John Banaszak is set to make his Division I head coaching debut as he will become only the second man ever to lead the Colonials in program history after the retirement of Joe Walton after two decades. This is Banaszak’s 12th season overall on the staff at Robert Morris. Meanwhile, Eastern Kentucky is one of the more storied programs at the NCAA FCS level as it has won two national titles and made 20 playoff appearances, the second-highest amount in history. RMU’s returnees are headlined by preseason All-American Antwan Eddie, a starting cornerback who earned the accolade for his performance as a punt returner. On the flip side, a total of 12 Colonials, including quarterback Luke Brumbaugh, are expected to make the first start Thursday. After opening at home, Robert Morris will hit the road for three consecutive weeks, beginning with a trip to North Dakota next Saturday, Sept. 6.

Quick Stat of the Evening - Robert Morris enters its 2014 season opener with an all-time record of 9-11 (.450) in season lidlifters, all of which have come in non-conference play. After opening the season on the road against nationally ranked opponents each of the past two years, including kicking off 2012 with eventual national champion North Dakota State, RMU will begin a season at home for the ninth time in program history in 2014. Robert Morris has dropped each of its past five season openers, four of which have come on the road … Top performances by RMU in season openers: most points – 47 (9/4/04 vs. Buffalo State); fewest points allowed – 0 (9/7/96 @ Mercyhurst); most rushing yards – 215 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); most passing yards – 282 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); most total yards – 497 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); fewest yards allowed – 167 (9/4/04 vs. Buffalo State) Thursday's Opponent - Robert Morris and Eastern Kentucky will meet for just the second time on the football field Thursday, with the Colonels having claimed a 38-6 victory over the Colonials in the inaugural meeting between the two programs almost exactly one year ago at a muggy Roy Kidd Stadium (8/29). EKU scored on its first two possessions and never looked back in the win.

On This Date (Aug. 28) in Robert Morris Football History - Robert Morris will be navigating into uncharted waters as it will be playing on August 28 for the first time in program history when it takes field against Eastern Kentucky. Not only is it the first game on August 28, but it is actually the second game ever in the month of August for RMU, with the first being their opener with the Colonels last year. Playing in August isn’t the only unusual phenomenon associated with this year’s season opener for RMU. The contest against Eastern Kentucky will mark the second time Robert Morris has competed on a Thursday and only the third time the Colonials have not played on a Saturday. RMU’s prior game on a Thursday was also last year against EKU, but before that, one has to go back to 1995 when the Colonials played on a Friday night. On October 6 of that year, RMU nearly pulled off an improbable comeback as it scored 26 points in the final 16 minutes but fell to Gannon, 30-29. Both previous non-Saturday games in RMU history came on the road.

Head Coach John Banaszak First Season - Eastern Michigan ’75 John Banaszak became the second head football coach in Robert Morris University history in December 2013.

He served as an assistant coach and assistant head coach for the Colonials for 11 consecutive years prior to taking over the top spot. Banaszak was selected as Coach-In-Waiting in January 2012, allowing for a simple transition following the 2013 campaign.

At the end of the 2013 season, he was named as the Assistant Coach of the Year at the FCS level as selected by the American Football Coaches Association. He was one of five coaches selected for dedication to their teams and communities. He was the first RMU coach, as well as the first from the NEC, to claim this honor.

The 2013 season was Banaszak's sixth as assistant head coach for Robert Morris. Among his numerous duties with the program, he was responsible for tutoring the defensive line and the special teams unit.

Under Banaszak's guidance in 2013, Robert Morris led the NEC in net punting, punt return defense and punt return average. Banaszak was also a key component in instructing a RMU defense that finished second in the NEC in total defense within league play in 2013. Robert Morris finished its regular season ranked among the top 25 nationally in at least seven defensive categories including total defense.

With Banaszak's assistance, RMU has led the NEC in total defense four times in the past 10 years and ranked among the top four nine times in the past 11 seasons.

Banaszak was a key component to a 2010 defense that led the NEC in total defense as the Colonials claimed the NEC's inaugural berth in the FCS Playoffs. In 2006, he helped tutor an RMU defense that led I-AA in total defense, allowing an average of just 228.36 yards per game.

