Skegness RNLI celebrates training achievements of dedicated crew The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Skegness is proud to announce the successful completion of various training milestones by its volunteer crew members.

Alex Collins has achieved the significant accomplishment of completing his Shore Crew plan, encompassing 26 different competencies across the launch and recovery of both the all-weather and inshore lifeboats. His efforts have now paved the way for him to advance as trainee crew on both lifeboats at the station.

Ellie Mae Barnfield also deserves commendation, having finalised numerous modules on her training plan for the inshore lifeboat (ILB).

Adding to the list of achievements, Jaiden Elson and Alex Collins recently completed their Crew Emergency Procedures course at the RNLI College in Poole, a critical course for those aspiring to become crew on both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats.

RNLI Skegness successful Stormy Stan’s Tour raises an impressive £7,000 The tour, which took place over the summer season, visited various venues across Skegness, Ingoldmells, and Chapel St Leonards.

Throughout these events, the team was welcomed into venues with opportunities to share crucial safety messages and fundraise for the lifeboat station.

Organised by Brad Johnson, one of the station’s Deputy Launching Authorities, the volunteer crew team hit the road seven times between June and October.

Throughout the season, the Pubs & Clubs team included volunteers crew membersAlex Collins, Jaiden Elson, Alan Gordon-Griffiths, Ryan Speed, Lyz Thein, Craig Hopkins, Ellie Mae-Barnfield, James Porter, Lewis Knight, Tony Johnson and Adam Kendrick.

The average cost to train an RNLI crew member is approximately £1,400 so it’s fantastic news that the generosity

of visitors to the area will allow the station to train a further four members of the volunteer crew, contributing to the lifesaving future along the Lincolnshire coastline.

‘We are incredibly proud of our efforts this season,’ said Brad Johnson, Deputy Launching Authority. ‘I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the venues who welcomed us and the volunteer crew who gave up their times to support the tour.

Your kindness and support have helped us raise vital funds and share important safety information. We look forward to continuing this success next season with even more dates and an earlier start.’

Skegness RNLI celebrates success as three volunteers pass out as Helms Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station is thrilled to announce the successful pass-outs of three dedicated volunteer crew members who have Ryan Speed, Billy Brookes, and Curtis Redford have completed their rigorous training and assessments to take command of this highly manoeuvrable inshore lifeboat, providing Skegness with three more qualified Helms to provide cover along the East Lincolnshire coastline.

Becoming a helm of an inshore lifeboat is no small feat and involves extensive training, specialised command-focussed exercises, and a final assessment by an external RNLI Assessor.

This demanding journey typically spans around two years, during which the candidates hone their skills to operate the D class inshore lifeboat, a vital asset that performs rescues in surf, shallow waters, and confined locations, close to the shore.

Ryan Speed, Billy Brookes, and Curtis Redford have all made remarkable progress since joining the crew in 2019, 2019, and 2020, respectively. They started as Shore Crew members and then advanced to become crew members for the Shannon class lifeboat before most recently reaching the coveted position of Helm on the D class inshore lifeboat.

Ryan and Billy are further advancing as Trainee Navigators on the Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, while Curtis is in the process of becoming a recognised RNLI Paramedic, lending his expertise from his role as a Paramedic with the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Expressing their gratitude for the training they received, Ryan, Billy, and Curtis collectively said: ‘We want to extend our thanks to the station and our fellow Helms for the support and guidance throughout our training journey.

‘We are proud to reach this milestone and eagerly anticipate putting our training into practice on exercises and service launches. The RNLI Assessor Trainers who guided us played a crucial role in our development, and we are immensely grateful to Craig, Lee, Joe, Ady, Gary and Anna for their time and expertise. Volunteering for this incredible charity is an honour, and we are thrilled that our hard work has paid off.’

