- The second-annual Three Rivers Classic returns to CONSOL Energy Center on Friday, December 27 and Saturday, December 28 when Boston College, Bowling Green, Penn State, and Robert Morris participate in the two-day tournament.

- Last year, Robert Morris captured the first Confluence Cup with a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Miami; the Colonials defeated Penn State, 6-0, in the semifinals.

- Sophomore goalie Matthew Skoff has started nine games for Penn State this season, earning a 3-5-1 record to go along with a 3.27 goals-against average and a save percentage of .900.

- Boston College is perched atop Hockey East with a conference record of 6-1-1 and an overall record of 10-4-2.

- Junior forward Johnny Gaudreau leads the team with 13 goals and 28 points while senior forward Bill Arnold has dished out a team-best 16 assists.

- Junior netminder Brian Billett has earned the start in ten games this season with a 6-31 record along with a 2.58 goals-against average and a save percentage of .917.

- Robert Morris currently sports a record of 2-10-2 and a 2-5-2 record in the Atlantic Hockey Association with wins against Canisius and Holy Cross.

- A trio of forwards have a team-high eight goals, including senior Bryce Williamson who leads the squad with 17 points while sophomore defenseman Ralfs Freibergs has a team-best 13 assists.

- Between the pipes, sophomore Tommy Burke has started 11 games to earn a 6-1-4 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage.

When the puck drops on the Three Rivers Classic, there will be one familiar face in the form of semifinal foe and in-state rival Penn State. The Colonials’ opponent in the second day of competition will be a new one as RMU has never faced either Boston College or Bowling Green.

Junior forward Cody Wydo is the only current Colonial to record multiple goals against Penn State. Wydo has six goals in just three games against the Nittany Lions, including a four-goal performance earlier this season.

in it for the long haul

Returning from the holiday break, Robert Morris will kick off ten consecutive weeks of competition with the Three Rivers Classic starting this weekend. Over the ten weeks, the Colonials will play 20 games, nine of which will be on the road with the remaining 11 contests at home.

lynch leading the way

Sophomore forward Zac Lynch currently has the hot hand for Robert Morris, scoring in the four most-recent games for the Colonials. During the streak, Lynch has also recorded three assists to give him seven points in those four games. Lynch also has a team-high six multi-point games this season.

making the grade

With the fall semester concluded, all 26 student-athletes on the roster earned at least a 3.00 grade-point average, including three players with a perfect 4.00 GPA. The team’s cumulative 3.68 GPA was the highest of any semester in the ten-year history of the program.

everybody making a point

Every RMU skater that has dressed for a game this season has recorded a point. Freshman goaltender Brandon Lane also joins the list after earning an assist on Nov. 16 in his first-career start at Air Force.

blazek skates in no. 100

Redshirt senior defenseman Andrew Blazek skated in his 100th career game on Dec. 7 when the Colonials were at Bentley. Having played in 101 games, Blazek has registered 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points.

conference contributers

A trio of Colonials - Andrew Blazek, Jeff Jones, and Evan Moore - have produced all of their points in conference action. Blazek has produced all four of his assists in AHA play while Jones has one goal and four assists and Moore has contributed two goals and an assist.

third period scoring

Robert Morris has scored a third-period goal in the four previous games. This season, the Colonials have netted a goal in the final frame in all but three of the team’s 14 games this season.

Two Colonials, Chase Golightly and Mac Roy, have produced all of their points on the power play this season. Golightly has contribted two goals and an assist while Roy has his only point and assist on the man advantage. Sophomore forward Matt Cope has scored both of his goals this season while the Colonials were skating with an extra man.

Senior forward Mac Roy recently played in his 100th collegiate game when he took the ice with Robert Morris on Nov. 22 against Holy Cross. A two-year transfer from Alabama-Huntsville, Roy has played in 42 games at RMU, recording three goals and five assists for eight points. In his career, Roy has 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points.

winning with special teams

In victories this season, Robert Morris’ power play has clicked at 25.0 percent (3/12) while its penalty kill has allowed just one goal while successfully killing 83.3 (5/6) percent of the penalties committed. In losses, the Colonials’ power play has been at 16.3 percent (8/49) and their penalty kill opperating at 64.5 percent (31/48).

