ON YOUR MARKS… Fostering a love of sport and active living As an Old Cothillian, it is a privilege to be serving as Headmaster as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the school in 2020.

My Cothill experience as a young boy was completely transformative, and I have extraordinarily happy memories of my time here.

Today, I am immensely proud that Cothill is recognised as one of the leading prepartory schools in the UK, but like all great schools we must continue to evolve in order to provide the very best learning experience for our boys.

Our goal is to revolutionise our sports offer to the benefit every boy at the school.

Therefore, to mark our 150th anniversary, Cothill has initiated its first major fundraising campaign so that we can build a new indoor Sports Centre.

As part of our campaign, we are also creating The Cothill Bursary Fund, which will provide bursaries for boys who might not otherwise be able to benefit from a Cothill education.

Our plans will have a significant impact on each and every boy but can only be achieved with the support of our parents, alumni and friends.

We are delighted to have already received many generous donations. I look forward to seeing our dream become a reality with your help and encouragement.

Throughout its history, Cothill has recognised the important contribution that games, physical activity and sports make to an all-round education. This continues to be at the heart of the Cothill experience today.

Experts tell us that it is essential that children are offered a variety of sports options in order to fire their imagination and thereby create a far greater chance of their long-term participation in sport.

At Cothill, our vision is to ensure that every boy can find a sport or game that they can enjoy and take part in, thus instilling a physical confidence for life.

To achieve this, we plan to create an indoor Sports Centre which will take the boys’ experience of sport - whatever their ability - from excellent to exceptional.

SPORTING FOUNDATIONS History of sport at Cothill Our records show that three tennis courts and a golf course were created in 1924 (to be looked after by the boys) and a new hall was built in 1933. Today a strong sport ethic is central to Cothill, with particular success achieved in outdoor sports: rugby, tennis, cricket and football.

Set immediately next to the school, with adjacent parking for parents and visiting teams, the new indoor Sports Centre has been designed to be fully accessible for all users.

Designed by Edgington Spink & Hine, the building has been carefully conceived to sit within our beautiful rural surroundings and to respect the protected habitats bordering the grounds.

SPORTING VARIETY Our bespoke indoor Sports Centre will enable the boys to develop fresh skills and opportunities for success in a whole range of new indoor sports.

Exceptional facilities Created to meet Sport England guidelines, the new Centre will have a large main hall (accommodating four badminton courts or a single tennis court); a second smaller hall; a squash court and an indoor climbing wall as well as new changing facilities and increased storage space. Our current indoor provision (the New Hall) has a stage that takes up much of the usable floor space and is neither the appropriate size nor the right height, limiting even the most common sports, including badminton and indoor football.

Multiple sports Sports that can be played in the new Centre will include badminton, squash, indoor hockey, handball, volleyball, indoor cricket nets, five-a side-football, basketball, tennis, martial arts, archery, fencing, gymnastics, athletics, table tennis, trampolining, indoor climbing and more.

GO! Realising the vision Cost The estimated cost of the Sports Centre is £6m. The school has already secured £1.9m of this through generous donations and a contribution from the Cothill Trust. Our challenge now is to raise the remaining £4.1m through further philanthropic support.

PIONEER SUPPORT: CRITICAL TO SUCCESS While many will give to an emerging success, it is the entrepreneurial donors those who give early on - who breathe life into a campaign.

Pioneer phase target We aim to raise ÂŁ4M in pioneer pledges before we promote the campaign to the whole Cothill community of parents, alumni and friends, because we believe that with two-thirds of the overall target committed, we stand a much greater chance of inspiring the wider support that will then bring us over the line.

In-principle support While we welcome actual donations, we are very happy to accept pledges, on the basis that we will only ask individuals to redeem their these commitments once there is complete certainty that the project will go ahead.

Communication We will keep our pioneers informed of progress, updating them on design details, costs and timings. This will include information about the progress of the fundraising.

Our charitable status Cothill House has been established for 150 years and is a leading educational charity that aims to provide a prep school education that is second to none, while keeping fees within reasonable limits, and providing support for boys who might not otherwise be able to attend the school. Within this context we have made the most of our existing our resources and been able to make improvements to the school over time, including a recent new boarding house developement. Cothill House is part of the Cothill Trust (Reg. Charity No. 309639).Â
