AGAINST THE LAKERS The opening series of the 2013-14 season for Robert Morris will mark also be the fourth series between the Colonials and Lake Superior State. Of the previous six meetings, RMU has won just once against the Lakers, a 4-3 victory on Nov. 22, 2008, the last time that RMU visited Lake Superior State.

The two teams last met in 2009 for a pair of games at Robert Morris that were both won by the Lakers; 7-6 and 2-0.

SCOUTING LAKE SUPERIOR STATE Lake Superior State ended the 2012-13 season with a first-round exit in the CCHA Playoffs after a 1721-1 record. Selected to finish eighth by the WCHA coaches, the Lakers dropped their only exhibition contest this past weekend against the USA National U-18 Team, 3-2. Senior Dan Radke recorded both goals for the Lakers in the exhibition contest Radke returns to Lake Superior State after recording 21 points, five goals and 16 assists. Kevin Murdock and Kevin Kapalka both return in net for the Lakers after splitting time last season. Murdock held the better save percentage (.930), goalsagainst average (2.51), and record (10-12, .455) over Kapalka last season.

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator.

He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

LID LIFTERS Robert Morris is 4-5 all-time in the first game of its season. The last time that the Colonials won the first game of the season was October 9, 2010 on the road against American International by a final score of 4-1.

RECEIVING VOTES In the preseason poll released by USCHO.com, Robert Morris received two votes. This comes after the Colonials cracked the USCHO.com poll last season at No. 19 after winning the Three Rivers Classic and shuting out then-No. 5 ranked Miami. Six institutions from the AHA were recognized in the poll, including rival Niagara who was ranked No. 20.

THE NEWEST CAPTAIN Heading into the program’s tenth season, head coach Derek Schooley turned to senior forward Colin South as the team’s newest captain. South served as an assistant captain during his junior season.

PRESEASON AHA POLLS In the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish seventh in the conference. The Colonials were behind each of their opponents from the western pod; Niagara, Mercyhurst, Air Force, Canisius, and RIT. RMU was also selected behind eastern pod favorite Connecticut, the team that knocked the Colonials out of the AHA Quarterfinals last season. In the inaugural AHA Meadi Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish in a tie for seventh with Holy Cross.

WORKMAN, NICHOLSON ELEVATED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Prior to the 2013-14 season, head coach Derek Schooley elevated his two assistants, Matt Nicholson and Mark Workman, to the status of associate head coach. Workman served as a top assistant at Brown for six seasons before coming to Robert Morris while Nicholson joined the Colonials after time at Adrian College. Both coaches are entering their fifth seasons as members of the Colonial hockey family.

55 WINS AND COUNTING This season’s senior class needs just 11 wins to set a new program record for victories by a class. The graduating class of 2012 holds the current record with 65 victories. This season’s group of seniors currently has 55 wins, a number which is the second-most by any graduating class.

100-GAME PLATEAU Just one Colonial enters the 2013-14 season with at least 100 games played. Senior captain Colin South has skated in 102 games during his first three seasons at Robert Morris. As many as five other Colonials could join South at the 100-game milestone by the season’s end.

TURNING YOUTH INTO EXPERIENCE The Colonials featured ten freshmen during the 2012-13 season. This year, RMU looks to transition that youth into experience that can guide the program after a 20-win season. With the departure of five seniors from last season, the Colonials boast a rather experience squad in front of three underclassmen netminders.

SCORING DRIVE The Colonials return seven of their top-ten point producer from the 2012-13 season. The group is led by junior Cody Wydo, who recorded 33 points in 38 games last season. Wydo also led the team with 21 goals during the 2012-13 campaign.

MUSKET SHOTS COLONIALS IN THE PROS As training camps through all levels of hockey kicked off in late September, two members of the Colonial hockey family received invitations to the main NHL camps. Eric Levine got the call to join the Nashville Predators camp while Denny Urban headed to join the Florida Panthers. Urban became just the second Colonial in program history to see playing time while in camp when he dressed for the Panthers in an exhibition against Nashville.

