Dear Educators, Club Moderators, Group Leaders, and Team Administrators (or all those at the helm of an organization that is looking for an easy / meaningful way to engage your memebers!)
Thank you for your interest in PopTabAPullOoza to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Louisiana.
Collecting tabs is a great way for all of us to really make a difference in the lives of families and children in need while recycling!
The PopTabAPullOoza competition is a show of spirit and philanthropy among local schools/ classrooms/ organizations to see who can pull together and donate the most pounds of pop tabs to RMHCSLA.
The competition begins at the start of the school year and the winner will be announced on after the drop off date for PopTabAPullOoza in May.
The winning organization will receive a special trophy and major bragging rights along with other surprises! We encourage you to rally your entire community to begin saving tabs at the start of the year and to coordinate a day with your parents groups and green clubs to gather them at your dedicated site prior to our big drop off event in May so that all your tabs can be delivered in one load!
This packet contains useful information that you can use to get your group’s collection campaign started, as well as many useful activities or curriculum add-ins that you can incorporate for all ages. There is also helpful information on collection containers, drop-off information and tools to promote your group’s participation in this program.
I hope your community finds this project rewarding. If we can be of assistance in any way, please feel free to contact us at 504.486.6668.
Poptastically,
Your friends at RMHCSLA
Last year we collected 1,235 pounds and this year, we collected 2001 pounds! Our goal for this year is 2,500 pounds, but really the sky is the limit. Our winner will be announced after PopTabAPullOoza in May with a press release, social media shoutouts and MORE!
This competition was created to find a simple way for even the youngest children to become more involved in the community and to simultaneously raise money for our families facing medical challenges of their critically ill or injured children By collecting tabs, we are able to support our families’ stay at the House during their child’s serious medical emergency.
The aluminum pop tabs are recycled, just like you would recycle plastic containers or newspapers The money generated from recycling the tabs is used in a general operating budget to ensure that the House remains open for families of sick or injured children. What are the pop tabs used for?
How much do you receive from recycling pop tabs?
The price of aluminum changes on a regular basis depending on the supply and demand. On average, the Ronald McDonald House receives $0.40-0.70 per pound of aluminum tabs.
WHY JUST THE TABS? WHY NOT CANS TOO?*
Cans can be messy and take up much more space. The tabs are clean, compact and easy to collect. In addition, the aluminum in the tab is higher-grade and has a higher recycling value
**Our generous partners at EMR RECYCLING have decided that ALL ALUMINUM will be accepted on our behalf, so if you have the ability and space to collect cans (or ANY aluminum), GO FOR IT!
Do I need a special container?
No special container needed. A large Ziplockbag, or plastic wide top container will do the trick! We do ask that your containers be clean. Wide top containers are preferred for easier emptying. NO MILK JUGS, PLEASE!
Do we need to collect a certain amount or count them?
Although some schools will make a math or science project out of collecting a million tabs, we’ll take as many as you collect. Whether it’s ten, ten thousand, or one million!
How do you donate?

Once you have decided to start your collection drive, you need to get your organization/ team/ group/ club/ class/ school excited about the project. Many do this by having contests or offering incentives to the top collectors. Usually, it is enough to just explain the purpose of the tab collection projects and how it benefits families and children in need, however, we have added curriculum or activity ideas. Once you decide to promote your collection drive, it is important that each participant have a goal to reach. Charting the progress of the collection drive in a visible area is a great way for each participant to stay motivated. A bulletin board, email update or newsletters are great ways to promote the project.
Our registration form can be found on the last page of our materials. All we need from you is the school name, what grades /teachers will be participating, and contact information. If you have any questions, please email alison@rmhcsla org
Work with the local community to solicit free incentives to reward students for their participation in the pop tab program
McDonald’s restaurants throughout Louisiana are very supportive of the pop tab program and may lend assistance to your school in the areas of marketing and logistical support. Please contact the McDonald’s restaurant in your area for more information.
1.) At Home: Encourage students’ parents to have collection containers at home. Soup cans, plastic baggies and cardboard boxes work well as tab collection containers.
2.) At your School: Many schools choose to use a large collection container centrally located in areas such as the school lobby, cafeteria or gym. Larger containers must be strongly reinforced in order to hold large amounts of pop tabs
3 ) You could ask your art clubs, tech clubs, and green clubs to create and decorate your containers and place them Students can also make their own containers for home use as part of an art project
How do we know how many pop tabs we have?
There is no reason to count individual tabs unless you want to count them as part of a related project. We'd love for you to weigh your tabs and take photos with them so we can add them to the press release, please send your photo along with organization/school name and tab poundage to Kristen Erdem: kristen.erdem@rmhc-sla.org. You can do this by weighing the tabs on a scale. Use the following information to calculate the amount of tabs your group has collected:
1 Pound = 1,000 Pop Tabs
1,000 Pounds = 1 Million Tabs

For younger students, have them guess how many pop tabs can fit into a jar, can, box, etc. and then have them count the pop tabs as they fill the object. For older students, they can weigh, measure, count, and graph the numbers How many weigh the same as a stapler (or other classroom objects)? How many tabs would it take to wrap around the world?
What is aluminum and where does it come from? What is its primary use?
Experiment #1: What happens when it gets cold?

Did you know? A pop tab withstands up to 110 pounds of tension exerted against it by the carbon dioxide in the soda But only 3-4 pounds of pull on the tab causes the tab to rupture, releasing the contents inside Source: Scientific American Http://www sciam com1296working html
