The Robert Morris Colonials kick off the 2012-2013 Atlantic Hockey playoffs with a first-round series against the Sacred Heart Pioneers this weekend. The series is scheduled to begin on Friday evening with game number two scheduled for Saturday night, both at 7:05 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it will be played on Sunday evening at 7:05 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT This past weekend, the Colonials closed out the regular season with a home-and-home series against instate rival Mercyhurst. In a series that would determine the finals standings in the conference, the two teams would skate to ties in both contests. After honoring the team’s five seniors on Friday night, the Colonials and Lakers would battle to a 3-3 tie. RMU would jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Scott Jacklin and Adam Brace before Mercyhurst would come back with three consecutive goals to take the lead after two periods. Colin South would tie the game in the third period for Robert Morris as five minutes of overtime would decide nothing as the contest ended in a 3-3 time. The two rivals would meet again the next night in Erie Pa. and skate to a 1-1 tie. Mercyhurst would open the scoring in the second period before freshman Zac Lynch would tie the game in the final five minutes of the third period while on the power play. Even as the Lakers would pull the goalie in final minute, the two teams would again skate to a draw. ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS The Colonials are averaging 3.06 goals per game while the team has allowed an average of 2.79 goals per game to their opponents. Eric Levine sits first all-time in career save percentage (.925), career goalsagainst average (2.71) and career shutouts (5). Levine’s four shutouts this season has the goaltender third in the NCAA with seven other netminders. Adam Brace leads Robert Morris with 22 assists and 35 points while the senior is closing in on 50 career goals as he needs five goals to reach the milestone. Cody Wydo has scored a team-high 17 goals this season as the sophomore closes in on 50 career points as he needs just three more points to reach the milestone. Both Brace and Wydo sit first in the nation with five other skaters as both of the forwards scoring three shorthanded goals this season. Wydo’s five game-winning goals this season has him just one away from the NCAA lead as he currently sits in fifth place with six other skaters. Senior Brendan Jamison was named one of the ten finalists for the Senior CLASS Award for the 2012-2013 season. Jamison, the first native of Pittsburgh to be named captain of the Colonials, currently sits sixth in the fan portion of the voting that ends March 25. A trio of Robert Morris seniors - Adam Brace, Zach Hervato, and Eric Levine - were nominated for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player. Fan voting on the preliminary ballot concludes on March 10. The Colonials have dedicated this season to former captain Chris Kushneriuk who is currently battling cancer. Robert Morris has partnered with the Bakersfield Condors and the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL to raise awareness for men’s cancer and help Chris with his current battle. Together, the teams have raised over $20,000 to benefit Kushneriuk. THE ATLANTIC HOCKEY PLAYOFF PICTURE Finishing the regular season with an overall record of 18-12-4, the Colonials finished in fifth place with a conference record of 13-11-3 which was good enough for 29 points. Including RMU hosting Sacred Heart, the other first-round series included Army at Mercyhurst, Bentley at Canisius, and American International at RIT. Niagara would run away with the conference title as Air Force finished in second followed by Holy Cross and Connecticut. If the Colonials are to advance in to the quarterfinals, they will travel to the fourth-seeded Connecticut. If Sacred Heart pulls out the upset, the Pioneers would have to take on nationally-ranked Niagara in the quarterfinals.
