Home Alone for the Holidays?

Give Yourself the Gift of a Learning Adventure

The holidays traditionally are a season of gift giving, decorating and sharing special meals with friends and family. But times are changing. With today’s modern families spread across the globe, it’s harder than ever to get the whole family together. For many older adults, the season of merry and bright also can be a reminder of loved ones and friends who are no longer with you, leaving you feeling lonely and isolated.

So, what about starting something new? Creating a new holiday tradition? Road Scholar has made the holidays a time of exploration and learning for many seniors traveling solo, with friends or with the grandkids and the whole family.

Holiday customs and celebrations are unique depending on where you go, so the winter season is the perfect time to learn about a new place or culture. It’s a great time to make new discoveries close to home and across the globe, creating new memories and experiences you’ll never forget.

Experience holiday traditions on a riverboat voyage from Vienna to Munich. In Italy, attend local concerts in Sorrento, taste Umbrian cuisine in Assisi or enjoy the Christmas markets in Rome. If it’s not possible to leave home, you can still explore the world through one of our online learning adventures.

For Judith from New York City, Road Scholar Class of ’18, ringing in the New Year in Paris gave her a sense of connection and community during a time that she may have felt alone.

“Paris and New Year’s is the perfect trip. The great itinerary, superb program instructor and all the wonderful experiences remain with me. I enjoyed meeting other travelers and always felt part of the group as a solo traveler. Exploring the Île de la Cité and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris was an extraordinary architectural adventure.”

Lynn from Eagle Point, Ore., Road Scholar Class of ’16, said, “There’s nothing quite like New York City for Christmas. From the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall to the festive decorations of Rockefeller Plaza, you will find your holiday spirit.”

Spending the holidays on a learning adventure isn’t just a good idea — it’s a great idea. With the New Year just around the corner, it’s time to explore ways to turn the holiday season into a time of discovery and learning.
