The publication will be distributed twice annually, in the spring and fall, and will highlight the wonderful programs and accomplishments of SUSD students and staff. At SUSD we firmly believe that “one size” does not fit all. As a result, we tailor our educational programs to meet the needs of all of our students. Our goal is to offer a world-class education to all students ensuring that they are “future ready.” We recognize that our students have multiple post-secondary paths and we strive to offer programs to prepare students to succeed in the 21st century workforce. This magazine will help you visualize the programming occurring within the walls of your schools. I believe this content will lead to conversations between families and neighbors as well as between the District and the community. This issue of our magazine focuses on how we prepare students to be future ready. We will share why we believe it is important that our students are exposed to technology, technical education, rigorous coursework and dual enrollment. These are the opportunities preparing our students for their futures. Today’s students will be tomorrow’s leaders in our community and economy. To prepare today’s students for the new global economy, SUSD offers Career and Technology Education (CTE) at all five high schools. Career and Technical Education prepares students for the future Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs prepare students with the academic and vocational skills needed to be successful in a competitive workforce. “The award winning Graphic Design/ Advertising Art classes at Arcadia High School are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in design,” said instructor Dianna Cure. “They encourage the intellectual, technical and professional skills necessary to sustain life-long learning with an unwavering commitment to excellence.” CTE programs instill vital career skills including ethics, collaboration, responsibility, leadership and communication. SUSD provides students with access to the latest design software with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CS6 and CC available in the cloud. Design students can receive a Fine Arts credit and three college credits. Arcadia advertising art students have designed marketing material for SUSD, SRP, a Valley Metro Bus and Light Rail as well as the state of Arizona. Student designs contributed to the Arizona Health Department West Nile Virus advertising campaign and for the Crisis Nursery. All students develop a portfolio necessary for entrance into post-secondary institutions and employment. “Arcadia graphic design students apply for internships and parttime employment opportunities often only available to college students,” Cure said. “More often than not those Arcadia students are hired over the college student.” 6

Developing 21st century learning skills through robotics
S
cottsdale robotics teams have a strong tradition of success. This year, Hohokam Traditional School and Saguaro High School both have teams qualifying for the 2016 VEX Worlds, April 20-23. Chaparral High School and Saguaro also have teams qualifying for the 2016 FRC World Championship. Robotics programs offer SUSD students future ready opportunities emphasizing leadership, collaboration and problem-solving. Programs include First Lego League (FLL), First Robotics Challenge (FRC), VEX IQ and VEX. This year, after winning the Arizona VEX Robotics State Championship High School Division, Saguaro’s VEX robotics team, 4146V, qualified for the 2016 VEX Worlds Competition. This is not the first time that students on the Saguaro team have competed at this level. During 2014 and 2015, students on the team qualified for the VEX Worlds while attending Mohave MidW W W. dle School. Additionally, the Saguaro VEX team won all three tournaments they entered this year along with a design award and two excellence awards. “The robotics program allows students with all knowledge and skill levels to explore the different aspects of building, coding and driving a robot,” stated Susan Lindberg, Saguaro VEX robotics coach. “It is amazing watching our students develop confidence and learn skills that they can use the rest of their lives.” Robotics is an inclusive program that provides opportunities for students to support one another across grade levels. Blaise Williams, who participated on two world teams and now attends Saguaro High School, mentors Mohave students. “The world competition is a humbling experience,” Williams said. “While we all enjoy winning competitions, at SUSD our emphasis is on learning and developing skills that

Danielle Mara of the Saguaro Robotics team understands dedication. Besides participating on the Saguaro team, Danielle has honed leadership skills by mentoring younger students and coordinating a First Lego League regional competition held in December 2015. Most recently Danielle was recognized at the state First Lego League Championship as Volunteer of the Year. “Robotics has been the most meaningful experience of my life. Not only have I had the opportunity to learn all the essential skills that I will need in my future career, but this program has empowered me to be the confident young woman I am today,” Mara said.

Scottsdale Unified School District has signed the Future Ready District Pledge, part of President Barack Obama’s ConnectED Initiative, “committing to foster and lead a culture of digital learning.” “Future Ready, from a school district perspective, means that we pledged to provide the infrastructure, devices, professional development, content, and staff to transition to digital learning for a more personalized student learning experience,” said Dr. Kyle Ross, director of instructional technology and assessment. “For students, being Future Ready means that they have the skills and resources to be active participants in their own learning, not passive recipients of information. For teachers, being Future Ready means a commitment to learn new strategies and tools to design experiences for students that actively engage them in their own learning.” As a result, the educational classroom setting in SUSD is evolving, as is the

International Baccalaureate fosters collaborative learning The International Baccalaureate (IB) program housed at Desert Mountain High School is a rigorous academic program widely recognized by selective colleges and universities. Not only in their future English classes but also for college and their future endeavors,” said Victoria Adam, English Honors teacher at Desert Mountain High School. “Technology is a huge part of their lives and utilizing the Google Chromebooks allows students to communicate with each other for peer edits, group projects, or simply just to clarify information related to an assignment.”
The Future Ready framework is a system of gears, all working together with personalized student learning at the center; no aspect of the school district is exempt from the Future Ready framework. “Personalized digital learning requires a solid network and infrastructure, which requires a funding structure to support it,” Ross said. “Meaningful professional development will further transform teaching and learning to ensure our teachers are Future Ready.” “My students use technology to interact with their surroundings, better understand the world and their place within it,” Cuppy said. “Technology opens doors for our youth, and I intend to embrace rapidly changing technology, so I can enhance learning opportunities for my students.”

