OUR MESSAGE

Celebrating 2 017

For Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington, 2017 was another exciting year of growth as we expanded to reach thousands more hospitalized children and their families with an evergrowing community of support. Our 2018 Community Report and Family Album is filled with so many beautiful moments, honors thousands of people and offers dozens of reasons to celebrate what we make possible together – a beautiful “home away from home” filled with every imaginable comfort for every family in need.

Over and above the 17,833 free night stays that we made available in 2017, we launched our first-ever in-hospital program to deliver our Hospitality à la Carte at Randall Children’s Hospital. With a team of dedicated volunteers and a rolling cart full of sweets, treats, games and toys, we began reaching children and their families by the hundreds with compassion and support delivered bedside. By year’s end, this magical new program had reached 4,300 children and their families. Today, our new fleet of Hospitality Carts is being readied for launch in two new hospitals - Salem Health and Oregon Health Science University.

We blew out a lot of candles in 2017 as we honored the 20th birthdays of our Bend Ronald McDonald House and our East Portland Ronald McDonald House. Meanwhile, we celebrated the construction of the OHSU Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion (home of our future South Waterfront Ronald McDonald House) and finalized the plans for our first-ever Springfield Ronald McDonald House – set to open on the campus of PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center in 2019.

Seriously ill children and their families made our Oregon Ronald McDonald Houses their “home away from home” in record numbers in 2017, and we inspired record-breaking community support to care for these families. In 2017, more than 1,900 volunteers and thousands of donors contributed $5.7M in revenue and support (up 16% from 2016). Our compassionate and dedicated staff were honored by the Oregon Business Journal as the #2 Best Medium-Sized Non-Profit To Work For In Oregon (look out #1 - we are coming for you!).

Our growth and expansion have a singular purpose: to provide access to medical care, a "home away from home" and a community of support for seriously ill or injured children and their families. The endless giggles, tearful smiles, heartfelt hugs and precious memories are all the thanks we need.

Keeping families close EVERY YEAR, thousands of families find themselves far from home when their ill or injured children require specialized care or hospitalization. For more than three decades, our Oregon Ronald McDonald Houses have offered these families comfort, support and a beautiful “home away from home”.

Our hospitality is also delivered à la carte to the bedsides of thousands of children and their families through our in-hospital Hospitality Cart program.

Thanks to the dedication and service of thousands of annual donors, more than 1,900 volunteers and 32 staff - every family that we host and help has the opportunity to benefit from home-cooked meals and fresh-baked cookies, activity programs and free services, beautiful indoor and outdoor play spaces and the loving support that kids (and their families) need to heal. Together, we are working to ensure that every child gets the medical care they need (with a heaping dose of love and support!), and that no family has to be separated from their sick child, regardless of where they live.

Serving more families than ever before RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE Charities of Oregon & SW Washington began supporting seriously ill children and their families in 1984, when our original West House opened on the campus of OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Thirteen years later, two more Ronald McDonald Houses opened on the campus of Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland and St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Today, we house and support as many as 56 families every night at our three Oregon Ronald McDonald Houses and provide our special brand of Hospitality à la Carte with our new in-hospital program at Randall Children’s Hospital. As more and more hospitalized children and their families reach out to us for support, we are committed to expanding to meet their needs. In 2018, our new Hospitality à la Carte program will expand into OHSU and Salem Health. In 2019, we will move our current westside Ronald McDonald House into the new OHSU Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion and open a brand new Ronald McDonald House in Springfield, Oregon, on the campus of PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center. OUR PORTLAND EAST HOUSE

Celebrating 20 years IN 2017 we celebrated the 20th Birthday of our amazing Portland East House. Located on the campus of Randall Children’s Hospital, our East House is home to 25 families every night and the administrative headquarters of our statewide organization. On any given evening, you can smell the delicious aroma of fresh-baked cookies, hear the sounds of children singing, or find a therapy animal ready to give and receive cuddles just inside the door. Our Portland East House is home to two outdoor playgrounds for kids who need to run and play and features quiet, cozy corners when families need a peaceful break.

OUR SOUTH WAT E R F R O N T H O U S E

Coming home in 2019 IN 2017, our future South Waterfront Ronald McDonald House continued to rise, floor by floor, as construction forged ahead at the OHSU Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion. When our new 38-room Ronald McDonald House opens for families in 2019 at the Pavilion, it will replace our current West House at the Marriott Residence Inn. Our new 25,000 square-foot Ronald McDonald House will be the largest in Oregon – offering beautiful play spaces, game rooms, an expansive family kitchen and dining area and a three-quarter acre rooftop garden and playground – just a short tram ride away from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

As we excitedly prepare for the Grand Opening, we continue to support seriously ill children and their families at our current West House with home-cooked meals and friendly volunteers, and our play spaces filled with crafts, childcare, and movie nights – offering compassionate hospitality and support when families need it the most.