10 of the 13 players in school history to earn All-NEC recognition on the defensive line have come under the tutelage of Banaszak, including Nolan Nearhoof (200912), who was named the 2012 NEC Defensive Player of the Year after breaking both the school and league records for career sacks. Nearhoof would go on to earn AllAmerica honors, becoming the third Colonial defensive lineman to claim an AllAmerica nod under Banaszak in a seven-year span.

As much as Banaszak's presence has been felt on the defensive side of the ball, the same can be said on special teams. He has helped five distinct Colonials win an award at return specialist within the past decade.

A graduate of Eastern Michigan, Banaszak signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1975 season and was one of only three rookies to make the defending Super Bowl champion team out of training camp.

Primarily a special teams player on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl X championship team, Banaszak started five games the following season and then started at both right end and inside tackle in 1977 before suffering a knee injury that forced him to the injured reserve list.

Between 1978 and 1980, Banaszak started 45 regular-season games at defensive end as the Steelers won back-to-back Super Bowls. In Super Bowl XIII, Banaszak recorded six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and a fumble recovery in a 35-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys, which garnered him Defensive Player of the Game honors.

The following year, Banaszak helped the Steelers to a 31-19 victory over the Rams.

Last RMU Game vs. Eastern Kentucky Game #1 No. 19 Eastern Kentucky 38, Robert Morris 6 August 29, 2013 / Richmond, Ky. Roy Kidd Stadium (Attendance: 12,200) - No. 19 Eastern Kentucky came out on top of Robert Morris, 38-6, in non-conference action in each team’s 2013 opener.

True freshman Alex Caratelli had one of the highlights for the Colonials as the rookie caught a touchdown in his collegiate debut.

Redshirt senior Mike Cook tallied a game-high 10 tackles. It was his sixth career contest with double-figure stops. Senior Samuel Collins contributed a career-best eight tackles, including a tackle for loss.

After RMU was forced to punt on its first possession, EKU would open the scoring with a 56-yard drive, which was keyed in large part by a trick, third-down play in which the Colonels passed the ball to their primary quarterback. Another Colonial punt and a penalty gave the Colonels golden field position, and they promptly took advantage, scoring on a one-yard rush to double their lead.

EKU looked to add to its lead early in the second quarter, but the RMU defense came up with a big fourth-down stop to turn the ball over on downs as A.J. Holderman and Adrian Perez combined on a sack.

Robert Morris moved into the EKU red zone on its next possession, but the drive would stall, and RMU’s subsequent field goal was blocked. Eastern Kentucky used the specials teams stop to regain momentum and drove 76 yards to find paydirt once again.

Robert Morris would respond by driving 75 yards on 12 plays to get back into the game. Facing a fourth down at the EKU 36-yard line, Paul Jones found wide receiver Donte Jeter for a 16-yard gain and a conversion. Two plays later, RMU would face a third-and-10, prompting the Colonials to bring Caratelli onto the field for the first time.

On his first snap of collegiate action, Caratelli caught a pass in stride cutting across the middle and would break into the end zone before anyone could take him down, recording not only his first reception but also his first touchdown on the play. The play also marked Jones’ first TD pass in a Colonial uniform.

The Colonels would get the ball back with under two minutes left but were not content to run out the clock. Eastern Kentucky kept the pressure on and drove into the red zone. On third down, EKU would break into the end zone with a rush with just two seconds to play, scoring a backbreaking touchdown and setting the halftime score at 28-6.

RMU forced the Colonels into three-and-outs on each of their first two possessions of the second half but could not take advantage as it was unable to turn the stops into points on the other end.

The hosts put the game away by scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter.

He returned punts for the first time in his career in 2013 and tallied a singleseason school record 405 yards on 27 returns. He ranked third in the FCS, averaging 15 yards per return, and broke a school record with an 88-yard return for a TD at VMI. Eddie was honored three times in the league’s weekly special teams category and registered a return of 10+ yards in eight of the nine games in which he attempted a return.

