FROM THE HEART
A Message from our Board
Chair
–
Meredith Clavenna
MEREDITH CLAVENNA Board Chair
Dear Friends of RMHD,
It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the new Board Chair of Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. My connection to this mission is deeply personal. When our daughter was born with a congenital heart defect and required surgery far from home, RMH was there for us with a comfortable place to rest, compassionate volunteers, and the kind of support we didn’t even know we needed during one of the most stressful times of our lives.
Today, that baby girl is an 18-year-old who just graduated from high school. That experience forever shaped me and continues to fuel my commitment to helping other families stay together and find comfort when their child needs critical medical care far from home.
For the past 44 years, RMHD has been a place where love, hope, and compassion fill every hallway, every shared meal, and every heartfelt conversation. As we look to the future, I’m filled with both excitement and optimism. Pediatric hospitals in the Dallas–Fort Worth area continue to grow, and we anticipate more families traveling to our city to access DFW’s world-class pediatric care. In response,
RMHD is committed to expanding our facilities, enhancing our services, and continuing to provide a warm, supportive home away from home for families seeking the best health care for their children.
None of this would be possible without the incredible community that surrounds us. Our dedicated staff, loyal volunteers, and generous donors and partners make our mission possible every single day. Their compassion ensures that families can focus on what matters most: caring for their child.
I hope you enjoy the latest edition of From The Heart. Inside, you’ll find inspiring stories and meaningful glimpses into the work happening every day at the House That Love Built.
Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for making room in your heart for the families we serve. I look forward to all we will accomplish together in the months and years ahead.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Meredith Clavenna Board Chair

Michael Banks: A Quiet Hero Behind the Scenes
At the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, magic doesn’t just happen in the playrooms or kitchens—it hums behind the walls, runs through the pipes, and glows from every light throughout The House. What visitors may not notice right away is a quiet force working behind the scenes to make their days just a little bit easier: Michael Banks.
As a professional in the maintenance department, Mike might not be the first face families meet, but he’s part of the heart that keeps this House running. Whether he’s repairing what’s broken, placing orders, or pitching in wherever needed, he approaches each task with humility and heart. “I try to give my 100%,” he says simply—and he means it.
Before joining the team, Banks hadn’t known much about Ronald McDonald House. “It was all new to me,” he admits. But he quickly learned what makes this place different: the families. Their strength, determination, and hope became his motivation. “It’s inspiring just being part of something that helps them keep going,” he says.
What stands out to Mike? The holidays. “Even with their health situations, the kids light up with joy during Christmas,” he recalls. “That’s when you know what we do matters.”
Banks’ team shares his spirit. Whether it’s hanging decorations, fi xing leaky sinks, or responding to a last-minute need, he and his coworkers act fast, always focused on one goal: making life easier for families facing unimaginable challenges.
For him, the job isn’t stressful—it’s fulfilling. “You come in, and everything’s good,” he smiles. “We believe everything can be good.”
And that belief—that steady, quiet optimism—is what makes Mike Banks not just a handyman, but a true caregiver-magician.
Want to be part of the magic? Volunteer. Donate. Help us keep families strong when they need it most. Because behind every act of care, there’s someone like Mike making hope happen.
Meet our Building Operations Manager: Victor Cornejo
If you’ve ever spent time at Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, chances are you’ve experienced or witnessed the warmth of a comforting meal, the joy of holiday decorations, or the peace of a cozy, welcoming space. What you might not realize is that behind every flicker of light, hum of an HVAC system, and ready-to-welcome room stands Victor Cornejo, RMHD’s dedicated Building Operations Manager.
Since joining the team in October 2022, Victor has quietly but powerfully made his mark on the House. His role isn’t always
front and center. “One thing about building operations most people don’t see is the amount of ‘invisible but critical’ work that is involved,” he says. “We work behind the scenes to ensure the comfort of our families and staff. We’re also on alert during weather events and must be ready to respond to a situation as soon as possible.”
His connection to Ronald McDonald House of Dallas began long before his official job title. Years ago, he was part of a cooking group with a former employer, preparing turkeys for families during the holidays. “I just fell
in love with the House and the mission,” he recalls. That initial spark turned into a full-time calling — one that’s both demanding and deeply fulfilling.
A typical day for Victor involves overseeing RMHD’s 78,000 square foot facility and its critical building systems like HVAC, fire alarms, and room readiness. He keeps a close eye on the moving parts that keep RMHD safe, functional, and welcoming for every family who walks through its doors. And with so many families coming and going (an average of 70 a day), staying ahead of problems before they
happen is no small feat. “That’s the challenge,” he admits. “I have to keep my team focused and on task to prioritize any issues that may arise. I’m lucky I can rely on my team and leadership to help me ensure everything is running smoothly.”
Even when multiple emergencies pop up at once — which happens more often than you’d think — Cornejo keeps his cool by breaking the workload into smaller, manageable goals. “Slowing down actually helps me take care of more issues during the day,” he explains.
Victor Cornejo
The House’s Great Room is a favorite space for Victor, especially during Christmastime. “It brings our families a lot of joy during difficult times,” he says, his voice hinting at the meaning behind those twinkling lights and festive trees. And while every season holds its own magic, he has a special fondness for Halloween. “I love interacting with people during Halloween time,” he laughs. “It’s just a fun, lighthearted break for everyone.”
Cornejo’s work isn’t limited to behind-the-scenes fixes — it’s rooted in collaboration. He works closely with the Family Services Team, Volunteer Services Managers, and the Family Activities Manager to coordinate projects, from mural paintings to deep cleanings and special service events. This teamwork ensures the House remains not just operational, but truly a home-away-from-home for families in medical crisis. When asked what keeps him motivated through the long, demanding days, Victor doesn’t hesitate. “Knowing that I can do something that will impact a lot of families in a positive way keeps me
motivated to come to work every day.”
And for those considering supporting Ronald McDonald House of Dallas — whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word — Victor offers heartfelt advice: “Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is a special place. I would encourage everyone to come by for a visit. The energy and joy of our mission must be experienced at least once.”
It’s people like Victor — working quietly, tirelessly, and with heart — who help make that mission possible every single day.

