp and 440 lb. ft. of torque.

Utilizing Aisin’s A465, 6-speed automatic transmission, the Hino hybrid is the first to be packaged with an automatic transmission.

Both models feature an ergonomically friendly wide cab with a North American standard 33-inch frame rail width, a 56,900 PSI frame, and a standard center mounted rear fuel tank. The cab’s styling emphasizes aerodynamics and visibility with an angled windshield, narrow pillars and roundedradius curves. Inside, the new cab uses its increased width to provide room for drivers up to 6 ft. 6 in. tall, seating for three and a versatile mobile workspace with a variety of organizational storage options. A crew cab version will also be available.

In addition to a Diesel-Electric Hybrid option, both models meet or exceed EPA 2012 emission regulations by utilizing an optimized SCR system.

Peel Police Spring Seatbelt Campaign Starting Wednesday, April 13, 2011, Peel Regional Police will be working with other police services across the province in the Spring Seatbelt Enforcement Campaign, which will run until Saturday, April 23, 2011.

The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness about the importance of wearing seatbelts, and educating drivers on the proper use of child-care and booster seats.

During the campaign, uniformed officers from all five Divisions and Traffic Services will intensify enforcement with relation to seatbelts and child seats.

Conviction on a seatbelt infraction results in a total payable fine of $240.00

and two demerit points. While seatbelt use is encouraged at all times, this campaign provides the opportunity to combine enforcement and education initiatives.

History has shown that the use of seatbelts has proven to be the single most effective way to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities. Peel Regional Police’s Traffic Services hopes to reduce the likelihood of serious injury, or death, resulting from a failure to buckle-up. As such, we would like to remind everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility and it starts with you.