First Impressions - While quarterback Luke Brumbaugh will be making his collegiate debut as a starter to open 2014, he is far from alone as he is part of a large group of Colonials who will be seeing their first significant collegiate action. There are 12 Colonials slated to make their first-career start Thursday, six on offense and six on defense. Eight of those 12 have never competed in a collegiate game before, a group that includes five redshirt freshmen, two true freshmen and one redshirt sophomore.

On Target - Duane Mitchell had a breakout campaign as a junior in 2013 as he reset the single-season school record with 52 receptions and notched 867 receiving yards, the second-highest figure in RMU history. What makes those stats even more impressive is that RMU faced four of the top 30 passing defenses in the nation a year ago. Mitchell posted a three-touchdown game in November, one week after hauling in a game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter in a win at Wagner. Mitchell enters 2014 sixth in career receiving yards (1,304) at Robert Morris and seventh in career receptions (79).

D-Fense - Robert Morris finished the 2013 campaign yielding 337.2 yards per game, a mark that ranked 20th nationally at the FCS level. It marked the third time in the past five years that the Colonials were among the top 25 in total defense. RMU also ranked among the top 25 last year in third-down defense, passing defense, red zone defense, passing efficiency defense and turnovers gained.

Home Sweet Home - Robert Morris is set to open its season at home for the first time since 2011. The Colonials are 14-6 (.700) all-time in home openers and 6-2 (.750) in games where their home opener is also their season opener. RMU has played 12 different programs in its home opener entering 2014, and it has defeated 10 of these foes at least once in a home opener. RMU won its home opener last year, 31-14.

Punt It - Tony LaMancusa returns as RMU's punter after earning All-NEC honors in 2013. He led the league in punting a year ago and helped RMU top the conference in net punting and punt return defense. The veteran tallied 19 punts downed inside the 20-yard line while only four went for touchbacks. In three of RMU’s past five games, LaMancusa tallied at least three punts downed inside the 20.

Enjoy the Sunset - With Robert Morris set to host Eastern Kentucky to open 2014, RMU is poised to play its season opener at night for the third consecutive season after never having played a season opener at night before 2012. Competing after daylight won’t stop with the opener for the Colonials as they play each of their first three games at night. 2014 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Eastern Kentucky (8/28/14) - Page 7 A New Look Offense - While John Banaszak will be only the second head coach in RMU football history, Darrin Hicks will be only the second offensive coordinator for the Colonials as former head coach Joe Walton performed the duty for the past 20 years.

Hicks was hired in December and brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience to RMU, including 10 as an offensive coordinator. Hicks’ numerous accomplishments include helping Delta State win games in the Division II Tournament in back-to-back years, including reaching the quarterfinals in 2008. Hicks, an all-conference offensive lineman who helped Washington & Jefferson reach the national championship game as a player, espouses an up-tempo attack.

Making the Grade - Recently graduated linebacker Kyle Cooper and current senior offensive lineman Nick Faraci were both named Capital One Academic All-District First Team in an announcement made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last November. As a result of their first-team selections, both Colonials advanced to the Academic All-America ballot. While this was the first such honor for both Cooper and Faraci, the RMU football program is no stranger to academic successes. These two accolades gave the Colonial program at least one Academic All-District honoree in each of the past 11 seasons, a span in which Robert Morris has taken home 21 overall selections. To put that in perspective, no other NEC school has an active streak of football academic all-district selections longer than two years. Cooper, a sport management major who also earned his Master of Business Administration, had a 3.71 GPA. He had 81 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and forced two turnovers in 2013.

Faraci, a nursing major, has a sterling 3.92 GPA. He has started 22 consecutive games at center, the most consecutive starts by any active Colonial on offense or defense.

In a NFL Training Camp - RMU assistant coach Myles Russ had a unique opportunity to help the Buffalo Bills' staff and running backs during the National Football League team's training camp in late July. Russ, the running backs coach for the Colonials, was one of three individuals recently selected by the Bills to participate in this year's Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship program. The Bills ranked second in the NFL in rushing yardage per game (144.2) last season with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson leading the way. The Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship is designed to expose talented minority college coaches to the methods and philosophies of summer NFL training camps. In fact, the Bills' current running back coach, Tyrone Wheatley, previously took part in the program in 2008. Russ is entering his third season as the running backs coach at RMU and remains the program’s all-time leading rusher (4,271).