After nearly a decade of wagging tails, warm snuggles, and endless cheer, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is giving a standing ovation to one of its most treasured team members—Shiloh, our beloved Chief Cheer Officer—as he officially stepped into retirement on May 20, 2025
Shiloh joined the RMHD family in 2016 under the care of his devoted “mom”, Whitney Newell, our Chief Financial Officer, and from the very first tail wag, he knew he had an important job to do. With his gentle eyes and calm spirit, Shiloh brought instant comfort to families walking through our doors, especially those facing their hardest days. Whether it was greeting new guests with a quiet hug or cuddling up next to a child during a difficult moment, Shiloh had a sixth sense for when someone needed a little extra love.
Over the years, he’s become a favorite, not only among the families we serve, but also among our staff (his co-workers), as he has shared an office with Whitney all these years, giving him close proximity to RMHD staff regularly. Shiloh could often be found making his rounds through the halls, offering emotional support (and asking for belly rubs) to anyone in need. For many of us at RMHD, seeing Shiloh each day is a joyful reminder of the love and healing we strive to provide.
While Shiloh is stepping back from his full-time duties and won’t be attending large events anymore, we’re happy to share that he’ll still be around the House in a more part-time role. Think of it as semiretirement—he’ll continue to visit, give hugs, and brighten days, just at a slightly slower pace and a more limited basis (and with more naps).
Shiloh’s presence and Whitney’s compassionate work as his “mom” and handler has been a gift to all of us. Their shared legacy of unconditional love and service will forever be a part of the heart of RMHD.
Here’s to Shiloh—you’ll always be our top dog!