With the committment of Tim Moore prior to the 2013-14 season, sophomore defenseman Evan Moore will spend his final two seasons at Robert Morris playing with his brother. The Moores will become the third brother tandem to skate together as Colonials, joining Colin and Furman South as well as Dave and Rob Cowan.

Sophomore goaltender Terry Shafer has seen the majority of the action in net for Robert Morris this season. Entering the season with less than 200 minutes of NCAA experience, Shafer has posted a 2-8-2 record with a 3.69 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage in 12 games this year.

classy scoring

RMU’s sophomore class, comprised of nine skaters, has produced the most offense this season. The class has contributed 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points while Zac Lynch has led the group in each of those three categories.

firing squad

RMU has averaged 34.86 shots on goal per game this season. The number ranks the Colonials first in the AHA and sixth nationally. Zac Lynch leads the team with 55 shots on goal, the fourth most by an individual in Atlantic Hockey.

home cooking

At the 84 Lumber Arena, the Colonials have scored 24 goals compared to the 16 goals that the team has recorded on the road. RMU sports a 2.82 goals-against average on home ice while that number inflates to a goals-against average of 4.38 on the road.

the powerless penalty kill

RMU has successfully killed off 41 of the 62 penalties they have taken this season. The 66.1 percent success rate ranks 58th of the 59 NCAA programs, just ahead of Alabama-Huntsville.

In the 14 games this season, RMU goaltenders have combined for a 3.60 goals-against average and a save percentage of .894. In AHA play, the Colonial netminders have stepped their game up by lowering their goals-against average to 3.38 and raising their save percentage to .897.

RMU’s two wins this season have come after the Colonials were leading after two periods. Since joining the AHA, Robert Morris has lost just two of the 51 games in which it has held an advantage heading into the third period of play. One of the two losses came last season against RIT.

gibson gets multiple 36 27 22 18

Sophomore Greg Gibson earned the first multi-point game of his career with a goal and an assist in the victory over Canisius on November 8th. Gibson became the 14th active Colonial to record a multi-point effort and the seventh to do so this season.

teaming up with jacklin and wydo

Scott Jacklin and Cody Wydo make two-thirds of a line, but it does not matter who joins them to finalize the trio. When Jacklin and Wydo have been paired together on a line, the lines have combined for 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in ten games.

Prior to the beginning of the season, head coach Derek Schooley announced that the Assistant Captain honors would be awarded on a monthly basis. For the month of October, senior defenseman Evan Renwick held the honor before is was passed along to the current assistant, junior forward David Rigatti for the month of November. Rigatti kept the honor for the month of December as junior forward Cody Wydo joined him in wearing the ‘A’.

Senior defenseman Jimmy Geerin has stepped away from the game due to recurring back problems. the Alaska native plans to remain around the Colonial program for the remainder of the 2013-14 season.

professional firsts

Recently, two members of the 2013 graduating class picked up their first professional goals this season. In the ECHL, defenseman Tyler Hinds notched his first goal with the Utah Grizzlies. In the AHL, forward Adam Brace netted his first AHL goal with the Charlotte Checkers.

friedmann faces off

Sophomore David Friedmann has been the go-to guy in the faceoff circle this year.

Friedmann currently ranks in the top-75 in the NCAA with a .558 faceoff winning percentage that also ranks him 14th in Atlantic Hockey.

wydo claims player of the week

After a four-goal performance against Penn State, Cody Wydo was tabbed the AHA Player of the Week on November 5th. It was the first such honor for a Colonial this season.

the grand finale

Robert Morris’ goaltending in the third period has been strong to say the least. The trio has allowed just 12 goals in the final frame while combining to make 140 saves for a goals-against average of 2.57 and a .921 save percentage.

getting production from the defense

Robert Morris defensemen have contributed just four of the Colonials’ 40 goals this season. Sophomores Chase Golightly and Evan Moore have each found the back of the net twice this season.

