The Robert Morris Colonials kick off the 2012-2013 Atlantic Hockey playoffs with a first-round series against the Sacred Heart Pioneers this weekend. The series is scheduled to begin on Friday evening with game number two scheduled for Saturday night, both at 7:05 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it will be played on Sunday evening at 7:05 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT This past weekend, the Colonials closed out the regular season with a home-and-home series against instate rival Mercyhurst. In a series that would determine the finals standings in the conference, the two teams would skate to ties in both contests. After honoring the team’s five seniors on Friday night, the Colonials and Lakers would battle to a 3-3 tie. RMU would jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Scott Jacklin and Adam Brace before Mercyhurst would come back with three consecutive goals to take the lead after two periods. Colin South would tie the game in the third period for Robert Morris as five minutes of overtime would decide nothing as the contest ended in a 3-3 time. The two rivals would meet again the next night in Erie Pa. and skate to a 1-1 tie. Mercyhurst would open the scoring in the second period before freshman Zac Lynch would tie the game in the final five minutes of the third period while on the power play. Even as the Lakers would pull the goalie in final minute, the two teams would again skate to a draw. ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS The Colonials are averaging 3.06 goals per game while the team has allowed an average of 2.79 goals per game to their opponents. Eric Levine sits first all-time in career save percentage (.925), career goalsagainst average (2.71) and career shutouts (5). Levine’s four shutouts this season has the goaltender third in the NCAA with seven other netminders. Adam Brace leads Robert Morris with 22 assists and 35 points while the senior is closing in on 50 career goals as he needs five goals to reach the milestone. Cody Wydo has scored a team-high 17 goals this season as the sophomore closes in on 50 career points as he needs just three more points to reach the milestone. Both Brace and Wydo sit first in the nation with five other skaters as both of the forwards scoring three shorthanded goals this season. Wydo’s five game-winning goals this season has him just one away from the NCAA lead as he currently sits in fifth place with six other skaters. Senior Brendan Jamison was named one of the ten finalists for the Senior CLASS Award for the 2012-2013 season. Jamison, the first native of Pittsburgh to be named captain of the Colonials, currently sits sixth in the fan portion of the voting that ends March 25. A trio of Robert Morris seniors - Adam Brace, Zach Hervato, and Eric Levine - were nominated for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player. Fan voting on the preliminary ballot concludes on March 10. The Colonials have dedicated this season to former captain Chris Kushneriuk who is currently battling cancer. Robert Morris has partnered with the Bakersfield Condors and the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL to raise awareness for men’s cancer and help Chris with his current battle. Together, the teams have raised over $20,000 to benefit Kushneriuk. THE ATLANTIC HOCKEY PLAYOFF PICTURE Finishing the regular season with an overall record of 18-12-4, the Colonials finished in fifth place with a conference record of 13-11-3 which was good enough for 29 points. Including RMU hosting Sacred Heart, the other first-round series included Army at Mercyhurst, Bentley at Canisius, and American International at RIT. Niagara would run away with the conference title as Air Force finished in second followed by Holy Cross and Connecticut. If the Colonials are to advance in to the quarterfinals, they will travel to the fourth-seeded Connecticut. If Sacred Heart pulls out the upset, the Pioneers would have to take on nationally-ranked Niagara in the quarterfinals. KRUSHING CANCER Former Robert Morris Colonial captain Chris Kushneriuk is often remembered as a player that would put his teammates before himself. After the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, Kushneriuk got the news that he had cancer. The native of Ottawa, Ontario is currently receiving treatment in Indianapolis, Indiana. Along with the men’s hockey team at Robert Morris, the Wheeling Nailers and Bakersfield Condors have also contributed fundraising efforts to Kushneriuk’s cause. At the remaining home games, the team will be selling wristbands and shirts to help RMU Krush Cancer. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Brendan Jamison serves as captain with Tyler Hinds working as the assistant captain. Jamison becomes the first Pittsburgh-born captain in the nine-year history of the Program. Zach Hervato and Colin South were recently named assistant captains before the Colonials took on RIT. Hervato will serve as the second assistant during all road contests while South will wear the “A” during all games at home. YOUTH OF THE NATION This season, 16 of the 27 student-athletes on the roster will be playing in their first or second season of NCAA hockey. The Colonials have five returning seniors on the roster after graduating ten seniors from the previous season. NO PLACE LIKE HOME Robert Morris was 11-6-2 at home during the 20112012 season. Since the Colonials have joined Atlantic Hockey, Robert Morris is 27-13-7 on home ice. The Colonials have had only two seasons in which they have been under .500 at home, the 2004-2005 season and the 2009-2010 season. So far this season, RMU has gone 7-5-2 at the 84 Lumber Arena heading in to the playoff series this weekend. PACKING THE LUMBER YARD Since Robert Morris joined the Atlantic Hockey Association in the 2011-2012 season, 84 Lumber Arena has been sold out on six different occasions. An average of just under 1,000 fans have been in attendence for the home games of the 2012-2013 season, including sellouts against Air Force on Oct. 27 and the record-setting crowd of 1,589 that saw the Colonials host Ohio State on Dec. 8. SPECIAL TEAMS Wins often come with good special teams play. This season, Robert Morris is 11-2-3 when recording either a power-play or short-handed goal. In four games this year the Colonials have scored a goal with both special team units. Of the nine shorthanded goals, senior Adam Brace and sophomore Cody Wydo have each netted three. When scoring a short-handed goal, Robert Morris is 7-1-0 and the team holds a record of 9-1-3 when scoring on the power play.