A BANNER SEASON The 2012-13 edition of Robert Morris men’s ice hockey will be remembered as one of the greatest in school history as the team set a new school record with 20 victories. The team finished with a 20-144 overall record while going 13-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey play. The Colonials would have two different seven-game unbeaten streaks while also claiming the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

CLUTCH CODY When the Colonials needed a clutch goal, Robert Morris turned to junior forward Cody Wydo. Wydo supplied a quarter of the Colonials’ game-winning goals this season. Of his 21 goals, five were of the game-winning variety.

PROGRAM RECORD Last season, Robert Morris set a new program record for wins in a season with 20. The new mark included victories over NCAA Frozen Four finalist Quinnipiac, fifth-ranked Miami to capture the Three Rivers Classic, and an overtime victory over nationally-ranked Niagara.

THE ONLY MAN BEHIND THE BENCHES Robert Morris is led by Derek Schooley, who has been the only bench boss for the Colonials in the program’s 10-year history. Schooley has a career record of 124-156-40.

BREAKING DOWN THE 2012-13 COLONIALS OFFENSE (13TH - 3.11 GOALS PER GAME) - Junior forward Cody Wydo returns to Robert Morris after leading the Colonials with 21 goals in 38 games last season. Wydo’s 0.55 goals per game pace ranked him 9th in the NCAA for the 2012-13 season. Of his 21 goals, Wydo would also contribute five game-winning goals, good enough for 8th in the NCAA rankings.

- Senior forward Colin South had 13 goals in 36 games while junior forward Scott Jacklin had 10 goals in 34 games. South would finish the season ranked just inside the top 100 in the NCAA in goals per game with 0.36.

DEFENSE (31ST - 2.76 GOALS ALLOWED PER GAME) - Senior defenseman Andrew Blazek leads a veteran returning defensive unit with 18 points in 32 games last season. His 0.56 points per game average ranked him in the top 50 in the NCAA. Blazek netted nine goals in the 2012-13 season, the most by any Colonial defenseman.

- Sophomore goaltender Terry Shafer is the only goalie on the Robert Morris roster to see playing time last season. Shafer appeared in four games with a record of 1-2-0 to go with a 3.08 goalsagainst average and a .888 save percentage. Despite just under 200 minutes of game experience, Shafer’s only win was a shutout on the road at Canisius.

POWER PLAY (48TH - 14.3 PERCENT [23/161]) - Robert Morris closed out the 2012-13 season scoring a power-play goal in each of its AHA Quarterfinal contests against Connecticut. The Colonials also closed out the regular season with powerplay goals in consecutive games against Mercyhurst.

- The Colonials return the top-five power-play goal producers from last season. Leading the group is senior forward Colin South led RMU with five power-play goals last season. One of those goals came against Niagara in overtime to defeat the nationally-ranked Purple Eagles.

PENALTY KILL (37TH - 81.4 PERCENT [144/177]) - After not allowing a power-play goal in six games, the Colonials allowed power-play goals in back-to-back games to Connecticut in the AHA quarterfinals.

- Junior forward Cody Wydo would score three short-handed goals, a number that ranked him 2nd in the NCAA as Robert Morris led the nation with nine short-handed goals last season.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – October 6, 2013 - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team kicked off its tenth season of existence with an exhibition win over the University of Toronto, 2-0. The three goaltenders on the RMU roster would collaborate for a 16-save shutout.

With the departure of the top goalie from last season, the Colonials will turn to one of Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs), Dalton Izyk (Oswego, N.Y. / Indiana Ice), or Brandon Lane (Oakville, Ontario / Kanata Stallions) to shoulder the load heading in to the upcoming season. Of the three goaltenders, Shafer is the only one to have seen playing time at the collegiate level. Now a sophomore, Shafer recorded a record of 1-2-0 with a 3.08 goals-against average and a save percentage of .888. Despite seeing less than 200 minutes of action between the pipes, Shafer’s lone victory was a shutout at Canisius as he stopped all 24 shots he faced.