surviving the second period

The second period has been a period of nightmares for Robert Morris this season. RMU goaltenders have recorded a 5.57 goals-against average and an .855 save percentage. The Colonials have been outscored, 26-10, in the period despite the goaltenders making 153 saves, the highest total of any period.

a frightening october

For the first time in the program’s ten-year history, Robert Morris has gone winless through the month of October. The Colonials’ record of 0-5-1 before their first victory represented the team’s longest winless streak to begin a season over the first ten seasons.

the defensive corps

With three underclassmen goaltenders, the defense of Robert Morris will be counted on to stand tall and take pressure off of the trio. Senior defenseman Andrew Blazek has done just that as he currently leads the team with 36 blocked shots. Blazek’s total is the third highest in the AHA and ranks 21st in the nation.

these days in history one year ago december 28, 2012 robert morris 6 penn state 0 Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team opened action in the inaugural Three Rivers Classic as the Colonials took on Penn State for the second-consecutive game. RMU would advance to the championship game after a 6-0 victory over the Nittany Lions in front of a crowd of 11,663 at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Less than two minutes in to the game, junior defenseman Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners) would pick up his fourth goal in eight games this season.

After back-and-forth action for the majority of the period, the Colonials would double their lead as senior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) with his sixth goal of the season at the 16:33 mark of the period.

Just 28 seconds later, Robert Morris would expand their advantage to three goals as sophomore Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) corralled a loose puck and picked up his fifth goal of the year.

With 38 seconds remaining in the period, Wydo would pick up his second goal of the contest after crashing the net for to collect a rebound.

In the opening minutes of the third period, freshman forward Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo. / Wenatchee Wild) would net his first career goal while the Colonials were on the resulting five-minute power play.

The Colonials would pick up a sixth goal as assistant captain Tyler Hinds (Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders) would score his second goal of the season at the 15:52 mark of the period.

Senior goaltender Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) would record 48 saves for his third career shutout and second this season. The victory improves Levine to 5-0-2 in his last seven starts while the Colonials are currently on a six-game unbeaten streak.

musket shots “jacklin” up the assists

Scott Jacklin is one of just 14 Colonials in the ten-year history of the program to record three or more assists in a single game. Jacklin accomplished this feat for the second time in his career against Niagara on October 19 when he picked up three assists. In doing so, Jacklin became just the tenth Colonials to have multiple games with three or more assists. The first time that Jacklin accomplished this feat was last season against Bentley when he tied a program single-game record with four assists in a game.

57 wins and counting

This season’s senior class needs just nine wins to set a new program record for victories by a class. The graduating class of 2012 holds the current record with 65 victories. This season’s group of seniors currently has 57 wins, a number which is the second-most by any graduating class.

short-handed markers

When the Colonials find the back of the net while shorthanded, it usually leads to a win. Robert Morris has won 22 of the 37 games in which they have scored a shorthanded goal, but that hasn’t been the case in any of the four games this season in which RMU has scored short handed. This year, the Colonials are 0-3-1 in those games despite short-handed goals in consecutive games.

In the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish seventh in the conference. The Colonials were behind each of their opponents from the western pod; Niagara, Mercyhurst, Air Force, Canisius, and RIT. RMU was also selected behind eastern pod favorite Connecticut, the team that knocked the Colonials out of the AHA Quarterfinals last season. In the inaugural AHA Meadi Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish in a tie for seventh with Holy Cross.

The Colonials returned just four skaters that had previously recorded a multi-goal game. Cody Wydo has the most multi-goal games of the returners with seven. Colin South has recorded five multi-goal games while Andrew Blazek and Scott Jacklin each have one multi-goal game in their career.

the tenth season

The 2013-14 season marks the 10th season for the Colonial hockey program. It is the team’s fourth season in the Atlantic Hockey Association. Robert Morris has an all-time record of 124-156-40 in its time as a Division I program. Head coach Derek Schooley has been behind the bench for every season at RMU.