Why Emma Succar Still Shows Up to Give Hope
At 90 years young, Emma Succar doesn’t just volunteer—she inspires. With her contagious smile and boundless energy, she has become a fixture at the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas that she lovingly refers to as her “happy place.” But her journey to our House began with loss.
“I had just lost my husband,” she says candidly. “My only daughter lives in Austin, and I was looking for a family—and something nice to do.” That “something nice” blossomed into more than a decade of compassionate service to families facing their hardest moments.
Emma’s favorite part of volunteering? The families. She’s formed lasting bonds with people from Egypt, Peru, Bali, and most memorably, Russia. One girl from Russia, denied schooling because of her condition, came to RMHD with her mother, desperate for care. “They didn’t speak a word of English. But they watched Sesame Street and started learning.
A volunteer eventually invited them into her home, and that girl went on to earn her degree at UT Arlington on a Wilma Potter Scholarship. Her mom became a nurse,” Emma beams with pride. “Ronald McDonald House helped make that possible.”
Still hitting the gym three times a week, Emma also volunteers at the Dallas Arboretum. Her secret to staying young? “Keep moving, keep hoping, and keep giving.” To young people, she offers gentle wisdom: “Get away from your telephone. Share. Give. Learn how good it feels.”
With every warm greeting at the door or story shared over coffee, Emma brings the magic that defines Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. She’s proof that compassion never ages—and that it only takes one person to light up a house built on love.

As our first major fundraiser of 2025, ROCK THE HOUSE set the stage for what we hope will become a beloved annual tradition. From the spirited paddle raise, to the lively auction and unforgettable entertainment, every dollar raised during this evening directly impacts RMHD’s core programs.
“Our mission cannot be fulfilled without you,” Jill Cumnock,
The energy was electric, the dance floor was packed, and hearts were full at Ronald McDonald House of Dallas’ inaugural ROCK THE HOUSE event — and thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, over $400,000 was raised to ensure our doors are open to comfort and care for the hundreds of families that depend on our home-away-from-home. u
RMHD CEO expressed to event sponsors, guests, and volunteers on the big night in February. “Your generosity translates into critical care and services for families during one of the most challenging times in their lives.”
We extend our gratitude to our dynamic volunteer leadership -- event co-chairs, Laura Petka and Lindy Berkley, and our Host Committee. It was a privilege to pivot to this music centric event
and to also honor two longtime friends of RMHD, Mersina Stubbs and Bob Penn, with the 2025 Estess-Fuller Heart of Gold Award.
As the last notes of music faded and the final bids were placed, one thing was clear — this was more than a party. It was a powerful reminder of the strength of our community, the healing power of kindness, and the joy that can be found even on the hardest days.
The Segovia Family’s Journey to our House A Place of Comfort:
For the Segovia family, the past two months have been a whirlwind of uncertainty, medical procedures, and unexpected blessings. Jaime, Gloria, and their baby boy, Jaime Jr., traveled over 600 miles from their home in New Mexico to Dallas in search of the specialized care their son needed. Born with a rare birth defect called bladder exstrophy — a condition where the bladder develops outside the body due to an abdominal wall defect — little Jaime Jr. required immediate and complex medical attention. Initially, the family sought care
closer to home in El Paso, Texas. But after learning that Jaime Jr. might also need orthopedic surgery alongside his urological procedures, it quickly became clear that their local medical team wasn’t equipped for the challenge. That’s when they were referred to Dallas for a second opinion.
“After speaking with Dr. Jacobs here in Dallas, he told us he already had an orthopedic team ready to go,” said Jaime. “We knew then this was where we needed to be.” While finding the right medical
care was a critical step, another challenge loomed: how would they manage being so far from home for weeks, possibly months, while staying close to their son during such an uncertain time? That’s where Ronald McDonald House of Dallas (RMHD) became an essential part of their story.
“The situation was complicated because we live far away and didn’t know what to do,” Gloria shared. “They told us he was going to need an operation, and we also needed to watch over him closely for weeks.
“Ronald McDonald House gave us the chance to be together again.”
Realizing we could rely on the help from RMHD was such a relief. It’s so close to the hospital — all we have to do is track his medicine and care for him.”
For families like the Segovias, RMHD provides more than just a place to sleep. It offers peace of mind. “When we first found out about his bladder exstrophy, we didn’t know if he would need one surgery, two, or three,” Jaime recalled. “Finding out we could stay here lifted a huge weight off our shoulders. Being just a threeminute drive from the care team is such a comfort. We don’t have to worry about food, a place to stay, or transportation — we can focus entirely on our son.”
Now, as they continue this challenging journey, the Segovia

family wants to extend a heartfelt message to the donors and volunteers who make our House possible.
“We know everyone’s time is precious,” Jaime said. “And we want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the time, donations, and love that go into making this place what it is. Thank you for everything you do for families like ours, who come here from all over the world. We are so grateful.”
ACN Elevates Their Giving
We are beyond grateful to ACN for matching their employees and team donations and helping raise over $20,000 for RMHD for a second year in a row at their ELEVATE Dallas conference in March. Their enthusiastic generosity has helped us meet the growing need for our services this spring.
IB Roof Systems Raises Big Money for Dallas and Fort Worth Houses Through Inaugural Tourney