The early college and career program at Coronado High School teaches research and problem-solving, academic skills, study skills and self-advocacy skills. Beginning with the class of 2015, freshman students can participate in academic intervention and mentoring leading to an opportunity to earn up to 12 dual enrollment credits before graduation. A majority of the students who participate in the program will become first generation college students. Dual enrollment opportunities exist at all five SUSD high schools. Previously, two SUSD students earned their Associates Degree while attending high school. In the fall of 2015, there were over 1,450 dual enrollments with Scottsdale Community College by SUSD students. That is up nearly 25% from the previous year.

he Saguaro High School Math and Science Academy provides students unmatched opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The rigorous program is modeled after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology acceptance requirements. Academy students graduate fully-qualified to pursue post-secondary STEM-oriented fields. The program began in 2008 and now serves over 150 students annually. “While students may apply at any time during their four years at Saguaro, they are encouraged to apply during their transition from eighth grade,” said Chris Brandt, academy coordinator. Students in ninth and 10th grades participate in cohorts grouped in math, science and English. Cohort classes offer opportunities for enhanced instruction and optimize critical thinking. To earn the academy distinction, students must complete courses in advanced mathematics, English, science and world language. Beginning junior year, students develop a program of study tailored to their interest in a STEM field. Students participate in academic competitions related to science, math and engineering at the state and/or national level. As a program capstone, students complete a field experience or mentorship project with a practicing scientist, mathematician or like professional. “The research or mentorship project really sets our students apart from the competition,” Brandt said. Beyond rigor, participation in the program teaches students problem-solving, creativity and collaboration – skills necessary for the 21st century!

Mastering strategic languages can make students more eligible for college scholarships and career opportunities. This innovative focus provides an intuitive exploration of our world. The philosophy of the Navajo STEAM Design Academy is to develop thinking into applications of relevance. Students embrace independent thinking through inquiry and real-world problem-based learning reaching beyond the textbook, empowering children to actualize the value of their education and future applications. Navajo creates an environment in which children monitor their own behavior, practice the traits of great scholars and experience that failure is a critical element of ultimate success. It is a tech savvy environment of exploration, innovation and vision. Navajo students use science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and language arts to solve real world problems. Students use research skills, creative ideation, and logical thinking in order to collaboratively answer questions that designers, engineers, historians and many other disciplinarians face. Through teamwork and asking the question of ‘why,’ students rise well beyond mandated standards and become future ready scholars. Fifth grade STEAM Academy students are actively involved in rigorous tasks, creating the tools and materials experts would use. tudents must feel emotionally and physically safe in order to learn. Emotional safety is provided by caring teachers and
supportive counselors on campuses with positive climates and cultures.

havior Intervention and Support Programs (PBIS) that teach positive behaviors both inside and outside the classroom.

Our schools practice evacuation and lockdown drills in regular intervals ensuring that our staff and students are familiar with protocols in the event of an emergency. One of the strongest elements to our security plan is the positive relationships that our students have with security officers and School Resource Officers (SROs), stationed at our middle and high schools. These uniformed officers patrol our campuses to deter criminal activity and act as a liaison with the Scottsdale Police Department. Our elementary campuses share SROs with nearby middle and high

schools. The SROs on these campuses deter unwanted behaviors. Security staff at the middle and high school level are present in the halls and build a rapport with students fostering open communication. Students feel comfortable sharing concerns which deters issues that could otherwise hinder the learning process. In addition to security personnel, SUSD campuses utilize security cameras and perimeter fencing. Conozcan a Richard Maxwell Rock stars, composers and producers are just some of the aspiring talent that comes from Arcadia High School’s Creative Musical Arts and Sciences program (CMAS). The nationally recognized program created by two-time GRAMMY nominee Richard Maxwell, allows students the opportunity to explore their own creative process.
Estrellas de la música rock, compositores y productores solamente son algunos ejemplos de los talentos aspirantes que se originan del programa CMAS (Artes Creativas, Musicales y Científicas) de la Escuela Secundaria Arcadia. El programa, nacionalmente reconocido, fue creado por Richard Maxwell, el dosveces nominado para recibir un premio Grammy, y les ofrece a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar su propio proceso creativo. “Es un gran honor, por no decir más”, dice Maxwell de su segunda nominación. “De muchas maneras, realmente hizo muchísimo para legitimar el programa CMAS, lo que para mí es importante porque el programa CMAS es tan singular”.

The Voices of Saguaro program has been under the direction of Tutnick for the past 21 years and has performed at Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and in a mass choir at Carnegie Hall. The group will be performing solo at Carnegie Hall this spring. Tutnick also directs Saguaro’s Advanced Vocal Ensemble, consisting of the top 24 singers from the Voices of Saguaro. The group has appeared in concert with Josh Groban, Bobby McFerrin, Foreigner and Jonathan Cain of Journey.