In a NFL Training Camp, Part II - A.J. Dalton, a senior on last year’s RMU team, signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions in May and participated in the team’s training camp, including playing in preseason games. Dalton made 37 starts in his four years for the Colonials on the offensive line, beginning his career at guard before shifting to left tackle for the majority of his tenure. Dalton was selected as an All-American by The Sports Network in 2013, becoming just the second Colonial offensive lineman in school history to earn such an honor.

Comeback Kids - In its 17-13 win at Wagner last Oct. 26, RMU rallied from a fourthquarter deficit to claim a victory. That shouldn’t have come as a surprise as RMU seems to relish winning the hard way in the last one and a half years. The win against the Seahawks is one of five times in the team’s past 16 contests that the Colonials have been trailing in the fourth quarter but rebounded to pull out a victory. RMU has won at least two games when trailing in the fourth quarter in three of the past four seasons.

Reversing a Trend - After having some defensive struggles on third down in the beginning of the 2013 season, RMU picked it up in this area in the final five games a year ago.

The Colonials allowed opponents to convert on under 21 percent (16-of-77) of their third-down tries in their final quintet of games. As a result, RMU has outperformed its opponent in third down conversion percentage in each of its past four games. The Colonials added an exclamation point in the season finale as they held Saint Francis without a conversion in 11 attempts, marking the first time in over seven years that RMU held an opponent to zero third-down conversions. RMU’s strong finish in this area helped it rank among the top 25 nationally for 2013 at the FCS level (.349).

Team

Scott Farison (defensive coordinator; Mercyhurst '01): Farison enters his 13th season as an assistant coach at Robert Morris and is currently the longest-tenured active member of the staff. He spent the past 10 seasons as the recruiting coordinator and is entering his eighth season as defensive coordinator. The Colonials have consistently produced quality defenses under Farison’s watch. In Farison’s 11 seasons coaching the defensive side of the ball at RMU, the Colonials have finished among the top 25 nationally in total defense on six occasions, including finishing among the top 11 in four of those years.

Farison has been directly responsible for helping four different Colonials to NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors within the past decade, including two within the past four years.

Darrin Hicks (offensive coordinator; Washington & Jefferson ’96): Hicks is in his first season on staff at Robert Morris and directly coaches quarterbacks as part of his duties. For more on Coach Hicks, please see the top of page 7.

Andrew Richardson (offensive line; Penn State ’05): Richardson is entering his eighth season as an assistant for Robert Morris and has also served as assistant recruiting coordinator. In Richardson’s seven seasons on staff, Colonial offensive linemen have claimed seven All-NEC honors, with two of those honorees earning AllAmerica awards within the past four seasons.

Bill Hurley (secondary; Syracuse ’80): Hurley is entering his sixth season on staff at RMU. Hurley has seen his defensive backs take home seven All-NEC honors, four by corners and three by safeties, in his five years in addition to a major postseason award. Drafted as a safety in the fourth round of the 1980 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Hurley played two seasons in the NFL with New Orleans and Buffalo.

Patrick Shepard (receivers; Miami University ’09): Shepard enters his sixth season with Robert Morris but his first with receivers after he coached tight ends the past five seasons. Shepard, who is also the program's video coordinator, saw his tight ends earn all-league honors in four of the past five years.

Paul Mulbah (assistant secondary; Duquesne ’08): Mulbah begins his third season working with Robert Morris. In the 2013 season, with Mulbah’s assistance, Robert Morris led the league in passing defense efficiency within league play as the secondary held opponents to a meager 87.3 passing rating.

Myles Russ (running backs; Robert Morris ’11): Russ is entering his third season on staff with Robert Morris. He was named the 2010 Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Year after averaging 5.8 yards per carry.

Alex DiMichele (inside linebackers; Robert Morris ’11): DiMichele is entering his third season as an assistant with RMU. After working with defensive linemen for the past two years, he will work with linebackers this year. One of the top players in school history, he was the lynchpin to the defense that led RMU to the 2010 NEC title.