Paul Simpson, the Lifeboat Operations Manager at Skegness RNLI, added, ‘Becoming a Helm and commanding one of our lifeboats is no easy task. A successful pass-out is a testament to the many months of hard work and determination that has taken place. RNLI Skegness and Humber launch to vessel in distress off Skegness Skegness’ all-weather lifeboat launched in response to a distress call from a lone vessel operator situated east of Skegness in the early evening of Friday 10 November 2023.

The request for assistance occurred on the early evening of 10 November 2023, resulting in a service launch commencing at approximately 5:00 pm, lasting into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The distress call originated from a 75foot motor vessel located approximately two miles east of Skegness. Humber Coastguard tasked Skegness RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat, The Joel and April Grunnill, after expressing concerns for the vessel’s seaworthiness and inability to continue on with its passage south.

‘As a vessel operator taking action in a timely manner is paramount in ensuring the safety of both the crew and the vessel.’ explained Lee St Quinton, Deputy Second Coxswain at RNLI Skegness.

Two volunteer crew members were deployed to the vessel to provide assistance in resolving the generator issue. During the search and rescue operation, the vessel experienced later steering problems, causing it to drift closer to a wind farm.

With clear evening skies and moderate sea conditions at launch, the all-weather lifeboat’s highly-trained volunteer crew, led by Deputy 2nd Coxswain Lee St Quinton, navigated to the distressed vessel’s location, and the lifeboat arrived on the scene at approximately 5:30 pm.

Upon reaching the distressed vessel, it was determined that intervention was necessary to address the equipment malfunction on board the vessel.

The initial plan was to escort the vessel under its own power to the nearby safe haven, however, considering the vessel’s worsening condition, darkness, and the sea conditions, the coxswain, Lee St Quinton, decided that towing the craft would be the safer alternative to prevent any potential collisions with obstacles or other vessels.

For many, wearing two hats, both of which come with considerable pressure at times, might seem like a colossal task, but it’s a testament to efficient teamwork, training and planning: ‘Every day, you pivot between roles. But with a robust team backing you, the ship, metaphorically and literally, always sails smoothly.’

Lee explains the initiative’s approach: ‘Phase one is about proactive engagement. We ensure safety messages, like the Sandi Starfish wristbands, are widespread. The second phase is reactive, springing into action during emergencies, especially when missing individuals are involved.’

Lee advises anyone considering joining the emergency services: ‘Reach out, immerse yourself. Experience the camaraderie because serving as a volunteer with the RNLI is not a job; it’s a commitment.’

Skegness RNLI announces Curtis Redford as a recognised RNLI Paramedic Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station is delighted to announce that Curtis Redford has officially become a recognised Paramedic for the lifeboat station.

This significant advancement underscores the station’s commitment to providing the highest level of casualty care in its lifesaving efforts.

Curtis, currently working as the Associate Divisional Clinical Lead and Paramedic for Mid Lincolnshire with the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the RNLI Skegness team where he is a volunteer D class inshore lifeboat Helm.

His expertise as a Qualified Paramedic with the National Health Service (NHS) is an invaluable addition to the station’s capabilities.

In his new voluntary role at Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station, Curtis will work closely with the eleven other Casualty Carers. Combining his skills as a qualified RNLI Casualty Carer and a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) qualified Paramedic, Curtis is set to bolster the station’s capacity for delivering a high-level of casualty care.

Curtis shared his enthusiasm about his new role, stating, ‘I am thrilled to be able to utilise my professional training and experience from the NHS in my voluntary role with Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station. It’s a unique opportunity to contribute to the community and make a real difference in people’s lives.’

Generations of RNLI lifesavers on call this Christmas at Skegness RNLI The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is launching its annual Christmas fundraising appeal, with a focus on the generations of families who have volunteered their time and commitment 24/7, 365 days a year, to ensure the charity’s lifesaving service has continued for nearly 200 years.

Current family connections A long history of families have volunteered at Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station over the years. Today, two operational family connections still exist. Father and son, Steve and Matt Jackson currently both volunteer with the lifeboat station as Head Launcher and Inshore Lifeboat Helm respectively, with Matt’s young children already showing interest in joining the crew when they reach 18.