100-game plateau

Just one Colonial entered the 2013-14 season with at least 100 games played. Senior captain Colin South has skated in 102 games during his first three seasons at Robert Morris. As many as five other Colonials could join South at the 100-game milestone by the season’s end.

movin’ on up

Prior to the 2013-14 season, head coach Derek Schooley elevated his two assistants, Matt Nicholson and Mark Workman, to the status of associate head coach. Workman served as a top assistant at Brown for six seasons before coming to Robert Morris while Nicholson joined the Colonials after time at Adrian College. Both coaches are entering their fifth seasons as members of the Colonial hockey family.

The Colonial hockey team features five players from Pennsylvania. Four of the five players - Andrew Blazek, Zac Lynch, David Rigatti, and Colin South - are from the Greater Pittsburgh Area while John Walton is from the eastern side of the state and the West Chester area.

Three Colonials from the 2012-13 team were named Student-Athletes of the Year by the AHA. Two of them, Brandon Denham and Zac Lynch, are still with the squad for this season. In order to receive the award, the student-athlete must maintain at least a 4.0 GPA during the season.

970 am espn

Robert Morris University and 970 AM ESPN (WBGG) Pittsburgh have reached a threeyear agreement to broadcast men’s ice hockey home games beginning this fall and running through the 2015-16 athletic season. Games can be heard on 970 ESPN and on the station’s website, www.970espn.com, as well as on iHeartRadio where Tim Benz and Mike Prisuta will call the action. Pittsburgh Clear Channel, which owns 970 AM ESPN, currently carries the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers (WDVE-FM 102.5) and the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins (WXDX-FM 105.9 FM).

Of the three goaltenders on the Robert Morris roster this season, a pair of them are from the Empire State. Dalton Izyk and Terry Shafer are both New York natives and will battle each other for playing time between the pipes for RMU this season.

the newest captain

Heading into the program’s tenth season, head coach Derek Schooley turned to senior forward Colin South as the team’s newest captain. South served as an assistant captain during his junior season.

colonials in the pros

As training camps through all levels of hockey kicked off in late September, two members of the Colonial hockey family received invitations to the main NHL camps. Eric Levine got the call to join the Nashville Predators camp while Denny Urban headed to join the Florida Panthers. Urban became just the second Colonial in program history to see playing time while in camp when he dressed for the Panthers in an exhibition against Nashville.

turning youth into experience

The Colonials featured ten freshmen during the 2012-13 season. This year, RMU looks to transition that youth into experience that can guide the program after a 20-win season. With the departure of five seniors from last season, the Colonials boast a rather experience squad in front of three underclassmen netminders.

The 2012-13 edition of Robert Morris men’s ice hockey will be remembered as one of the greatest in school history as the team set a new school record with 20 victories.

The team finished with a 20-14-4 overall record while going 13-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey play. The Colonials would have two different seven-game unbeaten streaks while also claiming the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

The Colonials return seven of their top-ten point producer from the 2012-13 season.

The group is led by junior Cody Wydo, who recorded 33 points in 38 games last season.

Wydo also led the team with 21 goals during the 2012-13 campaign.

When the Colonials needed a clutch goal, Robert Morris turned to junior forward Cody Wydo. Wydo supplied a quarter of the Colonials’ game-winning goals this season. Of his 21 goals, five were of the game-winning variety.

Last season, Robert Morris set a new program record for wins in a season with 20. The new mark included victories over NCAA Frozen Four finalist Quinnipiac, fifth-ranked Miami to capture the Three Rivers Classic, and an overtime victory over nationally-ranked Niagara.

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator.

He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

head coach derek schooley Head coach Derek Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 41 players who have signed pro contracts, four players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participated in NHL developmental camps and tournaments. Now in his tenth year, Schooley enters the 201314 season with a record of 124-156-40 in his first nine seasons at Robert Morris.

Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some major upsets in the past few seasons. In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four-time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. However Schooley’s signature wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against No. 1 ranked Miami. Just three seasons later, Schooley’s Colonials would again knock of a nationally ranked Miami squad; this time it was to capture the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

During the 2012-13 season, the Colonials would knock off three nationally-ranked teams en route to a 20-win campaign. Two seven-game unbeaten streaks allowed Schooley to guide his squad to a fifth-place regular season finish. After winning the Three Rivers Classic, Schooley and his team earned their second national ranking in program history as the Colonials broke in to the polls as the No. 19 team in the country heading in to January and a nationally televised game against Army. Schooley coached senior Adam Brace to a spot on the All-Atlantic Hockey Second Team while the Colonials were tops in the NCAA in short-handed goals scored.

RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey during the 2011-12 season while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com. Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all-conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up. During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA Student-Athlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 200607 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime. In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA included a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals. Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott). In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials placed two players, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an Assistant Coach for four years before spending one season as an Associate Head Coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22.

Penn State (2-3-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) would take the game’s first penalty five minutes into the opening frame. The penalty would allow RMU’s power play to take the ice and 22 seconds later the Colonials would pick up the game’s first goal. Wydo would pounce on a loose puck in the crease and flick a backhanded shot over a diving Matthew Skoff to make the score 1-0. An initial shot from Tyson Wilson (Brockville, Ontario / Brockville Braves) from the blue line was stopped by Skoff who also stoned a pair of rebound attempts from Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) before the puck squirted to Wydo at the right post.

Robert Morris’ advantage would last through the remainder of the first period and two minutes into the second period before Penn State got on the board and tied the game. Prior to Friday’s contest, RMU had allowed ten goals in the second period while only finding the back of the net twice. That trend would continue as Penn State picked up three goals in a span of eight minutes while the Colonials netted one goal.

Streaking down the right-wing boards from the defensive zone, Eric Scheid would beat RMU goaltender Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) with a wrist shot from the right-wing faceoff dot. Scheid entered the zone on a two-on-one and looked off the RMU defender who was in the slot protecting against the pass before taking the shot that would tie the game, 1-1.

Six minutes later, the Nittany Lions would take the lead with a power-play goal from Luke Juha. After winning an offensive-zone faceoff with the man advantage, the puck made its way to the left point where Juha let go of a slapshot that whizzed by Shafer who was screened on the play.

Just over a minute after Penn State took the lead, the Nittany Lions would increase the deficit facing Robert Morris with a goal to make the score 3-1 midway through the second period. A turnover in the defensive zone by Robert Morris led to a goal by Tommy Olczyk. Olczyk was positioned in the slot and capitalized on a quick pass off of the turnover to beat a sprawled out Shafer.

With less than two minutes remaining in the second period, Wydo would pick up his second goal of the game.

Wydo started the sequence picking off a pass in the defensive zone and sprung Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) into the neutral zone along the right wing. While Jacklin was stood up at the offensive blue line, the puck continued into the offensive zone where it was picked up by Ben Robillard (Ottawa, Ontario / Ottawa Jr. Senators). Robillard eluded the backcheck of a Nittany Lion before dishing a saucer pass over a second defender that came diving back towards the crease. The pass landed right on the stick of Wydo who was able to direct it behind Skoff to make the score 3-2.

Down a goal heading into the third period, it would take Wydo and his band of Colonials a little more than three minutes to tie the contest. Coming in all alone on Skoff, Wydo was impeded and awarded a penalty shot. On the penalty shot, Wydo made his way towards Skoff and unleashed a wristshot from the slot that eluded the goaltender between his blocker and pad to tie the game, 3-3. Wydo became the first Colonial since Adam Brace during the 2011-2012 season to record a hat trick.

Just two minutes after battling back to tie the contest, RMU would allow consecutive power-play goals to Penn State. The first of the two goals came from Casey Bailey who pounced on a rebound conceded by Shafer to make the score 4-3. Shafer sprawled out to make numerous saves on the Nittany Lions while the Colonials were down a man before the puck bounced into the slot where Bailey was positioned for the go-ahead tally.

With less than two minutes remaining in the third, Penn State would pick up what turned out to be the gamewinning goal from Mike Williamson. On the man advantage, the Nittany Lions took just four seconds to make the score 5-3. Winning the initial faceoff after the RMU infraction, the loose puck bounced to Williamson in the slot who snapped a shot past Shafer.

