t’s almost time to say farewell to 2015, and as we close out the year I want to make a few predictions. Come January, our resolutions will include a healthier diet, more exercise and “taking care” of ourselves.

Sound familiar?

In this issue of LiveWell, you’ll find nutrition and exercise advice to help you stay on a healthy path while enjoying the revelry of the season. Then, you will be better prepared for a healthy 2016.

Also, you will meet two star volunteers— Glenn and Marjorie Weavers, who have devoted more than 11,000 combined volunteer hours to Sun Health. The highschool sweethearts from Wisconsin have worked the information desk at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, served on boards, helped with events and even made phone calls on behalf of the Foundation. They are an inspiring duo.

And finally, I invite you to learn how our Senior Living residents are benefiting from You’ll also meet two technology. Our electronic medical records system and other high-tech tools help us provide star volunteers— high-quality care, all while ensuring resident safety and security. Leading the Way Sun Health Senior Living combines the latest technology with exceptional service

echnology is bringing sweeping changes to the senior living industry and Sun Health Senior Living staff members are part of the sweep. Linda Lessard, systems project manager for Sun Health Senior Living– has helped lead the digital charge.

Two years ago, she oversaw Sun Health Senior Living’s transition from a paper-based record-keeping system to a paperless, more secure and fully digital electronic medical record. One of the biggest advantages of an electronic medical records platform is the ability to offer superior service in all aspects of senior living; from health and wellness programs inside our independent living locations to our Health and Rehabilitation Centers.

“Their records are in one secure electronic location that’s accessible to authorized members of the care team,” Lessard says. “And, the data follows the residents throughout all levels of their care, which allows for a truly collaborative effort.”

Another technological advance is the HealthMEDx iCare app that enables physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioners to review residents’ charts remotely from a tablet, laptop or smartphone. In the past, a provider would have to come to the health and rehabilation center to access a resident’s medical chart.

With iCare, physicians like Sun Health Senior Living program director Arun Lakshmipathy, M.D., can log in from any location using an iPad or iPhone. Once connected, he can view real-time data, communicate with other care team members and sign orders.

“With iCare, you have a list of the patient’s medications, their vital signs and your notes all in the same place,” Lakshmipathy says. “It gives us more time to initiate the care treatment plan and saves us from having to look for charts.”

Registered Nurse Thomas Quigg, director of nursing at Grandview Terrace Health and Rehabilitation, agreed with that assessment.

for any authorized provider if needed,” Quigg says.

“Patients can get their medications faster through the online system at the pharmacy, and we can also perform in-house X-rays with the mobile companies.”

In addition, Grandview Terrace Health and Rehabilitation is piloting a telehealth program created

by Banner Health. The Banner Telehealth program uses electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance health care, especially after hours. Lakshmipathy and his staff are on-site to address residents’ needs during the day. But from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., a Banner Health physician is available through telehealth to respond to residents’ health needs.

“Using a laptop video camera, the telehealth physicians can assess a patient’s condition, just as if they were in the room, and determine the appropriate treatment,” Lessard says. “Along with reducing hospital readmissions, telehealth gives Sun Health a high level of physician care around the clock.”

“All of these tools are helping our medical director and clinical team to deliver the best care possible,” Lessard says.

aking a virtual tour of a famous museum, watching a television show from the ’60s, or Skyping with relatives across the country.

It’s not what you’d expect to find at a health and rehabilitation center for seniors. But, a specially-designed computer called “It’s Never 2 Late” is helping older adults at La Loma Village Health and Rehabilitation and Grandview Terrace Health and Rehabilitation tap into the wonders of digital media.

Residents are emailing, Skyping, playing music and games, and watching movies and TV like they’re seasoned millennials.

This is thanks to It’s Never 2 Late, an interactive touchscreen computer system created for adults in senior-living settings. Set atop a mobile unit, the computer also features a trackball-style mouse and a large-print keyboard for easier use.

“The ‘It’s Never 2 Late’ system has something for everybody,” says Kari Curry, Life Enrichment director and Assisted Living manager for La Loma Village.

“When it’s not in use for a group activity, residents can request the computer be brought to their rooms, or sometimes we’ll leave it in the community area where lots of residents use it to play games.”

