WILDLIFE ON THE ROAD Be aware that roaming animals such as kangaroos, cattle, camels and even large birds can settle or cross on the road in front of your vehicle. Animals on the road can be unpredictable. Sometimes, they head towards your vehicle rather than away from it. • Slow down. Allow time to brake. • Sound your horn. If it is safe to do so, drive slowly around them. • Do not try to swerve around an animal at speed. This can cause you to collide with other vehicles or lose control on the gravel verge. More than 7,000 collisions with kangaroos occur in Australia every year. They can inflict significant damage when the vehicle is travelling at speed. About 15% of vehicles involved are written off. The risk is highest when they are most active at sunrise and sunset. Kangaroos are particularly active in winter. While driving, look as far ahead as you can – and off to both sides of the road to detect animal movement.
