This past summer, together with my son Sjors, I was visiting my sister and brother-inlaw in Arizona. My sister Jacqueline emigrated to the US about 40 years ago and even though she has turned all-American she still speaks perfectly fine Dutch, with the occasional English word in between. Her husband Jim is an American who she met in a restaurant in London at age 21, when she was on vacation over there. The restaurant of the hotel where she was staying was fully booked, so the waiter asked my future brother-in-law if he minded sharing his table with this young lady for breakfast. The sparks flew and a couple of years later they got married and moved to the US. This had quite an impact on my parents, though I did not notice that at the time, being 16 and occupied with all sorts of things, as adolescents are bound to be.

As a teenager I thought it was kind of cool that I had an older sister, nearly five years my senior, who lived on the other side of the ocean. Once you get older the family ties get tighter, especially once your parents have passed away. Jacqueline, better known as Jacky now, became a GP in the state of Minnesota and started her own practice.

She retired a couple of years ago and, together with her husband, has escaped the bitter cold of Minnesota (where winters are more than harsh) and settled in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona.

WARM WELCOME I 5

Due to the blessing of FaceTime, we regularly see and speak with each other. And she visits the Netherlands every year, usually around the time of my birthday in September, but I noticed earlier this year that I had not visited them in quite a long while. My long absence did not feel quite right, so I decided to drop by on short notice.

There was already an inspirational trip planned to New York, so that served as a nice stopover. I have tried to pass the retail bug on to my son Sjors for quite some time, by sharing some special articles with him to read or by telling him of my experiences. He studies Commercial Economics in Amsterdam and intends to become an entrepreneur himself. He has already been an intern at Rivièra Maison and hears many stories about the company at home.

As a father, I have kindled the Rivièra Maison spirit in him from an early age, but only time will tell if he has the right amount of talent and perseverance to follow in his father’s footsteps. It seemed like a good idea to ask Sjors along on this trip to New York to explore the Big Apple and then visit his uncle and aunt. His response was something along the lines of “sick man! ...”

One of the many perks of my job is that I can travel a lot to cities like London, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Istanbul and Delhi, places I visit at least once per year, and even though Hong Kong is very impressive, it is New York that seems the most inspirational city to me when it comes to retail experience and innovation. It seems as though money is no object over there and it often truly isn’t. The top brands all have fantastic stores at prime locations with such sky-high rents that it is impossible to even make a dollar of profit, but brand experience is the sole reason why they chose such locations. Profit is gained elsewhere.

Such a trip with your son is invaluable and I would recommend it to anyone, but it was not all just peaches and cream, since those days were also three long hard days of work. So that meant breakfast at 8 AM at the latest and then off hitting the streets, walking the long stretch of visiting store after store. Men in particular are known for not being very fond of this, but I thought it was very inspirational and Sjors has grown to love it too. Of course we visited the Flagship Stores of Ralph Lauren, my biggest idol, on Madison Avenue, but also his vintage store in Soho and his newest store on 5th Avenue.

But of course we also visited Victoria’s Secret on Broadway, what a show that was, and the silly Anthropology and Urban Outfitters formulas by the same owner with their charming second-hand look and feel, as if it was there by pure happenstance. Then back to Nike town and the Apple store for a nice contrast.

Using that approach, we saw dozens of stores, from Prada to Restoration Hardware, one of the few interior decorating stores with beautiful items.

I am not looking to be inspired in my line of business, because when it comes to that field the Americans are trailing far behind the Dutch, but I am there to immerse myself in the richness of the retail experience. We go there to enjoy the layout of the store, the customer approach and especially how to turn your store into a theatre of sorts, and that is what they do especially well in New York. One of the most appealing concepts to me is “Eataly” from Italy by Oscar Farinetti, an amazing retail spectacle with Italian food, barely ten years old and the basis of the Food Market from Jumbo supermarkets. You should look it up on Google; it is completely impossible to explain in text and so spectacularly cool that it is a sheer feast for the eyes. Because the stores in NYC are open late every single night of the week, you can experience a lot in three days, but at night the proverbial soles of your shoes are worn thin from the long stretches of walking.

In terms of restaurants, the people of New York can also hold their own, with restaurants that provide “theatrics” - or rather the ultimate experience in addition to good food. Tao and Buddakan are prime examples of that, such a show and interior, wow!

After three long days Sjors and I left really early in the morning (we had to catch a cab at 4:30) for sister and aunt Jacky and uncle Jim in Arizona. We flew to Phoenix on a five-hour flight from NYC, with a new-found awareness of the vastness of this enormous country. We had already observed that the temperature was quite high; in Phoenix and Scottsdale it was well over 40 degrees Celsius, 104 degrees Fahrenheit, which was not very pleasant of course. But my sister and her loving husband have a summer house up in the mountains nowadays, less than two hour’s drive from the airport.

Because this house is at an altitude of 1500 meters, the temperature is about 10 degrees lower and has a pleasant breeze, with a climate perfectly suited for outdoor eating, pleasant walks and enjoying life.

The nature is also breathtakingly beautiful. It was lovely to be with them again.

Possibly because she lives so far from the place she was born, she has saved many old photos that I had no recollection of. Going through them, we discovered a wonderful photo of Sjors with my mother on top of a bookcase dating 21 years ago. Sjors at age two, laughing out loud with grandma on the (then Ikea) couch at our old home. My mother passed away that very same year, 20 years ago next November already; time really flies. It is especially nice as there are hardly any photos of Sjors with his grandma and he is barely able to remember her, so that makes it extra-special. Neither of my parents have even met Bess, our youngest; they had already died by then. They have also seen little to nothing from Rivièra Maison, since the addition of furniture and a true concept were actually formed with the opening of the Kalvertoren store in October 1997 and they had already passed away by then. Americans say blood is thicker than water, meaning that nothing is stronger than family ties, and that is true. Cherish those ties and enjoy your family and loved ones.

People who have read my columns more often know by now that I adore the summer and sun. The beginning of the autumn and advent of bleaker weather and shorter days do not appeal to me at all ... What I do consider a benefit or highlight of autumn is the option of lighting a fire in the fireplace. I love the smell of a crackling fire and the sight of a room filled with lit candles. I am a man who is, unsurprisingly considering my business, especially sensitive to atmosphere, and I have seen that we have passed these genes to our children, as all the kids, including Sjors, are fond of lighting candles when they are home alone. How can you live without that atmosphere?

ULTIMATE FEELING OF HOME I 13

Sanne Hans (30) is the front woman and guitar player of the famous Dutch band ‘Miss Montreal’. She was already building a career as singersongwriter in 2008 when she was asked to feature in a TV commercial for Slankie, a cheese spread brand. In October of that very same year she released her first single ‘Just a Flirt’, which soon proved to be a huge hit.

In 2014 her musical activities were rewarded when she received the 3FM Award for best female singer. At the beginning of 2015, she started her theatre tour ‘Onmeunig Sanne’, performing in 40 different theatres, complete with a kitchen table from Rivièra Maison. This season Sanne can be seen in her role as a coach on the popular Dutch TV show ‘The Voice of Holland’.

For the autumn campaign for Rivièra Maison, we visited Sanne Hans, better known as Miss Montreal. Sanne has been a fan of Rivièra Maison for years and her favourite kitchen table even toured with her last spring.

“I really love coming home.”

Sanne Hans, born in Hardenberg, has been living in Amersfoort for about five years now, of which the last two have been in a lovely house dating back from the early 1900s. “At the end of 2013 I passed this house during one of my driving lessons and I thought, wow, would this still be for sale? And yes indeed, the deal was easily closed.

been connected to each other with a kind of glass hallway, really beautiful. The garden, the water, my old steel dinghy, the wood stove and the beautiful bedroom: yes, it is an incredibly cool house in which I feel totally at home.”

“I regularly visit the island of Bonaire. We have a group of friends over there who we regularly visit a few times a year, but no matter how nice and beautiful that place is, I really love coming home! In my own home, at my own kitchen table or leaning back on the couch dressed in my long baggy sweater, I can really be myself and I am free to do whatever I want. It’s really nice.

My ultimate way to relax is in front of the TV. Nothing better during winter than watching ice skating in front of the TV all weekend long; then I am really into it!

The Voice Starting at the end of September, Sanne can be seen as a member of the jury in The Voice of Holland: a new challenge!

Sanne: “I thought it was a lot of fun to show something of myself. Slamming that button is fantastic, of course, but also coaching those talented people to maximise their potential was a lot of fun to do! We have such talent in the Netherlands.

Of course it is exciting to begin such a new adventure, but the way it is going now feels really good.

I can accompany my candidates and myself on my guitar and that really adds something; it is really cool to be able to do that.”

serves 3-4 people 8 slices of (stale) white bread 1 egg 200 ml milk 1 sachet of vanilla sugar 1/2 tbsp cinnamon 25 gr white castor sugar (dairy) butter 1 pomegranate 8 strawberries 250 ml whipping cream Whisk the egg with the milk, vanilla sugar, cinnamon and castor sugar together into a smooth mixture. Cut the crusts off the slices of bread. Dredge the slices of bread through the mixture, then fry them in butter.