Seeing just 20 minutes of action in RMU’s lone preseason contest of the season, Shafer would make four saves as neither team would find the back of the net in the opening stanza. The Colonials would get nine shots on goal in the period, each of which would be turned away by Toronto’s goaltender, Garrett Sheehan.

Each team would have one opportunity on the power play in the period while the Varsity Blues would have a second opportunity with the man advantage that would extend into the second period. Robert Morris would kill off the remaining time left on the penalty to start the second period as Izyk would take over in net.

Five minutes in to the period, an altercation occurred that saw matching minor penalties as well as a four-minute power-play for the Colonials. Just 31 seconds into the first minor penalty, Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) would deflect a shot from the point to put Robert Morris ahead, 1-0. Lynch positioned himself in the slot and got his stick on a shot by Chase Golightly (Temecula, Calif. / Prince George Spruce Kings) to redirect the puck past Sheehan. After winning the faceoff, RMU cycled the puck in the corners before getting it out to defenseman Tyson Wilson (Brockville, Ontario / Brockville Braves) who then slid a pass along the blue line to set up Golightly for a one-time attempt.

Lynch’s power-play marker would hold up as the game-winning goal and was the only goal of the period as the Colonials capitalized on one of their five power-play attempts in the period. Izyk would record five saves during his time in net while being credited with the win.

Things would get nasty once again as the second period came to an end and Robert Morris would have to spend the first two minutes of the third period on the penalty kill. Lane would enter the game for the third period and instantly faced a flurry of shots while the Colonials were on the penalty kill. Lane would finish the period stopping all seven shots he faced, including a stop stonewalling a Varsity Blues’ forward on a breakaway.

Just over five minutes into the final frame, Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo. / Wenatchee Wild) would double RMU’s advantage with a sneaky shot from the left-wing corner. After another cycle down low between Cope and his linemates Lynch and David Rigatti (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Texas Tornado), Cope spun around and flung the puck towards the net from the left corner of the offensive zone. The puck somehow found its way through Sheehan and over the line to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead with Rigatti and Lynch given assists on the tally.

Despite the physicality of the game, neither team would be whistled for an infraction in the third period as Robert Morris held possession in Toronto’s defensive zone for the majority of the period. As time wound down and Toronto called a timeout, the Colonials controlled the puck in the offensive zone so that the Varsity Blues were unable to pull Sheehan for an extra attacker before the final horn was blown.

With a defensive mindset, Robert Morris allowed just 16 shots on goal while also blocking another 16 shots.

Offensively, the Colonials recorded 37 shots on goal as Lynch paced the squad with five shots on the cage. Lynch finished the game with one goal and one assist after recording five goals and nine assists in 34 games as a freshman last season.

At the faceoff dot, David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canaidens) won eight of his nine draws while Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) took a team-high 12 draws and won six of them.

Head coach Derek Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 41 players who have signed pro contracts, four players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participated in NHL developmental camps and tournaments. Now in his tenth year, Schooley enters the 2013-14 season with a record of 124-156-40 in his first nine seasons at Robert Morris.

Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some major upsets in the past few seasons.

In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four-time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. However Schooley’s signature wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against No. 1 ranked Miami. Just three seasons later, Schooley’s Colonials would again knock of a nationally ranked Miami squad; this time it was to capture the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

During the 2012-13 season, the Colonials would knock off three nationally-ranked teams en route to a 20-win campaign. Two seven-game unbeaten streaks allowed Schooley to guide his squad to a fifth-place regular season finish. After winning the Three Rivers Classic, Schooley and his team earned their second national ranking in program history as the Colonials broke in to the polls as the No. 19 team in the country heading in to January and a nationally televised game against Army. Schooley coached senior Adam Brace to a spot on the All-Atlantic Hockey Second Team while the Colonials were tops in the NCAA in short-handed goals scored.

RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey during the 2011-12 season while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com.

Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all-conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase.

The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up. During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA StudentAthlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-07 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime. In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA included a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals.

Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott). In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials placed two players, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an Assistant Coach for four years before spending one season as an Associate Head Coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 199394 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22.
