Hunting Hunters travelling to our area will find a wide range of hunting opportunities. With many remote locations to choose from, you could find yourself hiking through some apparent untouched wilderness in search of the north’s majestic giants. It is known that our wilderness provides some of the best hunting for Black Bear and Moose in North America. In addition to these popular animals, hunters can enjoy opportunities for whitetail deer, small game, and duck and migratory bird hunting.
Whitetail deer Whitetail deer can be found throughout much of Ontario. Their range appears to be expanding northward over time. Abundant food makes almost any forested or bushy area suitable for deer, including parks and green spaces created by people. In winter, as snow deepens, deer concentrate in areas that provide food and shelter from deep snow. During the spring and summer, deer eat leafy material from woody plants, grasses and herbs. They also eat mushrooms and blueberries. In autumn and winter, deer depend largely on the twigs and buds that are within their reach. Acorns are a favourite autumn food for whitetail deer living in eastern Canada. Size: 0.9 to 1.1 m (3.0-3.5 ft) Adult Buck: 45 to 136 kg (100-300 Ib) Adult Doe: 39 to 60 kg (85-130 Ib)
Moose Moose are found across northern and central Ontario. They live near lakes, muskegs and streams of the boreal forest and on the northern tundra. Moose are the largest animal in Ontario. Large males (bulls) weigh up to 600 kilograms. Moose live on a diet of twigs, leaves, shrubs, upland plants and water plants. Moose tolerate cold very well but suffer from heat. In summer, especially during black fly season, moose often cool off in water for several hours each day. Moose are strong swimmers and can dive more than five metres in search of food on the bottom of the lake. Size: 1.5 to 1.8 m (5.5-6.0 ft) Bull: 400 to 545 kg (880-1,200 Ib) Cow: 375 to 535 kg (825-1,180 Ib)
Black Bear Black bears live throughout most of Ontario and prefer forested areas where they are best able to find food, refuge and den sites. When they are not hibernating, bears spend most of their time looking for food. In the summer, they eat berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. In the fall, they turn their attention to hazelnuts, mountain ash, acorns and beech nuts. While black bears will eat carrion, insects, fish, deer and moose calves, the bulk of their diet is made up of plants. They like to find lots of high energy food - like huge berry patches - that will help them fatten up fast. Their survival and ability to have young depends on them doubling their weight before winter hibernation. While black is the most common colour, brown and cinnamon phases also occur. akwash Provincial Park located just north of Ear Falls, is the perfect location for your next family camping trip. This 3,993 hectare park boasts 69 campsites with 29 being electrical.
All the amenities you need to make your experience your home away from home are available including showers, flush toilets and a laundromat. Whether you come for the day, or spend a few nights, the park has activities everyone can enjoy. Every year in August , a day loaded with fun activities for the whole family called Pakwash Play Day is hosted. Five Lakes Lodge Five Lakes Lodge is a completely modern, drive-in hunting and fishing resort. Located on the shores of Gullrock Lake, only 10 minutes south of Red Lake Ontario. Gullrock is known for its abundance of Walleye and Northern Pike and consistently produces many trophy fish. Offering day trips to 3 other Outpost lakes, where you can be the only boat on the lake and catch Walleye, Northern, Muskie and Perch. Fall bear hunting and bird hunting are available for the avid hunter. With the abundance of clear cuts and bush trails, wildlife is never hard to find. With two different BMAs you have the option of a fully baited and guided hunt or can set up your own self-guided hunt. Wolf hunts are available for the winter hunter. These hunts are guided and baited in remote locations that are accessible by snow machine. The hunting is done out of a heated ground blind that is set up for a rifle hunt. Winter at Five Lakes Lodge offers a warm cabin with satellite TV and internet. Ice fishing lakes that are only accessible by snow machine and trail riding the numerous brush trail, is every winter enthusiast’s dream. or 13 years, a small but dedicated group has been making Red Lake an attractive place to live in. Thanks to the support of The Municipality of Red Lake, the generosity of locals at
fundraisers and a small group of volunteers, thousands of hours have been spent beautifying the towns in our Municipality. Communities in Bloom is proud to put forth the efforts that result in the showcasing of a clean, appealing and thriving Municipality.

Maintenance of the local flower beds such as the Perennial Garden at the “turnaround” in Red Lake, the “Lakeview Garden”, the flower bed at the Municipal Office, the flower beds at Rahill Beach , the flowers in Madsen, and many more!

“ADOPT-A-POT”: 145 Adopt-A-Pots are planted and sold each Spring. Communities in Bloom plants the pots and delivers them to the businesses and individuals who purchase them. Carol Fischer from Chukuni Greenhouses is a great help in this project as are many local businesses.

The rejuvenation of Norseman Park is another exciting project spearheaded by this group. Their Butterfly Garden is designed to attract Monarch Butterflies to the milkweed planted in the park.

“Garbathon” - cleaning up litter throughout the Municipality.
Communities in Bloom adds magic to our area every year at Christmas with their ice candle project. They make 250 ice candles and place them throughout the Municipality with the help of Supreme Auto Body and the Harmony Centre. They are lit by the families and friends of volunteers on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Years night. What a wonderful way of beautifying the Municipality and of saying thanks to the people who have helped Communities in Bloom throughout the year. Many people have made driving around to see the candles part of their Christmas celebration.

Every year is different in the amount of drums that joins in, but what doesn’t change is the amazing traditional music and dances that drummers and dancers share with you. Listen and watch the festivities, or even join in on one of the ceremonial dances. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to take part.