Serve them hot and season them with some cinnamon and sugar. Decorate with whipped cream, pomegranate seeds and strawberries.

Nico’s Styling tips Autumn always reminds me of the forest walks I made with my parents and sister. And of chestnuts, which we stuck together with toothpicks to create the cutest stick figures. I collected leaves which I put in a phone book so they could be dried properly. I remember making postcards from them and sending them to my loved ones.

In autumn I love the coloured trees the most, all those different shades of orange, brown and beige: gorgeous. I adore leaves and bouquets of greenery and grass as you can see on these pages; beautiful bundles of grass in a vase.

It is high time to shake down the house again; anything resembling a summery theme needs to go into storage.

I have a need for warm colours and materials, such as big bowls with nuts. Magnolia leaves stacked together and tied into a cute package, beautifully presented on a silver cake stand with some votives tucked in between. I love our silver-glass hurricane lanterns as well, especially the ones with the strap moulded in the glass; I combine that one with a dish interspersed with some beautiful leather belts.

I replace all the summer pillows with fur and beige pillows. I am completely in the mood for autumn, so let the first storms come.

The Fiat 500, the most trendy car of the compact cars, is now available in a special Rivièra Maison edition! The car is available in a limited edition of only 100 cars at the Fiat dealers in Holland.

This luxury edition is provided with a panorama roof, new designer leather upholstery, parking sensors and automatic air-conditioning. The car also has special Rivièra Maison details in the interior and can be decorated at no extra cost with a special decal set, designed by Creative Director Nico Tijsen. Can you imagine yourself driving fashionably in that classy Fiat 500 Rivièra Maison limited edition?

Lovely! We are heading for autumn again and a new season means many new colours and styles. The new Rivièra Maison themes are perfectly in line with the styles we see on the catwalk. In the luxurious ski resort of Aspen, in the American state of Colorado, winter sports are glamorous and classy. People go up the slopes dressed like royals and wearing perfect make-up. It’s all about appearances; the ladies have their hair beautifully done and wear make-up that will stay perfect the entire day. In contrast to Europe, where the focus is on après-ski partying, people in Aspen spend the day outdoors and then sit down to an extensive dinner, dressed in their most glamorous finery.

A top tip for winter sports; pay careful attention to skin protection. Nowadays there are excellent skin care cream foundations with UV protection, essential for that bright sun at high altitude.

The Oxford theme also appeals greatly to me this fall. That certain student style, young people, going out in abundance, reflected in exuberant hair and make-up. This past summer we already noted darker colours for the lips, and this fall we see that the top brands are presenting new, matte lipsticks in the most gorgeous shades of red, such as crimson and cherry. When it comes to hairstyles, we see a lot of flowing hair left to its own devices, but I vastly prefer hair that is left loose in the back but partly pinned up in the front. This effect is achieved by slightly back combing from the crown and fastening the front portion of the hair just behind the crown. Flowing locks, yet classy, a perfect fit for this fall’s new themes.

Marc Lubach (35) does the hair and make-up for a number of Dutch stars, heads the crew on various fashion shows for top Dutch couturiers and handles make-up on all of Rivièra Maison's photo and film shoots.

Rivièra Maison in retail innovation laboratory in The Hague The Store of the Future opened in The Hague in late June 2015.

Rather than a traditional retail venue, Store of the Future is an innovative laboratory where visitors can explore and test what the physical store environment might look like in future.

The Municipality of The Hague partnered with Q&A Research and Consultancy to create Store of the Future, its first retail innovation lab, which aims to show how shopping can become more fun and above all easier in future using technology. Working in collaboration with the partners and retailers at Store of the Future, a test environment is created where consumers can explore products and services in new and interactive ways.

Rivièra Maison is one of the participating retailers at Store of the Future. An augmented reality app is being developed for Rivièra Maison so you can see what a chair, sofa or other piece of furniture would look like in your own home. Chanel, Queen of fashion Rue Cambon in Paris has become famous in the fashion world thanks to Coco Chanel, the ‘Queen of Fashion’. She acquired her first building on 31 Rue Cambon in Paris in 1918; by the late 1920s she owned five buildings in the area.

Chanel let the woman be a woman again thanks to her signature designs like the deux-pièce, which became widely known as the ‘Chanel suit’, and the handbag with the shoulder strap.

Store of the Future is situated on the ground floor of New Babylon in The Hague and will be open seven days a week, until 1 August 2016.
