FIGHTING FOR TWO Anticipating the start of a new family evokes an array of emotions – future moms and dads feel excited, hopeful, overwhelmed, and even a little scared. After all, they have full responsibility for a very small, very dependent human being. Imagine feeling all of this plus getting the terrifying news of a cancer diagnosis. This is Kaycee Varney’s story.

Only two months into her pregnancy, Kaycee was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She promptly started chemotherapy and radiation while facing the challenges of carrying her first child.

Dad-to-be Caleb was Kaycee’s rock. Although the family was told that the treatments may lead to unexpected complications with pregnancy, they carefully mapped out a plan that included the world class medical staff at Wake Forest Baptist Health. Understanding that their baby would be born early, Caleb and Kaycee sought treatment at Wake Health - a hospital that could provide the care both mom and child would need.

LOVE NOTES

PET THERAPY WALL “We love our four-legged volunteers!”

Baby Emma arrived early at 36 weeks and weighed only 2 lbs., 13 oz. Despite her size, Kaycee said that “Emma was perfect! All she had to do was grow bigger.”

The Varney family spent the first days of Emma’s life with us at our Ronald McDonald House. They were grateful to be close to Emma and to have a place to rest, eat, and meet other families. The Varneys’ extended family in their hometown of Morganton even launched a movement called “Kaycee and Emma Strong, Fighting for Two.” Prayers, support, and expert medical care converged, and Emma gained enough weight to go home after only ten days.

Our therapy dogs "smiles" are "calming signals" and our families love them!

Family Support Services Manager Heather Rompel captured Teddie, Sissie, Koda Koda, Sammy, Sissie Sammy Zooka, Zooka Pearl, Pearl and Mystery hamming it up for their headshots!

They have grown closer to each other and their communities at home and at the RMHWS through this process. The Varneys’ smiles are sunny, wide and full of optimism – who can help but smile when thinking about Emma’s arrival and Kaycee’s journey to become cancer-free? The Varney family is glowing with happiness and pride as they anticipate Emma’s bright future.

COMFORT • ENCOURAGEMENT • FAMILY • LOVE These are just a few words that are found in the house-shaped design that Welcome Center volunteer Janet Ersoy lovingly cross stitched. Janet participated in the Ronald McDonald House Cross Stitch Project which began in 2015 with the goal of filling every RMH with this beautiful and meaningful word design.

Even the thread is meaningful as it is a part of the legacy of one of Janet’s closest family friends.

I hope you, your family, and friends suffered little to no damage from Hurricanes Florence and Michael. Thankfully, we had time to prepare and our House suffered no damage or loss of power.

Like these hurricanes, the antepartum moms we serve are preparing for challenges their newborn child will face, and it can be said that these challenges come in various categories: Category One – where the child will be helped with a surgery as close to birth as possible; and additional medical procedures should not be necessary.

Category Five – where the newborn will need immediate medical attention and ongoing treatment well into their teens or beyond.

Our Ronald McDonald House and two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are part of the team that helps these moms strengthen their support systems prior to the birth of their child. We help these parents stay close to their child during those initial procedures and surgeries and we will be here for follow-up procedures, surgeries and wellness check-ups.

You, our generous donors and volunteers, play the same role for these families that you may play during hurricanes – providing fresh food, water, and manpower while expecting moms stay at our House or visit our Family Rooms and again after the child is born. Thank you for keeping us well-stocked and helping our House, Family Rooms, and families be ready for the next storm whether it be wind and rain or medical emergency. You truly keep us safe in the storm that Keeps Families Close!

DAY OF HOPE AND HAPPINESS North Carolina State Fair The Fourth Annual Day of Hope and Happiness was celebrated by Ronald McDonald Houses across North Carolina. Thirty-eight family members from RMHWS enjoyed an all-expenses paid day at the fairgrounds riding roller coasters, enjoying funnel cake, and being together just for the fun of it. The smiles say it all!

Our Lunches With Love program provides Family Room guests with a freshly prepared bag lunch.

Teams prepare the lunches in our House kitchen and deliver them to our Family Rooms.