Earlier this year, LeadingAge Arizona presented La Loma Village Health and Rehabilitation with an Innovation in Technology award for its use of the system.

And while it’s often used simply for fun and recreation, It’s Never 2 Late has an educational component as well: Residents can take an armchair tour of the Louvre, for example, or learn about the history of printing money.

“This is a fabulous system, and it provides an assortment of great, mind-stimulating activities,” says Linda Lessard, systems project manager for Sun Health Senior Living. “That’s really wonderful for all our residents and, in particular, those with memory issues whose most ‘recent’ memories could have been 30 years ago.

It’s Never 2 Late can bring them a sense of contentment and peace.”

Glenn and Marjorie Weavers’ commitment to Sun Health Foundation remains strong after two decades of giving back MAR K LIP

olunteering at the local hospital wasn’t exactly Glenn Weavers’ vision of retirement. But his plan was no match for what his wife, Marjorie, had in mind.

“I said, ‘Oh no. I’m not going to do that,’” Glenn recalls with a laugh today. “She said, ‘What are you going to do?’ and I said, “I’m going to play golf!’”

After some gentle prodding, Glenn relented and the couple launched what has become an aweinspiring commitment to volunteering for Sun Health Foundation over the course of two decades.

In that time, Glenn has logged more than 9,500 volunteer hours; Marjorie is nearing 2,000.

“One of the reasons we moved to Arizona was for the healthy lifestyle,” Marjorie says. “Sun Health Foundation helps make this happen in our community in so many ways. We wanted to be part of that, and our talents seemed to match the community’s needs.”

For the Sun City West couple, their volunteer work has become an important, if unpredicted, chapter in their rich life together. High school 6 LiveWell

sweethearts, they both graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1953 and married that same year.

Marjorie worked in the speech and hearing field while Glenn served in the Korean War, worked in the dairy and food industry and later started a successful business in the oil industry. The couple raised a daughter who continues the family tradition of dedicated volunteering. After moving around the country for Glenn’s work, the couple settled in Sun City West in 1994.

Raised by Depression-era parents, both Glenn and Marjorie learned the importance of working hard and helping others. And that’s exactly what they have done for Sun Health Foundation.

Virtually no part of Sun Health’s operations–past and present–have been untouched by them. They serve throughout the Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, from working the information desk to giving Saturday “Pickles and Ice Cream” tours for expectant parents. Marjorie also was active with the hospital’s former auxiliary board.

What is a Charitable gift model Gift Annuity? Philanthropic offers a variety of benefits

et me share with you a powerful and effective charitable giving gift model called the Charitable Gift Annuity, or CGA. Although a CGA is a tax-wise and donor-friendly way to leave a charitable gift, it is often misunderstood and underutilized.

What is a CGA? It is a contract between a donor and a qualified charity allowing an individual to transfer cash or appreciated property to the charity in return for the charity’s promise to pay an annuity to the individual, the annuitant, or a designated annuitant, typically for life.

Charitable Gift Annunities offer many benefits, including: • Receiving fixed payments to you, or another designee, for life • Receiving a charitable income tax deduction for the charitable gift portion of the annuity, including the possibility of avoiding capital gains tax • Receiving annuity payments that are partially tax free • Facilitating your philanthropic impact by designating the remainder of the funds to your personal charitable interest

the holiday season is right around the corner— and for many folks, it’s truly the best time of the year, complete with family reunions, and friend-filled parties and get-togethers. Alas, many of us are either watching our weight, our blood sugars, cholesterol or more, so how can a reveler have fun but stay on the healthy side of food and drink?

We asked Margaret Brown, a registered dietitian at the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing, for her advice.

Q: Why is good nutrition so important during the holiday season?

A: At this time of year, treating your body wisely is especially important— particularly if you live with a chronic disease such as diabetes, COPD or heart disease. That’s because even a few hours of overindulgence can trigger unhealthy blood pressure, fluid retention or increased blood sugars.

Q: How can I (and why should I) plan for exercising when it’s so easy to be overloaded with “must-do” activities?