With Shafer pulled for an extra attacker, Robert Morris pulled within a goal as 12 seconds remained on the clock when Wydo picked up his fourth goal of the game. Positioned at the left post, Wydo flicked home a deflected point shot with a defender on his back to make the final score 5-4. Jacklin and Lynch each picked up their second assists of the evening on the goal.

Robert Morris would finish the game with 52 shots on goal, the most since the Colonials go 58 shots on net against American International during the 2012 Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals. Shafer finished up the contest with 36 saves, one shy of his personal best.

Special teams played a huge factor in the contest as Robert Morris went one of six with the man advantage while Penn State capitalized on three of its seven power plays. The power-play goal in the first period for RMU marked the fifth-consecutive game that the Colonials have scored with the man-advantage. RMU has now allowed a powerplay goal against in four-consecutive games and multiple goals while on the penalty kill in three-straight contests.

With his four goals on the evening, Wydo moved into third all-time in goals scored with 41 career goals. Wydo entered the game with the fifth-most in RMU history and surpassed Ryan Cruthers and Brace with his performance against the Nittany Lions. Adding the four goals to his season output, Wydo now ranks third in the NCAA and first in Atlantic Hockey with seven goals in the season.

Lynch and Wydo both extended their point-streak to four games while Lynch’s two assists match a career best from last season against RIT. After allowing five goals for the second time in the last three games, Robert Morris suffered its first loss to the Penn State program.

ERIE, Pa. – December 14, 2013 - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team concluded its three-game road trip with an evening contest at Mercyhurst on Saturday. In a heavyweight bout, the two teams slugged it out and traded punches in a contest that ended in a 5-5 tie.

In the final stages of killing off a major penalty, Robert Morris (2-10-2, 2-6-2 AHA) took a 5-4 lead with a shorthanded goal by Greg Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Amarillo Bulls). Gibson stole the puck and streaked in all alone on Mercyhurst (9-7-2, 7-1-1 AHA) goaltender Jimmy Sarjeant and deked to the forehand to shuffle the puck behind the Mercyhurst netminder just four minutes into the third period.

Just over two minutes later, Mercyhurst responded with a goal from Matthew Zay that tied the score, 5-5, with 13 minutes remaining in the third.

Mercyhurst would net the first goal of the game seven minutes into the opening frame as Kyle Cook capitalized on a defensive zone turnover by the Colonials and ripped a shot past Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs), the starting netminder for RMU. Midway through the opening frame, Robert Morris would answer with a power-play goal. Sophomore Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) picked up his seventh goal of the season at the 9:56 mark of the first period as he beat the Laker starter, Jimmy Sarjeant, with a shot from the left wing circle.

The Lakers would regain the lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening frame as Kyle Dutra ripped a shot over Shafer’s blocker to make the score 2-1 in favor of Mercyhurst.

It would take the Colonials less than two minutes to respond and tie the game for the second time in the period. In the aftermath of a net-front scramble Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) found the loose puck and stabbed it through Sarjeant to tie the score, 2-2.

RMU would have a full two minutes of a two-man advantage in the final seconds of the first period that would carry over into the start of the second frame. The Colonials would capitalize 73 seconds into the second period when Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) banged home a cross-crease pass past Sarjeant to give Robert Morris a 3-2 lead.

The Colonials would double their lead seven minutes into the second frame when Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) deflected a point shot over Sarjeant’s glove as RMU took a 4-2 lead. The goal was Wydo’s team-leading 12th goal of the season.

On a two-man advantage of its own, Mercyhurst would make the score 4-3 with a goal from Nick Jones who ripped a slapshot past Shafer midway through the second period.

The Colonials would spend five minutes on the penalty kill in the final stages of the second period that carried over into the final frame. Less than a minute into the third period, Mercyhurst would tie the game, 4-4, with a goal by Zac Frischmon.

Shafer finished the game with 38 saves, making a minimum of ten stops in each period while improving his record to 2-8-2.

With a goal and an assist in the game for his sixth multi-point game this season, Lynch continues to lead the Colonials with 17 points. Lynch has now scored in four consecutive contests while earning seven points during the scoring streak.