Screening of Feature Film About RMHC’s
Origin Story
Thanks to the generous support of our friends at DirecTV, RMHD rolled out the red carpet for a special screening of “Audrey’s Children” at Angelika Film Center & Café in Dallas. It was an honor to share this powerful film with our staff, donors, partners, and volunteers—each of whom helps carry forward the legacy of Dr. Audrey Evans, the pioneering pediatric oncologist and visionary behind Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Dr. Evans not only helped open the very first Ronald McDonald
House in Philadelphia 51 years ago, providing a lifeline for families with seriously ill children, but she also revolutionized cancer treatment with the creation of the Evans Staging System, which forever changed the way neuroblastoma is diagnosed and treated worldwide. Prior to the staging system, the survival rate for childhood cancer was 15%, today it is typically above 80%.
Her vision, compassion, and tireless dedication are proof of the incredible difference one person can make. Thank you again to DIRECTV for helping us celebrate
A WISH
A garden where love takes flight, A house, a beacon in the night. Whispers, soft with gentle cheer. Families are gathered here.
Butterflies dancing on fragile wings, Hearts fluttering with hope that sings. Courage floating through the air, Soaking walls with dreams and care.
Love, a mortar true and strong. A home, a shelter, all belong. Within its warm embrace, find peace, And, for a moment, let worries cease.

A Recipe For Hope
Baking Comfort, Building Community, Warming Hearts
The organization is also among the cherished supporters and champions of RMHD whose compassion and commitment have touched the lives of our families for years.
This year, in addition to regularly cooking and serving meals to our House guests, Dallas Service Forum continued their tradition of giving back in a meaningful way by awarding RMHD with a generous grant used to purchase new ovens, providing a much-needed upgrade to our Family Kitchen. This wonderful organization’s heartwarming support will be felt in every home-cooked meal, every birthday cake, and every late-night comfort snack shared.
“The Family Kitchen is a special spot in our House,” says Dr. Jennifer Pitts, RMHD’s Chief Operating Officer. “It’s where families gather after long days at the hospital to prepare their favorite meals, and where new friendships often begin over a cup of coffee or a plate of warm cookies. Dallas Service Forum’s generous investment helps ensure this vital space remains welcoming, functional, and comforting for the families who need it most.”
Dallas Service Forum, is an area volunteer organization of women dedicated to providing services and financial support to children, families and the elderly in Dallas.
Over the years, Dallas Service Forum has been a faithful friend to Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, offering not only financial support but also their time, talent, and heart. From serving meals, providing essential household items, to organizing family activities, their dedication to our noble mission shines through in everything they do. Their kindness continues to help us build a House filled with hope, comfort, and healing for every family who walks through our doors.

A Message from Our CEO
Dear Friends and Supporters,
As I reflect on 2024, I’m filled with immense gratitude for your unwavering support of Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. In a year marked by both extraordinary need and inspiring growth, your generosity made all the difference.

This year also marked a time of growth for our House—expanding our reach, deepening our services, and reaffirming our commitment to being a haven of healing. None of this would be possible without the generous and loyal community of donors, partners, and friends who believe in our noble mission.

Hope smiles
from the
threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier.‘
Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is devoted to helping sick children and their families and this has always spoken to our heart strings.
– Ronnie and Dan Cohen
Ronald McDonald House of Dallas (RMHD) provides essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing when children need healthcare.
In an effort to lessen the burden, reduce stress, keep the family intact, and enhance the quality of life for these families, RMHD provides temporary housing in a caring home-like atmosphere. The Ronald McDonald House program was built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal, or where they will lay their head at night to rest.