ROAD WOES Robert Morris is just below .500 on the road since the team joined the Atlantic Hockey Association with a record of 22-25-7 as the squad plays in its third season as a member of the AHA. The Colonials have never had a winning record on the road, but this season RMU is currently 9-7-2 as the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs start. The most prolific of the seven road victories this season came in the opening weekend of play as the Colonials shut out a nationally ranked Quinnipiac team. The Colonials also picked up their first ever win at RIT and the first win on the road against Canisius since the 2006-2007 season. Robert Morris then continued by downing a pair of future Big Ten members in Ohio State and Penn State. RMU skated in to Columbus, Ohio and took down the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 3-2 on Dec. 7. and then went to Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions by a score of 3-2 as well. However, in 2013 the Colonials are 3-5-0 having split series with Army and American International before being losing both games at Air Force and a loss at nationally-ranked Niagara. The Colonials got back on track with their second victory of the season at Canisius before skating to a 1-1 tie with Mercyhurst in the final regular-season game. QUICK STARTS The Colonials have registered a goal within the first five minutes of a period on 21 different occasions in 15 of the team’s 34 games. In games when the Colonials have scored an early goal in a period, RMU is 10-4-1. BOUNCING BACK Despite losing 12 games this season, Robert Morris has only suffered consecutive losses two times over the course of their schedule so far. The Colonials are 10-2-0 after being swept by Air Force and suffering back-to-back losses to RIT and Niagara. RMU has outscored its opponents 49-29 in the game following a loss. IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL Robert Morris will play its 11th consecutive week of hockey that began with the inaugural Three Rivers Classic at the end of December. The first-round playoff series against Sacred Heart comes after ten straight weeks of the Colonials playing at least two games during the regular season. NEW YEAR, NEW PROBLEMS Since Robert Morris joined the Atlantic Hockey Association, the Colonials are 23-25-8 in the months of January, February, and March. This season, RMU is 9-8-2 since the new year. Out of the three months, the Colonials have played their best hockey in February when the team has gone 12-9-3 in the first two years of their AHA membership. Before the new year arrives, the Colonials are 31-17-6 in the first three months of the season.

SCORING LINE Back together for the second this season, the top line of Wydo-Jacklin-Brace has combined for 83 points (40 goals, 43 assists) so far this season accounting for over 30 percent of the team’s point production. In games when the trio has skated on the same line, the Colonials have a record of 11-7-3. The line has come up big with the game on the line as it has combined for seven power-play goals, seven short-handed goals, and seven game-winning goals.

LEVINE SURPASSES 2,000 SAVES Senior goaltender Eric Levine became the third goaltender in school history to reach the 2,000-saves as he reached the milestone during the game against Canisius on February 23, 2013. Before Levine reached 2,000 saves, the most recent goaltender to reach the mark was Brooks Ostergard as he finished his career with 2,776 saves, the second most in program history. Levine currently ranks third on the career saves list. Christian Boucher holds the career saves record with 3,244 saves over his four-year career that started with Robert Morris’ first year of hockey in 2004. MEN OF THE CENTURY Robert Morris has three players who have competed in at least 100 games during their NCAA career. Both Adam Brace and Brendan Jamison have each played in 129 contests during their careers. Brace played in 33 of those game during his freshman season with Canisius before transferring to Robert Morris. The most recent Colonial to surpass the century mark was Zach Hervato as he played in game 100 against Niagara on Nov. 17. With a guarantee of at least two playoff games for the Colonials, two more student-athletes could join the century club. Junior forward Colin South and senior assistant captain Tyler Hinds have both played in 98 career contests.

ROCK SOLID Senior Eric Levine inhereted the starting position from 2012 graduate Brooks Ostergard and stepped into his new role quickly. Coming into the season, Levine had seen action in 37 games while playing in no more than thirteen games in a single season. In his second start of the season, Levine would record the program’s first shutout of a ranked opponent with a 48-save performance against #18 ranked Quinnipiac on Oct. 14. The 48-save effort ranked as the fourth most saves by a Colonial goaltender. Levine holds four of the top five single-save performances including a career and program high 58 saves. Levine posted back-to-back shutout in the inaugural Three Rivers Classic as he blanked Penn State while seeing 48 shots and #5 ranked Miami University the following evening by stopping all 51 shots he faced. Levine’s career goals against average of 2.71 and his career save percentage of .925 both are near the top of the program record books. Levine has played in 68 career games and has a record of 28-20-11 with 2,087 saves and five shutouts.