A: Exercise is very important to fit into your schedule because regular exercise keeps your stress hormones in check, plus increased activity will help combat holiday depression.

he holiday season just wouldn’t be quite as delightful without some special, baked goodies using recipes that have often been handed-down from mom, grandma and even greatgrandma. But with just a few tasty tweaks, these yummy treats can become healthier. Here’s how:

INSTEAD OF BUTTER: Use equal parts cinnamon-flavored no-sugar-added applesauce.

• TAKE SMALLER BITES & eat at a slower pace.

It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to signal that you’re full.

INSTEAD OF SUGAR: Use a lower-calorie sugar substitute or half the sugar

• CHOOSE ONE DESSERT you really want, and truly enjoy it.

• USE A SMALLER PLATE and fill half of your plate with veggies.

INSTEAD OF CREAM: Use low-fat or skim milk.

• AVOID: sour cream, cream, dips, butter, mayonnaise and gravy.

Q: What are some tips for avoiding healthy-eating roadblocks?

A: Don’t get complacent—make a pre-party plan so you can enjoy some of those decadent holiday treats without overindulging.

In addition, if you’re a guest, offer to bring a colorful veggie platter or fruit plate with a lowcalorie dip. If you’re the host, make the theme “healthy foods” and share your tips and recipes.

And remember: Alcohol can lead to overindulgence, so pace yourself—and don’t forget to sip on water throughout the event to stay hydrated.

1 cup dried navy beans, covered with water 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large or 2 small onions, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons sugar or see box on page 8 for sugar substitutes 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Q: How can I politely decline someone’s ‘only-make-em-oncea-year’ holiday goodies?

A: Take the pressure off by talking to the host in advance. Your good friends will understand and be glad you’re there to share in the social and happy times that come with the holidays.

1 tablespoon fresh chopped basil 1 15-oz. can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped ¼ cup rehydrated and chopped sun-dried tomatoes Salt and pepper to taste

Rinse and sort beans, place in pot and cover with 1 inch of water. Bring to a boil, and then lower heat to a slow simmer. Cook beans until tender, between 45 mins-1 hour, adding water if necessary to keep beans covered. When done, drain beans and reserve cooking liquid.

hile the beans are cooking, heat oil in skillet and add onion, garlic, and W sugar. Saute until translucent and just starting to take on color, 5-8 minutes.

Add cooked beans, onion mixture, and all remaining ingredients into a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Use the reserved bean cooking liquid along with some extra virgin olive oil to adjust the thickness of the dip while blending.

Can be served warm, room temperature, or chilled. Goes great with pita chips, fresh vegetables, or tortilla chips.

Prep time: 15 mins./ Cook time: 45 mins. – 1 hour/ Serves: 10-15

Yoga for Relaxation and Posture Wednesdays, Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30; 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Yoga involves paying attention to your breath, which can help you relax and feel less stressed. As flexibility increases from the yoga poses, your posture improves and you’re more likely to sit and stand “tall.” This class will use chairs for warm-ups and cool-downs, and will practice standing yoga poses. Participants must be able to stand independently. Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing. Instructor is Dianne Chamberlain.

Led by instructor DeAnn Straw, this class emphasizes breathing through yoga poses and building core strength with Pilates. It combines flexibility, balance, and strength exercises, for the mind and body, that are designed to help improve sleep, decrease anxiety and help you feel restored.

Yoga poses can help you move better and feel less stiff or tired by improving flexibility, and building upper body, core and lower body strength while also helping to relieve anxiety and reduce stress. This class will use poses standing and on the floor. Participants must be able to stand independently and to safely get up and down from the floor unassisted. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel, water bottle, and wear comfortable clothing. Instructor is Donna Schnoor.

Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing Community Room 14719 W. Grand Ave., Surprise SAFETY AARP Smart Driver™ Course Tuesday, Dec. 1; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

AARP Smart Driver™ is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50plus. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and to remain safe on today’s roads. Participants may be eligible to receive a multi-year discount on their auto insurance premiums. The course is taught by AARP volunteer instructor Robin Mandell.

Participant cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Participants must bring a driver’s license and a check payable to AARP to the session. Cash will not be accepted. Due to limited class size and supplies, walk-ins will not be admitted.