Cornelius Coleman (defensive line; Waynesburg ’99): Coleman enters his first season on the football staff at Robert Morris. Coleman most recently served as the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at Averett University, where he was a member of the Cougars' staff for seven seasons.

Nick McVay (H-backs and tight ends; Otterbein ’13): McVay begins his first season on staff with RMU. He was an intern with the program last year and assisted the defensive coaching staff.

Walton, the former NFL tight end and head coach of the New York Jets, started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistants to purchasing equipment. He was named NEC Coach of the Year four times in 18 seasons and guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns during his time on the sidelines. Walton, currently a special assistant to the athletic director at Robert Morris, was inducted in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame last November.

Robert Morris Captains Head coach John Banaszak has elected to continue with the basic setup that Robert Morris used in regard to its captains a year ago. RMU has chosen two captains—one offensive and one defensive—for the duration of the season. A third captain will be chosen each game week on a rotating basis. The third captain could come from any area of the team.

OFFENSE Redshirt senior Jon Hill was selected as the team’s captain on the offensive end. Hill is the most experienced offensive lineman on the roster, having played in 25 career games. He started every game at right tackle in 2013 and also started at right guard during the 2012 campaign. Hill actually entered Robert Morris as a defensive lineman coming out of high school, but he was transitioned to the offensive side of the ball before his sophomore season.

DEFENSE Senior Antwan Eddie was named as the team’s captain on the defensive end. Eddie is a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter at cornerback for the Colonials. He claimed all-conference honors at both defensive back and return specialist last season after breaking the singleseason school record for punt return yards. He owns 79 tackles, five interceptions and 405 punt return yards in his career. He earned Third Team All-America honors from The Sports Network at punt returner a year ago.

Robert Morris On The Airwaves Colonial football games are heard live on ESPN Radio AM-970 Pittsburgh, the flagship station of Robert Morris University athletics. ESPN 970 and RMU reached a threeyear agreement in the summer of 2013 to broadcast football, men’s basketball and men’s hockey games. The Voice of the Colonials, Chris Shovlin, and color analyst Brian Cleary call the football action. RMU Assistant Sports Information Director Spencer Kowitz joins Shovlin as color analyst for select Colonial road games. A pregame show is on 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Games can also be heard on the station’s website, www.970espn.com, as well as on iHeartRadio.

RMU home and league games can be seen live for free on NEC Front Row, the conference’s online digital network. The league has added multiple upgrades this year, including the ability to transmit live events in HD as well as providing the ability for the viewer to use a DVR-style, in-game real-time rewind feature.

Northeast Conference Offensive, Defensive or Rookie of the Year selections by Colonials

Colonials in the NFL Since Robert Morris played its first season in 1994, three former Colonials have appeared in a game in the National Football League (NFL), the most among current NEC members in this span as of August 2014. Many players have “rewritten” record books at various schools. At Robert Morris, however, Tim Hall wrote the record book. Hall rushed for 2,908 yards on 393 carries in his two seasons in a Colonial uniform and was named an All-American by the Associated Press in 1995. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round (183rd player overall) in the 1996 NFL Draft. In 1997, he led the Raiders in yards per carry average with 5.2 and was second in rushing yards to Napolean Kaufman. On Sept. 30, 1998, Hall was shot and killed in Kansas City at age 24. Hank Fraley, who played on the offensive line for Robert Morris from 1996-1999, carved out a niche for himself in the NFL for over a decade. Fraley was a three-time Mid-Major All-American during his years at RMU before he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a free-agent contract in April 2000.

Fraley was later claimed by the Eagles and started at center for Philadelphia for the entire 2001 season, helping the team to the 2002 NFC Championship game. For four straight seasons with Fraley starting at center from 2002-05, the Eagles appeared in the NFC Championship game. In 2005, Fraley became the first RMU alum to appear in the Super Bowl when he started at center against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Former RMU defensive back Robb Butler played for the San Diego Chargers during the 2004 season and was featured in special teams situations, including returning kickoffs.
