ANNUAL REPORT
2021 Celebrating 40 Years
The Winckel Family
OUR MISSION To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children seeking medical treatment in a St. Louis-area hospital.
LETTER
2021
FROM THE CHAIRPERSON As we embarked on 2021, battered by a once-in-a-century global pandemic and unable to care for as many families, expectations for the year were muted. The 40th Anniversary of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis could have passed us by without any notable achievements, and it would have been an acceptable outcome given the environment. But as Dan Harbaugh likes to say, “We are the Ronald McDonald House, baby!” When you read the financial report, you will see that we had another RECORD year in revenue from our core programs at over $6.4 million. Wow! All our fund-raising events returned in person in 2021, timed around pandemic gathering restrictions, and we were able to all come together again. The incredible efforts of our McDonald’s owner-operators in the RoundUp for RMHC program resulted in over $1.7 million in net revenue to the charity. No other co-op in the country has contributed EVEN HALF of this amount to their local chapter. As a result of our events, the Round-Up for RMHC program, and generous donors, we were able to “bank” almost $1.9 million after expenses. Increasing our assets will allow us to take care of even more guest families. Over the course of 2021, we were able to phase in the
core programs we had in place before the pandemic disruption – our Houses re-opened to new families, our in-hospital Family Rooms were back up and running, we operated with a full staff, and our volunteers were able to reengage. We were able to serve 400 families in our three Ronald McDonald Houses and over 2,700 families in our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (that's 19,000 visitors) in 2021. And if all these efforts weren’t enough, we kicked off a capital campaign in March for the eventual construction of a new 72-bedroom House to service our city hospital partners and their families. This new facility will allow us to more than double our capacity in the city and will feature an immune-suppressed wing, a commercial kitchen, a wellness center, office space to consolidate our staff, and flexible conference space. We have close to $22 million raised of our $30 million goal in pledges and hope to break ground in early fall 2022. Simply remarkable. The successes of 2021 are due to ALL of YOU – our donors, volunteers, staff, board, committee members, owner-operators, and hospital partners. We are SO fortunate for all of you, and I am honored to be a part of our family. With Gratitude,
Jeff Barone Board Chair

One of the worst things that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, life stops overnight, and the world is full of worry and fear. For many of these families, there is an added stress: distance. Sometimes the best medical care available is hundreds of miles from home - or more. In addition, families face the financial demands of mounting medical bills, job insecurity and a healing journey that can take months or even years. This is why Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms exist: to keep families close to their seriously ill children.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT We have now survived two years of our world being turned upside-down. But we are the Ronald McDonald House, and as is usually the case, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis not only survived, but we thrived! Things continue to return to some form of “normal” here; volunteers returning to work at the Houses and Family Rooms, events taking place inperson, and dinner groups being allowed to come into the Houses to prepare meals once again for the families. The biggest return for us was the relaunching of our Capital Campaign to build a new Ronald McDonald House for the families of St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. We received almost $22 million in this effort. As we continue to solicit donors, businesses, and Friends of the House, we are optimistic that we will be breaking ground in 2022 on a new 72-bedroom House. The new House, pictured on the right, will allow us to add capacity to address our daily waiting list and accommodate even more families. 2021 brought us a record-setting year as it regarding Round-Up at local McDonald’s in St. Louis. The St. Louis market more than doubled the next closest Co-op in the US, generating over $2 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities, again showing that St. Louisans are incredibly generous. We hope we can continue to build on the success of 2021 as we move forward. All the Best,
Dan Harbaugh, President Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis
