I N S T R U C T I O N S a n d PA R T S L I S T Type 653 PURPOSE The Type 653 governor is for controlling and maintaining a constant discharge pressure on high pressure steam driven pumps, especially those handling oils or similar fluids at high temperatures so that a metal diaphragm is desirable.

FISHER TYPE 260 FRE-FLO STRAINER

FISHER TYPE 653 PUMP GOVERNOR

NEEDLE VALVE

INSTALLATION All pipe lines should be cleaned to remove pipe scale and rust. It is recommended that a strainer such as a Fisher Type 260 be installed in the line ahead of the valve so that particles of dirt will be prevented from getting into the valve body. Traps in the steam line should also be provided to remove condensate from the line. If it is desirable to have continuous operation, install a three-valve by-pass around the valve, so that the valve can be shut down without cutting off flow. The governor should be placed in the steam line as shown in the drawing with the diaphragm above the line, if possible. When installing the valve in the line, observe the following: (1) Make sure the flow through the body is in the direction indicated by the arrow cast on the body. (2) If the body has screwed end connections, use a good grade of pipe compound on the male threads. (3) If the body is flanged construction, draw the flange bolts up evenly.

PUMP SUCTION

TO PUT IN OPERATION Close the hand valve in the by-pass line and open the hand valve between the valve and the steam chest. Slowly open the hand operated throttle valve and allow a few minutes to start the pump and bring the discharge up to operating pressure.

ADJUSTMENT If the discharge pressure is too low turn the adjusting screw up an into the spring case. To reduce the discharge pressure, turn the adjusting screw down and out of the spring case.

CONTROL LINE Connect one end of the 3/4 control line to the top diaphragm casing, and the other end to the side or top of the pump discharge line about 10 feet from the pump. Install a needle valve in this line for use in throttling the control pressure to obtain smooth