A family legacy lasting two centuries The Grunnill family has been synonymous with Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station since 1831, with their legacy continuing today through the current Shannon class lifeboat’s name, the Joel and April Grunnill.

The Grunnill family’s unparalleled commitment and heroism have left an indelible mark on the Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station and its community.

In subsequent generations, Jabez, Henry, Charles, Francis, Alfred, Matthew, Montague, Walter, Wilf, Alan, Hedley, Percy, and Lance Grunnill continued the tradition, serving in various capacities and earning accolades, including Silver Medals from the King of Norway. Joel Grunnill MBE, representing the last of the family line, retired in 1984 after 45 years, concluding nearly 160 years of continuous service by the Grunnills. Joel, involved from a young age, became 2nd Coxswain in 1951 and participated in numerous rescues, recusing 197 people.

Joel held various accolades for his service including an RNLI Silver Badge in 2001, MBE in 2008 and RNLI Long Service Medal.

After retiring, he continued supporting the RNLI and the Skegness community.

Celebrating a spectacular December at RNLI Skegness RNLI Skegness Lifeboat Station is celebrating another successful December full of festive events, community engagement, and heartwarming contributions.

As the station wraps up the month and year, the spirit of giving and joy was truly felt across various events were hosted both at the station as well as in the community.

Santa Fun Run in association with The Rotary Club On Sunday, 3 December, over 150 participants dressed as Santa made a dash from our Boathouse in Skegness for a 5km fun run. This event, organised in partnership with the Rotary Club, saw Santas of all ages running, walking, and enjoying the route that passed by the station’s allweather lifeboat and around Skegness. The total funds raised will be announced by the Rotary Club in the new year.

Mulled Wine and Carols at the Boathouse The annual free Mulled Wine and Carols event, also held on Sunday, 3 December, was a resounding success. Hosted at the Boathouse, this non-fundraising thank you event surprisingly raised over £175, thanks to the generosity of those who attended. A special thank you to the ‘Just Sing Choir’ for their delightful performance and making the morning truly memorable.

Crew Led Toy Drive The now annual, Crew Led Toy Drive was a heartwarming and overwhelming success, with an truly staggering amount of toys donated for the Storehouse Food Bank in Skegness and the Derbyshire Miner’s Children’s Centre. The generosity surpassed last year’s drive, and the crew are excited to announce its return next year, with an additional beneficiary – the Pilgrim Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

Stormy and Santa’s Christmas Hideout The Stormy and Santa’s Christmas Hideout at the Hideout Café and Bar was a magical experience for families. This event featured Santa, Buddy the Elf, Stormy Stan, and Goldie from Blue Anchor Leisure. It was not just an opportunity for family fun with opportunities to meet the characters, but also a chance to contribute to the station, as the venue made a donation from the ticket sales.

The station wishes to thank Blue Anchor Leisure for donating their team to support the event and Carl at The Hideout Café and Bar for supporting this event and the toy drive.

The Alma Avenue Switch On Once again, Adrian and his family made a huge impact with their ever-growing light display on Alma Avenue in Skegness. The one again chose RNLI Skegness as their charity and members of the lifeboat station attended the switch on towards the end of November. This was well attended by the community and the station looks forward to seeing how much is raised at the end of the festive period.

The amazing Neverland Theatre on Prince George Street has welcomed our mascot Stormy Stan to star in Panto for a second year!

This year’s show is Peter Pan, and Stormy will be taking to the stage towards to end of each show. Gary Starr and the theatre has agreed to fundraising for RNLI Skegness throughout their whole production run of Peter Pan throughout the festive period.

In December 2023, at the station’s Christmas Party, Wiggy received a special medal, recognising his three decades of selfless service from Lifeboat Operations Manager Paul Simpson. He is also set to receive a retirement vellum from the charity, honouring his years of voluntary service.