Celebrating 20 years

OUR BEND Ronald McDonald House also celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2017. Nestled at the edge of the St. Charles Medical Center campus, this beautiful lodge-style House was constructed with towering local timbers, and features a massive stone fireplace and an unforgettable “great room”. It has been a comforting and peaceful “home away from home” for six families every night. With a playroom and expansive backyard featuring a basketball court, our Bend House has been a place of fun and joy during long hospital stays for thousands of families over the past two decades, and we look forward to the next 20 years of keeping families together while their children are receiving medical treatment far from home.

OUR NEW SPRINGFIELD HOUSE

Grand opening in 2019 IN 2019 we will open our doors and welcome families into our first-ever Springfield Ronald McDonald House – currently under construction on the campus of PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center. Home to as many as 10 children and their families every night, the Springfield Ronald McDonald House will be just steps away from the McKenzie River. With beautiful new guest rooms, outdoor play areas, and family-friendly community spaces, our new House will offer home-cooked meals, programs and a community of support for families when their children are receiving the medical treatment they need.

Providing comfort on wheels IN 2017 we launched our very first in-hospital Hospitality à la Carte program, extending our reach to thousands of more families and children. Delivering Hospitality à la Carte at Randall Children’s Hospital, dedicated volunteers rolled through the hallways all year long, providing tasty treats, books, games, hot cups of coffee and resources to the bedsides of hospitalized children, when they are far from home facing medical treatment, surgery and long intensive hospital stays. In its very first year our Hospitality Cart program provided love and support to over 4,300 children and families, three days each week. It inspired a community of cherished volunteers, and brought friendly smiles and warm hearts to children’s hospital rooms more than 10,000 times. In 2018 we will be taking our Hospitality Cart to Salem Health and Oregon Health & Science University.

The heartbeat of our organization VOLUNTEERS FILL our Houses with warmth, our kitchens with the smell of fresh-baked cookies, and our halls with music. They stock our cabinets, beautify our guest rooms, plant our gardens and so much more. In 2017, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington hosted 1,988 volunteers, who provided 19,014 hours of services, valued at $464,131.

IN ADDITION to those volunteers who work in our Houses every day, many volunteers support our mission in other ways. They include our board members, committee members, professional service volunteers, and event volunteers. We couldn’t provide a “home away from home” for thousands of families every year without the hard work and compassion of each and every volunteer.

IN 2017, our 2nd Annual Stronger Together 5K Walk, Run and Roll welcomed more than 1,300 supporters in four cities across the state – all adorned in signature red and white striped socks. Keeping our house in order OUR HOUSES are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family needs to focus on the health of their child—not where they will get their next meal, nor where they will lay their head at night to rest. Families are invited to stay at our Houses for free, removing a major barrier for those who struggle to find alternative housing. In Portland in 2017, the average hotel cost more than $176 per night. At our Houses, it’s always $0.

Part of a global community RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE Charities is the world’s leading NGO directly impacting the health and well-being of families and children across the globe. Today, nearly 90 percent of the world’s top children’s hospitals, in more than 60 countries, have access to at least one RMHC family-centered program. OUR DONORS

Every donor makes a difference IN 1982 a corps of inspired people banded together to address the needs of families who have to travel far from home to find medical care for their seriously ill children. They gave generously of their time and money, and just two short years later, in 1984, the first Oregon Ronald McDonald House opened. Ever since that day, donors like these have provided both a driving force and a solid foundation for our mission.

As the number of Houses in Oregon has moved from one to three (and soon four!), they have enabled us to continue providing compassionate hospitality to thousands of children and families.

EVERY DONOR makes a difference for the families who stay at our Houses. Whether they were dropping their spare change in the donation box at their local McDonald’s, walking in our Stronger Together 5K, knitting blankets for newborn babies, or making home-cooked meals, donors made more contributions than ever before in 2017.

CIRCLE OF GIVING WITH THE ENCOURAGEMENT and support of our founding board member and dedicated volunteer, Susan Schnitzer, we introduced the Circle of Giving in 2015 to recognize and honor individuals, foundations, and companies whose donations exceeded $10,000 annually. Last year, 54 inspiring individuals, families, foundations, and corporations contributed at this level and selected a special project to fund. In 2017 they selected the Grab and Go program, which provides families with the healthy, nutritious food they need to sustain them during a long day at the hospital.

#GOING WHILE WE TREASURE the time we get to spend with the families who stay at our Ronald McDonald Houses, we are never happier than when it is time for one of them to go home.

Leaving means getting to say goodbye to the stress and anxious nights of the hospital, and a return to the familiarity and comforts of home. At all three Oregon Ronald McDonald Houses, we love to celebrate this moment with a #goinghome photo shoot and a joyful send off. Whether we are saying goodbye after 2 nights, 20 nights or 200 nights, we are always excited to get out the chalkboard!
